Reconciliation

Today, we watched a documentary about residential schools. More specifically, St. Anne's Indian Residential school in Ontario. Students learned about the horrific atrocities that happened at the residential schools. It is important to learn about these things so we can help in reconciliation process. It is important that we honour those children who were sent to the residential schools and especially those who never made it out. We must learn about what really happened and must help reconciliation.

Today, we all watched a documentary about what happened at St. Anne's Indian Residential school. Although we will never fully understand what these children went through and experienced, we know how horrific it was.
Please write a paragraph about the role you and all other Canadians must play in reconciliation. Remember, reconciliation is about improving the our relationship with the indigenous community.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can express my true feelings as to the role we all have in the reconciliation process.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:

Residential schools are part of possibly the darkest, most evil chapter in Canada's history. Though all schools have since closed, they are far from gone. Their legacy and many of their victims live on, with harrowing stories of abuse and torture. The government is working with Indigenous communities toward reconciliation, but some government officials, as we learned in the film we watched today, have not been so warm toward it. I think, as Canadians, we all have a responsibility to never let something like a residential school exist again. However, my generation also had nothing to do with this, so I don't feel a large responsibility to make a big change. It's not that I think my generation shouldn't try to make change, just that we (at least I) aren't obliged to.

“ In its broadest sense, 'reconciliation' means 'coming together. The dictionary defines 'reconciliation' as a situation in which two people, or groups of people, become friendly again after they have argued. ”. The reconciliation process is important for all Canadians because it's about the basics of how we treat each other as Humans and the kind of relationships and communities we want to build for the future. We as Canadians should help the indigenous community in many ways, for example, we can listen to their stories and support them as they go through the rough roads ahead. Being reminded of the horrible things that happened in those terrible schools is a tragic thing and we should all pay our respects to the lives lost at those mass burials.

Although Canada is a great country, it's past isn't. This includes residential schools. Although these schools are long gone, the memories aren't. Indigenous families have been treated cruelly. I think, that as because we live in Canada, we have a right to know about what went on, despite the fact that my generation had nothing to do with it. Reconciliation is important, if we want to make amends. To do so, I think acknowledging, and supporting the Indegineous people will help with that. In essence, residential schools were a dark part of our past, and although my generation didn't take part in any of this, we still have an obligation to support and reconcile for the First Nations.

Canada’s history is not something that we can ever be proud of. In fact, during this time, many people suffered losses and had to sacrifice many things. One of these things include the dark chapter of residential schools. This is where indigenou people were sent to learn about Canada’s society and how to speak their language. Though the government’s hidden intent was for the indigenous people to forget all of their culture so that it would be easier for the Canadians to take the area. Although this was the hidden intent, the worst of all was yet to come, many children that weresent to these schools were punished through abuse, verbally, physically, and sexually. Thousands of children died in these schools, only those who escaped survived. Moreover, although this chapter has ended, it is still unforgettable and unforgivable. It is a wonder how society has been forgiven after everything that we have done to them. Therefore, to take responsibility, we should own up to our dark history and start making changes through our kind actions allowing the indigenous community to feel as though they are welcomed again, and we should make an attempt to reconcile with them. A way we can do this is to begin with stopping discrimination against them. Although it is a hard task and would seem impossible throughout the results we have achieved over the years, we need to come to realise that in the end, we are all the same. Despite our skin colour, our personalities, our appearances, etc being different, we are all equal and deserve to be treated as though we are. Secondly, we could also help the community by addressing our apologies and supporting them when they need help. This may not only include through sharing the economy, but to help emotionally connect no help them get through roadblocks. In summary, as Canadians we should be ashamed of our history, but we should also be proud to know that we can make an effort in making things better

Today, we watched a video about the residential school in the 1902-1976. The children forced to go there and they had to follow so many strict rules. I will never forget the children who died by the torture in the residential school. When we were watching the video. I saw that the children had to sit on the homemade electric chair even they just want to talk with their mother. What a cruel rule is that! When I saw the picture they took, almost everyone is with a sadly face. Some children were even smiling and I think they were forced to do it. The people who walk out from normal school is called graduate students. The people who walk out from residential school is called SURVIVORS. That’s the difference between them. Residential schools were so scary. I’m so happy that it’s already burned by the fire. These are my thinking. Thanks for reading!

Today, we watched a movie about Residential school's from 1902-1976. The children forced there had to face UNHOLY nun's and other strict rules and people there. I will never ever forget the horrors of it, Kids were abused, assaulted, sexually abused, tormented, tortured, beat to the death, beated, mysteriously disappeared, and more? Anyways, The children all had been tormented in all different ways, Like a kid or kids had to sit in the electric chair to talk to their mother. Like the question someone said during the movie, Why are some smiling? They were forced, I can't imagine if the ones that weren't smiling or crying weren't punished. The people who graduated, are called graduate students I think, BUT kids who graduated the residential school were called survivors. The parts I didn't really hear cuz I didn't want to hear about it was the sexual abuse, and The basement because I don't like them (they scary) Anyway, I hope they get what they deserved and that's a ticket to heck. Although some may say that its not a big deal, however, its just because that they never experienced such a dreadful time. As we saw in the video, thousands of Indigenous children where forced to attend these residential schools throughout Canada. Even though there parents may think think that its okay for there child to attend these schools, however, only 1 our of 25 children survives each year at the schools and many parents thought that there kids just moved on. As we all know, many of the Indigenous Elders have been sufferings from all the memories when they attended the schools. A way to help these Elders can be simply talking to them or chatting with them and trying to make them forget all the tragic that happened. Another way that might help them is to celebrate Orange Shirt Day, that can tell the Elders that we are all together fighting these memories. in conclusion, All country's have good and bad things throughout there history, as long as we now that we did something wrong, we should all change and help each other improve.

Racism. It fuels many things. Slavery, residential schools and the Chinese head tax are all examples this. People thought that they were better so they did these things. In Canada, one of the darkest points in our history was forcing Indigenous children into residential schools. It is an action that our country now regrets, and feels very bad about. We must reconcile. One thing that we can do to reconcile would be to learn about what happened during the time that these schools were open. We would then be able to better understand why these places were traumatic. We will hopefully never understand what happened fully. That would require us to experience it ourselves, and I don't think that the Indigenous peoples would wish it their experience on anyone. We would be able to empathize on a new level. Another way to reconcile would be to stand up to people who tell others that these recounts of experiences are merely "stories." When we stand up we show Indigenous peoples that we will not stand for others dismissing their history as stories. It shows that we care. As we all should. The Holocaust, Japanese internment, and the Komogata Maru incident. All fueled by one ting. Racism.

Reconciliation is about the restoration of friendly relations and coming together, when two disagreeing sides come together as one and reunite. With this in mind, residential schools are one of the darkest moments of Canadian history and something that the country will never forget. After watching a video on this subject with both divisions, I’d say I learned more about what happened in residential schools and the horrific stories told by the survivors. The things that the children and survivors had to endure in these schools are almost unforgivable and Canada as a country, owe the Indigenous community an apology, and to try our best to help them as much as we can to continue with this reconciliation process. Furthermore, I’ve come up with a few suggestions that could possibly be useful for helping the Indigenous community. First, educating yourself on this topic and understanding the history can help Indigenous people because you’re acknowledging their struggles and everything they’ve had to go through. Just like the video our class saw today, people could do research about residential schools/Indigenous people to deepen their understanding of this topic. Secondly, after doing research and educating yourself (with reliable sources) I think that spreading awareness and teaching others about this topic is important, as well as sharing these stories to new generations so that more people are aware.

Canada's history has many bright points in it, but there are also dark parts of Canadian history. Residential schools are a big part of Canadian history and they aren't a good part. The residential schools were ruthless prison like places to assimilate indigenous peoples. In those schools, child were faced with many difficulties such as abuse and assault. These acts were inhumane which is why the government and Canada as a country needs to reconciliate with indigenous people. To help with that, we can give them benefits, give them a proper apology, and also give them some money. These are all ways to apologize and make up for what Canada has done.

Not everyone is proud about our country’s history, neither even know about it. There’s Germany, Canada, America, and many more. Focusing on our country now and recovering is what we do now, and not going back their. Move on. Today in school, we watched a 1 hour movie on residential school survivors and residential schools. We need to restore our country from its past, and fill in the hole dug deep in our country. This of course would be hard and maybe even close to impossible, it I believe that we would one day, end it all. War replaced with piece and violence replaced with love. It might not happen now, but taking it one step at a time, I think we can do it!

Every country has a very dark history in the past. One of the darkest Canadian history is the residential schools. People thought they were right, so people forced indigenous children to go to residential schools and "learn". But it wasn't the schools we now go to. It was like jail. Children were abused in many ways, and some died because of that. Only 1 in 25 children in residential schools survived. These survivors experienced many bad things, so they might not trust people. That is why we need to play in reconciliation. I think we have to learn from this, and don't let the same kind of things happen again. I think we also have to help them mentally because of the things they did to them. Overall, residential schools are a dark part of our country, and it should never happen again.

Reconciliation is restoring your relationship with someone after something bad happened. Canada is working to reconcile with the indigenous peoples after the residential schools. I think that restoring the indigenous culture and helping them recover from the horrifying experiences from the residential schools will help the reconciliation process. During the residential schools, most of the indigenous people forgot how to speak their language. So, it would be nice to learn the language from the remaining people who know it and teach it to others with their help. Helping the people recover is going to be difficult since the memory will always be remembered. But we should at least try. Overall, we should try our best to carry out the reconciliation process with the indigenous especially after the residential schools.

Every country has a dark history, and Canada's residential schools are one of them. In residential schools, students get tortured, sexually assaulted, and force them to sit on electric chairs. These kinds of mistakes should never happen again, never. Also, the people who went to residential schools, and their family are probably thinking to not allowing this happen again, ways to prevent this tragedy is to understand the deepness of the situation, take actions by their own to prevent it, and to convince the government to promise things like this will never happen in their account. In conclusion, residential schools are a memory we don't want to face, but have to face it to never let things like the past happen.

In every country, there are flaws and mistakes made. Canada is mostly a peaceful and safe country. We have the Charter of Rights and Freedom that doesn't tolerate discrimination, racism, sexism, etc. And though it seems like a country that has never made mistakes before, Canada has done something cruel too. Residential schools are schools in the past where indigenous children were forced to attend. There was a 1/25 chance of a child dying there which is just as high as Canadians dying in a war. Many people know that residential schools were there to change the indigenous peoples' culture, traditions, and make them the same as the nuns and priests. However, many people don't know that the topic goes way further. Children there are physically abused by employees of the school and even by the other children. They are sexually assaulted too and were given unbearable punishments like being put in a electrical chair, or being forced to eat your own vomit. When I watched a documentary of the residential schools, I was upset and frustrated of how badly the indigenous children were treated. They were treated awfully. The nuns and priests thought of them as play toys and not humans. Even if my generation wasn't involved when the residential schools occurred, as a Canadian, we have to make sure this never happens again. We aren't the ones to blame but we should still be educated about what happened back then and what we can do about it next time so our past won't repeat.

Residential schools. They will forever be a terrible part of Canada’s history. Today we watched a documentary on the St. Anne’s residential school and the terrible atrocities that were committed there. We all have our part to play in order to help reconcile with the indigenous communities. Just saying “I’m sorry.” isn’t enough. The biggest part we can all play is in campaigning for there to be justice for the genocide that was committed. A true, unbiased system of justice would have comedown hard on the staff of residential schools and the organizations that funded it, even the government, instead of letting the abusers off with at most, a slap on the wrist. We all also need to acknowledge that we live, work, and play on indigenous land that is rightfully theirs. Sure, that message is said quite often, but it is one thing to say it and another thing to actually care and respect. I personally am very grateful that I can live on this land even though I don’t deserve it. All in all, the scares left on this country are horrible, but they should not be forgotten or covered up. It happened, it was horrifying, and we can only truly live on if we reconcile with the first nations people.

Racism causes many problems, from making someone’s day worse to affecting generations after generations and destroying their cultures. Sadly, that’s what happened in 20th century Canada. Currently, Canada is a great country where we have many rights and freedoms to essentially do whatever we want. Our race, gender, religion — none of that affect our lives or the way we are treated by others. However, that wasn’t the case for indigenous children just a few decades ago. They were taken away to go to residential schools, where they would be forced to lose their cultures and be beaten if they ever misbehaved. I knew this many years ago, but not until today did I learn how cruel the people running these schools are and the extent to which the children were tortured. In class, we watched a documentary on St. Anne’s Residential school. I learned that the nuns and priests would physically, mentally, and sexually abuse the students to the point where 1 in 25 students would die during their years at the school. Though all the residential schools have already shut down, the impact that they had made on the indigenous peoples was huge and will continue to affect them if nothing is done. Therefore, though we didn’t have anything to do with residential schools, we still need to do our parts to reconcile with the indigenous peoples. Some ways we could do this would be educating ourselves and spreading awareness to others. Doing so will reduce racism by teaching people how terrible it truly is and discourage it, preventing racist things from happening in the future. We could also donate or interact with indigenous people more to learn their traditions to welcome them into Canada once again.

Residential schools is a ginormous mistake made in Canadian history, and I have 2 ideas for reconciliation with the first people. First one way of reconciliation is to start teaching it in schools, because if we teach it to more people we can let them react and help with the situation. Second we can have the culture to be passed down and recorded it so the culture doesn't disappear. That's 2 ways to do reconciliation with the first people there with some healing to the culture.

One of Canada's darkest periods were the Residential schools. 150,000 indigenous people were put into the residential schools where they were tortured, abused physically and sexually, punished severely, and driven out of their culture. Though they are gone now, the effects that it's had on the past are dwelling upon us right now. Reconciliation should be put to use in order to restore peace with the indigenous communities. A way we can do this is having past abusers punished, and they should be punished severely, and they should not be charged with only abuse, but they should be charged with (if multiple, then multiple) sexual abuse of a minor and should be sent to solitary confinement to let them sink in their old memories and regret their decisions. (I know that's a bit harsh but the cases that were listed in the St. Anne's residential school weren't harsh enough) Another way we can reconcile is to teach the future generations of this past so that they don't repeat our mistakes. They will learn about the past and realize that this was wrong and that they shouldn't do it.

Residential schools were one of Canada’s darkest parts of history. Children were forcibly taken from their homes and forced to forget their culture. The residential schools were so bad that you had a higher chance of surviving fighting in world war 2. Some ways of reconciliation is to teach it in schools, because until a few days ago, not everyone knew a lot about the residential schools, and we should at least be taught a bit about them. Canada’s history is horrible and we should acknowledge it and make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

One of the darkest part of the Canadian history. Residential schools. Although we have made mistakes we can still redo it it, and since we started it. We have to end it. Things we can do to make things better is paying our respects to those who suffered and endured the harsh punishments of the nuns including physical, mental and sexual abuse. As kids we learn about how they felt and why it was considered a “dark side of the moon” but a question I always had is how come people were so...Brutal back then? I mean why would anyone want to do this? But I guess it happened and it all led down to us having to be different and pay our respects and undo the things we have done as Canadians. Will the indigenous people ever forgive us for what we did? Or will we have to live up in shame.
