Autumn is here!

Today, students learned learned how to square numbers! In LA, they learned about one of the traits of good writing - VOICE. Mr. Bains clearly explained how to channel their 'VOICES' in their writing to create a scary story. In the afternoon, students continued learning various passing skills in basketball. During science, students learned more about climate change and the greenhouse effect. Your 'POST A RESPONSE' is related to your recent science lessons!

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

A few days ago, Mr. Bains read 'OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE' to you and you completed some activities around it. Rewatch the read aloud. Today, he taught you about the 'GREENHOUSE EFFECT'.
Using the reading strategies you have learned already, read/watch this story again and try to determine what YOU think the BIG IDEA is. (Setting a purpose, using background knowledge to make connections, visualizations, and monitoring comprehension)
Everyone will have a unique BIG IDEA.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can determine the BIG IDEA of 'OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph Structure (Intro, body, and conclusion)
2.) In your body, you must include at least 1 detailed connection and 1 visualization. Both must be clearly explained using examples of what you connected to from the book with your background knowledge.
3.) Check your work for the givens/conventions or writing (spelling, capitals, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation).
4.) Give one student who hasn't received any descriptive feedback, one or two things to improve on based on the above criteria.
5.) Edit/revise your original paragraph based on the peer-feedback.
6.) Check to make sure you posted your paragraph, posted your peer-feedback, and posted your revised version all on the same stream. Do not start a new stream. Just reply to your original paragraph. Keep your work organized!

Greta Book message

After reading that book, do any of you wonder what is the message of the story? Well I do and I'm going to tell you what I think about the message of the story. I think the message of this story was of course to alert people what is actually going on around the world. Some of you will think, “why do we need to know this? We already knew this”. Well even if you knew this, there are lots of people around the world who don’t. And even if you did know it, it's great to be more informative then being less. What I think the main message of this story is to alert people about global warming and if we don’t stop our changes, then things will happen like floods, animals dying and the air being really hot. This is why we need to stop global warming. That’s what I think the main message of this story is.

I believe that the big idea of this book is that if you focus on something and make a move you will eventually succeed. I thought of this because Greta learned about global warming in school which made her determined to fix global warming. She was dedicated to stop global warming which was why she sat outside of the Swedish Parliament every Friday in order to catch attention on global warming. The reason she caught so many people’s attention is because of her dedication, because of her dedication, she is now known all around the world and why more people are aware of global warming now. Greta Thunberg, a 17 year old Swedish environmental activist who gained international recognition for recognizing the situation of climate change and telling the world that it doesn't matter your age, your future is dying right in front of you. She went on stage to tell the authority what was happening to our Earth, she made sure to put some sense in their heads. Moreover, a book was created to show the world Greta's story. 'Our House Is On Fire' told how Greta was once an invisible girl who had interest in science, then, her house burned down. It wasn't because of careless cooking, or because of a cigarette or such, it was because of natural causes. She discovered the reason why and decided to take action. She skipped school and went on a strike on the roads. At first, no one noticed her, later on, word got out in school and other children began to join her. Not just here, but all around the world. The word spread globally and other children began to strike on the streets, showing that it didn't matter the age. "You say you care for your children, but yet, you're stealing their futures right in front of them." Greta said. She protests for fossil fuels to stay in the grounds and she wants what's right for the world and the future generations. Furthermore, I believe the message that the book is trying to send is to be aware of climate change. Take risks for the environment, do what you can do. Even if there are things that you can't do, there is always something. Age doesn't matter, what matters is that the planet is crumbling away at our very own feet and we're responsible for it, to pay our stay as permanent guests on Earth, we can save it, even if it's only an attempt.

My thoughts on what the big idea is, is if you put your mind and focus on what you want to achieve you can get to your goal that you want. What Greta wanted after she learned what global warming/climate change is, she started a goal to stop climate change and now she is known and heard all across the world. The way she started her movement to stop climate change, she sat at the Swedish parliament building and started going on strike for school so that she can be heard and other children went on strike too when they saw her every friday, many years later she became an activist for climate change and she makes government's aware of climate change so they can do something about it. This is my thoughts on what the big idea is.

Have you ever read the book called OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE? If not, it is about a girl who is desperately trying to tell the world that we should act for climate change. From the one of the quotes in this book, I can connect of me having doubts and researching to find a better resource instead of burning fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels can be a good way to make our lives more better, but it is polluting this earth with all of the emissions of them, which seems to be the primary cause to climate change. Also, when I read this book I visualized a girl whose trying to get attention from the government agents, but everybody is busy they won't even realize that she is there like an insect. I believe what the author is trying to tell to the readers of this book is that we should join Greta and stand up for what the government is not trying to deal with. In my opinion, the most primary cause to climate change is us humans.

Greta Thunberg, at the age 15 started protesting for people to care about climate change and prevent it. She and a few other people including her mom and her dad made a book on September 24, 2019 about her story. ‘Our House is on Fire’ is about Greta and her journey, where she struggled with herself because of climate change and how she continuously fought for a change in act even on the cold rainy days. The book is about climate change and in my opinion, I think the main idea was about spreading awareness about global warming. Greta’s goal with the whole School Strike for Climate was to spread awareness and save our future, it wouldn’t be expected for her to suddenly change the way she looked at this topic. Climate change needed to be heard around the whole world, and Greta Thunberg is trying/did do that. Greta Thunberg is reason for this all and she’s not the biggest giant on our earth, it doesn’t matter how small you are, it matters if you try or not.

We read “Our house is on fire” a few days ago. I don’t understand the title when I saw it. I thought it’s Greta’ s house is on fire. But I understand now. Let me explain to you. 😊
“Our house is on fire”, The house it is not mean the house we live. It actually mean “Earth”. But what is the “on fire” mean? It is mean the Earth is in danger. Why Greta work so hard on persuade people to be environmental protection? We always said We are never polluted the environment. Then why does the glacier melt, the altitude rises, and the climate get warmer? Maybe we never pollute. But there are so many factories are produced dense smoke every day. So that will let Climate be warmer and warmer. And the glaciers will melt and the water will let altitude rises.
Greta went to Parliament building to sit on strike every Friday. The only thing that accompanies her is a word plate that says "For the Climate". The purpose is to allow people to stop pollution. And then, so many children join her and also sit under the Parliament building. I think it's really extraordinary that a little girl can do this for the earth.

Do you know what climate change is? Well climate change has been in this earth for years. This is caused by green house gasses, carbon dioxide, toxic gas from cars, planes, boats, trains and way more. If we don't try to stop climate change now, it can cause some series damage to all the countries on earth. When ice bergs melt, the sea level rises so high that it could flood the entire planet. Gladly someone stood up and sat at the parliament house every day and encourage the people to take action now! Her name is Greta Thunberg, When she was at school her teacher explained to the class what climate change is. When she went home, she started to find more information about climate change. She started protesting every Friday with a whole bunch of other students and try to tell the government to take action now! Greta was also invited to go to America to talk about climate change and her plans to stop it. This means that no matter how young or small you are, you can make a huge difference.

If we continue on this path by 2050 the changes would be irreversible. In our class, we have also talked about the subject. During this time Mr. Bains read us “our house is on fire”. The book talks about how the “School strike for climate” started and brings attention to the issue. I have a connection with this because I’ve been on a strike/protest before. This particular protest was about the acknowledgement and passed treatment of the First Nations. There were hundreds of people and adults how had to bear the burden of residential schools. They also had a statue stacked up on a car, it was quite interesting. The purpose of that was to give First Nations more access to help. This brings me to the big idea of the book. I think that the purpose/main idea of the book was to bring more attention to the effects and causes of climate change. The book also gives u background knowledge of how the strike started, and how Greta Thunberg found her interest in the global issue. No one is too small to make a difference, and your actions will have consequences good or bad. Hope you keep up the good work.

If I were to find something to improve on. I would re do my conclusion I think it could “flow better”.

Greta Thunberg is a big part of the global fight against climate change. The book "Our House Is On Fire" explains a lot about her, and how she came to be so famous. I think the Big Idea is that Greta felt very bad because of climate change. She decided to start skipping school to go protest, because if climate change did not stop, school might not help her when she was older. Some of her friends started to help her, and it only grew from there. Now she is globally known.

Big idea, I think the big idea is that anyone can make a difference! Gerta has made us realize that Climate Change is something we need to worry about. It only started with Gerta if it weren't for her greenhouse gases would increase rapidly. People would be using plastics more and more, the factories would be making more plastic products and increasing productivity and greenhouse gases. If you were wondering why plastics cause greenhouse gases, plastic is made from different types of oil which is considered a type fossil fuel.

Good start Aisli. Try adding in some of your own thoughts on the book and how you connect to it. Remember punctuation makes a difference to the meaning of your words. Your sentence: "It only started with Gerta if it weren't for her greenhouse gases would increase rapidly." This makes it sounds like the greenhouse gases are Greta's. It should read: "It only started with Greta. If it weren't for her, greenhouse gases would increase rapidly." Periods and commas make a difference. Also spelling - check that people's names are spelled correctly.

Climate Change, it's not something that should be ignored. This is just what everyone protesting against global warming are thinking. When I hear about climate change, I connect to the protest in Vancouver, last year on the 27 of September. I remember going to this protest with my Grandma. We all went together to the peaceful protest. I remember standing at the end of the Burrard St. Bridge, watching the people go by and reading their signs. The signs were all very large and colourful. We read several saying "There is no Planet B". Others saying more unique things. As the people started thinning out, my grandmother was tired from standing and went home. My mom, dad, Aaron and I followed the crowd across the bridge. That took place on a Friday in school time. That day we skipped school. I think it was a good idea to do it on Friday because the next say, I was so tired. So STOP IGNORING CLIMATE CHANGE AND DO SOMETHING.

I think the main idea is to really open up our eyes and thoughts, to be wide awake and concentrate on the possibilities above all else. Do you know who Greta Thunberg and what climate change is? Climate change is an escalating problem where emissions of greenhouse gasses are causing the global average temperature to rise. Though it might not seem like a big thing at first, climate change causes many problems, such as sea levels rising and the flooding of cities; contamination of the air we breath; destruction of animal habitats; deadlier natural disasters, etc. The book "Our House Is On Fire", by Jeanette Winter, is about a girl (Greta Thunberg) learning about the effects of global warming and doing her best to be noticed to make a change. The big idea of the book is to express concern about climate change and how everyone can make a change. When Mr. Bains read the book to us, I could visualize how Greta acted after she learned about climate change. I strongly believe that the author did an exceptional job making us use our background knowledge to further connect with what Greta was thinking. Climate change is a huge problem, and we should all attempt to connect with Greta and do our parts in saving humanity.

In my opninion climate change will never stop until someone invents some kind of cool machine because, i dont think a lot of people know how serious this is until its to late, and even when they do they probably wont do anything about it Greta is a good role modle but she needs to help contribute too so we know that she's an actual role modle and not just someone that acts all great but is actually a person that doesent know waht we need to do.

After watching the video about "our house is on fire" what can i say? The story is just basically Greta seeing things caused by global warming and she is sad and things than she started a protested against a lot of people in the government branches. At the end this book is just about how Greta started her protest! So at the end I am confused, i am pretty sure all this protest isn't going to do anything since no one is just gonna give up and start driving or but a electric car so I guess global warming is gonna continue forever and humans are gonna be erased from the face of the earth (if it gets really bad) because we did something stupid!

Roen, Samantha is right. When you just write down from your head without following criteria or even bothering to reread your work, it really shows. You need to follow the criteria carefully, slow down, think about what you are going to say and then reread it to make sure it makes sense. Also, fix any grammar and spelling mistakes. A rushed job gets a rushed mark.

A 17 year old girl named Greta Thunberg felt the urge to change this earth. After she learned about climate change she knew she had to stop it from getting worse. What does "the house is on fire" mean? I visualize the house as the earth because that's where we live. I visualize the fire as forest fires constantly raging. I find it scary. By the time we grow up, who knows what the world might look like then if we don't do anything? "You're not too small to act" that struck me because I grew up thinking that if you are too young you can't do much. Mostly because everyone else thought that so I thought that as well. After seeing Greta making such a change though, I know it's definitely possible if you actually try. I think the big idea of all of this is that the world is in danger and Greta Thunberg is trying to stop it with many other children. In summary, I really want to help out too. I'll do simple things like using reusable items and cutting the straps of masks so animals won't get suck in them. This Earth needs out help and so does Greta. We need help if we want to save this world.

Our class read a book called Our House Is On Fire. We read it during science class, and it was about a girl named Greta Thunberg. Greta is a girl who wants to fight climate change. She protested in Sweden, and she was able to inspire other kids. I think that the big idea that the book is trying to tell you is that climate change is bad, and we should try to stop it. One connection that I have with the book is that I believe in climate change. The protestors in the book also believe in climate change, so they try to make others believe in it and do something about it. I also made a visualization during the story. I visualized huge icebergs melting, hurricanes and droughts devastating towns, and coral dying because of the heat. Climate change is something that we should be concerned about, and hopefully we could stop it.

Have you ever heard of the story of "Our House Is On Fire" well my class read it in our science class. It is about a girl who has been recognized by the news, this girl is Greta Thumburg. Greta stands up for climate change in the book when she said "I don't want you to be hopeful I want you to panic I want you to feel the fear that i feel every day......... I want you to act as if your house is on fire because it is" she said that to a group of officials. When we got the work sheet I got a visualization that she was talking to some billionaires and some government officials that are too high up in there bubble to realize what is happening to the world and who just contribute to so she is saying that she wants them to put them selves in the peoples shoes.
The big idea is that she wants to prove a point that if we can do our part and help out maybe just maybe they can hear us.

When we got this work sheet in class I made a visualization, that she was talking to a bunch of government officials and some snobby billionaires hat they where to high up in there own bubble to realize whats going on in the world. She wants them to be put in the peoples shoes and feel the fear we do.

The Big Idea: Is that she wants to prove that if we do our part and help out maybe just maybe or most likely because our voices can be so loud at times and I don't mean screaming they will hear us.

Greta learned about it in science class and thought "This is an important problem, why dont we act on it fast". She decided to do it herself and sat in front of the Swedish Parlement building with a sign saying "Change for climate". At first, she got ignored. But then, she started to get more people to join. More and more started joining her until someone posted the climate protest to the internet. It goes global and she started a movement called "Fridays for future" and encourages kids to protest for their futures by skipping school

Our House Is On Fire, written byJeanette Winter, is a book about girl named Gretta Thunburg. This book shows how Gretta gets lots and lots of people to reconize Climate Change. When I read the book, I had a connection/visulization when Gretta was waching the houses the roads being flodded. I saw on TV that when Japan had a typhoon, lots of large tsunami happened and some plases was flooded. Japan also gets lots of big earthquakes and because of that, tsunami happens too. Japan gets a lot of natural disasters so tsunami happens often and it does a serious damage to houses/buildings, people, lands, and crops! I also had a visulization/connection when I was reading the book. When I saw the wildfires that Gretta was waching, it reminded me about the Austrlian Wildfires. I visulized that the trees were burning down, coalas trapped in the heat, flaming fires spreading everywhere. For this book, the Big Idea for me is that to get kids to understand more about Climate Change easier. I think the Big Idea is this because this book had easy words and it was like a picture book. In my opinion, I had a connection about hurricanes, I had a visulization about the forest fire, and a Big Idea.

Do you know about how the climate is getting progressively worse each day? If you don’t there’s a book called “Our House Is On Fire”. The book shows the story on how Greta created a school strike for climate change. Greta even spoke to world leaders. She has a lot of meaningful quotes like “I don’t want you to be hopeful, I want you to panic, I want you to act like this is a crisis, because it is”.

Big Idea: I think the big idea is that climate change is speeding up and we need to save the planet, and also that you aren’t too small to make a difference so we need to do our part.

Did you know that climate change gets worse and worse every day? If you don't read the book "Our House is on Fire". It's a book about how a girl, who was never really noticed and was invisible, helped stop climate change. One day her teacher was talking to the class about climate change and it really affected her mentally. She would not stop reading/watching about it! In one of the things she saw it said that she saw blazing wildfires racing through the forest. When I heard that I imagined a forest filled with bright orange flames and all the trees that were once green are now black and and bursting into flames. On top of that I also saw massive clouds of smoke bursting out of the forest making it foggy for anyone who came close. One of the connections I made was when I heard of the coral reefs being all dead it reminded me of a documentary I watched about the ocean and how climate change affects it. And it showed a picture of an area with lots of coral reefs and another picture of it in the area but A couple years later. What is saw was that in the most recent photo all the corals were dead and all the fish that lived there were gone. That reminded me that if we didn't have the ocean, we would lose half of our oxygen production in the world, since there is something in the water that produces a lot of oxygen. After making these connections and visualizations it helped me understand that the big idea might be that you are not too small to make a difference. Take Greta Thunberg, she was only a teenager and she made a difference. That caused others to join in, and all over the world, people started protesting. So we can stop climate change from getting worse everyday. Greta helped prevent climate change from getting worse and so can we!
