Visible reading/thinking/learning strategies

Today, we learned about the importance of using our reading / thinking / learning strategies to help us learn! We learned that using the these strategies helps us improve our comprehension in all areas. At the end of today's teacher modelling of 'CRAZY DREAM', we were able to synthesize and evaluate our VISIBLE THINKING we came to an understanding of the big idea. Although Mr. Fisher and I had similar opinions, Lukas had a different one. Both big ideas were great and we both supported our big ideas with evidence from the text and our unique background knowledge. Remember, think of your book of background knowledge as 12 unique chapters to go with each year of your life! You can imagine how many chapters your teachers have?

Synthesizing and evaluating? What? I kind of zoned out sometime during the demonstration but I got the gist of what Mr. Hong was saying. Fun fact, gist is a rough translation of main idea... You see where I'm going with this?

To me, when synthesizing you are gathering the main bits information and presenting it in a way that isn't just straight up facts. An example of that process is our inquiries. We researched, and researched, then finally we sifted through whatever notes that were irrelevant and gathered the more relevant ones.

I remember Mr. Hong mentioning something about how all of the reading strategies help you get to the main idea. When you set a purpose, you set goals that help you keep your thoughts in an organised matter. Making connections? You determine what is significant based off of your own background knowledge. Visualization? It helps you find the really descriptive parts that probably had a larger amount of effort. A larger amount of effort means it should be more significant. When you determine what's important you use it to find the big idea, as you do with all the reading strategies. But this one is more important. You determine what's important by asking yourself, how does this help the story move along? It obviously wouldn't be story if it wasn't an actual story but you get what I mean. Right? I know I am forgetting a few but I can't remember them... Anyways, you use all of these strategies to help you find what's important. When you know what's important you can use that to infer what the main idea is. Or maybe not infer because it says there in the text but you get what I'm saying. Oh yeah! That's the one I was missing! When you infer you "Read between the lines" like Mr. Hong said. Basically you are making a hypothesis or that word from the word work last week that I can't remember...

In conclusion, after all that rambling of me trying to explain myself, to me synthesizing means gathering important information and presenting it in a concluding way that isn't just spurting up facts. It also includes some of your own opinion if you ask me. Evaluating is the process of finding all that (important) information by using all of the reading strategies.

Today, we had a Novel Approach lesson based on how to make synthesizing and evaluating. I earned a lot of things about synthesizing and evaluating today. I think this strategies is a really good strategies that can help us understand the books or poem.

In my opinion, I think synthesizing and evaluating can help me have a better understanding on reading. BUt first of all, what is synthesizing and evaluating> Let's talk about synthesizing first. I think synthesizing means to put out strategies that we learned together.(inferences, purpose, BK and visualize) It also help us to make the big idea, because synthesizing can help us have a better understanding on the story, and if we understand the whole story, I think we will be able to make a interesting big idea!

Now, let's talk about evaluating! I think evaluating can help me improve my big idea, it can also help me analysis my thinking.

In conclusion, I can be able to understand what does synthesizing and evaluating means, and use it in my reading.

Today in class we learned synthesizing and evaluating!

What synthesizing and evaluating means to me, well for mean it’s very important. I synthesize and evaluate in most of L.A I do. If I don’t its kind of hard to do anything other wise. Now, what is synthesizing and evaluating? Well first of all synthesizing is making a connection, inference, purpose, etc. It’s very important to synthesize. Evaluating is thinking about the big idea, and what it mean to you.

After learning about this, I can use this strategy to help me when reading something.

Synthesizing is a incredibly substantial element to learning. It can be a devise to help show that the person in question had been able to understand what they might have researched in a project, and to show their answer. It can also be used as a sign of comprehension when reading. Many reading assignments are poems or short stories that sheaths a deeper meaning. Synthesizing is a tool to help create connections, inferences, and questions to deeper an understanding of one's story. If one is failing to comprehend the contents of a story or song, learning to synthesize can almost rip that issue to pieces.

Even when you are able to synthesize and show your opinions and understanding of the story, you need to explain what the protruding message of the story is. Evaluating is the key to that success. When evaluating, you take your BK (Background Knowledge), and infer about the story, the message starts to unsheathe and you can understand what the message might be. There will obviously be multiple answers, and it is always hard to find which is the definitive answer. There will be multiple answers and they might all right. Evaluating is key to understanding what the story is trying to tell you, this is a form of comprehension and it would be hard to be decisive without such a technique.

Using both of these techniques is the definitive way to fully understand the story. Both of these techniques are important, each of them alone are good for completing the task they were made for, but when they are combined it can create something that will most definitely help anyone.

Today we learned about sensitizing and evaluation and this was also during the afternoon. Today we learn about sensitizing which means basically what the big idea means to you and for example if you were given something and had a question and had “ what do you think the big idea is in this session here today “ and you would just say what you think it might be about for example if they were talking about “ fields in the mud “ I would think about war in world war 1 and 2 . I said in the movies they were fighting in mud and was raining because I’ve watched movies happen like that and that’s my opinion and yours might be different but that’s fine because everyone does not have the same background knowledge and the word I said was called “ background knowledge “ and I don’t think I said that write. Background knowledge means something you have experience or witnessed for example I was in a another country ones and on my experience was great and was fun and the country I went too was Seattle such that is where my aunt, auntie, and cousins live at. Evaluation means if you did something for example an art project and did very while but you have not yet have gotten your marks then sometimes they give you a paper and the questions are sometimes basically what you think you got in that test or project, ETC and there are Beginning,developing,applying, and Extending and basically worst to good.

Hmm… first of all, what does synthesizing and evaluating mean?

Synthesizing is when you change what your thinking as you read. Synthesizing is creating connections, making an inference etc. Evaluating is when you form an opinion, make a judgement or develop ideas after reading. Synthesizing and evaluating are important skills to have when you are reading. Those skills help me get a better understanding of what I’m reading. For example, synthesizing, when you form a connection or an inference you get a deeper understanding of what you are reading.

In conclusion, synthesizing and evaluating mean a lot to me when I’m reading because they help me get a better understanding of what I’m reading.

Don't fall asleep, don't fall asleep. I don't know why, but whenever we do novel approach I suddenly feel sleepy.
What is synthesizing and evaluating to me? Well from what I learned today, its the combination of all the strategies to find the big idea of a piece of text. How do the other strategies work together for synthesizing and evaluating?
Monitoring comprehension- If you don't know what a phrase means how would you understand the big meaning?
Connections- Connections help you have a deeper connection and understanding of the story, therefore, it's easier to identify the big idea.
Inferences- These make you are more engaged in the writing and also helps you get a deeper understanding.
Determining what's important- This helps you break down the writing and using all the text to come to a conclusion.
Setting a purpose- This helps you focus on one goal. This will keep your thoughts organized and will help you stay on task.
In conclusion, synthesizing and evaluating is the overarching reading strategy to me since it includes all the reading strategies.

What is the difference between synthesize and evaluate? Today, I have learned a lot from the lesson we had about Novel Approach based on how to use these two strategies to come up with the "Big Idea" on books or making poems.

Synthesize is when somebody combines two or more things to create an understanding of the information from different sources. It focuses on both main ideas and details and from there you can draw your own conclusion. Once you identified the recourses you can begin to evaluate. Evaluate is making a judgment about the value of something and find an inference after you get the evidence and to prove it.

Overall, both works together and by using these strategies you will understand the importance of each in Novel Approach to get the "Big Idea".

This was a really great post and the amount of progress your making is substantial, but no one is perfect so here is a small amount of feedback for you.

On the first paragraph, there was a small grammatical mishap regarding the first few words. What you originally stated was "What is the difference between synthesize and evaluate?" This has a small error as "synthesize" and "evaluate" are considered verbs, therefore they should be altered to be "synthesizing" and "evaluating". Also the first paragraph has a very large sentence, try to use a conjunction or period to separate it.

Once again on the second paragraph you had use "synthesize" instead of "synthesizing" on the first sentence. After "Main ideas" in the second sentence, try adding a comma. Once again you used "evaluate" Instead of "evaluating".

Overall this was a very thought out PAR, but I recommend looking over it multiple times to find any grammatical hiccups.

In the previous Novel Approach lessons, we learned many important reading strategies, such as monitoring your comprehension and making connections/inferences, but none are as crucial as synthesizing and evaluating. So, what exactly is synthesizing and evaluating?

First, let's begin with synthesizing. In my opinion, synthesizing is basically interpreting something (for example, a poem) and determining what is important to the overall "big idea" or message. This can be related to inquiry and the synthesis and evaluation sheet. In short, synthesizing is an analysis on the major details.

Now, that we've covered synthesizing, what is evaluating? Have you ever heard of your teachers evaluating your assignments? It means they are assessing your work based on criteria. Well, that is similar to what evaluating means in Novel Approach. In Novel Approach evaluation, you are looking over the piece of writing and determining what is important, as the criteria is asking for only information relevant to the main message/"big idea" of the writing.

Synthesizing and evaluating are the meat of a Novel Approach strategies Big Mac. Setting a purpose (the buns) is a key tenet because without a purpose, how are you going to know exactly what you are going to do?

Connections (the lettuce) and visualizations (the tomatoes) are somewhat related as you can make connections to yourself, other text, and the world while also visualizing your connections. This can aid your synthesizing and evaluating since I only make visualizations when there is a sufficient amount of details.

Monitoring your comprehension (the sauce) is ideally skimming the piece of writing and locating which spots you did not understand. Chances are, they could most likely be related to the "big idea" of the writing.

Inferences (the extra add-ons) are educated guesses foreshadowing what events you think will occur next based on evidence from the text and you background knowledge.

Finally, determining what's important is the whole Big Mac itself. All these above strategies cooperate with each other to help you determine the most important parts of the writing and form a summary.

As a recapitulation, the basic usage of this strategy is to carefully examine a piece of writing and decide which parts of text are related to the "big idea"/message of the piece. This strategy can function together with all the other strategies to determine what's important. The hamburger patty may not sound so appealing alone, but it definitely makes up a key role in the Novel Approach Big Mac!

Today we had our lesson on “Synthesizing and Evaluating.” They’re both very useful strategies that connect to all the previous lesson that we have taught. As you can tell what synthesizing means from the inquiry project we have done. It basically means how you came to understand something, your conclusion. It is about making your own learning statement with your background knowledge. I think for evaluating it means to find the big idea of the article. Or what it means to you. I learned there’s no right or wrong answer to a story, you could always have your own opinions, as long as it provides you advance to support our learning.

In conclusion, I think all those strategies will all help us to understand the whole story better. The reason why I said Synthesizing and Evaluating are connected to all those previous lessons we have taught because I think it is the process. For example, we have to understand why we’re reading something firstly and then make connections and inferences to help support us understand the story.

all that together is a combination of all the reading strategies to help you find out the big idea. And this is how the reading strategies help.
connections help you remember what you read because you have a connection to something that you won't forget. Monitoring your comprehension helps you understand better because Monitoring comprehension includes asking your friends and teachers and they can help you understand better. Inferences is hard to do for some students but it is when you know something that the text does not say. Determining what's important helps you know what's important or not so you know what to focus on. And lastly setting a purpose will help you know your goal so you can reach for it.

There are many stages of learning something, and some can be more complex than others. You learn by remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and then finally making a change or doing. You don’t have to go through all of these though, but the more you do, the better comprehension you get. Evaluating is basically the same as synthesizing, forming a new idea. Maybe a movie is talking about how a hacker hacks into someone’s social media account and how it can be very dangerous. You know that people use social media everywhere and that you probably even use it too. This forms a big idea that you should be careful and cautious when being on the internet.

In conclusion, synthesizing and evaluating is a very important skill to learn. It is a key of part of learning something, and it helps us form a new understanding and opinion. I’m sure these novel approach skills will be useful, even in the future.

Have to laid down my head, have to laid down my head. When we do novel approach, I sometimes can’t see or suddenly feel sleepy.

What is synthesis and evaluating to me. Synthesis is important information. For e.g. Tigers have good eyesight in night. That is important information. Evaluating is making an opinion of something. For e.g., the art we made an opinion of our picture and onomatopoeia word.

When I hear Novel Approach! It reminds me The learning never stops! I am always excited to learn, and always ready to learn. The feeling of learning makes me feel really “awesome”!

Synthesizing, analyzing, evaluating…… Wait, aren’t they all about critical thinking? Oh, so basically, we have to think it deeper on something. Maybe it’s a decision, an opinion, take a hard look to deepen our understanding.

Synthesizing is basically combining and producing? This makes me feel confused. Oh, synthesis is to combine your understanding with different ways. This surely could improve my understanding. This let me think about the reading skills of the novel approach. Making inferences, making connections with background knowledge, monitor comprehension. This really helps my understanding and to find the main, big idea.

Evaluating thinking is deeper thinking. It could be an opinion or decision. You will find out what you are good at or you have to improve on. Asking questions and monitor your comprehension will be helpful to make evidence to deepen your understanding.

Critical thinking really helps us with thinking and improving our understanding. It could also find the big idea of each writing or poems…… I am so excited about learning. I am looking forward to learning now

Synthesizing and Evaluating

Synthesizing means combining and producing, well that's a little confusing, I don't quite understand, but I know that it means to combine what info you know and make something out of what you have, for example, we synthesized in our social studies inquiry project and what we were asked to do was to explain what you have learned.

Evaluating means using the info that you have in your mind and your going to evaluate what the meaning or Big Idea is, and it must be based on real complete info.

Ahh! These are quite the amount of work for your brain. They both involve a lot of thinking. (I think I'm out of ideas for hooks now haha)

To me, synthesizing is when you create your own opinion and conclusions based off of some deep thinking about a certain topic. While synthesizing, you will think and wonder about a lot to form your own conclusions. The process isn't very simple. For your brain at least. You have to dig deep through out your entire process to form a good synthesis. To evaluate is something a little different. Evaluating is when you look at someone else's or own work and again, think of your entire process of how you got to where you are currently. Then, come to your own conclusions based off of your background knowledge.

That's what these things mean to me.
