The C.R.A.A.P. Test

Today, students had a great day of learning. We started the day with our hand washing carousel. Students were given soap outside of the school and they lathered up as they walked in to save time. Then they rinsed their hands off in class. Later, they had their first word work test of the year on electricity terms. Then, they had a Novel Approach assessment on their use of the reading strategies. In math, we started a new unit on decimals and completed a pre-assessment together to assess the background knowledge of the students. We then did an opening activity together to make sure all students understood the lesson. We ended the day with a lesson on reliable sources. Students learned about the C.R.A.A.P. TEST!

IMPORTANT:

1.) Choose any source of information you want to assess.
2.) PARAGRAPH FORMAT: intro/body/conclusion (in your conclusion, state what number out of 50 you would give this source of information)
3.) GIVENS: Spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure.
4.) REQUIREMENTS: Using the C.R.A.A.P. test, you must explain at least 1 point from each section of the C.R.A.A.P. test to state why you think a website or book is reliable.
5.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Check your work with the criteria above.
6.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give one student feedback on the above criteria.
7.) REVISION: edit/revise your original based on your self-assessment or peer feedback.

Is it reliable?
1(C) I think this website is reliable because it was last updated 1/10/2022.

2(R) Information is from classroom activity’s and there are links to videos.

3(A) I trust him because he is a certified teacher and he has a Masters degree. I also trust him because he works with my dad.

4(A) I trust the Vancouver school Board because there are in charge of public education and are regulated by the government.

5(P) Have a few opinions but and mostly information.

Over all I think Mr.hongs class.com is a reliable source.

Today i will be trying to figure out if a website is reliable of not using CRAAP and the website i will be doing is called libguides.edu. First off i can tell this is some what reliable because it has edu at the end that typically means that it was published by like a professor or like a collage or something like that. secondly i can tell that its legit because it was updated last in august of 2021. third i can tell that its legit because of relevance it sticks to the topic. fourth it says it was published by a collage in michigan. fifth the content is all correct i know this because i'm on a website that teach's craap and its just what i heard in class. over i definitely think its relevant

What's the craap test?

The craap test is a test designed to check the reliability of a website,
The C stands for currency, as in how current the information is, the r stands for relevance, the 1st a stands for Authority (If the author's name is in the article/website), the 2nd A is for accuracy, the p is for perspective.
For example: I tested "vox.com" (https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/12/6/18050680/video-game-addiction-gaming-disorder-who) using these strategies,
For C (Currency) this article was written in 2018, so it's fairly recent although it was published before Covid 19. I would give it a 7/10.
For relevance I would give this a 9/10, for accuracy also a 9/10 for authority the person's contact info and name was on the site so I would give it a 9/10, for perspective I would give it a 10/10 because there's no biased/emotional opinions in the article.

What is CRAAP? CRAAP stands for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. The words that stand for CRAAP is about finding if a website is trustable or not.

For example, you want to see if World Wild Life.org is trustable but you can tell if it’s trustable when you see if any information was updated. It was founded at 1961 on April 29 and when you look at that website everyday you could see some texts that say different things about saving nature and proves that it does get updated and that is called currency.

For Relevance the website needs to be related to what you’re researching or studying on. If you study on endangered animals the website would be useful but if you research on space, it would be useless. At the World Wildlife website, I can see many ways to help animals and why they’re endangered.

The next step of proving a website is trustable is Authority. You have to search the person who created the website and the history of what the publisher or organization. You search it then you found out that it was Marco Lambertini, and he owns an organization called World Wildlife which protects nature and protecting is something that’s positive so WWF would be a reliable source.

Accuracy is about finding the truth and correct information of articles. It needs to be reviewed by people many times and it also needs to be a source. WWF writes an information that Pandas eat Bamboos and sometimes small mammals, and you go check if it’s true on Wikipedia and Wikipedia has the same information as the one on the WWF site.

The final step of finding if a source is reliable is a purpose and you can find the purpose mostly on the main page and in WWF the purpose of creating the website is to inform people about species and ways to protect nature and people that are curios about learning about species would trust the website.

In conclusion you can also tell if it’s reliable if it ends with an .org .gov .edu but if it ends with .net or .com it would be a useless website. I now know how to tell if websites are reliable.

What's a craap test? Or what does it exactly does that mean? Well, let me explain! The craap test is something that can be seen as a test that checks for information from a website to see if it’s trustworthy, or non trust worthy. Now that you gotten slightly a better understanding of it, you may wonder why is it named “craap”? I wondered why it was spelt like that as well, but there’s actually a definition behind those individual letters!

C - currency: Your informations timeline. When it was released.

R - relevance: What can your information be used for?

A - authority: the source of your data. An observation method.

A - acuuarcy: statement if the information your seeing is true, or false.

P - purpose: why something was created in the first place. To inform you

Now that you know what exactly the craap test is and what it means, you can check wether if a website is trust worthy if your researching for a project, Or if it’s just to take notes!

Have you ever visited a website or read an online article and wondered "Is this information reliable and accurate"? Luckily this important question can be answered with just a simple test, called the CRAAP test. Currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose (CRAAP) are the five different aspects everyone should keep in mind while searching for reliable sources on the internet. The method the CRAAP test utilizes is coming up with a score (using the five categories) that verify if you should trust a source or not. To show how the test generally works, I'm going to use an article on worldhistory.org called "Field of Reeds (Aaru)" as an example. Let's start with the letter "C" (currency). Currency is the timeliness of the information and tests how accurate it still is at the time you're reading it. Browse the source to figure out whether it is outdated, has or hasn't been updated/revised, and whether the provided links still work. The Field of Reeds article was posted on August 20th, 2019 and the links also seemed to be working properly, so the information shouldn't be outdated. Because each category is scored out of 10, I give this article a 9/10 for currency. Next is the relevance or how well the information fits your needs. Important sub-questions to ask yourself could be "Does this relate to my main topic?" and "Is this an appropriate level for me?". In terms of relevance, the article scores a 9/10 as well because it is age appropriate, includes information about my main topic, and is acceptable for taking notes. After relevance the next part is authority. The authority of a source is where they got their information. Was it from their own knowledge, other sources, or completely made-up? The writer of the article was Joshua J. Mark, who works for the world history organization, received many awards, and helped co-found the Ancient History Encyclopedia. The website's URL ends in .org as well, so I think it deserves a 10/10. Furthermore, accuracy is the second "A" in CRAAP and revolves around the reliability and unbiasedness of the information. The information should come from a reliable source and shouldn't contain the writer's opinions and feelings. The writer has experience in the field the article is about and the information can also be verified by another source. However, I don't know if the information was reviewed and referred to, so I give it an 8/10 for accuracy. Finally, the purpose is the last part of the CRAAP test. The purpose is the reason the information is available in the first place. Have you ever visited a website or read an online article and wondered "Is this information reliable and accurate"? Luckily this important question can be answered with just a simple test, called the CRAAP test. Currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose (CRAAP) are the five key aspects everyone should remember while searching for reliable sources on the internet. The CRAAP test verifies how trustworthy a source is by utilizing a scoring method that rates it out of 50. To show how this test generally works, I’m going to demonstrate all the steps using an article on worldhistory.org called "Field of Reeds (Aaru)" .Let's start with the letter "C" (currency). Currency is the timeliness of the information and how accurate it still is at the time you're reading it. Quickly browse the source of the information to figure out if it has or hasn't been updated/revised recently and whether the links it provides still work. The article was posted on August 20th, 2019 and the links all seemed to be working properly, so the information shouldn't be outdated. Each category is given a score from 1 to 10, so with that in mind, I give this article a 9/10 for currency. Next is relevance (how well the information fits your needs). Important sub-questions to ask yourself about the relevance are “Does this relate to my main topic?” and "Is this at an appropriate level for me?". In terms of relevance, the article gets a score of a 9/10 because it is age appropriate for me, helps to answer my questions, and is acceptable for taking notes on. In addition, the authority is also extremely important when finding reliable information. The authority of a source is where the writer or creator got their information from. Was it from their own knowledge and experiences, other sources, or entirely fictional? You should aim for the for the first two sources, but the third as it will provide you with misinformation. The writer of the article was Joshua J. Mark, who works for the world history organization, received many awards, and helped co-found the Ancient History Encyclopedia. The website's URL ends in .org as well, so I think it deserves a 10/10. Furthermore, the second “A” in CRAAP represents accuracy and revolves around the reliability and unbiasedness of the information. The information should come from a reliable source and shouldn't contain the writer's opinions and feelings. The writer of the article has experience in the field he’s explaining about and the information can also be verified by numerous other sources. However, I don't know if the information was reviewed and referred to, so I give it an 8/10 for accuracy. Finally, the purpose is the last part of the CRAAP test. The purpose is the reason the information is available in the first place. On the worldhistory.org website, there is an "about us" that states that their purpose is to improve history education worldwide, which seems good. There also doesn't seem to be any biases about the purpose, so I think it gets a 10/10 again. To sum up, all the scores together add up to 46/50, which is very reliable and makes it a fantastic source of information. The letters in this acronym may vary depending on who you ask, but the concept is still the same. The way I have learned it, CRAAP stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose.
I will use the CRAAP method on a website, and rate it's reliability out of 50. I will be using it on www.science.org.au.
Let's start with Currency. The website doesn't show when the article was posted, however it says that it was last updated on February 25, 2016. It is pretty current for the topic. The links are functional as well. Because of this, I will give this website 9 points for Currency.
Second, we have Relevance. The information both relates to the topic and answers my question. However, I do not feel that the information is at an appropriate level, and it is too advanced. For every word here, there are a few questions to check to see if the website is reliable and trustworthy. I'm going to be using www.worldhistory.org/china/ as an example to see how the CRAAP test works. Let's start with checking the currency. The information on this website is up to date, the information is checked and the links should be all functional. The article is posted on December 18, 2012, which is a bit old and It didn't say it's updated, but all links in this article are functional. I would rate from one to ten, ten being the most reliable. I would rate the currency part of the website seven out of ten. Next up, moving on to the relevance part of the website. You would check to see if the information's on topic, and can you understand it all. You can check other sites to make sure the information is on topic. The website is fairly relevant, its information is definitely on topic, and I can understand all of it. I would rate it ten out of ten for relevance. The third step is to check the authority. Authority is about the publisher of the text and who wrote it. Try to google the author to check. The website has a biography of the writer and has a photo of him, his background is appropriate and clear. The URL of the website is also .org, which means the organization is non-profit. Therefore, I would give it ten out of ten for the authority part of the website. Now we will check the accuracy of the website. This is the correctness and reliability part to check; is the information all correct? At the bottom of the article, it says that all of its text is checked and reviewed for mistakes. It also says that numerous educational institutions recommend this site, including Oxford University, and has been reviewed for educational use. I'm convinced that all of the information on this website is accurate so I would give it a ten out of ten. The purpose of the website would be the last one to check, is the website opinion, fact or propaganda? Is the author's tone biased? Worldhistroy.org is an encyclopedia, the tone does not sound biased and all information in this article are facts. I would rate the purpose part ten out of ten. The final reliability score is 47/50, so it's definitely not a crap website and passed the test to be a reliable website. These are the steps to use to see if a source is crap or not.

There's many types of different tests around this world, but have you ever heard of the CRAAP test? If not, this paragraph is the thing for you! CRAAP is a test used to find out how reliable a website is and how accurate the information you are getting from it is. CRAAP stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. The CRAAP test can be used for any website and I might swell show an example with biography.com and give it a score out of 50. The website itself was published in April 2, 2014. It was last updated April 14, 2021. so I'd give the currency a 9. Relevance is used, the website answers my question and gives many different answers related to my question but also has some unrelated things that do not connect to my question and will give an 8. Authority seem well, the authors are very real and not made up, that concludes authority with a 9. Accuracy looks, everything is accurate and is true. I also double checked the same information from other websites and articles, will end it off when an 8. The purpose of this article seems to be about researching and historical information for students raging from 13-15 years old, which brings us for a 10 for the purpose. That ends off the website and article with a 44/50 which is pretty good and very accurate and sustainable and seems reliable.

So let's star with C for Currency. We need to know when it was written and does the link on the website still work. The website said that they open from 8:30 a.m. to 17:00p.m. everyday. But I don't know when they post it on the website. I give this 10 points.
Next is R for reliability. For reliability we need to know were did the author gets their information, do they provide legitimate link or citations, and last but not least can the information be verified on other sites. I know they information by teaching it online and they get their information online because they are teachers and professors in schools. They provides legitimate link citations. I don't think other site will have the information. I give this 9 points.
Next is the first A the stands for authority (of the author). The question is can we trust the author, Does the author list their name, last google them and see what makes them an expert. Yes we can trust them. The author is an education sector. I give this 10 points.
The last A stands for authority (of the organization). We need to know If we can trust the organization, is there a distinguished organization behind the website, and what is the domain. When I searched it went back to their website. I am not sure If they are a distinguished organization or not. Their domain is .cn and it means China.I give this 9 points.
The last letter P stands for purpose or point of view. we need to know does it address multiple perspective, is the author's tone objective, does it sound like a fact, and is the writing biased.I don't think it is biased. Also it is not selling anything. I give this 10 points.
The total points is 48 points. Also 48 points means it is excellent.

The URL ends with .com, but I don't really think that matters because lots of good websites have that end of URL. I would give this source an 8 out of 10 for Authority. Next, Accuracy. There is no spelling or grammar errors and they are not biased in this article. I looked up to see if the website was reliable, and it says it is, so I'll give the source another 10. Lastly, the Purpose. The purpose of the article is pretty clear which is to teach people about the planets in our solar system. I would give it a 10 for its purpose. Out of 50, all of the points add up to 47 which is "excellent". Overall, I think the CRAAP test works, and you should use it whenever you find a website you aren't sure about while researching.

Despite the coincidentally unusual name, the acronym can be quite useful when you encounter a website you are unsure of. What acronym am I talking about? CRAAP. These few letters each represent something, so by combining all of them, it helps make up the whole idea of the acronym. Starting off with the first letter, it stands for Currency. This has something to do with the time, so after you encounter this part of the method, look to see if the information has been updated, and you could also check the date of when it was published. Take this website, for example, "https://study.com". It was published/edited on October 11th, 2021, which isn't too long ago, and the information still seems current for my topic. In addition to that, the data seems really useful, because it has videos and courses along with units and titles, making the videos more clear. Because of this, I think it deserves a 10, or a 9 and a half. The next letter stands for Relevance, and this is when you want to see if the information is important for your topic. For the website I used, it did have something to do with Greek mythology, though my topic was quite specific so it had a bunch of stuff that wouldn't be needed for my topic. Due to this small problem, I would rather use another source for a research paper. It also mentioned "college", but I think its a good level for me to read. Overall, I think I would score Relevance a 7. Next up is Authority, but unfortunately for my website, it doesn't show anything about the author or source. Today in class we learned about the CRAAP test. The CRAAP test is a test to check if a website is reliable or not. The C stands for currency. The R stands for relevance. The first A stands for authority. The second A stands for accuracy. And the inquiry project I tested the CRAAP test on "nationalgeographic.org". I forgot the currency, the time posted seems no problem and it is keep on updating, so I give it a 10 out of 10. The relevance is also very good, it contains informations for all grades, so I'll give it 9/10. For the authority the author is a group and I searched it up and it is quite famous. I give 8 out of 10 for the authority. For the accuracy I give it a 7 out of 10 because it didn't have a lot of evidence to support its information. For the purpose I give it a 7 out of 10 because in the website there there are some sentences to let you donate money. After all the total score is 31 so it is at borderline acceptable area. I could use this website and research but maybe not for a lot. The CRAAP test really help me out on finding reliable sources.

What is a Craap Test? It is a test that helps you identify a website is truthful or not. These 5 letters each represent something. C stands for Currency, this means that if a website has been updating for time to time it would be up to date. R stands for Relevance, which means the state of being closely connected or appropriate. A stands for Authority, means the person who is in charge of the website, is it a person who have years of experience or just some random people post stuff on a website. The second A stands for Accuracy, which means information has to be support with evidence to prove the information is true. Lastly, P stands for Purpose, it means why is the website created and what is it for. For the Craap test I would be doing it on mrhongsclass.com. It has been updated today so I would give it a 10/10. The website is for all ages and all people, so it would get 10/10 for Relevance. The person who created this website is my class teacher Mr. Hong, so I know he is a teacher with experience, I would give 10/10 for Authority. The information on this website is decent but there isn't much evidence to prove the information, I would give the website a 8/10 since there are some videos which gives the information and evidence. Last but not least, The purpose of this website is to teach Grade 7's to write a refection on what they learn in school today, which I think is really meaningful, so I would give 10/10 for purpose. The total points is 48 which is at the excellent area, I would definitely use this website all the time. Overall, I think the Craap teat is really important to make sure the website is reliable or not, and to make sure you are getting the right information.

When you are doing research on something using the web, there is one thing you must do before going on any of the websites, and that is to check if the website is trustworthy. One way to do that is to do the CRAAP test. What is the CRAAP test you may ask? Well, it is a way to check if the website is reliable or not. Each letter have their own meaning. The letter C stands for currency, it means what time the information was uploaded onto the website. If the information was on how cars work, and it was posted in 1987 then it might not be the best information since we have better cars now than 1987. The letter R stands for relevance, it means if the website have the information you needed. If the website's title when you clicked on it said it was going to be talking about cars but instead it lead you to a page to buy their t-shirts and other things then it would not be a good website. The first A stands for authority, it means who was the author and if the author is a person you can trust. If you were researching about cars and the information was written by a 5 years old who was taught by their parents it probably would not be the best information you need. The second A stands for accuracy, it means if the information is correct of if it lies. You could check if the information is correct by looking at other websites of the same information, if they don't have the same information then it would not be the most reliable source of information. Last but not least, the letter P. P stands for purpose, it means to check what the author's purpose of the information was. If the author said cotton t-shirts are good for the environment or something and they sell cotton t-shirts on their websites then the purpose is probably just to get you to buy their t-shirts. Now I will use the CRAAP test on a website to see if it works. The website I am going to use is http://www.thedogisland.com/. First of all, currency. It didn't show when this information was posted and nothing said it was edited and revised, so I'll give this a 0/10. Secondly, relevance. it doesn't have any information I will need if I was to search about dogs it just says how much of a fun time the dogs are having on the island so I'll also give that a 0/10. Next is authority, it doesn't say who wrote the article or where they got the information from so I'll give it a 0/10 again. Now we have accuracy. No other websites aid dog island was real and even snopes confirms that it is fake so it is going to be 0/10. Last but not least, purpose. All the links worked but one link got me really interested, it was a link to their shop where you can buy t-shirts for dogs about dog island. This one is definately a 0/10. So overall the website got 0/50. CRAAP test works!

How do you know if a source is reliable or not? Well, in class Mr hong taught us about the C.R.A.A.P test. If you don’t already know what the letters stand for then I will tell you. First, we have the c. The c stands for currency and no I dont mean actual money I mean the time. For example, when was the information posted? If it was posted in like 1999 you might want to look for other websites unless history. Next, we have R. Relevance. Basically what Relevance means is like the importance of your information. So, does it relate to the topic and does it answer your question? Or is the information at an appropriate level where you can understand what your reading? Third, we have the A. The A stands for authority, authority means the source of your information. For example, who is the author of the website your on or does the URL of the website reveal anything when you look at it? After that we have another “A” which stands for accuracy. The meaning for accuracy is the reliability of the content which is like is it a source that is reliable? Can you check the information on a different website to make sure its true? Lastly, we have the P which stands for purpose. The meaning for purpose is the reason the information exsists. So does the information you’re looking at have a purpose? Is your information fact, opinion, or propaganda? And that’s what the C.R.A.A.P test means but I think we should try it on a website. The website I will be choosing is britannica.com. First, it says most the information was posted on 1768–2010 which is awhile ago so maybe we could check on a different website. Next, we have relevance. The information does relate to my topic because I am using it for my research in inquiry so yeah. Third, we have the A’s. So, the publisher is apparently Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc and the information comes from many authors. After that we have the P. The reason this imformation exsists is because it help us build our knowledge on things we might not know and also I would say it helps me to build my knowledge on my inquiry question. So, after we have explained the C.R.A.A.P test I would say C = 7/10, R = 9/10, A = 8/10, A = also 8/10, lastly P = 9/10. Which equals 41 and I think that means its a decent website. In conclusion, I think that britannica.com is a pretty good website.
