R2R International Film Festival for Youth

Today, we spent the day at the Roundhouse Community Centre participating in the R2R International Film Festival for Youth. Each film you saw was powerful and had deep meanings. You were lucky to be part of a Q & A session with Andy Alvarez. In addition to this, you participated in a film making workshop where you collaborated and created short films with your groups. We were all impressed with what you all created.

1.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Be prepared for book club meeting #2.
You are accountable to your entire group.
Complete the assigned readings, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose one of the short films you saw today and write a powerful response paragraph about the 'BIG IDEA'.
Include your background knowledge and connections, inferences, visualizations, etc.
Your powerful response paragraph must include an intro, supporting sentences, and a conclusion.
You must clearly explain what you think the big idea is and why you think this.
Think deeply about the films and ask yourself why the film maker made the movies. For example, what was the deep meaning about the Finnish boy and how he stole food? What was the significance of the marbles? Why did the boy say 'There was a lot of empty space' when he went to his father's funeral? Why did the girl hate Canada?
Edit and revise your post for the givens.

I forgot the movie title but its the one with the packing.

I thought the big idea was that when you don't care about something, they won't really care about you either. That main character's dad only cared about how his luggage was placed inside his suitcase, which made the main character care a lot about it. His father didn't really care about him so did he himself. You can really tell that he only cared about luggage and not his father himself when he was at the funeral. He looked at the coffin with his dead father, he still said "There was a lot of empty space". I thought this film had a lot of meaning behind it and this film's deep meaning was that the amount of care you put in something will be the amount that it cares back to you.

Today, we went to the film festival. One of the films is very interesting. The name of the film is La Mariposa. It is about a family who became refugees because of war and the main character, a girl. Wanted to go on the slide in the swimming pool, but her swimming is to bad and she wasn't allowed. She tried and tried and finally she succeeded. The big idea for me is to never give up, just keep following or passion and you will succeed. It is only a matter of time.

negative space:

Don't waste space or he will have OCD. Most OCD guy ever. I love him. Only character I liked out of all the films. It's about packing luggages and dads. And not wasting space or he will have OCD. You always have something to get along with your dad. That's the whole film.

Today, we went to the Roundhouse community centre for the Real 2 Reel Film Festival. A lot of those shorts had a lot of deeper meaning to them than we might have thought. One, in particular, would have to be the short about the boy who stole from the grocery store. I don't know why but this one really struck me. I think that the big idea is not to take things for granted. We ourselves are very privileged. We might not realize it, but poverty is all around us. Sometimes I think to myself "Ugh! I have it so hard." when in reality, I actually live a pretty comfortable life compared to other people like that boy. I mean seriously, his mom died and he couldn't even afford basic necessities like food or new shoes. I think that we need to stop and think more about those less fortunate and appreciate how good our life is. Believe it or not, I could somewhat connect to this. None of you really know this, but my mom is actually homeless and goes through those kinds of struggles. I thought about her while watching the short. So yeah... enough rambling. Sorry if this didn't meet the criteria since I didn't exactly make the big idea clear.

@Nicole- Ermm.. In film, the boy told his friends that his mom died but when he got home his mom was there. He even greeted his mom. Maybe he just wanted to look for food in the trash and not go with his friends...? I don't even know anymore.

While watching La Mariposa, I have to admit it did hurt a bit when the little girl said she hated Canada, but I feel slightly better now that I think I know why she said it. Moving, or trying something new is always scary, especially at a new age. So, I think that having to live in Canada was quite the culture shock, so she took it out on us… Though the film may’ve insulted my country, it did have a pretty good message: Only by working hard can we achieve our goals.

We saw a lot of short films and even made our own. The short film that really caught my attention was the packing one. I think that the big idea behind this is that people get too glued to the things they like doing that that's all they care about. For example the guy in the short film really liked packing that he took it so seriously that when he went to his own dad's funeral he thought about how much space they wasted. He cared about that so much he probably wasn't sad that his dad died but the fact they wasted so much space. Overall, the short films were all really good but some just didn't make sense to me.

Wow, all those films were amazing I really enjoyed them. I got a quick question before I begin speaking. What was you favorite short? Well, mine was La Mariposa. It was a great movie based on the director and it seemed very interesting and it must have been fun to make. I really like that it is based on a true story because it is so realistic. I think it was just great it looked like there was a lot of time and effort put into the film. I really liked the director too she was really nice.

Do you give up when something seems impossible or extremely hard to accomplish? I do that. 7 year old Carol never gave up in the film, ‘La Mariposa’. I think that ‘La Mariposa’ is about to be determine to do something and not give up. That would be something I will need to work on. I always start something but never finish. La Mariposa shows a young girl who immigrated to Canada. She wanted to go to this slide at the swimming pool, but in order for her to do that she must get a smiley face drawn on the top of her arm. She needed to past a swimming test first. When Carol first tried, she failed, but that didn’t stop her. Carol was determined. She never gave up. Even if she could’ve cheat, she wanted to do it herself. Determination is a very important thing. No matter who laughs, mocks, teases you, you must stay determine and show them that you can do it.

We saw a lot of short films today. The one that caught my eye the most was the one called “Glass Pearl” (I think). The reason why it seemed interesting is because it made me realize how fortunate I am. The big idea is clearly showed, the film shows us that even during hard times we can’t really take things for granted. Some of us think that our lives are horrible and everything is hard, but after watching the film I didn’t really know how I felt. It was sort of like sympathy but at the same time also comfort? I’m not exactly sure how to explain it properly... What I’m trying to say, is that we’re more fortunate than how we think we are. Sure, maybe you can’t afford something that you want but the boy and his family couldn’t even afford food, something that he actually needs and not just wants. Hopefully you get what I’m trying to say, because I’m pretty sure this is all over the place. :P

Today we went to the film festival and watched lots of short interesting films. The one that I will be telling you about is La Mariposa. This is about a girl who didn't know how to swim and she really wanted the smiley face on her arm. So she took the test a few times and she finally passed it. I think the big idea of this film is if you try something and you mess up, don't give up. Keep on trying because in the film she really wanted to get the smiley face so she kept trying until she got it.

Negative Space- I think the title of this short has a huge impact on the actual story. It shows how at the end of the story, all the main character really thinks about is all the space going to waste in his father's coffin. This title (Negative Space) plays a huge role in the story, because it shows how the main character's father taught the main character only to care about how much extra space there was in a luggage. It shows how negative the space was, because the dad never cared about his kid, he cared about his luggage. The way the dad acted took impact on his child, making it so that his child didn't care about him either, he only cared if the suitcase was well packed or not.

Today, we went to the Roundhouse Community Center to watch the short films at the R2R film festival. The one film that stood out to me was “If You Fall”. In the story, an eight year old girl named Lila tries to learn how to ride a bike. Her family helped support her and encourage her to bike on without someone holding on to her. However, she turned back to call for her father and she veered into a bush. When she hit the bush, I think her leg was either fractured or broken. Her family comforted her. After her leg healed, she tried biking on her own and succeeded. I thought the big idea in this film was that your family and friends are always there to support you and that it’s okay to take risks and step out of your comfort zone once and awhile. It also reminded me of a six word story that my friend made, “I fell, only to fly higher.” When you are trying to do something and you feel afraid, at least you can draw comfort from the fact that no matter what, your family will support you and encourage you.

La mariposa is a short film about a family that just immigrated to Canada. One day they went to a swimming pool and a girl really wanted to go on the slide but you have to have a smiley face on your shoulder (which proves that you passed the test) in order to go on the slide. So she did the swimming test but the life guard told her she can't she tried again and again but she still couldn't pass it. one day when they got back home she was really mad that she didn't make it. She wanted to tell mom about the not passing the test thing but instead she told her that's she hated Canada which kinda made my heart broken. But then she heard some arguing in her parents room and realized that not only is it her that's facing a problem but her parents were too. But in the end after all the practicing she finally got a smiley face.

I think the big idea is to step out your comfort zone and try your best until you succeed

As I watched the amazingly made films, one stood out to me. One that made me blink back my tears and clap. And yes, you may have guessed it already. Negative Space. In this story, the boy was taught how to pack up his luggage perfectly and tidily by his father. What may this represent you ask? To me, it seems as if the dad goes out for business trips and seems like the perfect CEO. He leaves often, which doesn’t make much time for the father and son bonding unlike everyone else. They used to pack together, but it turns out that his son packed everything up himself once he got the hang of it. And once his father arrives at what seems like a hotel, he only sends a “perfect” text. There wasn’t any sign of affection. Not even a simple I love you or I miss you. And as we saw before, his mother smoked. Which may have led the father to work even harder for the family. I suspect that the boy didn’t get any love from his mother as well. Because the moment he saw his mother, he was still emotionless and they hugged for only a brief amount of time. As he stepped in he got straight to the point and went to see his dad. Even after seeing his dad in the big white clothed case, the only thing he managed to say was “there’s so much wasted space”. He didn’t care about his father, instead the space around it. He paid no attention to the person that gave him life. Instead looking at the things he was taught to do. Practically ordered to do as well. Maybe thinking they would actually bond over luggage was something totally off. Every time a suitcase is filled with no space at all, the further the 2 hearts get. And once one is gone, the other would be fine without it. What’s really filled with no space were their hearts. The father was so busy he pushed his son out. And his son did the same thing back.

Today,we went on a field trip,and we watched some short film. I really like those video because I think they are so deep and I always make connections in it. I also have a favourite one and the title is 'The butterfly' I love it because I think the bid idea was really important to us and I think that I made a lot of connections in it. I think the big idea is to tell us we should always try your best and never give up. In this short film,it was about a girl who just moved to Canada and she didn't know any English. She joined a swimming class and she was not as good as the other child and the coach needed her to practice more but she didn't understand what was he talking about. When she got home, she was really sad and she told her mum that she hate Canada. I think why she hate it was because for her it was a really new place and she didn't understand so it was just hard. But at last, she really tried hard and finally the coach really think she did a great job. I think that sometimes if you just do it for once,it should doesn't went well because you didn't get any practice,so I think we should always try our best and never give up. The connection that I made is that when I first came to Vancouver,I also had a feeling as her,everything was just new for me and I was just scared that I can't communicate with my classmates but I didn't give up and I keep improve my English,and now I think that it was fun studying in Vancouver with all of you guys.

Negative Space - This was a very interesting story, it was a story I've never come across before. It had many deep meanings to it since the main characters dad only just packed. To me the mother didn't seem to have much potential. Smoking in the house isn't safe for her or her family. The dad doesn't seem to give much of his time to his family and only goes on trips for work and everything. The boy didn't seem to have a completed family. It was like something was missing. I think it's love. There were no signs of live other than the dad texting his son "perfect". I wonder what the meaning behind that is... The dad only taught his son how to pack and not waste space. That's honestly it. When the boys dad passed away he even packed his suitcase nice and tidy just like what he learned. He saw his dad and only cared about the space wasted in the coffin. I feel like the main character just kind of pushed his dad away and only thought about the one thing he could think of his dad for. Maybe he's going to forget his father soon because I don't think he had a big role in the boys life. No father and son bond but just packing, and space.

Today we watched multiple short films. There were many that I liked but the one that really caught my attention was La Mariposa. I think the big idea for this short film is keep doing what you want to do, your dream. If you don’t make it the first time keep trying until you reach your goal/dream. This short film is based on a true story. It’s about this family who immigrated from Columbia to Canada as refugees. They had two sons and one daughter. It was hard for them to live here since they couldn’t speak nor understand what people were talking about. So the girl really wanted to go on this water slide, but you have to take a test before you can go on the water slide. She took the test but she couldn’t pass it because she couldn’t swim. It took her many many tries until she passed. When she passed the test she was so happy and her whole family cheered and was very happy for her. Overall, this was my favourite short filming of all the ones I’ve seen today. I found it quite inspiring to always try your best and never give up.

Have you ever been in a place where you have a choice between cheating and not? Well, in the short film called the butterfly, a kid had a chance to cheat her swimming test and just draw herself a smiley face like a lot of the kids, but she didn't and really did the test and got herself a smiley face on her arm. Basically, the big idea is that you shouldn't cheat in anything. Even a silly swim test to get on the slide at a pool. When you cheat, you only hurt yourself.

The butterfly

You've likely been placed in a difficult situation that made you want to cheat on. However, today I'll be talking about a film known as "The butterfly" that made headlines from its authentic story.

The big idea of this story is to overcome your problems and not cheat. When you cheat, you'll always feel the feeling of guilt pass through your body. The main protagonist had a lot of pride in swimming to reach a smiley face, and although she failed, she kept trying and trying. Ultimately, she reached her coal and felt a lot of pride in herself and she was glowing with satisfaction.

Even though the protagonist had to train for several months to reach her goal, her expression meant that it was totally worth it. When you cheat, you don't hurt others, but yourself.

My P.A.R.

The short film that I enjoyed was " La Mariposa" because it reminded me of when I was little and I drew personal connections to it. One of my connections was when she didn't cheat because one time I was doing a test and I didn't understand what to do on that question so I was going to cheat but I didn't. This is related to the book because when the girl saw other girls cheating with the marker she thought she should do the same but in her mind she was like, "No that's not right. If I want to go down the slide I better pass the test." That was really honest of her even though no one was watching. I liked the ending because she finally passed the test and she likes Canada!!!
