Monitor Comprehension

Today, students started the day off by learning how to monitor their comprehension by slowing things down, rereading, checking a dictionary, asking someone, reading for context, etc. Being able to monitor one's comprehension is an important strategy to use when reading text. Later, students learned how to reduce/simplify fractions. In addition to this, they continued working on their science lab write-ups.
IMPORTANT:
1.) READING: All students are expected to complete daily home reading and the post a response assignments on the class website.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes

2.) MATH: Complete 3 simplifying/reduction fractions worksheets

3.) SCIENCE: Complete section 1 of your lab write-up.

4.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH: Complete visible thinking and graphic organizer for monitoring
comprehension.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain what it means to monitor my comprehension.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format: intro/body/conclusion
2.) BODY: Includes at least 3 different things you can do to monitor your comprehension when
reading. YOU MUST INCLUDE 3 EXAMPLES OF HOW YOU DO THIS when you read. Be
sure to mention the M.C. tips you learned in class today (slow down, re-read, stop and think,
ask a friend, look it up in a dictionary, etc).
3.) EXAMPLES: Be sure to give examples of how you monitor your comprehension in your daily
life when you read or watch shows/movies, etc.
4.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: State if you feel you met the above criteria in one sentence after your
PAR.
5.) PEER FEEDBACK: Give one student feedback on their examples. Did they use real
examples from their daily life. It can be based on school examples.
6.) REVISION: post a revised version after you have made some improvements.

Monitoring comprehension. What is it? Making connections, visualize, inferring and asking questions, all those are needed when improving on comprehension, to put it another way strategy. When do we use these strategy’s? When you’re asking yourself a question like “I’m unsure in this text area” Or expressing how you feel about the text, that’s a sign of you showing that you’re getting a better understanding of what’s happening in the story so far. When monitoring, you want to make sure that the story makes sense, understanding the plots to the story and what a word means. By using these strategy’s, I can become more engaged when reading a story, and gain more knowledge by understanding the texts better, and that’s what monitoring comprehension means.

"Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams for when dreams go life is a barren field frozen with snow." I didn't really understand that poem. I'm going to monitoring my comprehension. There are three things I can do to monitor my comprehension. First, I can reread this poem. Second, I can search any word I don't understand in the dictionary. This way it will give me more background knowledge to understand the poem. Lastly, I can stop and think. This will help me access my BK to see if I know any of the words and what they mean. It will help me know what the poem is about. That is three things you can do to monitor your comprehension. Now I am going to go do the things I said.

Monitoring my comprehension.
Three things I can do to monitor my comprehension while I read. 1st I can reread the paragraph and slow down and not read as fast so I can understand better. 2nd stop and think. 3rd ask a friend or look it up in a dictionary. An example might be when I watch a movie and I don’t know what Is happening I ask my dad or I keep watching carefully and watch how they act and listen what they say. That is what I do when I can’t figure something out in a book or a movie.

Do you know what monitoring comprehension is? When monitoring comprehension you are looking and notice when you are making connections, visualize and all that and why is that important you may ask monitoring comprehension is important in many different ways such as when you know you are comprehending it helps and it means that you can do it a lot more and also you can improve your vocabulary say that there’s a word you don’t know you can look back and use strategies and that means your aware of what your doing so you will get better and better. Now you know why monitoring comprehension is important.

Good start for your paragraph. One thing is that at the start of every sentence, remember to capitalize the first letter like when you started of your sentence with “monitoring” remember to Capitalize the M. One other thing is that when adding that comma after the word “connections” to me, it doesn’t seem like it makes much sense to put that there so make sure to change that.

Realizing that you haven't read for quite a few days (and that you might not be rewarded with Hong Bucks tomorrow), you come to a conclusion that reading for half an hour is something worth accomplishing first. Therefore, you decide to snatch a random novel from your bookshelf and begin to read a few pages, so you can get a feel for the book. While reading, you figure out that the novel you picked is a bit above your reading level, as some words and phrases are confusing. Luckily, at school that day, your class learned all about monitoring comprehension and you are able to use that knowledge to help you understand most of the text. What did he learn at school? Well, let me explain.

To better understand what monitoring comprehension means, let's break the words down. Monitoring something is like keeping track of it and comprehension is someone's understanding of something. Together, monitoring comprehension means to keep track of your understanding of something you are doing, like watching a movie or reading a book. In addition, looking at the text features (words) around a word you don't understand helps you make a reasonable guess on what it means. If you don't know the word "miscellaneous", then you could look at the word in its context (which could be like "There were miscellaneous objects on the table.") and figure out that it means "variety of gathered objects". Another way to monitor your comprehension is to ask a friend, a parent, or a teacher if a word, phrase, or section of text confuses you. Asking a person with more background knowledge than you is important because they might be able to explain to you what your source of confusion (words, phrases, etc.) means by sharing their B.K. For example, sometimes while I'm watching shows and movies with my parents, I don't understand certain scenes. If I notice that my parents seem to understand it better than I can, then I'll ask them. Usually, they can answer my questions about the show/movie, which in turn, improves my B.K. Now you know some ways you can monitor your comprehension while reading on a daily basis. This means that no one can understand everything, or at least, not right away. This is why we use the reading strategy "Monitoring Comprehension." Monitoring comprehension is when you surveil your understanding of something, and that's not just reading. Here's an example for you; Let's say you were reading a verbose, scientific article. You might not understand a lot of words in the article. So, you monitor your comprehension. There are many strategies that you can use to boost your comprehension of something, but for now, let's just say you used these MC strategies; reread the text, check the context and use your background knowledge, and use a dictionary or ask someone for the definition. All of these strategies can be quite helpful when trying to figure out a wordy, confusing article. I know this from experience. I use all three of these strategies all the time to expand my own vocabulary. Mostly, I use them when I'm reading a book and I don't understand a certain word. They work really well for me and help me a lot, but you might have a MC strategy that works for you. But whether you do or not, if you ever have trouble with a word or two, try using one of these strategies. Who knows, it could be a flop that you don't like using, or it could a completely new discovery for you that could help you for the rest of your life.

This means that no one can understand everything, or at least, not right away. This is why we use the reading strategy "Monitoring Comprehension," or MC. Monitoring comprehension is when you look at your understanding of something, and that doesn't necessarily have to be reading. Here's an example for you; Let's say you were reading a verbose, scientific article. You might not understand a lot of words in the article. So, you monitor your comprehension. In fact, there are many strategies that you can use to boost your comprehension of something, but for now, let's just say you used these three MC strategies; reread the text, check the context, and use a dictionary or ask someone. In case you're unsure of what all these strategies do or mean, let me explain them to you. To start, the MC strategy "rereading" is one that a lot of us probably use all the time. Rereading is simply when you read over a sentence or text again to better understand it. It could also be used when you forget something, so you reread the text to help yourself recall it. The next MC strategy on the list is the "check the context" strategy. This is when you look at the rest of the text to better understand what the fragment of text that you are reading, means. In simpler words we look at the topic of the text and use our BK to figure out what something means. Lastly, when you don't understand something or you don't know what a word means, you can just search it up, or ask. All of these strategies can be quite helpful when trying to figure out a wordy, confusing article, and I know this from experience. As a matter of fact, I use all three of these strategies all the time to expand my own vocabulary. Mostly, I use them when I'm reading a book and I don't understand a certain word, but they can be used for anything. They work really well for me and help me a lot. Monitoring Comprehension means to properly understand something. Monitoring Comprehension can help you a lot in terms of reading to understand the book. Visualizing is when we listen to a sound or look at an unexplained picture, we want to close our eyes to imagine seeing something for example: somebody puts up a creepy Halloween noise, we close our eyes, imagine what we will see in our mind, then I felt like I saw a creepy monster aka many voices which is a connection to something we shouldn’t talk about at school. For visualizing an unexplained picture, we look at it and ask some questions and find some theory of weird parts of the picture. For example: You look at a picture with people that have white eyes, and 1 person in front of them. You think that the people with white eyes could be zombies, or it could be blind people and the person that isn’t blind could be a guide. These are some visualizations and as you visualize more your thinking gets deeper and you could connect that with zombie movies or medical movies. You could ask questions like this: Why do these white eyed people have an angry face? You could answer it with: They might be people shamed that they are blind. So, this is how you use Monitoring comprehension. As you use these strategies you will become better at understanding mystery and connecting with more new things you read or watch. When you read do you have trouble understanding? Then our lesson of monitoring comprehension might help you. Monitorium comprehension is the learning of skills to let you understand while reading. We have a few skills listed, one of the most common using one is to reread the sentence and it will help you understand. There are also skills as slow down, stop and think, read ahead and accessing and building background knowledge.Slow down is obviously make your reading past slow and have a little bit time to let you think. Stop and think means to stop continue reading and think about the meaning of the text. Read ahead means leaf the confusion and look clues from the text behind. Last but not least accessing and building background knowledge, it means understand the meaning by hooking up pictures searching up on dictionary etc in order to build up your background knowledge. Monitor your comprehension is always one of the most important thing while you're reading because when you're reading the biggest point is to understand the text and monitoring comprehension is excuse that let you understand the text. I also think this lesson is very important for me because why you're reading I always have at least one or two words that I don't understand, so this lesson will solve my problem.

Feedback - Overall, I think you just need to work on your grammar, and make sure to watch out for your gerunds*, *when a word is added with an "ing" at the back. For instance, the sentence, "there are also skills as slow down, stop and think..." You should change it to "there are also skills such as stopping to slow down and think, reading ahead, and building up background knowledge." Didn't understand the book you were reading? Monitor comprehension can help you a lot! But first, what does monitor comprehension even mean? So if we break the word down, monitoring means constantly checking and observing the progress of something. Comprehension means the action of understanding something, ao if we put the words together, it means constant checking of the understanding of something. But how do we do that? The first option is to stop and think, to give your brain the time to process all that information that you took in, you can think about the important event that happened in the book you're reading. the second option is to reread the text that you are reading, it gets you a more clear understanding and memory of the text. Another way is to read it slowly, it gives you more time to think about the text instead of just only reading it. It's also essential to identify the source of confusion, you won't know how to understand it if you don't know what is confusing you. Well, if you did, that means you've done something called monitoring comprehension. What is monitoring comprehension, you ask? Well, it's a strategy used to help a person understand something, more specifically a piece of text. Within this strategy, there are more strategies you use. Some strategies include, rereading the sentence or phrase, reading the sentence for context, checking a dictionary or the internet, and many more. I'm going to talk about three of these strategies, though keep in mind there are a variety of them to choose from. Firstly, we have checking the internet. For example, when I was reading Lester in class, I didn't know what a banyan tree was. So, I used the iPad to search it up, and now I know what a banyan tree is. This strategy is a bit faster than looking through a dictionary if you don't know a word, and is helpful when trying to look for images. The second strategy is rereading. I use this a lot. An example would be when I'm reading a book, and I don't understand or I don't know a word, I reread the sentence or phrase. When rereading a sentence with a word you don't know in it, it can help you see the context and make an inference on what the word could mean. Finally, asking a teacher, parent, or friend. Ever heard of reading strategies? There are several but the explanation today will be about monitoring comprehension. Monitoring comprehension is just as it sounds but with many other supporting notes and tips. You may have the skill to read and monitor but have you ever struggled? These are some strategies and tips that can help you improve your understanding. The first tip is to reread. Sometimes rereading helps you understand more because reading something difficult to understand may be confusing the first time. The 2nd example is to read slowly, do you expect yourself to understand something if u just rush through reading it? Nope, read slowly so it is easier to understand. The 3rd strategy is to look at words (I forgot which one it was). If there isn't a word you know and you just skip by it when reading, do you think you'll know what it means? Of course not so you must use a dictionary, iPad or any other device to search up the definition. By using these strategies and tips, understanding what you're reading is going to be so much easier!

Are you also having trouble understanding a book? Like me, I've also had trouble before. But since Mr. Hong introduce me to Novel Approach it helps me to understand the book and make Background knowledge use your imagination to understand the book clearly. This morning division 1 learned monitoring comprehension. It's a part of the Novel approach. So what is monitoring comprehension? Monitoring Comprehension is like reading a book and listening to a music. You will repeat the song all over again if you don't get it to understand you're going to repeat until you get the right melody and right tune. Example: I'm reading a book called Fish In a Tree. At first I didn't get it because I didn't the book. I read it again until I understand and make background knowledge with it. You're reading a quote. Some quotes have a hidden message on it or it has a point. I remember a person told me that " Life is really a short dream of dream of happiness & sadness" that's what she told me I won't forget that ! I get her point I or what she was talking about!

What does monitoring comprehension mean? Yesterday, during novel approach Mr. Hong taught us about monitoring comprehension. What does it actually mean? Well, if you look at the word monitoring it means to observe and check the progress or quality of something over time. Then, if you look at the meaning of comprehension, comprehension means the action or capability to understand something. So, if you put the meanings together you get “observing and checking to have the capability to understand something.” which basically means rereading it over and over. How do you know that? Well, to help you monitor your comprehension there is many different strategies you can use. For example, one strategy is stop and think. Say you’re reading a book but don’t understand what just happened you can stop and think about what you think might’ve happened. Another strategy is rereading. rereading is when you don’t understand something so you read it over and over again to get a little bit more of an understanding about it. Next, we have slow down. Slowing down while you read is a great strategy if you don’t understand something. Just like rereading, rereading and slow down are something you should do together. So, if you don’t understand something slow down and read it again. There is many more different strategies you can use while trying to monitor you comprehension. In conclusion, after you have just read my paragraph do you think you have a little bit more of an understanding of what monitoring comprehension means?

Monitor comprehension is a very important part of reading. It means to understand a sentence that you read from a book, poem, news articles, etc. There are three steps to help your understanding. First of all, read it slowly. When you read it over and slowly you might get what they are saying. Secondly, you check the dictionary, to see if you could find anything about the sentence that you do not understand. There might be words that you still didn't learn yet so it is good to check the dictionary. Last but not least, asking others. Asking others is a great way of understanding something. You could ask the teachers, your friends, your siblings, and anyone that have time to help you. They could share their point of view of what they think of it. These are the three points that could help understanding of reading stuff, I have used them during class, all of these points are really good because I learned them from Mr. Hong.
