Novel Approach - Picture Books

Today, we had our last Forbidden City word work pre-test and then we started our phase 2 of The Novel Approach. Students reviewed learning intentions and reviewed what will be expected of them. For the read aloud of 'WHEN I WAS EIGHT', we modelled 'VISIBLE THINKING' of the thinking/learning/reading strategies verbally and students also shared their thinking and use of the strategies. Tomorrow, we will use our visible thinking to model the 'GIFT OF WORDS', 'THINKING & LEARNING QUESTIONS', and the 'RESPONSE WRITING'. This afternoon, students were introduced to the Beijing Mapping Assignment. Students used technology to find specific locations that follow the main character's escape route from Beijing.

1.) MATH: Complete any unfinished work. 3.9 Turning Fractions into Decimals

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Post 8 of these word work words and their definitions (IN YOUR OWN WORDS).
Reply to another student's definitions and write 8 different sentences using their definitions. All sentences must be your own sentences and must clearly show the meaning of the word.
Review the 8 sentences your classmate wrote for your words and agree or disagree with their use of the words.
Provide some feedback to your classmates in regards to their word usage.

1. Somehow, we did a great job of trundled our baggage from the entrance to the service center.

2. You know what’s interesting about today? I saw a police officer carried out a bunch of truncheons from their warehouse and handed them out to others.

3. Did you know there are people playing those pinball games in the next door? Where you try to ricochet your pinball to several areas in order to get points.

CORRUPTION- when a person (or group of people) with a lot of power makes choices that benefit themselves rather than others, in other words they abuse their powers

RICOCHETS- when a projectile bounces off a surface more than once

LITERAL- actually meaning what one says, lacking in sarcasm or exaggeration

AMBIDEXTROUS- one who can use both their left and right hand with and equal amount of ease for different tasks

COMMENTARY- an explanation that is the reasoning for whatever you are witnessing
