Beijing Tourist Map

Today, you started working on your ratio/proportions assignment for the Forbidden City. All of you have clearly improved on your ability to measure and calculate ratios/proportions. You started creating your grids for the maps of Beijing you are making based on the routes taken in 'The Forbidden City'. We are looking forward to seeing all of you applying your math skills on this assignment. Remember, be sure to follow your criteria sheet in order to achieve success.

1.) LA DIV 1:

Prepare for your assessment tomorrow.
The assessment will test your knowledge and ability to use the reading strategies you have covered. (refer to your novel Approach booklets)

LA DIV 2:

Make sure you have all your materials at school tomorrow so you are prepared for your book club. (picture books, picture book packages, etc)

2.) MATH:

Complete your pre-test for math.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose one of the characters from the picture book you are reading and explain in paragraph format how the character develops from the beginning to the end of the story.
For example, explain if the character's mindset changed throughout the story.
Provide evidence for this change and why it happened.
Ask two students from YOUR PICTURE BOOK GROUP about their response.
Answer any questions that your group members asked you.
Edit/revise your original post based on a self-assessment (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, capitals, etc).

Merida is a girl that loves archery. Her dad, king fergus wants her to be a archer but her mother, Queen Elinor doesnt. Merida has been taught archery since she was little. Now she has grown into a teen. Merida is really good at aiming her arrows at the target. One day her mother gets fedup with her archery skills. Queen Elinor storms into her room and Merida has a argument and Elinor gets more frustrated because Merida picks up a sword. But Elinor gets suprized and scared because Merida has the sword on Elinors family sewing prodject that she finished. Merida lifts her sword angrily and brings it down, sending a bolt of anger at her mother. Elinor cant take it anymore. She breaks Merida's bow in half and throws it in the toasty fire beside them. Merida runs out of the room crying from the pain her mother gave her. Elinor realises what she did. She picks a stick of metal up and trys to take the burning bow out of the fire. She knows she cant fix it.

At the beggining of the book Merida is happy, showing her love to her parents. But at the end her love changes towards them. Merida is very angry at her mother for burning her bow and her mother is now angry and worried.
This happened because i didnt explain it but how they got into a argument is Merida was holding a archery event for the other vikings or lords to compeat against eachother but her mother clearly said not to get involved in the event. But she went and got involved in the event which made her mothers happiness disintigrate into ashes
(Making spelling mistakes on purpose) and thats what made them get into a argument.

I WANTED TO DO THIS BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT!

The character I will be talking about is Walter. I'd bee briefly explaining Walter's journey becoming blazing mean to being nice in just a paraghraph.

The book starts off showing Walter. The book describes Walter as a rude person who wants to be in the future because of a TV show he likes. He wishes he was in the future were they had robots driving tiny planes and such, so when he went to bed, his bed gave him a ride to the future. He traveled to many different places, the main thing he noticed Is the future wasn't what he thought. There weren't any robots driving tiny plains, it was just traffic and people cutting down trees and people cleaning up the dump. When he woke up, he was disappointed in himself for what he did and got a tree for his birthday instead of his laser guns and toy spaceships like he had before.

All in all, his adventure through the world was well, interesting. He learned a lot and learned the truth about humanity

In the picture book I'm reading a character whose change stands out to me is Dylan's mom. At the start of the book, Dylan's mom is someone who doesn't notice things. Someone who watched the world flash by in front of her eyes without even blinking. Everything about her seemed like a blur. When Dylan begs and pleads to stop-if only for one moment to listen to the music, his mom quickly drags him down to the escalator. Later at home, Dylan finds the music again, on the radio. He dances, and his mom finally joins him. they enjoy the music together, and Dylan has finally opened his mom's eyes to the world.

Rafael likes to follow instructions without thinking. Therefore, he is really gullible and nice. He listens to everybody. At the end of the book, he still listens to everybody. He didn't learn anything. Good job, Raffle. I can still get you to give me your lunch by saying empty threats. Very smart, Raffle.

Walter is a young boy who is selfish and doesn't care about the environment but changes throughout the book. In the beginning, he littered and didn't even care about picking up his trash and throwing it away. Walter also is lazy because he was too lazy to sort out his trash before he watch TV. Walter wishes he can live in the future because of all the cool things he thinks is in the future. He goes to sleep and ends up having a dream about him being in the future. The future turns out not to be what he expected because in his dream he was taken to many different locations. There was traffic because of the amount of car users, smoke causing him trouble, garbage everywhere and more. Walter realizes the mistake he made and changes to care more for the environment.

This is a great paragraph. Here's some feedback.

In the 3rd and 4th sentences, you wrote "Walter wishes he can live in the future because of all the cool things he thinks is in the future." How does this relate to Walter's personality changes? It would be very helpful if you could explain it in more detail.

My P.A.R.
The character I chose was Rafael. In the beginning of the book it explained how he loved to follow instructions. His goal was to build a go-cart, race it and win. He finished so fast that he decided to check on his classmate but her go-cart wasn't a go-cart. She had made something totally different. Rafael was amazed. That changed is character because at the beginning of the book Rafael just followed instructions but now he thinks outside of the book.

Olemaun. The girl who wanted to read so much she would go through anything for it. Two years passed, she's ten. She knows how to do many things just like how she did before going to the residential school. She sees her mom, but what her mom said to Olemaun was heartbreaking. Her culture slowly drifted away from her part by part, from time to time. She felt that she's a different bird, now drifted away from her first flock. She doesn't even know who she is. But Olemaun proved her dad that she's more then that. On Christmas Day, she wanted a gift, but didn't get it. Her dad gave her something more then what she originally wanted and of course it lightened her life. Her mom was also proud of Olemaun for handling it and said: "__ ____!".

Anddd I forgot this. It changed Olemaun because at first she couldn't do much for her family because she forgot most of her culture, making her feel sad. In the end when her mom says "__ ____!" in the end it made Olemaun proud and happy.

Everyone changes, but did you know that people in picture books can change too? MIND BLOW! WOW! An example of a character changing would be Dylan's mom in the book The man with a violin. Dylan's mom was a person who didn't notice the smaller things in life, like a missing button or even a cat biting on a bone. That all changed when Dylan told her about the music playing on the radio. Once she heard the music she started to notice all the wonderful things in life and she spent that day dancing and playing with Dylan.

Let's start off with a conclusion sentence (like Karman mentioned). It would really help bring your paragraph to a smoother close. Next, I don't believe Dylan SHOWED his mom the music, instead, he turned on the radio and exclaimed that it was the man from the subway, then his mom joined him.

The character that changed in the story the most was Dylan's mom. To start off, Dylan and his mom went out on the subway. At the subway station there was a man with a violin. Dylan wanted to stop but his mom didn't. Dylan was someone who noticed the little things. His mom didn't appreciate music. Dylan's mom wasn't someone who didn't take the time to appreciate the little things in life, like music. She just pulled him away from the sound. Off they went away from the music, and onto the subway with all kinds of unpleasant sounds.They arrived at home, and Dylan put on the radio. He began to dance but his mom didn't... at first. Dylan's mom ended up dancing with him! That taught her to appreciate music, as well as all the small things in life. I infer that if they ever go back there and the man with the violin is there, she will stop to listen.

NOTE: This is kind of rushed and un-edited. It probably doesn't meet the criteria.

I think you did great in this paragraph, but you should go over everything, to check for any grammar mistakes. Another way you can improve, is to explain everything a little bit more. How can you tell that Dylan's mom doesn't like music?

@ Caden - For the first shape question thingy just look at the measurements you have. They are 4 and 6. Divide that and you get 1.5. To find the rest multiply 5, 2 and 3 by 1.5. I hope that makes sense.

In ‘Not my Girl’ Olemaun goes from hopeful and happy to stand-outside-and-hope-I-get-sucked-up-by-the-northern-lights, and back to happy in just 1 book. She’s hopeful when she’s standing on the edge of a boat waiting for her family to welcome her back, but then her mother yells ‘Not my girl!’ as she approaches, and well, things all go south from there. Turns out Olemaun’s changed a lot since the first book, she’s almost completely lost her culture. She can’t eat her favourite foods without being unable to chew, and she can’t even speak her own language fluently! In the end though, the problems resolve, and not only has Olemaun regained her culture, she has regained her happiness, thank gosh.

My story book is Paul and Peter Reynolds’s Going Places. The story is about the importance of being creative. Rafael is an important character in the story. At the beginning ,like his classmates, Rafael follows instructions in doing things. The go cart he makes is like everyone’s because everyone just follows the instructions. No one makes any efforts to be creative. Luckily, Rafael is willing to learn from others. When he sees that Maya is making a very different go cart, he can see the fun of doing something new. He changes his thinking and, together with Maya, he makes a very new and interesting go cart. Rafael’s experience shows me that being creative is fun and rewarding.

Agnes. In the story "Not my girl", Agnes is the main character Olemaun's best friend at the outsider's school. In the beggining you don't really see Agnes, (Maybe she was one of the girls being reunited with their families in the background?) but she probably got off the boat like all the other girls, excited to see her family again, but not realized how hard it would be to go back home. She probably felt lonely and frustrated that she wasn't allowed to play with her best friend anymore, when they could have helped each other. She was forced to reject her friendship. But when Olemaun started to regain her culture and got her own dogsled, Agnes's spirits would have soared. It would have given her hope for herself, and maybe she was able to talk her parents into letting her play with Olemaun again? Things always turn out in the end.

In a story, the characters usually change a lot throughout the storyline. The book that I’m reading is called “Just a Dream”. The main character, Walter in “Just a Dream” starts off as a litterbug who doesn’t care about nature at all. As the story continues, he learns about the importance of taking care of the environment. This is shown when he was shocked to see his street covered in garbage and when he didn’t want to look at the postcards that had a picture of the Grand Canyon on them because it was beautiful in the pictures, but now it is full of smog, so he couldn’t see anything. Later on in the story, Walter realizes that if he doesn’t take care of the environment, it will slowly deteriorate. This is proven when he wishes the duck luck on its way to find a pond. In the end Walter respects nature. This is proven by when he plants a tree on his birthday, and when he picks up his litter. In conclusion, Walter starts off as a lazy litterbug and ends up as a person who really enjoys and appreciates Mother Nature.

My book: Weslandia.
In the book weslandia, a boy named Wesley. He is a pretty smart dude, but he is an outcast. He dislikes things that others would love, and like things that the other's found weird. Everyone including his parents know this. He even knows that he is an outcast. In the beginning of the book, Wesley is considered weird. He was tormented by the other kids and he wasn't very happy himself. His mind clicked and he started creating his own land. At first he was a lonely dude, but in the end he is happy and has friends. (I am sorry if I spoiled some things..)

@Vivian- the whole thing is out of 70 marks, so the first one which I think is 69, it’s 69/70, so 69 divide by 70 and then multiply by 100. Do that for the others too.

The book I’m reading is called”Matchbox Diary.” In the book the man used matchboxes to keep items that will remind him of the past or what he did, what he been through. He didn’t learn how to read and write before, but when he grow up, he became a printer for about 30 years. Working with letters and alphabet. When he was young, his family was really poor, he only gets a olive pit to suck on when he’s hungry. Now so many memories and things happened, the man collected hundreds of matchboxes, and each of them has their own unique memories.

My picture book called ' Going Places ' , and today I am going to talk about Rafael. Actually Rafael is a person that who really like to follow directions . And they had to build a go-cart , and they are going to have a race and see who can win. At first , he followed all the steps and build the go-cart. After he build it , he thinks that it was awesome , and he was so proud of himself. Then , his classmate Maya which lives close to him , he wanted to look how her go-cart look . Then , he saw that she made a different one that is not what it suppose to look like. He felt confused and he telled her that this was not a go-cart. And Maya said it didn't say it have to be a go-cart. After Rafael heard it , he was thinking that ' o , it didn't say it has to be a go-cart' Then , Rafael had an idea ,they can made a go-cart together and win the game. At last they made one that really have a big different with others , and their classmates thought they gonna lose but they actually won the race in the end. I think the different is at first , I guess Rafael is a person that want to do better than others and think that they have to do the same thing with other or it can't be great . But at the end , he realized that when you did something different , it doesn't mean that you are wrong , sometimes it can be better than others or even great.

Olemaun a.k.a Margaret has changed throughout the course of the book. The book kicks off when Margaret excitedly comes home after two long hard years in residential school.Then she hears her own mom say these words "not my girl." HER OWN MOM does not recognize her.Sad.Then she can't speak in her own language t otell her mom that she WAS her daughter. Then she can't eat her own foodm,is rejected by her friend and her dogs,does not get a doll,and nearly kills a puppy. However,she mans up and survived those tough times by reading and finding her inner joys. I guess...... In the end her mom says "My girl!" .

p.s. when Vivian wrote "__ ____!" it was really "My girl!"I know,I spoil books. Now you can't enjoy it MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The book that I’m reading is The Matchbox Diary. There are two main characters in this book, but I’ll be only talking about one of them. So I’ll be talking about the great-grandfather. In the beginning his family was poor and had no education. So one day his family sent a letter to the school master and long after a letter came back with tickets. Those tickets were to America and to go to school. Eventually, his father got a job, his sisters also got a job and he went to school. Everyday when he comes home he teaches his sisters what he learnt at school. Then he got a job, so that pretty much shows that his family got more wealthier and have more education than back when he was in Italy.

I am currently reading Weslandia. There is just one main charachter, Wesely. At first Wesely is just a kid who is very diffrent to people around him. Everyone forces him to be like the person they want them to be but Wesely refuses. He also likes to explore and learn so Wesely decided to conduct and summer project. When his father unconsiously says "Like you would use that knowledge often" his thought sparks. He was going to make his own staple crop farm like how he learned at school. He tries many things and finds a plant that is used in many ways and his past-tormentors became curious. At the end of the summer project, he was still the same person but more people liked him. Overall, Wesely did not really change at all. He did something that changed the people around him.

Rafael is very competitive and is all about wining and following the rules when he knew there was a go cart racing competition. But when he saw what Maya did and say , he made a change and that change was to think outside the box and be creative, slow and steady wins the race, and teamwork makes the dream work.

Thw last picture book I read was Westlandia，but I can't spoil this one so I will choose one a long time ago. I read a picture book called: Whan I was Eihgt. The book talks about an inuit young girl going the outsiders school and getting treated horriblely. She was forced to do labor and they didnt teach her a thing！At first she was scared to do fight back, but she was getting mentally stronger and at last sge stood up against the teacher and the teacher can't stop her anymore. She is now strong.

I am doing Westlandia and the main character is Wesley I will be writing about him. At first he is a bullied different kid to everyone he is weird and he is okay with that. Some people aren't though. Then he turns up some land and he get some plants to sprout. People were interested, they started buying bug repellent and people started to change their mind about him. He started feeling happy not lonely and sad. When he went back to school he had no shortage of friends.

One of the characters in the book is a great grandfather. He is the owner of the matchbox diaries. In the books it tells us his journey from being in Italy to being in America. It goes from sucking on an olive pit to owning a book and antique store. That’s all I can really say so I don’t spoil the book that much. Yea...
