Today, an announcement was sent out to all students and parents on FreshGrade in regards to yesterday's PAR. Last I checked, there were 10 students who had not completed it. Also, the feedback and edits/revisions is also a required component of the daily PAR. If you were one of the students who did not complete the 3 parts, you must go back and complete this before doing today's PAR.

Mr. Collins taught a very engaging lesson on Natural Selection today. Your PAR will be related to his lesson.

Go back to yesterday's PAR, and complete it before doing today's post a response assignment.
In paragraph form, complete the following:

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) What was the impact the number of dots of one colour had on the number of dots in the next
generation.
2.) Why do you think more predators chose to 'hunt' the brown dots, as opposed to true greens
and whites?
3.) After completing this activity, what does the theory of natural selection mean to you?

Interesting subject again!

First of all, I think the brown dots were just more liked by people than the other dots. The brown dots has maybe a better outcome of the other dots. (I’m not saying they don’t have a good impact, I’m just saying an idea) Maybe people thought brown was better than the other colours because they might of looked better, or people just had a fast reaction for brown. Not everyone I know got mostly brown. In our group, a lot of people went for white, the most camouflaged colour.

Green and white might have not been as popular because they might of blended in more, more people don’t like green and white as much as brown, or it could just be a fast reaction they had. If for say, there were three animals like a pig, a dog, and a bear, I think most people would pick the dog. Most people like dogs more than those other animals (not to be rude). It just a preference that they have. This goes for the same thing we did today in class.

What the theory of natural selection means to me is that it’s a process behind evolution. I know that from watching that video, and understand the real meaning behind it. I’ve already explain this enough (if you really wanted to watch me explain the meaning of what it means to me and what it actually means go look at yesterday’s post for more information). This topic is very important and I hope to learn more about it.

In conclusion I can understand what the theory of natural selection means and could try and explain it to someone. This video really helped me really understand it!

I'm curious, why did your group focus on the camouflaged colour? I would have thought you would have gone for the easier to spot colours as it would be less work!

@ Mr. Collins. I’m not really sure why people started going for mostly the white. Maybe they wanted a challenge (Lol).

I was a predator the whole time and I didn’t really have a preference to what colour I chose. So I’m not sure.

Umm..........it is interesting!

First, I think that every one like brown dots and everyone hate green dots! back to the topic, I think that the first reason of it is because brown dots is outcome from the other colour and the poster that we use, so people might just have fast reaction to pick up the most outcome dots. The people don't pick up the white dots because the poster is white too, so, they might didn't even see their's a white dot over there.

Because we can't see many white dots, so nobody pick up the white dots, it is not ok, because now we have to double the dots, and the problem is that we can only pick up white because we ran out of green and brown, and the white growing more and more.(Which led to more of them). And we add white dots over and over again, and we didn't have any brown or green dots now. So, we just add white until we ran out of white dots.

After we play this game, my theory of natural selection hadn't change much! Anyway, Something that I learned today is that some species have a lot living in this world, but some species just have a little groups of them, I think that they can able to live in this world, as long as they have food to eat and eaten by other animals.( But some of them might become extinct)

In conclusion, I think that it is a great project, I love it. It also presented what is the theory of natural selection, it helped me understand the meaning of the theory of natural selection well.

Oh my...... dots are all on the ground! Messy things always happen on group activities, they are really fun. However, the centre and the main idea of group activities are letting you understand of your learning.

I think chose to hunt is to not get hungry and not die form starvation and to bring food to there family. They can also use animal skin to use it as clothing. They also sometimes bring lots of food so they can use that food to eat over winter. Bears usually are the ones that hunts a lot in my opinion because they are going to need to hunt a lot specialty if they have little baby bears. They mostly hunt at the night because so they can sneak up on an animal and hunt them

This gave us a better understanding of natural selection and demonstrated what it would be like in the real world for those who might be confused.

The number of dots of one colour may be threatening to the other or itself. If there is more dots of one colour than the other after selection, then that means that there will be even a bigger gap between the numbers. Continuing this process for more and more generations, you will then completely wipeout one of the colour of dots.

Because the model today wasn’t exactly so similar to real life, the white dots didn’t quite work out to be a camouflaging effect. This resulted in some random results. At the end, brown had the least left over because of how much it stands out to predators. On the other hand, green and white ones don’t stand out as much, resulting in a higher chance of survival and domination over other colors.

After this demonstration, my thinking of this theory hasn’t changed much. But what I did learn today was the fact that it will take quite a lot of generations before one species/colour takes over the other. Though, some colors/species were able to camouflage a little, it doesn’t mean that they’ll totally avoid their prey. It will still take a long period of time in order for nature/game to widen the gap between the numbers and finally killing the species/colour.

In conclusion, it was great to have a representation for the process of natural selection. Though I didn’t learn much, I am sure that this helped many students clarify the meaning of this theory. Like I’ve said before, I think that it is especially important for us to learn this, so we can determine the real explanation in the future.

White, brown, and green. It’s that simple, just pick one up and put it in your hand. Green, *scan around* oh look brown!

The brown and green dots were pretty easy to spot, but the white? Nope. For me, a person who doesn’t have the best eyesight, the white was pretty hard to find. It’s not like I couldn’t see the white ones, I just had a harder time finding it. So basically the big idea is that on the white paper, the white dots were blended into the background. The greens and browns stood out like a sore thumb if you ask me.

Now because I couldn’t see many of the white dots there were a lot of them. Then we had to double it. Which led to more of them. This affected the next generation of white dots because the young white dots had a lot of older white dots to guide them to success. The young white dots also got influenced by the older white dots. Then this young dots grew older and had young dots and then those young dots have young dots and it keeps on going on and on and on until you run out of dots...

To be extremely honest, natural selection doesn’t mean much to me. I only care about this and study it because I get marked on this.... EXPOSED. Anyways, natural selection is important because it shapes us and make us who we are today. Maybe a long time ago the cavemen “disposed” of the weaker ones and they kept on doing that until we were made. Conspiracy theory! I think that natural selection is important because if we didn’t have it there would be over population. Then it would be WAY to chaotic and it would be terrible, just terrible, imagine everywhere you look, there are critters EVERYWHERE! Natural selection also effects the food we eat. Farmers grow the crops, select the biggest and juiciest ones, plant seeds of the improved crop, and continue the process until all the crops are so big that they can be labeled as, “over priced” for me. Take dogs for example, all the puppies in the dog store are cute, furry, and somewhat well behave. Actually, not very well behaved. Moving on, those cute and fluffy dogs are bred from parents that probably look like it’s offspring. What about the non-cute, non-furry, and extremely problem matic puppies? I won’t answer that one... The world around us uses natural selection to make money. That’s the hard truth. Now that I think about it, this IS important to me. All the plant that I buy will be over priced!

The dots we couldn’t pick in time were doubled by how many were left, adding to the next generation of the colour. The colour that was picked up the least was the white one which meant it got doubled more every time by the amount we couldn’t pick up. So basically, the dots that weren’t picked up were doubled and added to the next generation of the colour.

I think more predators chose to hunt the brown dots opposed to the green and white dots because they were more visible and faster to take then trying to go after the white ones which were harder to see (for me) and more camouflaged.

In conclusion the number of dots left were representing the ones which were chosen to live and reproduce and the ones that were taken represented the ones that won’t.

Now we started with sixty dots and by the next round, the predators ate around fourteen. Most of were green and white. As fourteen organisms were taken away from their habitat. Only forty-six organisms left. As organisms reproduce the ecosystem should be growing. The dots were slowly growing in population since the organisms were reproducing and doubling after every round. So each generation would be larger than the one before.

Now after this activity, my understanding became a bit clearer, as a foggy day turned into a partly sunny day. From my new understanding, natural selection to me is the description of how nature balances out its society. As newborns come in, ones must replace it in the earth. I can relate this to a Netflix show, the chilling adventures of Sabrina. so in one episode a girl was harrowed to bring back a dead friend. but she was later brought back to life. her friends who harrowed her thought everything was fine but she was slowly dying since its "a life for a life" and they broke the balance by bringing back both the dead friend and the girl who was harrowed. (this show is about witchcraft and its hard to understand). So a summarization of natural selection to me is the balance of the natural society. :)

"Five! Four! Three! Two! One! Stop!" Zero dots again!

Today we played a game to help us better understand the theory of natural selection. We were supposed to try and 'eat' all the brown, green and white dots in 20 seconds. Then we were supposed to double the number of dots left and do repeat it. It was very educational and entertaining.

I think more predators chose to hunt the brown dots because they were the most vulnerable and exposed as opposed to the white ones which were the most camoflauged. I'm not sure about the green ones; they are also quite visible.

What was very funny was that in the first round, my group had around 30 dots after the reproducing, and then after the roles were switched, we had none left over in the second round. Same for the third. We had to add fifteen of each color instead.

What I don't understand is why we had to add fifteen of each. If an entire species is wiped out, how can the species magically exist again?

To me, the theory of natural selection is nature's way of selecting which certain organisms in a certain family get to survive and reproduce and which ones perish. For example, a dull coloured insect would survive longer compared to a brightly coloured one.

Overall, from this activity, I learned a lot about natural selection, and I understand natural selection a lot clearer now.

We were split into groups, and each group was supposed to try and 'eat' all the brown, green and white dots in 20 seconds. Then we were required to double the number of dots left and repeat the process. It was very entertaining and at the same time educational.

The dots activity we did today was actually pretty fun?! It also helps me understand the rule of natural selection better. Okay, let me first explain the rules of the game. In the first round, there are 60 dots in total. There are dots with white, brown and green colors. Each of the colors got 20 dots. What we’re trying to do is to pick up dots as much as you can in 20 seconds. The dots we couldn’t pick up were doubled in the second round. What I noticed is that brown and green dots seems to be more popular than the white ones. White ones seem to blend in with the background paper, it’s kinda hard to see in a limited of time and I think that’s why more predators choose to hunt the brown and green dots. In the second round, people will have to double the ones they left from the paper. Until there’s more white left instead of the green and brown ones. That’s what part of natural selection is about.

In conclusion, I think natural selection is important because it’s a process of evolution for the organism to adapted to their environment and became who they are today. It’s kinda like nature selects the ones that are the best and let it become the new, main species. Some individuals are more successful at surviving and reproducing than others.

That way, white would be exterminated by nature since it was not fit for that environment and the predators that liked hunting the white ones, and the more populated colours were fit to survive in THAT environment because they were easier to catch, which for some reason these predators didn't like.

P.S. Btw if you didn't know which environment and predators I was talking about, it was this classroom and us.

WHAT THE........White is going to survive! But then it dies.
I think if we did it again it would be completely different. This is why I think that. I can see different shades very good so they all looked the same to me. So all I did was pick up the ones closest to me. So it depends on How the game keeper sets it up. Next time if the game keeper sets it differently then the score will be different.

Today we played a game for a better understanding of, “natural selection”. There had to be two predators, 1 gamekeeper, and one scorekeeper. We got lots of paper dots to spend out on a sheet of white paper. After everyone finished spreading it out, Mr. Collins will give us 20 seconds for the predators to collect as many dots as they can, then we did a count of all the dots that were collected and surprising results were turned in. The brown dots were discovered to be collected the most.

The brown dots were collected the most was it had the most vibrant color. There were 3 colors to pick from green, red, and white, since you can’t see white on a white piece of paper, it was picked the least. The green dots pop out but not as much as the brown ones do. The predators would go for the ones they see first, which in this case is brown dots.

After we finished the game, my thought on it remain the same. The more dots there are in a color the longer they can survive for. It doesn’t mean they will survive forever if they have more dots, they will only survive longer. If the most hunted color runs out, the predators will go for other colors like green.

All in all, it was great to have natural selection presented to us. I had learned a lot from this useful and fun class.

The power of Natural selection is very strong and a very interesting and fun topic that we can all A’s students enjoy!

Now today we had Me.Collins teach us the meaning and power of Natural Selection and this lesson to me was very interesting because I was puzzled around how a certain type of animal would not survive longer than another type of animal like a monkey and frog, the frog is able to eat bugs, fruits and plants! On the other hand the monkey is able to devoure entire fruits, leafs of plants, other small bugs!

And today the lesson had 3 different coloured dots green, brown and white! And these coloured dots were spread across a big sheet of work paper, and the science in this is that certain colours were chosen by certain predators (students 2) and the dots that had more eaten were the ones in the Natural Selection that were at the bottom because they were the ones that lived a shorter life and others lived long than that animal because they ate it!

Well that’s what Mr.Collins tought is today, I wonder what the next lesson will be, looking forward to it Mr.Collins!!!!

Well, first of all, one question was "How did the impact of the number of dots in one color have on the number of dots in the next generation"? Well, first the predators (us) take as many dots as we can depending on how close they are, or what color they are, or some other reason. Then we take that number of dots, which impacts the number of the next generation by producing either more or less dots depending on the number of dots that are still there.

The second question was "Why do you think more predators chose to 'hunt' the brown dots, as opposed to true greens and whites"? Well, from experience, although I chose mostly greens, I think that most people chose brown because it was the easiest to see on the white paper. It was probably also because since the browns were made of construction paper they were easier to catch than the whites.

The last question is "What does the theory of natural selection mean to you"? It is basically the theory of how we came to be, as well as many other animals. It means to let nature choose who survives and dies by random choice. It is a theory that helps us understand more about how we are here. Scientists have used this to discover new breakthroughs for the information about Early Humans.

These are basically answers to the questions I have above.

Alright! Here’s my opinion this.

I think that the impact was that based on the amount of dots that was captured, let’s say 4 browns, there will be 16 left. Now that 16 get to reproduce and the 16 will be multiplied by 2. I think that predetors will catch more browns than other colours because, maybe brown doesn’t really camouflage well into its surroundings, nothing really, other than wood. To me

To me, it’s quite simple. When a creature naturally selects a certain organism to eat, that organism doesn’t get to reproduce anymore since its dead. However, yhe organisms that survive, reproduce. It all comes naturally and the selection is completely random.

That’s what all this means to me.

Now that 16 that remain, get to reproduce and it will be multiplied by 2. I think that predetors will catch more browns than other colours because, maybe brown doesn’t really camouflage well into a lot of its surroundings. Not much, other than wood.

The theory of natural selection happens sally the time in our lives.

When I was the predator I noticed the white and brown dot a lot.
I think the reason is because the green ones might have been slightly obvious. Because of that the next generation had lots of brow dot and white.

I don’t know how to exactly explain natural selection through writing but her is what I can explain. Without natural selection we would not have had some of the species of animals or food that we have now.
