Halloween STEM challenge!

Today, you participated in a STEM Challenge with our Division 9 buddies! Your challenge was to create a structure out of Halloween candies and toothpicks. Many of you learned the base of your structure needed to be the most solid part of your creations. You used science, technology, engineering, and math to design your structures! You also helped your little buddies document the learning on FreshGrade.

This is a unreliable because I have done this with my grade four teacher. My grade four class decided that it is fake. The lesson was to not trust all the websites. So now I don't have to even look at the link. (but I did)

LOLL!!!!!!

I didn't even think this was real for one second! This is a unreliable because I have done this with my grade four teacher. My grade four class decided that it is fake. The lesson was to not trust all the websites. So now I don't have to even look at the link. (but I did) the first reason is octopuses need water and can't live a second on a tree. The second reason is if octopuses are in air, then how do they spray ink? Exactly they can't. the last reason is octopuses are fat and heavy so if it was on the tree, then it would just break the branch.

Actually, I think it was unreliable about the information in the website because the domain type doesn't match with the content type. Aftet I saw the portfolio of the author of the website, it looks quite interesting. However, I think it was fake because of the information.

Suddenly, I have an idea. I search tree octopus and I found a bunch of information. It started interest me. At the end, I think this website is reliable. However, I can't really tell it is a real or a fake message.

When I was reading about the octopus, I was starting to think that it

isn't real. It's called a Tree Octopus, but I don't know it can survive on land.

A group of octopus are called octopi. Can it actually live on water? Do they have poison? It does not look trust worthy or real.octopi often stay in water. Can it breathe in water?

WAIT WHAT? When I first looked at this website I thought “no way this is fake", but as I started reading the article it seemed pretty legitimate. Using my background knowledge I still didn't believe this article because the only octopus I've heard of is the ones that live in the water. I also thought that if they were endangered I would have known. I also learned to look at the URL which was .net and I was not quite sure what that meant. I soon went to look for the author which is Lyle Zapato I soon went on to do a small bit of research and turns out he wrote a few books and I slowly considered this was a real article. After combining all this information I researched "tree octopus" and lots of results came rolling in. In conclusion, I think this article is legitimate and reliable.

When I started reading the information I thought it was fake/unreliable because I thought octopus's were underwater creatures. It also said that it's natural predators were bald eagles and sasquatches. Although I do think it's reliable to at the same time because after I searched up tree octopus I found a lot of websites about them. In conclusion I'm still confused and I'm not sure.

@Ariel: I think you should visit some of the websites to see if the information given is the same. Also, plural form of octopus is octopi, not octopus’s. In addition, I don’t think you need the ‘Although.’ ‘I do think it’s..’ is good enough.

An example of a sentence with the word although would be: “Although I got an A on the math test, my parents still weren’t impressed.”

Both "octopuses" and "octopi" are considered acceptable plural forms of "octopus". However, "octopi" has become accepted only because of its prevalent usage. It is technically incorrect. "Octopodes" may be technically correct, but is little used or accepted. (lol Max your feedback is wrong)

Wait on the internet, it says the greek word, where it came from says octopodes and is mistakended for octipi. so octipi is wrong. octopuses are just the standerd english for the plural of octopus.

After my investigations, I found out the website is unreliable. First of all, the information is not reliable. Cascadia is not a real place; I searched it up on Google to prove it; octopi do not change colour, and there is no such thing as octopus trade.

Second of all, the URL ends in ‘.net’ which implies that it is a personal website/blog, and isn’t that trustworthy. I know this because trustful websites end in ‘.gov, .edu, .org, or .mil.’

Finally, to further expose this website, I looked up Tree Octopus on the Internet, and loc.gov and dailymail.co both say that the website was a hoax made by Lyle Zapato in 1998.

Overall, although this website may seem good because it has a lot of information that seems true, it is actually a big scam, since majority of the information is fake and made up. I would not trust this website.

Finally, to further expose this website, I looked up Tree Octopus on the Google Chrome, and both websites loc.gov and dailymail.co/uk say that the the Tree Octopus was a hoax made by Lyle Zapato in 1998.

On the whole, although this website may seem good because it has a lot of information that seems true, it is actually a big scam, since majority of the information is fake and made up. I will not trust this website.

A fish can live in the land? wow! Amazing! Wait, it is true?
I think this website is unreliable. My first reason that I can prove is: I research it online to see if it real, I found a lot of the website and it all said the fish can't live without water, it is like human cannot live under the water, because it they live on the land, they cannot breathe, the fish system does not want their master to live in the land.
My second reason to prove it is: Fish also need oxygen to live, but their lungs are not designed to extract oxygen from the air. Instead, by passing the water through their specialized organs (called gills), they can remove the oxygen and eliminate waste gases. Since humans do not have gills, we cannot extract oxygen from water.
My third reason is: Fish have also evolved a body structure designed for living full time in an aquatic environment. Some fish can indeed survive brief periods of time out of water, some longer than others, but even if they have an organ (called a labyrinth organ) allowing them to breathe air, they still have no means of locomotion out of water, and will simply lay there until something eats them, or they die from exposure. Having fins, and a very streamlined, low friction body shape are highly effective means of locomotion in water, but are essentially useless attributes for moving around on land.
So, now, I can prove that fish cannot live on land!

First of all, I skim through the general website. It seems legit, but I don't see anything about the author, which makes it suspicious. Next, I search up the topic that this website is explaining. "Tree octopus"...wow! This website is at the top of the list. I don't see the little sticker that says "ad" though, so many people actually visit this site. The site also follows the digital citizenship rule of listing its sources. The only thing that helped me really see that this website isn't just an information site is that the URL says zapatopi, which isn't even a real word, and it also says ".net" which is the URL for a company trying to promote their business. This is true because the title of the article is also "Help Save the Endangered Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus from Extinction". Lastly, I've never even heard about tree octopi before, so this website isn't meeting my expectations.

Overall, I think that although this website has good information, it is also for a company and it shouldn't be fully trusted.

Ok, what is going on I hear children starting to research on tree octopus’s hahaha what do they think their learning! First reason this website has FAKE NEW like how in the whole bloody universe can octopus live or move on land IT’S IMPOSSIBEL THATS WHY!!!

Second reason I would start to research on who created the website and then I found out that this person is Lyle Zapato, has some good history like publishing books and now using my background knowledge I am coming to understand that this sit is reliable!

When it comes to researching, almost everyone prefers to use the internet. While it might be convenient and useful to use, there are risks and disadvantages. For example, sites may be misleading, inappropriate subjects may pop up, and so on. But as long as you know how to be safe and wise on the internet, it’ll be a great source to use!

In my opinion, this site is not reliable because of many factors. First, the website URL/address ends in “.net”. According to my knowledge, I know that it means that this site is personal. As a result, I needed to be more strict and careful while continuing to see if this is a reliable source.

Second, I can use my background knowledge to see if it’s real or not. From what I’ve learned, octopuses cannot live on trees because they need to be in the water. While I was searching through the website, I found several suspicious factors that made me question this website. Some of which is the author of the website (Lyle Zapato which has false identification information), its language (tells us not to trust teachers), and it’s unusual content (some of which is telling us to read backwards).

Finally, I found the key point that made me 100% sure that this was fake. I used the power of the internet and searched up the name of the site, “Zapatopi”. I realized that this was an internet hoax that many students fell for, even Wikipedia identifying it as a hoax. Wow, I was surprised when I realized that it was fake. I almost believed it in the first place, seeing how much information was on it. Looking at how much students on the website thinking that it’s real, I am definitely shocked. This really teaches us to be aware of the internet.

In conclusion, I think that being safe on the internet is a skill required before researching. Being able to just search a term and finding all about it is great, but just like I learned from today, you always have to be careful. Having so much students saying it is reliable, I feel like we should definitely practice more!

I knew that this site was unreliable. These are reasons that this site is not reliable.

The first reason is the website name. It said net and net is unreliable.
The second reason is the octopus tentacles. The trees are not sticky for the octopus to climb on.
The last reason is the landscape. Octopuses live only in the ocean.

So in conclusion, this site is fake and unreliable.

Woah, and I thought it was real for a second.

Okay, so when I first went on the website, I thought it looked quite legit but I'm one of those people who never judges things by how they look. After, I actually started reading some things and that's when I started to think that something wasn't right. Especially the sightings. There was one of a "tree octopus", which is also a dumb name, climbing up a tree, grabbing onto branches like a huge daddy long legged spider would. I also read the links on the side, one of them being something along the lines of "brain sucking octopus"? I don't even know.

in conclusion though, I think it's fake.

Today I learned that it’s not easy to build towers because you’ll need time and lots of materials and it will be harder if you make it out of gummies. I think that website is reliable because it clearly shows that there’s lots of information in that website and has pictures of what they’re talking about. I also find it weird that there are octopus that lives on land. I personally did not know that until now and it makes it more weird that it’s on trees. I never knew that octopus can breath on land because I’ve never seen that and I thought they can only breath on water.

There is abundant information on the website. However, Is it precise? When I first looked at the website of https://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/, I was really convinced that the web page’s information was accurate. After closely examining the website, I believe that the site is a scam.

Firstly, the website is clearly unreliable because the URL link ends with .net. Utilizing my background knowledge, I assume .net means it is a personal blogging website. On a personal website, the owner can post unreliable information. The only URL address you can trust are .mil, .edu, .gov, and .org.

The second reason is there are numerous fake information on the website. Adopting my background knowledge, octopi can only live in the sea instead of on the land. All sea animals will be died if the are out of the water.

Thirdly, over ninety percent of my classmates said it was a scam. However, I still wanted to double check if they were correct. Then I found out that it is truly a hoax.

In conclusion, not all websites are reliable even though the give you a lot of information. You should always check the website’s URL link before using its information. I will not trust this website.

I think in your third paragraph you put all sea animals will be died if the are out of the water, but I think you mean that all sea creatures would be dead if they are out of the water for a long period of time. But otherwise your post is pretty accurate!

The Pacific Northwest Tree Octipu-nope. I don’t think this is reliable because octopuses are NOT land animals! Apparently octopuses CAN go on land but for only a few short minutes. They would absorb the oxygen through their skin, cool right? Then they have gills, which would be useless if they are a land animal. Hmm, it says that natural predators of the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus are animals like a SASQUATCH and a Bald Eagle..... Oh wow! That’s something I didn’t see coming! Sasquatches exist everyone! Well, actually you never know but it hasn’t been confirmed yet so keep dreaming!

When I first looked at the wed site I wasn’t sur if it was a good website. But once I read through it I saw their were links to different places and etc. On the other hand I did not see any credits section. I also thought about the fact that teacher probably would not sent us to a unreliable source. When looked at the photo I saw that the features that that type of octopus had were not the features that could help it in the jungle rain forest etc. I also agree with Emily there are no such things as Sasquatch. And how they measured seen like the way to measure they said something like for tentacle to other tentical. In conclusion I think that there is more evidence of the source being unreliable.

Tree octopus, I don't think so. First the writer that wrote this website is not even really that famous and the first thing we saw on google was that a website and they said the tree octopus website was fake.
Second, the foundation that was on the bottom was also fake. The third thing octopus is a marin animal so it is obviesle fake.
