Today, we started our REEL 2 REEL film festival for kids. The short films we watched contained content relevant to you and hopefully you were able to make some deep connections about how they connect to you and the world around us. Your only assignment today is to post your big ideas for the following films. We continued working through our novel approach work and ended the day with PE outside.

LEARNING INTENTION: I can come up with the big idea by using the reading strategies.

2.) Provide evidence to support your big idea by using reading strategies and explain how they helped you come up with a big idea.

The Witch and the Baby:

The big idea for 'The Witch and the Baby' is to remind us that being happy is most important. For instance, when the witch was jealous of other appearances and tried to sacrifice a child to be like them. I can infer this when the witch looked at the girls continuously and then at herself. She was greedy and would do anything to get what she wanted by her actions, though, that comes to an end when the royal's child embraces the witch. It's almost like a life for a life, seeing the child be so happy for it to be alive brought the witch to return the feeling and leave the royals alone.

I am Gay:

Personally, the big idea for the short film 'I am gay' sends the message that personalities outway your preferences. Like the man's mom, she didn't want him to be gay nor understand what went through his mind, but she loves him still. Just because she wasn't positive didn't mean that she'd kick him out. What she talks to isn't just gay, she's talking to her own son and his sexuality's does not change him as a person. Even when his own siblings were a bit indifferent from him, they understood that he was still the same person. I connect to this like racism, "I don't want to talk to a gay person" is the equivalent of "I don't want to talk to a asian person". You're judging someone from a sexuality or skin colour, not their personality.

Mutts:

In my opinion, is trying to convey people the big idea of being to help others when in need. It seems to me that the mammals are starving every day with a toxic atmosphere in the care place. I infer that their also probably a bit scared or traumatized from what they seen, they didn't get to live the normal happiness and care others did. Their risen to fight for what they want, not everything was given to them. They need others to survive, whether that be each other or strangers leftovers and anything can help save their lives.

Daughter Father:

I think the big idea for 'Daughter Father' is to embrace each other and spend time together because family is not forever. We aren't immortals and moments fly by to when they start their own journey without you, so we need to make sure that we use that time left wisely. I infer that even sometimes you learn from them instead; the happiness they bring you is no match. So if you had wasted it, you would only be able to listen and watch the old evidence of existence they left.

1. The Witch and DaBaby - I used inferencing based on all the things that happened in the film. The witch wants to steal and cook a baby for a potion, but when she meets he baby she becomes attached to it. This one was easy because it actually had a story.

2. I am Gay - I inferred that the cousins aren't homophobic at all, based on their indifferent reactions. I inferred that the mother is a bit homophobic, based on her not-so-indifferent reaction. However, it's pretty much because she was brought up that way, and she will probably become more accepting.

3. Mutts - Many, many dogs are kept in a pound and treated terribly. They have to rush for food, and fight with each other with minimal human intervention. I inferred that they don't get much food because they're really skinny.

1. The Witch and the Baby:
I think the big idea for this story is sometimes you just need a little kindness to open up your heart. I think this because I inferred that the witch was all alone, but when she finally had some baby to be with her, and tell her to be kind, it made her nice. This reminded me of Maleficent, because in the movie, she was an evil queen, but over time she became her Mother, and they lived happily together.

2. I Am Gay
I think the big idea for this is that it's okay to be who you are. In, the story, I'm inferring that his siblings accepted him for who he was because their reactions seemed nice, and they supported him. It reminded me of a TV show I watched called Modern Family because in that, there is a gay man, who was really self conscious about himself, but eventually came out, and felt better about himself, like a weight was lifted off of him. Just like in this film.

3.Mutts
The big idea of this film is that the world isn't a great place. There's lots of poverty, and lots of starvation. The dogs living conditions made me realize that they're quite similar to a lot of people. In Africa, they live in starvation, and they barely get enough food, and their lifestyle quality isn't great.

4. Daughter Father
The big idea of this film is that family comes first. I'm inferring that the daughter and father spend a lot of time together, and they are happy together, because the film showed them doing things like skating together, and they looked really happy, and it seemed like they had lots of memories. So therefore, family comes first.

The Witch and The Baby

BIG IDEA: Affections can help someone feel love, no matter how coldhearted they are.

Why I thought of this: The witch only cared about herself in the start, trying to become prettier. However, when she ran into the baby, she started to grow affection for the baby. When they were going to part, the witch felt sad that the baby and her had to separate. However, when she was offered the babysitting job, you can tell that she eagerly accepted it because she loved the baby.

I am Gay

BIG IDEA: Coming out as gay can be hard to inform to others such as your family, but then you realize that they still love you and will always love you for who you are.

Why I thought of this: There are many people who come out as gay, and it is tough for each one of them to tell their families. Most of them are supportive, but some may be not. However, they’ll still love you no matter who you are.

Mutts

BIG IDEA: Some have lost everything, and this includes dogs.

Why I thought of this: The ‘refugee’ dogs are living in a pound and being treated like prisoners. No longer in their homes, this is the only place that they can survive in. The dogs only have survival now, they have nothing else.

Daughter Father

BIG IDEA: Family is very important and the memories of the time that you spent with your family are priceless.

The daughter and father seemed to have spent a lot of time together and shared a lot of precious memories. I’m sure that most people have spent a lot of time with their families and had a good time. You should always respect your family and stay in touch with them.

I think the big idea is that it does not matter what you look like on the outside, what matters is the beauty found inside your heart. Your heart should represent who you are. With this in mind, no one should be ashamed of who they are just because they look different, we should learn to accept ourselves.

2. I am Gay
The big idea is that your sexuality is not a choice, it is who you are and no one say differently. Those who discriminate are wrong. Being you is the best you there. Everyone should always stay true to themselves as others may not accept this fact but that should not sway your thoughts or make you think you're undeserving of love.

3. Mutts
The big idea is to open your eyes and look at the problem face to face. We have to realize that cute and fluffy puppies aren't always the picture, we have to look deeper and see that many animals, specifically dogs are suffering. They are starving and have to face many obstacles of danger when they live on the streets. As man's best friend, we also have to pay close attention to their needs, even if it may feel like a chore, we benefit through their love and how they stay by our side all the time without a fee or such.

4. Daughter Father
The big idea tells that a family is something that keeps us safe, it is a journey and it is our home. Many memories may pass and go, but at the end, they're always there for us. Sometimes, along the journey, we may make mistakes and it's alright because family is there to support you.

The Witch and the Baby:

I think the big idea is of this film is that people can change overtime with a different environment or with different people. For example, the witch was so focussed on wanting to look like other people, that she was willing to steal someone else’s baby and use it as one of the ingredients in the potion/pot. However, the witch ended up having a strong bond with the baby and realized how much the baby meant to her. And there was a scene where you could see the witch’s heart beating really fast. At the end of the film, the witch got a job (probably as the babysitter) and was able to change and become a better version of themselves through affection.

I Am Gay:

I think the big idea of this film is communication through secrets or things that need to be shared, is a big part of connecting with your family. The film expresses his mother and sibling’s reactions on camera after coming out to them as homosexual. His siblings were supportive and cool with it, and his mother definitely has a few objections however the part that matters the most is that she accepts and loves her son for the way he is. Overall, I think that this is something that should be shared to his family and its apart of communication and creating a stronger bond by getting to know more about one another. This film also teaches to accept others for who they are.

Mutts:

To me, my interpretation of the big idea of this film is that these dogs are a representation of humans. Desperate for food, living a caged life, and fighting for survival. In addition, it’s important to understand that dogs deserve to be treated fairly and with respect just as humans do, which also demonstrates poverty and starvation around the world and what’s happening currently.

Daughter Father:

A film that expresses a true family bond between the daughter and the father. This film definitely demonstrated how important family truly is and why it’s important to spend time with them while you still can. This is shown to us with clips of them hanging out and having a great time together, sending us a message of true connection. And with this information, I can infer that the film is saying; family comes first, and happiness can be found within spending more time together.

The Witch And The Baby

BIG IDEA: Do not judge people on the outside
As the witch found out that capturing a baby and adding it into her pot of magic potion will magically make her more pretty. At first, when she secretly snuck into the castle where the baby was she was careless and greedy. However, as the witch tried to keep the baby from getting in trouble she felt like as the baby was her own child. As the witch returned the baby to its home, she felt like as she was leaving own child away.

I am Gay

BIG IDEA: To accept people no matter what there beliefs are.
As the boy tried to share his feelings to his family that he is Gay, his loved siblings supported him with helpful comments. However, when he started talking with his mom, she was unexpected. When she heard that his son was Gay, she was kind of shocked I think. Though, she told her son that no matter what his perspective about being gay, she still told him that she will always love him.

BIG IDEA: Way over populated.
As we saw in the video, there were so many dogs living in such a a small and remotes hut. When the camera showed how the dogs were able to live by eating some kind of seed everyday, it made me realize that some people in the world are not the only ones starving.

BIG IDEA: Treasure the moment with our family.
All over the world, there are plenty of kids who have no parents or family. In this shot film, it shares how a little girl plays with his dad happily. Even though that we would think that having a family is a basic and normal thing, a lot of kids out there may have never seen his/her family in years.

The witch and the baby
I think the big idea of this film is that people can change. I've reached to this conclusion because I inferred the witch was trying to sacrifice the baby to regain youth at first, but became fond of the baby, and decided to live with the baby after all.

I think the big idea of this film is sharing secrets with your family could deepen relationships. I thought of this because the person who shared that he is gay with his family said he feels his family became more closer to him.

Mutts
I think the person who took this film wanted to say humans are the same as the dogs in the film. This person used a metaphor to emphasize this point, and the dogs in the film was starving for hunger and all fought to reach food. This reminds me of world hunger and poverty.

Daughter and father
I think the big idea of this film is to cherish time with your family. The scene of the daughter and father spending their time together gave me an idea of this big idea.

The Witch and the Baby

B.I. - all people can change

In the beginning of the story, the witch is trying to fry the baby alive. by the end of it she has become a baby sitter and has grown rather attached to the baby

I am gay

B.I. - I think he big idea of this book is that everyone deserves to be excepted, no matter on what they belief in, look like, or identify as.

I think this because int he story he mentions how he just wanted to be accepted and how he knows he deserves that. I think if I were to tell such heavy info to anyone, I would hope they would support me.

I think the big idea of the story is that all humans deserve to be treated the same. the narrator talks about how the refugees from are being tried like animals, or like dogs in a dog pen. they are practically being treated like diseased prisoners and such behaviour is not acceptable.

B.I. - I think the big idea of this film is to cherish your family

Your family will do almost anything for you, if you fall they will pick you up. They are one of few people Thea you will have by your side till they die. You spend a lot of time with them through good and bad and they will have your back.

1.) The Witch and The Baby
I think the big idea probably has something to do with trust because you have to trust someone to take care of your kid. I think that the baby is not the witch's child because if it was, the title would probably be The Witch and Her Child.

2.) I Am Gay
I think the big idea is to be yourself because gay people are usually made fun of, and because it was the first thing I thought of when I read the title.

3.) Mutts
I'm not sure what the big idea could be because the title is just one word. But I do know that a mutt is a dog and that some dogs are abandoned and some dogs live with its owner. So, the big idea could have something to do with friendship or equality.

4.) Daughter and Father
I am 96% sure that the big idea for this film has something to do with family relationships because of the title.

The witch and the baby:
For this one, I had multiple big ideas. Firstly, I thought of responsibility. The witch expected it to be just a quick toss of the baby into the potion, but it was a lot harder. Another point, was how people can love you no matter how you look. The witch seemed to have problems with her image, but when the baby meets her she loves her and realized that's all she needed.

I am gay:
This is a story of acceptance. Some were, but other people may struggle to understand. Although his mother was known as homophobic, I think it was nice to hear that her love would not change.

Mutts:
This film can be viewed in different ways. For example how many stray dogs there are around the world who need help, but I do think the dogs could have represented humans and how many people are struggling in poverty. This is shown with clips with the lives of stray dogs.

Daughter and Father:
It is important to appreciate your family and your quality time with them. Some people might be alone with no family close with them. So with the videos of the father and daughter it can remind us to spend as much time with family as you can.

The short film we watched can be viewed in many different ways. Such as the many dogs around the world or in the film represent humans and how many of them are in poverty and need help.

I am gay (the film)
It’s a short film or interview about acceptance. Some parts were but other people struggle to understand that e person is attracted to the same gender and not the opposite gender. But his mother was homophobic.

Daughter and father.
It’s important to appreciate family and the quality time with them, sometimes people might be alone, until they find a family to be with. I think. The video of the father and daughter reminds some people to spend as much time with your family and family members as you can. I think

~The Witch and The Baby~

-Big Idea-
Appearance isn't all. You can be loved by someone no matter how you look. I think this because the witch sees a picture of a model. She becomes jealous of the pictures, and finds a spell to make herself look similar. The spell requires a baby. So she finds one. But as she spends more and more time with the baby, she realizes that she doesn't want to sacrifice it to make herself look better. She sees that the baby doesn't care what she looks like, and loves her as she would love someone who was more... attractive.

~I Am Gay~

-Big Idea-

Family should always be accepting towards one another (With exception of harming others...). I think this because although his mom does not think that being homosexual is okay, she still loves her son, who is gay, the same as she did before. She loves him. Nothing can change that.

~Mutts~

-Big Idea-
People (and dogs) need our help. We saw how those dogs were living. Near the end, we were told that many human refugees also lived in these conditions. It was chaos when it was food and water time for the dogs. They all crowded through the door and they were all climbing over each other and pushing to get through.

~Father/Daughter~

-Big Idea-
Family should be number one. You should spend as much time as you can with your family members. In the film, they describe the relationship of a father and his daughter. They have fun together. When one of them is confused, or gets hurt, the other is there for them.

The Witch and The Baby
I think the big idea of the story is that sometimes the most unexpected things can change your life. Like when the witch unexpectedly grew attached to the baby. This applies to everyday life, from tripping and finding a penny to winning the lottery, unexpected things happen all the time.

I Am Gay (A short film)
I think the big idea is telling the world who you truly are. If you keep it to yourself and not tell anyone, you won't feel like yourself, because that's not who you are. You have to find the courage to tell the world who you truly are, and if you do, you'll be free. Sure, you might get some weird looks from people, but who cares? You are who you want to be.

Mutts
I think the big idea is about refugees. I think its about the Mexico-USA border crossing. Mexicans are crossing into the US for a better life and to look for opportunities for their children.

Daughter/Father
I think the big idea is that stop motion is an art form. The animation of the child/daughter is form of animation. Also, almost the whole video is stop motion wise. The father is remembering the daughter when she was young.

The Witch and The Baby
The only thing that can make you happy isn't being pretty or having money, its being kind and helping the world, one kind act at a time. I think this is the big idea because at the beginning, she was planning to sacrifice a baby to make herself look better. Though when she had fun with the baby and got attached to the baby, it made her realize that the only thing that will really make her happy is being kind.

I am gay
It does not matter what there people think f you, just be yourself! Accept people for who they are. I think this is the big idea because the boy decided to tell his parents, prepared to here what they would have to say. He was honest and told them how he felt. The siblings accepted him as there loved brother even if he was gay or not. They didn't let bother their sibling relationship. The boy didn't care what the mother would say, he was prepared for the worst.

I think the big idea is to remind us how grateful we are that we live in a country with fresh water, air and a home to live in to sleep and eat in. I think this because it shows the dog laying in the sun all day, having nothing to do, no love or affection. They feel as if they are in prison. This was made (in my opinion) to show us how lucky we are to have what we already have and to not take advantage of our current life.

Love you family. I think this because the story shows the father and daughter holding hands and shows there being happiness when they are together.

1. the witch and the baby

looks and appearances are not what you should think about, but who they really are as a person, the witch wanted to look as good as the model in the picture she looked at, but soon felt connected the baby she kidnaped when she pretended to portray as a babysitter and stole the baby. everyone should be accepted no matter what they look or dream of becoming.

2. I am gay

accept everyone and don't tell anyone to be this type of person that you want them to be, but accept them even if they are charting their own path and want to have free will to do whatever they feel like doing.

3. mutts

we need to help others, in the film about 750 dogs are crowded inside a small pen or technically a prison with poor living conditions and they had to push their way to get food, water, and to get inside the shelter area. human are also suffering like the dogs and we need to understand that we should try to give them better living conditions in refugee camps.

4. Father/daughter

family is what everyone needs and everyone should treasure they ones they have, in the film the father and his daughter are having fun and they help each other out when one is confused or needs help, the other is there to help and support them.

Instead of wrrying about looks, worry about having fun and having a good time because you should value happiness way more than appearances.

You should accept your sexuality. Whether you are gay, lesbian, bi, straight, or any other type of sexuality, you should accept who you are.

Mutts:
These places are where abandoned dogs were left. This is the type of enviorment they live in and it's just like humans. Refugees. Who live in these types of places, starving for food, and fighting amongst each other.

Daughter/Father:
A peaceful life of a daughter, and a father. Playing music and remembering memories of when they daughter was still a baby and when she grew up into a lady.

in my opinion, is making an attempt to deliver human beings the massive concept of being to assist others whilst in want. It appears to me that the mammals are ravenous each day with a poisonous ecosystem with in side the care place.

The Witch and the Baby

I think that the big idea of this story is that people can change no matter their background or their current status. These changes often come in unexpected ways, and this is evident in the film "The With and the Baby". The witch wanted to sacrifice the baby for her own good, but soon realizes how nice having a companion was and became attached to it. The baby made her a more compassionate and considerate person, ultimately changing her entire personality and making her a decent human being.

I Am Gay

The big idea of this film is that family needs to accept each other and spend time together. I think that the interactions between the family members were very awkward already before he even reveals that he was gay. The mother was telling him it's a bad choice and told him what would be best for him in her opinion. I believe that she is trying to help him but his own preferences don't agree with it. Though she doesn't like him being gay, she still loves him and I think that family is more important at the end no matter what each person chooses to do.

I think that the big idea of this story is about refugees and the living conditions of other people. Many people in this world aren't as fortunate as us, and this films shows us this through a lot of dogs living in a literal prison. Dogs can live incredible lives in houses and have no care about surviving on their own. Humans are the same. We can live in houses and get everything we need within seconds, but less fortunate people don't have this and we need to recognize this and be grateful.

Father / Daughter

I think that the big idea of this story is that family is the most important in our lives. Whenever we need help or assistance, our family will always be there to support us. I think that this film shows the amazing relationship between the father and daughter as they think about all the memories they have together.

The Witch and the Baby: I think the big idea is that people can change, like how the witch was about to sacrifice the baby but then she got attached to it and didn’t want to sacrifice it anymore.

i am gay: I think the big idea is that you should accept people for who they are and that being gay isn’t a bad thing.

mutts: I think the big idea is that the dogs represent refugees and their poor living conditions, and that we should be grateful that we live in good conditions.

Father Daughter: I think the big idea is that family is important and they will be there for us when we need it.

I think that the big idea of the story is that your feelings can chanbe by anyone. For example, when the baby hugged the witch, the witch's feelings changed. When the baby's parents returned, the witch looked sad. I also made a connection that in books, these things also happen.

2.)I am gay
I think the big idea is that everybody is different but everybody is equal. Even though you are different from others, you should not treat them poorly.

3.)Mutts
I think the big idea is that refugees are like dogs and they are treated poorly. Even thogh the species are different, refugees get treated like stray dogs.

The Witch and the Baby:
Big Idea: People can change and be the opposite of what you thought they are. For example the Witch originally is described as a dark and ugly figure who wants to kill children to look pretty. However she changed and didnt want to kill the princess and instead decided to only babysit the child.

I am Gay:
The big idea for this is that you should be open to the cloest people around you. The people around you are the people most closest and respects you the most. In I am Gay, the main character/ person never told his own family his sexaulity but overtime he did tell them. Although some of his family arn't so use to it, his family strrill accepted him as who he is.

Mutts:
With war in many countries we are left with a lot of Refugees. These refugees arn't always treated the best. Those fortunate enough to be in developed countries are just the minority of the refugees. A lot of the refugess who went to neighborhood countries arn't always treated the best. They are more in fact treated like dogs.

Father/Daughter
Family is really important in our lives. People are might not always be so greateful that they have family. Family are one of the people thats most closest to you. You can always rely on your family.
