Particle Theory of Matter

Today, half of the class was at the district track and field meet at Churchill. The rest of the class worked on Book Club until recess, starting to focus in on their Powerful Responses. After recess, the class started on their recipes for Pizzas in French! The students will later use these to make their own pizzas next week. Next came math, where the students started on the Cartesian Plane, and how to plot points. After lunch, the grade 7 students engaged in a science experiment to help them understand the particle theory of matter in terms of saturated/supersaturated solutions and crystallisation, while the grade 6 students continued their research and presentation of Extreme Environments in Space. At the end of the day, the students worked on their Social Studies inquiries to wrap things up. From the sounds of it, we had some winners in our class and at our school! Go Laurier! Well, done track team!

Today, the grade sevens of our class had conducted a small experiment, that allows us to use our knowledge of the particle theory of matter. The experiment involved dissolving borax, a solute, with heated water to create a solution. We used pipe cleaners and placed them into the container of Borax and water, by tomorrow they are predicted to give us our shape covered in crystals. This experiment was short and easy, but inside many different things are happening.

If the Borax dissolved in cold water, it would become saturated at a certain point, all the solute will form at the bottom, and it will fail to dissolve any further; This is because the water does not have enough energy, even if we stir it. However, if we use water at a boiling point, it gives the solute enough energy to extend the amount it can dissolve, creating a super saturated solution. Super saturation allows us to force the movement of particles to increase, creating space between the particles, for more solute to enter.

I had asked a small question during the working period, I wanted to test the extend of our super saturated solution, and so the class gathered to see the results. When we saw how much our solution was able to dissolve, I was shocked, as it became saturated when around 3/4s of the container was filled with borax. This shows how large of a difference there is between super saturated solutions, and saturated solutions.

In conclusion, this small activity allowed us to learn much about the particle theory of matter. We learned how saturated, and super saturated solutions work, we learned more about how solutes dissolve into solutions, and we get a small treat tomorrow as well, if there wasn't enough yet. Now we just wait till' we get those crystals :D

During chemistry class today the grade 7 students who were not at the track meet conducted a scientific experiment involving borax and hot water. The intention was to make a super saturated solution and create a makeshift snowflake. The borax acted as the solute, which was dissolved in the solvent, hot water. The proccess of adding hot water and borax eventually formed a super saturated solution, a mixture that is forced to be further saturated. The hot water added energy to the molecules, dissolving the borax crystals. When the solution could not dissolve any further, we stirred the solution to super saturate it. The borax crystals dissolved because I added energy to the solution, which allowed the molucules to spread apart and create more space between the molucules. Since the movement of moluecules in liquids is more fluid, there were more gaps, thereby allowing the borax particles to mix in with the water molecules. (Particle theory of matter.)

I learned an interesting fact today; ants cannot comsume borax due to the fact that it will consume their organs from the inside. Cool.

Anyways, it was a cool experiment nonetheless, and I look forward to seeing those superawesome snowflakes thingamabobs tomorrow.

"Two men saunter into a chemistry bar. The waiter asks what they would like to order. The first man says I would like some H2O. The second man says I would like some H2O too. The second man dies. Why?"

Well, the answer is the second man dies because the waiter mistook the order for H2O2, the chemical formula for Hydrogen Peroxide, which is a deadly liquid that can cause internal burns, stomach pain, and even death. Not to be taken lightly.

Today, the grade sevens conducted a scientific experiment involving not hydrogen peroxide, but borax and hot water. The intention was to make a supersaturated solution and create makeshift snowflake crystals. We began by pouring the solute borax to about 3/8ths of the jar. A solute is a substance in a solution that gets dissolved. Some solvent was poured in; hot water. A solvent is something in a solution that does the dissolving. The process of adding hot water and borax eventually formed a supersaturated solution, a solution that is forced to be saturated. The hot water added energy to the molecules, dissolving the borax crystals. When the solution could not dissolve any further, we stirred the solution to supersaturate it. The borax crystals dissolved because of the added energy to the solution, which allowed the molecules to spread apart and create more space between the molecules. Since the movement of molecules in liquids is more fluid, there were more gaps, thereby allowing the borax particles to mix in with the water molecules.

One cool fact I learned was that even supersaturated solutions will at a certain point become unable to dissolve any more solute and will, therefore, return to its original state as a saturated solution. The point for this in our experiment was about 5/8ths of the jar full of borax. Another interesting fact that is somewhat related is that ants cannot consume borax due to the fact that it will disintegrate their organs from the inside out.

As a recapitulation, this short and entertaining activity conducted today allowed us to learn a lot about the particle theory of matter and the five states of matter. We also learned about supersaturated and saturated solutions, and how solute is dissolved by the solvent. Can't wait to see those awesome crystals tomorrow!

Today in class I learned something when we did our science experiment.

When you mix a powder with water quickly, you're adding energy to a solution which makes it dissolve more powder in the mix. It then becomes saturated, but when you add more powder and mix it, it won't dissolve in the water. So, if you add hot water into the water, it will dissolve a little more of the powder because it has more space between the particles when you add hot water, It makes it super saturated. Once you add heat into the mixture, you will have movement of particles. Due to the particle theory of matter it states that all matter is made up of tiny particles, specifically atoms and molecules and once you heat up a particle in the water, it will have more space.

In conclusion, we learned how to make a borax snowflake and tomorrow we will see if it successfully worked.

@Zarif. I think you didn't explain today's experiment specifically. Even though I was not at school today, but I could still tell through the video and the hangout which proves your explanation will confuse others and also yourself when you read it again. Perhaps you should talk about how particles works in different matter, and what is does borax due to the result of your experiment. And different situations of making energy to make the borax dissolve into the water and becomes crystal. A few points you could still work on and to improve your paragraph.

@ Zarif - (You already have feedback but here’s just something to tell you.) Good job! I liked how you used scientific terms to explain your thinking. Though, there is one thing I need to mention. You should mention what happens when the heated up solution cools down. That is a key part to supersaturation and the explanation of Borax crystals.

When half of our class was outside at the track meet, the other seventh graders continued going about their day. One of the things that they did was Science, where they learned about crystallization and saturation. Although I wasn't there, I've learned enough from the links to come about a general idea of what you have learned.

First of all, there are about two main items in the module, which is the drink mix and water. When we add only drink mix to the container, there are only crystals that collect on the bottle since there isn't any water to dilute it. When we add a little bit of water to a lot of drink mix, the solution is saturated as the drink mix can't dissolve anymore into that less amount of water. However, the more water you add, the more drink mix that dissolves, and ultimately, the only thing left is just a bit of red color.

From what I can tell from the experiment, borax is like the drink mix in the module as it crystallizes and dissolves into the water as well. Since the water is hot and boiling, the borax can be contained better. The particle theory of matter tells us that there is always space between molecules (where the drink mix molecules go) and when the water heats up, the space between molecules gets bigger as there is more movement of particles and there is more drink mix particles that can fit in the space. However, when it gets colder, the water particles have less energy to keep going, and the borax crystallizes again... except on the pipe cleaner.

Basically, there are a few lessons that have been learned during the lesson (or at home). First of all, water can only dissolve so much of a solution. The maximum amount it can take is when there is a lot of water that is heated up. Secondly, when there isn't enough water to dissolve something, that something turns into crystals. Third, when water heats up, the space between it grows bigger and vice versa when water cools down.

In conclusion, this is another part of the particle theory of matter that we have learned. As we continue, I am curious about all the new experiments that we will do later on.

In previous lessons of Science, we learned a bunch of stuff from states of matter and how particles and molecules work in different situations. And through the video, I realized how powerful and magical chemistry is. It’s like when you pour some powder into the water and it becomes ice.

However, that was definitely not ice, but crystal. Crystalline solid has its own pattern, and it must be a definite structural order of molecules. And through the online activity, I also noticed that the concentration will always change since every time when I change something in the tub. When you pour some drink mix in clear water the concentration must increase and will be dissolved into the water and make places between both of the molecules. Furthermore, if you add some more water into the liquid which contains drink mix, the concentration will be apparently decreasing.

However, still, I am not sure of how this activity motivates our thinking of knowledge, and how it relates to our experiment. I am still looking forward to know more.

During the chemistry lesson today, we did an experiment between the saturated and supersaturated solutions dissolving. I learned that saturated solution takes time to dissolve, even if we mix it with a spoon. However, the supersaturated solution dissolved much faster since there’s more energy (heat) that allows salute to quickly dissolved. The speed of dissolving a salute is due to the space between the particles. Once we add energy (heat) to the solution. The particles started to move around at a faster pace, it allows the particles to move in a bigger space. In the situations where we put to much drink mix, (in this case we meant borax) to the solution. It wouldn’t dissolve properly since it has already reached that saturated point. But if we add more water into the mixture, it would slowly start to dissolve. As known borax is a form of crystals, the molecules are arranged in a specific repeating pattern. Once the solution cools down, the molecules move closer again. There we have the base pipe cleaner, therefore allows the crystals to grow on.

Chemistry always surprises me with new lessons and unique experiments that explains clearly what we need to learn. Today, Division 2 did an experiment with Borax and water. We were making a Borax snowflake. The experiment uses the particle theory of matter and how supersaturated solutions behave. Not only does the product in the end look amazing, the process to it is also very fascinating to learn about.

So, what is the difference between an unsaturated, a saturated, and a supersaturated solution? An unsaturated solution has less solution than a saturated solution. It can still dissolve more solute. A saturated solution dissolves all the solution it can at that temperature. The saturation point of solutions can depend on the temperature, solvent, and solute. In the online model, the drink mix is the solute and the water is the solvent. When we add too much solute or drink mix, it goes from unsaturated to saturated. There will be extra bits that we call suspended particles. They cannot dissolve anymore because it is the already up to the saturation point of the solvent. If we add more water, we will dissolve some of the suspended particles. Add even more, and it will become unsaturated again. Now, the important one is a supersaturated solution. A supersaturated solution is made when the solvent (water) is heated and more solute (Borax) can be added. Heat adds energy to the particles, therefore making a bigger gap between the particles. When a supersaturated solution is cooled down, the solute stays the same amount to when it was at a higher temperature. This kind of breaks the rule and lets more solute dissolve in a solvent that isn’t supposed to at that temperature. Though, when one single particle is added to the supersaturated solution at that point, the whole solution will split back into a saturated solution where all the suspended salt appear again. This is how you make crystals.

What does that have to do with the experiment? Well, when the solution cools, the water molecules lose energy and become closer to one another. This causes the crystals (formed when cooling the solution) cling onto the snowflake.

To summarize, this is how you make a Borax snowflake and the science behind it. I hope to learn more and more about all these interesting things in Chemistry!

Unfortunately today I miss the science experiment the other grade seven have today, because of the track and field. Which make me take a lot more time to do this since I had no idea a single thing about it. Which after research still had no idea. So, I just lookat other people’s par and try to figure it out. And it was super hard!Any way, the online module Mr.Hong tell us to use is very useful it first show up is the one I want, the drink mix. So, as the par today I try to just add adding drink mix.
First experience, for first experience I try just adding solid drink mix add it all gather together which was quite obvious, but still excite me. When I add the water it start to disappear and change the color of the water. It turn from dark red to light pink, so when the jar is fill with water I add more solid drinking mix. Which turn it again to dark red and then has some of the mix on the bottom. Then for the solution drinking mix it is basically the same as solid drink mix, but the only when to get the drink mix to gather on the bottom is to evaporate it.
So, from the online module experience and the research I do I think the learning behind the activity is Crystals can form when a supersaturated liquid that contains a dissolved mineral cools.I think the reason why choosing this activity is because it shows us that a supersaturated solution was made using hot water and borax which after research know that it is a soft crystal. So, as the solution cools, the water molecules come closer together and causing the forming borax crystals to cling to the pipe cleaner. Which was really cool.
In concluetion I think this might be a particle theory of matter that I have no idea with.But still I think it is very cool, too bad I miss it. And since the experiments they do today was so cool I am starting to be very curious about the new experiments that we will try later on.

Yesterday in science we learned about saturated and supersaturated mixtures. A saturated mixture is when you dissolve a solute (in this case we will use salt) into water and it fully dissolves. A supersaturated mixture is when you mix water and salt together until it dissolves, and then add more salt and water to make it supersaturated. You’re basically forcing the salt to dissolve when adding more water. How does the salt dissolve in the water? For example if you used cold water, it would take a long time for the salt to find space between the particles, since cold slows down. When adding heat(energy) it moves faster therefore the particles move into the waters spaces quicker. When energy(water) is added to salt, it dissolves. Using all this knowledge we were able to create very cool borax crystals!

Today, Div.2 had a fun experience with borax and water, unfortunitely, I wasn't here yesterday, because I was in the track meet, so I can't explain this experience very well. Luckly, The online module is very "real", so I can do it with out moving!!!

First of all, I first tried to put the drinks mix in to the solid water, and it turns out the water is saturated, I think it's because of i add to much drinks mix, wait, wait, wait, what is saturated? A saturated solution is a chemical solution containing the maximum concentration of a solute dissolved in the solvent. Now we know what's saturated, unsaturated is much more easier to understand, unsaturated is the opposite of saturated, if we don't add too much drinks mix, then it's unsaturated. The most important, and fun part, supersaturated, supersaturated contain more of the dissolve tahn could be dissolve, when we add too much solute and heated with water, it will tunrs out that we made a supersaturated!!! This experment can causes crystal.

Overall, this is how the science is connected to the snowflake. After this experiment, I learned more about chemistry.
