Organizing inquiry questions for knowledge building circles!

Today, students started their new inquiries. The beginning of the inquiry process requires students to come up with questions they are interested in learning more about. As the students know, 'QUESTIONS' are one of the BIG 6 Learning Principles. A good inquiry question is one that you cannot simply answer from a simple Google search. It requires asking new questions, ongoing research, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of researched information. What are your two areas you want to improve in this time?

IMPORTANT:

Make sure you bring your tiles in this week. Also, I will send home a notice tomorrow for the tile art. All students will be expected to bring in $4 to cover some of the costs for materials (Ikea Mirrors, grout, thin set, etc. Feel free to bring this in tomorrow.
There will be a homework check before you enter the class tomorrow. Parents will be contacted for those who do not complete their work.

This website is reliable because you can contact them by email. It may also be reliable because because the website was made in 2017. It could also not be reliable because they do kind of have a strong opinion. Plus they want you to get involved. They probably just want some money. I trust/don't trust this site. I'm sure that the facts are true though.
(I can't remember the other ones).

My question is, How did a day in life for a human change overtime?
My sub-questions are, How dangerous of a animal can they hunt and eat, and What do the early humans do on a daily basis.
Some things the early humans did on a daily basis are basic things like hunting for food and the sleep like we do, but they have to build there own shelter.
I didn't use any website because I couldn't really find any good ones so I just used my background knowledge that I got from watching the movie about early humans and I am pretty sure that the movie is reliable because the teachers told us to watch it.

I believe this website is reliable because it the website to a museum about natural history and the site was just updated today so it should be pretty new information. I believe this website is reliable because its an actual museum and the museum is based in natural history.

How did the insides of a Homo Erectus change over time?

Sub Questions:
1.) Did the bodies of early humans get more and more resistant to germs, bacteria, and other dangerous organisms?

2.) Did a early human's liver, gut, and stomach take up a lot of space because there are many germs in the food they eat?

When I found a trustable website I learned a new fact, and the fact was very helpful to my inquiry project. My question is How did the insides of a H. Erectus change overtime. That includes the bones, livers, lungs, brain, and so on.

First the website is very trustable for three main reasons. The first one is that it is very up to date because it was last updated 7 November 2018. The information on the website must be new, and include all the new findings in science. That makes the website have good information.

Secondly, the website was created on behalf of the Natural History Museum in the U.K. It has all the things a museum website needs. For example, it has a page where you can volunteer for work, and another page for school field trips. It has a 4.7 star review. 10,000 people rated the museum.

The last reason is that I searched up the museum and found out that it is a real place. Its intention is to make money, and teach people. I added in the money part, because every museum has that purpose.

Finally, I learned that a Homo Erectus' brain is 550-1250 cubic centimetres. Modern day humans (Homo Sapiens) have a brain size of 1350 cubic centimetres. That means we are big brain, and that the brain of a early human has grown. There are a lot of differences between H. Erectus' and H. Sapiens.

Therefore, the website I used to find this fact is both trustworthy and helpful. Although,there are many other websites I need to find to complete my inquiry project.

I used the video that we showed in class because that was lot of understandable info newish and reliable. It also sparked lots of ideas in my head fuelled my background knowledge.

How did the early humans hunt?
Sub questions:
- who were the early humans prey (like who wanted to hunt them)
- where and how did they hunt their prey?

Something interesting I learned is that the skull from the early humans had some bones from small animals, some animal bones have been damaged which I'm guessing is because they ate it.
I used a video to get information about which animals try to hunt down the early humans. This video seems pretty reliable because it was made by a very trustworthy company PBS i'm not sure if i'm talking about the same PBS but eh, and also because it wasn't like other fact channels where they just talked about random facts they just found on google and don't explain how, they gave lots of information about the topic and they were pretty relevant.

Question: How did we originate in Africa and why did we leave Africa?

Sub Questions: When did we leave Africa?, How did scientists figure out we originated from Africa and why we left.

An interesting fact i learned is that we only started to leave Africa between 60000 to 70000 which i was really surprised since i thought we left way earlier. I got this information form https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/human-journey/ and i know this is a reliable source since it's national geographic and it's a reliable source also it was updated this year which makes it more reliable since it probably have new research found by scientists.

Question: How have humans changed?
Sub questions
~ How has human evolution affected humans?
~ Are they any drawbacks to evolution?
For this PAR, I am going to research my second sub question.
I learned that humans evolved to have less body hair. Which means they can sweat! Sweating may not seem like a big deal, but humans use it to regulate body temperature so they don't get to hot. This has affected humans because they can now hunt prey easier.

The video that I watched was the becoming human documentary that Mr. Fisher and Mr. Hong showed. I believe this source is reliable because firstly our teachers showed us this video, and they would never show us an unreliable video or website.
Secondly in the video you get some information on who is giving out the facts. They all are from universities meaning they probably are very knowledgeable
Finally I think its reliable because theirs no opinion in it at all and its seems to be a video that's only giving out information.

My inquiry question was: how did using fire benefit early humans?
Sub-question are:How did fire help that early humans? what would have happened if they never knew how to build fires?
I learned that fire would have been useful not only for light and warmth at night, but to frighten off predatory animals, and the smoke would have been effective in keeping insects away. This website is probably reliable because it ended in .com, they leave you with contact information and I verified the information from different sources. One interesting thing I learned is that there are so many sub-questions on how fire benefited early humans.

My question was "How did the evolution of early humans to modern humans work?

A few sub-questions I thought of was, could two stages of early humans coexist? What was the average amount of time for early humans to evolve into a new stage of human compared to today?

Something I learned from https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/evolution/evolution5.htm, is that about ten percent of sperm or egg cells can have an inheritable mutation that is not harmful to us. I think this website is reliable because the person who wrote this article Marshall Brain was the founder of HowStuffWorks. He has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master's degree in computer science from North Carolina State University. This article was also posted this year so I think it is pretty recent.

I learned that humans actually have a natural instinct to preserve and bury deceased bodies rather than just leaving it out to rot.

Inquiry Question:
Why did early humans populate Africa and why did they move?

Sub Questions:
What were the early humans diet?
Why did early humans flourish in Africa?

Research
They ate mostly meat to fuel there bigger brain.
Ate all sorts of different sized animals, including giant ones like the Giraffe.
most likely scavenged the bigger animals.

One interesting thing I learned was that the homo erectus had a shorter digestive tract, which provided them energy faster.

What I learned: -homo erectus can eat plants

Early humans. What an interesting topic to dive into!
I bet it fills your brain with many inquiry questions. It’s exciting to learn about our fascinating history and how we have evolved.
Today I will be answering my sub question.
What did our ancestors die from? (Main cause)
The main cause for their death is from bacteria and from infectious diseases. They got infected by bacterium that causes stomach ulcers, herpes, tapeworms and tuberculosis. Some of our ancestors died from lack of food and water too.
The site I used was theguardian.com the site posts many articles but this article was posted 2 years ago. I’d say this is still fairly new but this site seems trustable because it ends in .com which means the site is usually reliable and also they have newsletters, guardian weekly, todays post, podcasts, register and sign in, today’s paper, about the website information and much more! The editor of the guardian website has a profile picture and has been a Canadian editor for the website for 10 years and the photo seems legit and everything plus it also updates it’s website every week and has many current information and news.
In conclusion, I have learned much today and applied the CRAPP test on the website “the guardian.com” and it has proven it be a reliable and helpful website!

Today both classes were asked to generate ideas of questions on or about Homo Erectus/ Homo Sapiens/ and early humans. Here are my questions that I came up with, during our inquiry session.

Main Question: How did early humans physically evolve over time?
I choose this question because I was extremely interested in the process that they endured to become larger and grow a bigger body, and how their minds grew.

Sub Questions:
Q1) What if early humans did not evolve in time, and we were all still Early humans or Homo Erectus?

Q2) How did early humans adjust to warmer or colder temperatures?

I did not really find anything interesting yet, that is because when the fire drill was beginning to ring, I was thinking of some questions but I forgot to so I didn't write them down in time, and that kept me off track.

My question was how would homo erectus know what is safe to eat and what is not? My first sub-question is what are the symptoms of eating bad meat and my second sub-question is how did homo erectus know what meat was safe to eat?

I learned that if you eat bad meat you will get food poisoning. If you have food poisoning you may vomit and have diarrhea. I used the website www.health.gov.on.ca. It was made by the government and their social media account has been posting messages recently about health concerns.They also have true facts. I think it's an official website.

SQ: How does food affect our lifespan? Medicine? Surroundings? etc?

Food greatly affects the life span of homo erectus. Since I couldn't find a good website, I mainly used my background knowledge. Since fire was quite hard to acquire in the olden days, homo erectus most likely ate most of their food raw. Eating raw meat is a huge hazard for your body. Raw meat is full of bacteria, that can give you sicknesses such as food poisoning. Now, we can eat certain types of raw meat, but only because of our special sanitation tools. Raw meat is also very hard on your stomach because it's so hard to digest. As we learned in the video, elders will also have a hard time eater since the meat is very stringy and tough. This will strongly affect your lifespan.

In my research, I learned that there are five types of hominids closest to humans. Homo Heidelbergensis, Homo rudolfensis, Homo Floresiensis, Homo Erectus, Homo Neanderthalensis and homo sapiens. I feel like this is a reliable source as the author seems to be qualified as she is the global science correspondent for the bbc. There is also no political agenda behind this (unusual for the bbc) and it is fairly recent (from 2015) . One interseting thing i learned from this article is that they found 149 tools in just 1 site.

I was trying to research about fire, but instead found the many benefits that inventing fire did for the early humans. I also learned that our society probably wouldn't be what it was today if our ancient ancestors hadn't discovered fire.

Ok, first of all, I know it's Wikipedia but I'm pretty sure it's not fake because even though everyone says Wikipedia isn't reliable because the information on there can be easily changed, it's pretty rare that a site would actually be hacked. Anyways, I think this is a legit site because it was updated recently, probably to display the more recent discoveries of our ancient race. It also has relevant information of the fire discovery, and the information also seems real. The site also talks about fires spreading, which was also confirmed when I searched up on multiple other sites, so if you put all that together, it's probably legit.

My main question is, "How has our overall appearance and physique changed since Turkana Boy's time?". Two of my sub questions are, "Did it change for better or for worse?" and "If so, how?". An example of a change is having smaller teeth/jaws. The website that I found is http://humanorigins.si.edu/human-characteristics/bodies. Three reasons why I believe that this is a reliable source of information are:
1. This site was last updated on November 12 2019, which is very recent.
2. The information is on topic and relevant to answering my questions. It also includes examples of different skeletons from different times in the past.
3. There's no actual author listed but it's from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History which is a pretty reliable source.
A fact that I've learned from this website is that after the early humans started moving towards the colder areas, their bodies became shorter and wider to conserve heat.
