Determining What's Important - a key step in the Novel Approach Reading Strategies.

Today, students started off the day by walking into a classroom full of pumpkins - one for each student - a gift from Mr. Bains, Mr. Hong, and Ms. Naomi. Students will be working with these pumpkins these next few days to create Day of the Dead themed pumpkins - a wonderful fusion of Arts and ADST! Students were then self-regulated as they learned about the reading strategy: determining what is important. Students watched as Mr. Bains modelled his visible thinking to the text, Mother to Son, by Langston Hughes, before doing their own visible thinking of the song, Believe, by Shawn Mendes. This took us to just past recess as the visible thinking is something that cannot be rushed! A math lesson about the rules of divisibility followed along with our read aloud of the novel, One For The Murphys, a fire drill, and inquiry in the library with Ms. Altman. Just like that, the day was finished - what a day it was.

IMPORTANT:
1.) STUDENT GOAL SETTING CONFERENCES: Remind your parents to sign up for a goal-setting conference with you. They were sent the sign up schedule by email last week.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you each received a small pumpkin - a gift from Mr. Bains, Mr. Hong, and Ms. Naomi. Over the next few days, we will be turning your pumpkin into a Day of the Dead (Dia los Muertos) themed pumpkin! Below is a video explaining What is Day of the Dead? National Geographic produced the video - a trustworthy media source. Watch the video (it's just over 2 minutes) and write a paragraph that summarizes what Day of the Dead is.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can learn about Day of the Dead and write a paragraph that summarizes what it is.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Watch this video.
2.) Write a paragraph summarizing what is Day of the Dead? Paragraph Structure (Intro, body, and conclusion).
3.) Check your work for the givens/conventions or writing (spelling, capitals, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation).
4.) Give one student who hasn't received any descriptive feedback, one or two things to improve on based on the above criteria.
5.) Edit/revise your original paragraph based on the peer-feedback.
6.) Check to make sure you posted your paragraph, posted your peer-feedback, and posted your revised version all on the same stream. Do not start a new stream. Just reply to your original paragraph. Keep your work organized!

What is the day of the dead? Let me explain, this happens all over Latin America and Mexico and it happens on November 2nd. It's a celebration to honour the people in your life that have died. You often celebrate with food they liked and offenders, which are small altars that honour a person. During the holiday, lots of skulls are used as decorations. There are many global holidays, and even more that only some regions celebrate. In Mexico, they celebrate the Day of the Dead. Day of the Dead celebrates the lives of dead relatives and loved ones. There are food, drinks, and lots of music. Ofrendas are small altars made for a single person, normally by family and/or friends. Overall the Day of the Dead is a fun way to get together and remember family.

Have you ever heard of the day called Day of the dead? Well this day was establish in Latin America and Mexico and the day of the dead is celebrated on every November 2nd. Family's and friend's all come out on the streets and celebrate! Skeleton's and skull's are the main decoration to use on the day. People celebrate this day by remembering there ancestors, dancing, placing there favorite kind of food for the ancestors to enjoy. One connection I made was when I read this book called Ghost, the book also talked about the Day of the dead in the story.

Dia los Muertos, otherwise known as the day of the dead is a tradition in Mexico to honor and celebrate the dead and it is officially on November 2th. People celebrate with food that the dead people enjoyed and families decorate the graves with fancy stuff. It is believed that the dead awakens on that day and spend times with their families.

Sometime one hears reference to “the days of the Dead” which refers to the Days of October 31 – November 2. October 31 is Halloween or All Hallows eve. November 1 is “el Dia de los innnocentes” or the day of the children and All Saints Day. November second is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead.

Have you ever celebrated a deceased on? Have you ever seen many skulls in one place? The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a tradition to celebrate and honor the dead family members on November 2nd for two days straight. Though, you may also know The Day of the Dead from Coco (a Disney animated movie that is based off this tradition). Some things they do on this tradition is making skulls as orfendas beside with food they had like, photos and decorated graves of their loved ones. This celebration has been taken thousands of years ago in Mexico as people believe that they wake up those days. In short, the Day of the Dead is a great time to remember and celebrate the ancestors that have died and show some respect to them.

Just in case anyone gets mixed up, Día De Los Muertos is the correct way of saying it in Spanish. Día Los Muertos also works but because I used to take Spanish and know a lot about this subject, I thought would right it the way I know it.

Day of the Dead! A Mexican Holiday tradition celebrated on November 2nd every year. Originally took place in Mexico, but the tradition is also celebrated in Latin America as well! To celebrate this day, they honour their dead relatives and loved ones. Usually by feasting on a variety of foods and drinks that the relative liked, and also lots of music and dancing included. The families clean and decorate graveyards. Families would also keep a photo in an alter of their loved ones to always remember and honour them, which would be an Ofrendas. They do this to celebrate with their loved ones which is a belief to them that the dead will awaken on that very day.

Spooky Scary Skeletons! Day of the dead is a Mexican holiday, were civilians honor the dead buy calibrating their lives, here are some ways they honor their people: decorate and clean their graves, honor pictures of them with food. Mexicans also have costumes for that day! one of them being the skeletal costume, it's to represent the dead. So Day Of The Dead is Mexico's opposite version of Halloween, if you did not know, Halloween is used to blend in with spirits, thinking that spirits would influence you so you dress up as one so they don't influence you in any way, while Day Of The Dead is to honor those dead spirits! Overall Day Of The Dead is Mexico's way to honor the dead!

November 2nd, Mexico. On this day, the people of Mexico celebrate Día de los Muertos. Just like Christmas or Thanksgiving, the Day of the Dead is a holiday. They believe that on this day, the dead wake from their eternal sleep. The people always cook lots of food and have lots of music, but they also clean and decorate the graves of their deceased. They have Ofrendas as a way to remember their loved ones at home. One of the symbols of Día de los Muertos is the Calacas and Calaveras, or skeletons and skulls. Dia De Los Muertos The day of the dead is on November 2nd. It is a Mexican celebration where they welcome back souls of their deceased relatives. When i was watching the video it kind of reminded me of the movie Coco because it is also related to the celebration of the dead. The celebration has food, drinks and lots of dancing. They also do things that the deceased enjoyed so their souls will be happy. i love this celebration and one day i wish i can go and actually be part of Dia de Dos Muertos and celebrate.

There are celebrations, feasts, festivals, and skulls. No I'm not talking about Halloween. I'm talking about Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos). It is a Mexican tradition where you honour and grief the deceased. They celebrate with big gatherings of friends and families, have big feasts. They clean and decorate the grave's of their loved ones who have passed away. They decorate them with ofrendas which are small personal altars. It's also a day where the spirits wake up and celebrate with each other. They make skulls and skeletons because they are the symbols of Day of the Dead. Many of you probably read the book "Ghosts" or saw the movie "COCO" right? They're both based on the Day of the Dead! It looks very festive and lively! I find Day of the Dead a unique way of celebrating.

Dia De Los Muertos also known as Day Of The Dead. Although it was created in Mexico, many people throughout Latin America celebrate this holiday too. You may be thinking day of the dead that’s a little creepy, but really it is a day to honour and remember people that have passed away. They believe that if you make an ofrenda, which is decorating with food, flowers skeletons or skulls by their grave, the dead will come to life and celebrate with their families again.
