The Inquiry Process

Today, we restarted the learning about the inquiry process in Social Studies. Mr. Fisher talked about inquiry and the process itself. We also created criteria around behaviour for students and teachers during lessons and during independent work time. We will review the criteria charts before every lesson to remind students what the expectations are. The idea is to make it as explicit as possible. We also continued practicing our reading/comprehension strategies through more visible thinking activities.

CHALLENGE/GOAL: For everyone to complete tonight's P.A.R.

1.) MATH: Comparing fractions quiz on Thursday.

2.) LANGUAGE ARTS: Work on your weekly words.

3.) SCIENCE:

Final photo essays are due and presented on Friday.
Continue improving on your first draft based on the feedback you received.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

What is one question you came up with from Social Studies today?
Why are you interested in this question?
Do some research and list 3 facts related to your question.
Give one point about why you think it is reliable. List at least 2 reliable websites you used to find the facts. (Based on the C.R.A.A.P. test)
If you like, feel free to review the first 20 minutes of the video here. Do not go beyond the 20 minute mark.
Ask one student a question about their question.
Revise your paragraph by including a more inviting lead (hook).

my P.A.R.
So in the video they said that human brains were bigger than ape brains but that got me thinking because I read somewhere that human brains were shrinking. So my question basically is are human brains bigger, equal to or smaller than ape brains. It turns out that human brains were getting bigger and that fact was true for two million evolution years! There was a reversal. Over the past 20,000 years the average human male brain has been decreasing from 1,500 cubic centimetres to 1,350 cubic centimetres. That's apparently the size of a tennis ball shrunk! The female brain has shrunk about the same proportion too! Also if this keeps happening for the next 20,000 years it will approach to the size of the Homo Erectus. The size of our brains would be only 1,100 cubic centimetres! MIND BLOWN!!!!!! One sub question I had was will we get dumber?

I was interested in this because I read it in an article about brains shrinking and then in the video they mentioned about human brains being bigger. The website I used was dicovermagazine.com. I didn't find any other websites because this one had a lot of information. I found this source reliable because John Hawk was interviewed (if any of you know who he is) and I've been using that website for along time.

My question is "what did the early humans eat?"cause I was thinking this question long long time ago.I am interest in it because usually they can't find any food.

And it said the early humans were mostly vegetarian, eating fruits, nuts, berries, occasionally fish and animals they hunted. They were not great hunters due to the crude construction of their spears and axes.

Who, What, When and Why the main words we use to start a question. So did I come up with a question during social studies? Well I guess we will have to wait until next time......... Just Kidding. The question I came up with is how did the 'Pre-Humans' Or Homo Erectus have the knowledge to build fires, make tools and know what they can and can not eat? Where did they get taught? This interested me because they were the first humans so who taught them how to do this stuff. Did they have like a instinct like "Oh I'm know how to make fire me smart". Like actually how on earth did they know. I don't know if I will have time for the research part but, if I do I will come back and do it.

My question for social studies is how was pokemon made and who made it. I was interested in this because I play pokemon games like ultra moon and I sometimes wonder how did pokemon start out before. A website that really helped me was history.ca / history of pokemon

First question:
Who created or discovered fire and when?
- Earliest evidence for controlled use of fire is at the Lower Paleolithic site of Gesher Benot Ya'aqov in Israel
- African people used fire 800,000 or a million years ago
- Many scientists believe that fire was achieved by an ancestor know by Homoerectus
I didn't get who exactly but the closest I got was African people.
Second question:
How did Homoerectus evolve from time to time?
- It started with Australopithecus Afarensis, then Homo Habilis, Homo erectus, Homo Neanderthalensis and then Homo Sapiens, which is us humans
- Homoerectus fossils are the oldest known early humans to have possessed modern human like body proportions
- I can't find any more info.....

For the first question I was interested in it because since we all use fire to cook or to heat up how did the person who discovered it created it or found fire just laying somewhere? I didn't find who but I kind of found when..
Second question made me think how homoerectus evolved because all of this is interesting, learning about our ancestors. I wanted to know how it came from human-ape lookalikes to how us humans look now. I didn't quite find a lot but the first fact kind of helped answer my question.

For the video we watched today, one question for the documentary was, if there are still walking apes in this world, would they continue to evolve into a human?

I tried to research this question, but all of the websites are either outdated (2 or 3 years ago) or has text I don't really understand.

My question: When did the first apes come to earth? I was interested in this question because I wanted to know more about apes and history about them.
Answers:
- 3.5 billion years ago
- The earth was 4.54 years old when they came
- At that time when earth was 4.54 years old, it is also known as Cenozoic era
This website was reliable to me because I don't know why, I just always trust wikipedia. Also when I looked at other websites, they also had the same information so I assumed that the information was true.

My is question is "what language or sound does the first humans speak or make? Like apes' sound they make or like humans?"
I was interested in this question because I was curious of what kind of language they speak. I'm not sure I'll be able to find out because I don't think people can find that out from fossils.

A question I came up with (that didn't get answered during the documentary) was 'If they haven't seen some of the homo-erectus bones, how were the researchers able to find out it was from them?'. Once they mentioned how they haven't seen the rest of the bones of the homo-erectus, I started wondering how they knew it was the bones of the homo-erectus. I got interested on how they figured it out and what tools they used (if they used tools).
FACTS:
-The researchers knew the shape and size of the skull knowing it was the homo-erectus
I could only write down one fact because my question is mainly about the researches and not that much about the homo-erectus. I needed to re-watch the documentary to find some facts but they didn't explain how they knew it was their bones.
LET ME MAKE AN INFERENCE!
By watching it again I found out that they found the whole skull first and knew it was a homo-erectus skull by the shape and size. Meaning if the researchers found the other bones afterwards, the researchers would've known the other bones are the homo-erectus bones.
NOW IF MY INFERENCE IS CORRECT, I would have basically already answered my question. I'm sure it is correct because afterwards they named the homo-erectus (IT WAS TERKANA BOY AND I DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL I RE-WATCHED THE DOCUMENTARY).
Since I used the documentary as a resource I would need to explain why I found it useful. I found it a useful source because the teachers trust it enough to show us students.

It's sad knowing I answered my question (like I do for most of my questions) but at least it actually got answered. It isn't really a good thing to be happy about because this is supposed to be an inquiry where you do multiple researches, and the question gets answered right when I tried researching.

My question is why did the apes start walking on two legs? I’m interested in this because the video we watched talked about their brains, body structure, tools, etc. But it didn’t talk about why they started walking on two legs in the first place. Therefore it has been nagging me since I started thinking about it.
Facts:
-Walking upright freed the hands for carrying and manipulating tools.
-Africa began to lose some of its forests as grasslands grew, so our ancestors left the forests and moved out onto the savannahs.
-Since they weren’t in the trees anymore, they had to walk instead of climb. Since apes use 75% more energy than us while walking, they had to adapt and thus the bipedal ape was born.

Do you want to know how scientists can make a sculpture using only bones?I am interested because it sounds astonishing that you can make a sculpture using bones.Most of the bones are broken or lost so they have to make 3D bones to fill up.Same species have similar bone structures.The cartilage disk do not fossilize.It is a reliable source because it is from the national museum of natural history.

My question was were Homo erectus so tall? I wanted to research this question because in the video they had a 5 foot 3 eight year old, and I thought that was crazy, so I wanted to know why.

The first site I used is www.smithsonianmag.com, I asked my Grandma, she says it's very reliable. It says A longer life expectancy may have allowed them to grow taller than earlier species according to researchers. another fact I got from this website was that diet climate and environment were linked to height differences.

The second website I used was biologywise.com I think it is reliable, I might've seen it before. The fact I got from it was that the average height of a homo habilis (earlier species) was 4.3, and the average height of homo erectus was 5.10, so the homo got taller as time progressed.

Why is the expected lifespan in Japan higher then North America? I'm interested in this question because I've never really understood why Japanese people have a longer life expectancy, then North Americans. I didn't do a lot of research yet, but I will. And all the research I have done was not very interesting.

My question was how are black holes, white holes, and worm holes formed. I'm interested in this question because I love learning about space and its so interesting how the galaxies were formed and I still wonder how the universe was created. Facts about black holes: light cannot escape from a black hole. A black hole does not have a surface. When a object reaches the breaking point of a black hole that object gets ripped up smaller then a Adam Molecule. I don't know the sources that I used because I don't have my book with me.

We had one of the most interesting social studies lessons today.
It was based around the early humans and we are supposed to come up with a question.
My question is, what was it like to live around 1.3 million years ago?
What were their sleeping conditions? They slept on the ground in caves usually. How were bonds made or established? Bonds between the female and male are usually made by the males competing for the female. What was entertainment? If it was a young man the father would teach him how to hunt, if it was a girl the mother would teach it to cook and make medicine.
I’m interested in this question because there are so many different specific topics inside of the general question I focused on.
