NOVEL APPROACH - VISIBLE THINKING

Today, you continued working with your picture books for a deeper understanding of the big idea. I was pleased to see all of you transferring over your knowledge and application of the reading strategies and visible thinking skills from the short pieces of text to the picture books. You are building on your learning piece by piece and you are learning to read for a deeper understanding of the text. I am happy to see the progress you are all making.

1.) NOVEL APPROACH DIV1: Complete your powerful response write on your story/poem.

2.) LA: Word work.

3.) MATH: Complete proportions worksheet if you haven't completed it yet.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Respond in paragraph format. (Div 1 - Feel free to give it a shot)
How will the reading strategies from 'THE NOVEL APPROACH' help you write a powerful response at the end of each picture book and eventually at the end of each novel you read?
Ask two students questions about their response.
Reply to at least one question you receive.
Edit/revise your original post based on the criteria for paragraph structure.

I think that the novel approach helps us write a powerful response because all of the strategy is visible. That means you can look back on what you thought of and ideas and you can just wrap it up in the powerful response.

Using the Novel Approach teaches you a ton of ways to broaden your understanding of what you are reading. By asking questions, making inferences, connecting, setting a purpose, etc, you understand the text on a deeper level, allowing you to write better responses. If you add connections, this shows that you are accessing your background knowledge and aren't just skimming over the words, you're really thinking about it, thus making your response more powerful and giving it more meaning because it is personalized. It also proves that you didn't just copy and paste something off of Google.

How can you write a powerful response at the end of a book if you don't know Novel Approach? Novel Approach gives us a better understanding of a book by setting a purpose, accessing background knowledge and making connections, visualizing, determining whats important, and making inferences. Setting a purpose helps you focus on why you are reading. Using your background knowledge, you can make connections which helps you understand the book more. Visualizing helps you get an image of what's happening. Determining whats important helps you write your big idea. Making inferences also help you find the big idea. So without the Novel Approach, you can't write a powerful response. That's why it's very important.

The Novel Approach strategies help you prove your understanding and deepen your thinking of the book so you can get the meaning of it more. Instead of using one plain "strategy" like for example: "She ran and ran like the flow of wind" and you just say it means she runs fast it's not a deep and powerful response. But if you put more effort and time into it and use many of the Novel Approach strategies then your responses are going to get better and better. If you put a reaction or question etc. it shows that you're actually reading and thinking about the words and not just reading the book like what you usually do. Summing up all these strategies will let you write a deep and powerful response from all the evidence that you got from the text.

The novel approach strategies will help you when you don't understand something so you will have to monitor your comprehension. Also before you read something you have to have a purpose of reading the context whether it is for pleasure, info etc.

The novel approach can further organize our information and store it when we require it (visible thinking) Things like the criteria can also help with the things you need to include. You can set purposes to get more work efficiently and be organized. A benefit for teachers can be the fact that they can look at our visible thinking and decide what level of novel approach we are. They can give us feedback this way and further push our learning into a new direction.

Using the novel approach is a great way of realizing the amazing work your brain is already doing! By making inferences, fishing out memories and connections, background knowledge, monitoring your understanding and well making you re-read something again when you don't understand a certain part.

If you haven't been doing this already, the novel approach is a great way to enjoy books easier and pick out the information you need instead of wasting time or leaving yourself frustrated.

It's boost to writing a powerful response because it helps you grab the essential information from yourself and the piece of writing. Monitoring your comprehension keeps you on track of stating your opinion and making sure you're understanding what you're writing yourself. Remembering questions you've had during the story (or whatever you were reading) and then answering them to conclude for your response.

Everytime we use visual thinking, make connections, and do a gift of words, we have more things to include in our powerful responses, and all the strategies can help us find the big idea/s. If I go more into detail, setting a purpose can help us have an opinion about the book. If we didn’t like the book, but were forced to read it, we could include that. Using background knowledge to make connections is a very crucial reading strategy, because it’s important for powerful responses, as it can make them seem more ‘powerful’ and meaningful. I think Monitoring comprehension is important, because you need to be able to understand what you’re reading, to form your own opinion. There’s also making inferences, which requires background knowledge, and evidence from the text. The other reading strategies (visualizing and determining what’s important) are all more ‘ammunition’ to use in your powerful responses. Which is why it’s always a good idea to try and use some.

Have you ever heard of you ever heard of "Novel Approach"? Novel Approach is a series of strategies that help you to better understand writing. Without doing this, you would probably get stuck really fast when making responses. If you ever have to give a response to a book you should try this! Without Novel Approach, you might have a harder time making connections to the quote, story or poem. It can really deepen your thinking and understanding of the writing since you're making connections, questions, and inferences. I find that the "Visible Thinking" can really help you with a good start. So now that I've told you about how great using these strategies are, get out there and try using Novel Approach strategies!

If you are going to write a powerful response at the end of each picture book , how will you write it. If I am going to write it , I will be using the reading strategies which actually helped me a lot. And that includes setting a purpose , making connections , monitoring comprehension,visualizing,determining what is important and making inferences. How did each of it help me , let me tell you now. First setting a purpose, it helps because you seems like you have a mission and this is what you have to do and so it can help you to like always being focus in it . Secondly , using background knowledge helped me a lot too. For example, cause if you got some personal connection and it is related to the book , I think it was actually easier to understand what is the book going on , cause like you already had a experience in it and you will probably know what they are feeling and you can feel more focused. Thirdly , monitoring comprehension , it can helped me to see if I actually know what the book is about . Fourthly, visualizing . You can actually memorize the photo , and when you are looking at the photo , it helped us to think of many thing when you look at the picture . Also , determining what is important. This seems like you are organizing what you write down on your sheet , and you can actually find the big idea from what you found , you can group up which is important and find it out . Lastly , making conferences. Sometimes if I just came you a word , you might don't know what it means , but after you read all through the book , and you might found out that that word is totally different of what you think at first . I think these actually helped me a lot , and these also can improve my in writing all my thinking.

What is novel approach? Novel approach is something you can't see, but helps you do your powerful responses after reading a book. Novel approach are things that you can put in your tool belt of tools to help you. It is made up of different reading strategies to help you write a powerful response, without these tools you can't make a powerful response like a craftsman can't make a statue without tools. These tools are the key to success for you to write any powerful response.

How can you write a powerful response? I think that the reading strategies from the “Novel Approach” can help you. The reading strategies from the “Novel Approach” are setting a purpose, making connections, making inferences, monitoring comprehension, visualizing, and determining what’s important. The reading strategies deepen our understanding of the story. By making connections, we can use our background knowledge to help us understand the part of the story that we are connecting to. When we monitor our comprehension, we can identify what we don’t understand, and then we can use some different strategies to help us understand it. When we visualize, we can see what’s happening in our brain which gives us a deeper understanding of what’s happening. By determining what’s important, we can find the main points of the story and we can figure out the theme. When we make inferences, we are utilizing our background knowledge and what we’ve read so far to infer about what’s going to happen next. This helps us to deepen our thinking and it helps us to find the big idea. In conclusion all of these strategies help us to write our powerful response by furthering our thinking, deepening our understanding, and helping us find the big idea.

How do you write a powerful response at the end of a picture book or at the end of each novel you read? That's a good question. How our teacher taught us was to use reading strategies. The reading strategies include setting a purpose, making connections using background knowledge, monitoring comprehension, visualizing, determining what is important and making inferences. These helped me a lot so I'm sure they will help you. So setting a purpose helped me because I feel like I have a reason to read and I'm not just reading for no reason. Making connections using background knowledge wasn't really a new thing to me so it didn't really help me much. Monitoring comprehension was a big help to me because it answers the questions I have through the book which is a really big thing. "We don't use our eyes when we visualize." That's what Mr. Hong says and it's true. When we visualize our eyes are mostly closed. I sometimes visualize better with my eyes open. Visualizing helped me because I can actually kinda see how it would have been with pictures if it were a novel. Determining what's important helped me because I know what the important parts are in the book. Making inferences helps a lot because you are guessing what will happen next using background knowledge and evidence from the text. If you can include all of these reading strategies, then I would say you are proficient.

Novel Approach. What is that exactly? It’s a series of strategies that can help deepen your reading. Setting a purpose, monitoring comprehension, connecting, etc. Now why would Novel Approach be helpful for doing any powerful response? It’s like ammo (as Mr. Hong said) you shoot the response and it creates holes. Those holes would be like what you put in your response. It’s also making it full of your information, making it meaningful because it was personalized by you. NO ONE HAVE THE SAME BACKROUND KNOWLEDGE AS YOU!!!

Time to write the powerful paragraph.. This is pretty hard, I must say. But you know what would make the progress flow better? Using reading strategies of course! *Cringes at beginning* I shall choose the top 3 strategies I think is the most important. Now let's go!
The first strategy I took from the list was monitoring comprehension. This step is very important, and probably the most important out of all of the strategies. If you don't monitor your comprehension, you would basically have no idea what's happening in the book. This is basically like making inferences except this step comes before the inferences. Without monitoring your comprehension there would be no way of you writing a paragraph based on the book you've read. Let alone a powerful response.
The second one I chose was inferences. I chose this one as the next one because I think that making inferences could make you think a lot deeper than you would. It's powered by something called 'cliffhangers'. I make inferences a lot on theories for newest albums. It's pretty frustrating.
The final one I shall choose is... Visualizing! This strategy would be helpful for those who learn quicker by looking at things. This way, you could imagine the scene from the book inside your head and remember it more. It would be added to your background knowledge and help you on your other books as well. These three reading strategies help me the most while I read. So feel free to use them! I totally recommend it!

Okay, so imagine this. You have finished your book/poem ect. and it is time for you to write a powerful response. You have no idea how to write one. But then you look to your right (or left) and find that all of the reading strategies are on pieces of paper. (Okay, you can stop imaging this now) Those reading strategies can help you with your powerful response. The strategies help you a lot. "How?" You ask? Well, the strategies that you put into your visible thinking are ammunition for your response. So basically you take the stuff you wrote down and you use it for 'back-up.'

The strategies will help you understand your book you are reading because when you make connection, purposes, asking questions, etc you can think deeper. When making connection using your background knowledge you are thinking about the book deeper because you can relate to things that happen in the book. Visible thinking also helps you lots because you are writing down all your thinking and using the strategies. Reading strategies help you think deeper into what you’re reading, rather then just reading and not understanding what you are reading.
