Pencil to Pixels

Today, students made progress on their pencil to pixel project and their Novel Approach work. Although the school year is winding down to a close, the learning is not. The students also finished off their learning summary conferences. Students will have a few more opportunities to improve on their learning activities. The learning never stops at Laurier, not even after the last day of school. Every day is a learning experience for all of us. Keep learning and working hard! S.O.A.R. like an eagle who is flapping his or her wings high in the sky!

1.) ART:

If you have a mobile device (android or ioS), download the ibis Paint X app.
Play around with this app by taking a picture of your drawing and inserting it into the app.
Try out some of the tools/functions.
See if you can figure out how to fine-line your pencil drawing within the app using a fine-lining tool.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Read for 45 - 60 minutes.
Continue making note of all strategies you have used and how it helped you with your understanding of the story.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this song and listen to the lyrics.
Use your 'NOVEL APPROACH' reading/strategies to help you understand the meaning of this song.
Write a 'POWERFUL RESPONSE' on the big idea of this song in paragraph form.
What is the message?
Don't forget to back it up with specific examples from the lyrics/song.
Ask one or two students a question about their powerful response.

Wear sunscreen. The first thing in the song. A very useful tip if you are going to the beach on a hot sunny day. But it is queer as it is used in a song, as it doesn’t really mean to wear suncreen.

I think the big idea for this song is that you can free for your choices. In the song, there is a lot of examples, like the song says you don’t have to worry about others teasing you if you do something. For instance, dancing, singing etc. It’s like they are controlling you choices of stuff. The song says that you might marry, you might have children. It also says not to feel guilty. These are all apart of being free.

Since the song was hard to understand, I used some reading strategies to help me understand the song. I connect to when I don’t know what to do sometimes, because all the choices are gone; in the song, there is a part that says that you can do stuff that scares you, or that makes you think you others will laugh at you.

Overall, the big idea of the video was that you are free to do any choices.

Depending on the person, the emotions they feel may be exerted through different means. Many people withdraw to literature and music, to use different forms of composition to help support their own feelings. Many have used songs to send a large message, songs such as Count on Me show a very direct message, but certain songs make it more obscure. The song we were presented today, was known as Everyone is Free to Wear Suncreen. It features a man delivering cryptic advice while being backed up by motivating compositions of music. The speech this man delivered is to be valued, as it tells us about the doubts of every person in society. I feel that the reason for the title "Wear Sunscreen", is a metaphor for mental security.

After my first decade of living, I began to meet people who were quite toxic. It began troubling to try and talk to them, without leaving feeling annoyed. These sort of people can act like the burning sun in a sense. It burns the outer layer of your skin, and it makes you lose your vigor. You apply sunscreen to keep cool, so you can enjoy the bright and beautiful day ahead of you. Don't let the toxicity of others ruin your mind, and stay strong so new frenemies will not be able to hurt you.

When someone is faced with some sort of mental barricade, whether it be heartbreak, depression, or any other issue, they most commonly escape to those close to them, so they can cope with their feelings. Having someone to listen to you, and sympathize with your feelings, can be incredibly valuable. Because of this, many people escape to their parents to help with this. This is why it is very important to value those close to you, as a strong relationship could be broken in an instant. Being able to connect with your family and friends are vital to a healthy life, as without them, you would be alone, with no one to help you. Many have gained a noticeable amount of depression from being isolated, as I had done once as well. It takes strength to ask for help. but those who care about you will be there for you, and you should do whatever possible to cherish them.

In conclusion, those who are faced with mental troubles, must do their best to help themselves, to stay strong and happy. Build a strong mind, and trust in those who trust in you. If not, you might get sunburn.

The first thing I thought about that song was about caring and not caring at the same time. You care about your siblings, your parents, and close things, but the things you should not care about is to ignore how others criticize you, for the better or worse.

We tend to listen to others when they criticize us or point out mistakes, as if we expect them to know everything about us. What bothers me is that sometimes, people are hypocrites and pretend that they don't do the same bad things we do. "Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with people who are reckless with yours." These lyrics really point out how people tend to be hypocrites and hurt others, only being affected when they're the ones being judged.

In conclusion, don't care about what people tell you, you should only care for the things you are comfortable changing and the things you hold close to yourself.

I think this video is a meaningful video, it helps us understnad life and give us tips of lives.

In this youtube video"sunscreen ", explains the issues to have a good life. According to this youtuber, it tells us many useful strategies that can be used by young people. Moreover, it tells us in a fun way to survive and lots of quotes that we can write it down on a notebook. For example, the youtuber said that don't waste your time on jealously;sometimes, you are ahead, sometimes you are behind. I think the word that inspire me is :don't waste time on jealously, in our lives, we don't have to time to be jealous, even if we have time, we cna do the things that we always wanted to do but have a fight with others.

When I first look at the video, it first siad that we have to put on sunscreen on our body, I actually thinks that it means we have to put on sunscreen.However, while I keep reading the video and think about this question that came up in my mind, I realize that it's the main idea of this whole video. Sunscreen is obviously a very useful tip to bring when we are doing activity outside, it is trying to tell us that the video is also very important, it can make your life easier. There's full of tips in this video, if we follow them, we can definatelly learn something. For example, don't expect other people to encourage you, you are the only one who can encourage yourself, I think this one is as importnat as the sunscreen, we can't tell other people to encourage you, it's not respectful and not helpful.

In sum, this video use sunscreen as an example, to tell people the tips of life, we shall all follow the tips, then we can succeed. Overall, the big idea of the video is that there's many possibility to do anything that we wnat, if we want to do something, just go for it, because we are still young! :)

Wearing suncreen? Are we seriously suppoed to watch a seven minute long vieo about wearing suncreen? Hello? Then I realized that wearing sunscreen was just a very random thing not related to anything.

Overall, I didn't think the video had a main idea, because to me, it didn't make any sense and left me feeling quite dismal and discombobulated. I will try my hardest. Okay, after seven minutes and four seconds of thinking, I determine their to be two main ideas. The first one is that you are free to do whatever you want. This is like human rights in Canada; we have the freedom to everything legal. The second one is don't be a hypocrite/know-it-all and act all haughty and criticize others for doing something that you are doing. The song points out that don't care about others that much, care about yourself more.

In conclusion, this song is not about sunscreen, it is about caring and not caring, and freedom.

In my opinion, I think the big idea of the song was about making judgments and decisions. Oftentimes, life is simple. You make decisions and you don’t look back. It’s just sometimes we make it seems over complicated. One of the sentences I one of the sentences in the song“Whatever you do, don’t congrats yourself too much or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance so as everybody else’s.” Surely it is true. Our future’s not set, there’s no fate but what we make ourselves; so why not aim for a better one? While watching this video, it really brought me to the thoughts of how I should treasure with all the amazing learning opportunities and make it work out. I need to start working on it, grasp all the possible chances, for I don’t want myself to feel regret in the future. This video includes all those life lessons into each and every simple sentence.

Based on each of the person’s background knowledge and experiences, I believe we all have strong connections while listening to the song. Reading strategies helped me synthesize and evaluate the song. I also used my monitoring comprehension strategy, I rewatched the video three times; therefore I have a better understanding of what the big idea is. In addition, I like the idea of putting sunscreen on. To me is it about being strong since sunscreen allows us to have extra protection.

In conclusion, this video is something that I would like to watch again in the future. It is very inspiring and interesting to watch. I’m sure I’ll have a completely different perspective if I watch it again.

My first impression of this video: It must be talking about how wearing sunscreen is good for you! After all, the title states that...

If you know what you're actually doing, we must use the reading strategies to see what the big idea actually is, and not just read the title and give a random big idea. I used those particular reading strategies to synthesize and evaluate and find a big idea.

After using those reading strategies, I have a general idea that the big idea of this song is to make the most out of life and having the freedom to do things that you won't be able to once you get older. You must ignore those people who try and drag you down, while rising up yourself.

The first thing I did was set a purpose, which was to use reading strategies for the lyrics in the song. I made connections, such as the place where it states: "The race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself" because sometimes it feels like the only person holding you back is yourself. Your friends may encourage you but at the end, it will always be yourself that is the greatest obstacle. There were a few visualizations, too. For example, "Maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary" gave me the weirdest image of an old grandma doing the chicken dance... something that I'd rather not see. Anyways, these, and other reading strategies all helped me find out what the big idea was.

In conclusion, all pieces of writing can be understood better with reading strategies, and learning them in class has really helped.

I don't really think this video makes me reminds me of any novel approach skills or just like making me confuse. However, here're some points I think the maim idea should be. First, sunscreen is something for protecting you from the melting sun and having sun burn. So, it made me think of building me strong heart and be confident on being whatever you think it right. Although you got confident, things that you have never thought of could really hurt you sometimes. Criticism, comments, or even racism. The best way is to not be caring of those stuff cause huge negative affections and feelings. Just don't care about it. In conclusion, caring your family, siblings and someone who are looking for you to care. Ignore criticism which hurts you and build a strong heart to defend and be strong enough and not collapse.

This song doesn’t have a very deep meaning, but that doesn’t mean it still not a good meaning. The lyrics in this video shows that you should always wear sunscreen. Having a sun burn could harm your skin, and even make your skin dried up and peeled. Even if you wear sunscreen and you’re still red and have dried skin, you’re not different. Some people burn very easily and feel ashamed to go outside looking different. That shouldn’t matter what others think, that’s their opinion. If you feel comfortable in your own skin, then you can do whatever ya u want. Having dried skin or even something different than others shouldn’t matter. Always listen to the positive sides of things.

Sunscreen? My mom once told me that not wearing sunscreen can cause ageing. After watching the video, I still didn't understand why sunscreen was the title. I then realized maybe it was referring to how your life choices can affect your future, just like sunscreen.

In my opinion, I think that the big idea of this song would be "live in the moment". I thought that this song was really hard to understand. It left me with lots of questions, so I rewatched it several times and read the lyrics several times. I still don't really get the big idea.
This video talked about how we shouldn't waste our life thinking about bad things and take risks. It taught me that life is short, and we can't waste it. Once, my friend asked me if I would rather live for another 10 years but have no regrets, or live to 100 and have many regrets. At first, I thought 100, because it's much longer. but then I realized, whats the whole point if I have a long but boring life. So I would rather live 10 more years.

In conclusion, I think that this song uses sunscreen as a reference to what the big idea of the song is.

Everybody’s free to wear... sunscreen? How is this going to be meaningful and connecting to me? That was the impression I had before watching the video. Now, after watching the video, I have a whole new understanding and interpretation of the big idea. Using the reading strategies, I was able to synthesize and evaluate the big idea in the end.

In my opinion, I think the big idea of this is to enjoy life and make the most of it before you become too old. Don’t wait until the future to regret about your past decisions. Make wise decisions in life and don’t waste your time on unnecessary things. Try not to compare yourself to others. Value those who love you and enjoy your time with them while you can. Don’t worry too much about life. The choices and paths you’ll take are all chosen by yourself.

I got to this big idea using several reading strategies. By using them, I was able to gain comprehension and understanding of the book and its big idea. First, I set a purpose. My first purpose was to just get a feel. I wanted to see the overall idea and meaning. This allowed for deeper thinking next time I go through it. My second purpose was to make connections. I used this strategy because it helps me connect and relate with what I’m reading. For example, I had connections with the line where it talked about not looking at beauty magazines. Like beauty magazines, the internet and social media has become a place where we compare ourselves to others. It has made significant impacts on our lives. And my last purpose was to visualize the text. This helps me see and understand everything better and with more depth. I visualized how I would grow up and realize how much time I had wasted. I visualized how life would have been if I used all the time correctly.

In the end, all these strategies helped me get a better understanding of both the book and its message. These strategies will always come to use, no matter when and where. I am glad to have learned them this year!

I think that the Big Idea of this song/video is that you should live life to the fullest. Put some sunscreen on to preserve your skin. Be nice to your siblings because they might be one of your closest friends in the future. Your future self will thank you.

In the song they say that you should "Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future" I think that this is somewhat true. If you do something that kills the bond you and your siblings have you might be all alone in the future. The message this song is trying to say is that you should take on life with a positive attitude. Make good life choices. Keep and break bonds.

In conclusion I think that you should make the most of life while you still can. The future is unpredictable.(Sort of.)
