OUR NEW SELF-REGULATION WALL

Today, we worked on making a two-foot stop on a defender and then stepping around him/her to create space to score an easy lay-up. Students also did an excellent job at completing their visible thinking for 'BORN TO STAND OUT'. Not only did they use the Novel Approach reading strategies, but they were able to achieve success by synthesizing and evaluating their thinking to come up with the big idea of the poem. You are all on your road to mastery of the reading strategies! Keep up the great work!

Reading is one of the more complicated parts of the English language. But with the right strategies, it can be easy. During school, we have learned many different strategies for understanding what we are reading, but my three main ones are visualizing, making connections, and making inferences about what might happen next.

First of all, visualizing is one of the reading strategies that I have used for a long time. It comes naturally, and whenever I read a highly detailed paragraph, a 3-D movie just appears in my head. I forget what is happening around me and focus on the book I'm reading instead. There are also some times where I read an amazing part of a book and read it multiple times in order to really get it into my head.

My second strategy is making connections to what I read. This helps me understand what is happening better. If I connect to what I am reading, some things will make more sense. For example, when you use a text-to-text connection, there might be two pieces of writing that is connected to each other, and since you have seen the thing twice, it makes a lot more sense.

The last reading strategy is to make inferences while reading. If I make inferences, I can try to be a bit more careful and follow the text in order to guess what will happen later on. It will always be a surprise, but by making guesses, you can find the ending easier. When making inferences, you can also write down more of what you think instead of just following along with the text.

In conclusion, using these three reading strategies that I have, it makes reading things a whole lot simpler.

What are the Reading Strategies? How do I use them? So they are strategies to help me read, right?

Well, there are seven Reading Strategies. But what are they? You are using the reading strategies when you:
- set a purpose or purposes
- use your background knowledge and/to make connections
- monitor comprehension (make sure you understand)
- visualize what you read
- determine what is important
- make inferences (read between the lines); and,
- synthesize and evaluate

Okay, now that you know what all the reading strategies are, which ones do I personally find helpful? I know you must be thinking, why do I need to know this? Well I'm giving it to you so you have some idea of the more common and easy to use strategies. Also I have to include this because it was in the success criteria. Anyways, the three strategies that I find most helpful are:
- set a purpose or purposes
- use my background knowledge and/to make connections
- visualize what I read

Why do I use those three more often? Well I set a purpose so that I can check what I'm supposed to do. It's like a schedule that I follow. I use my background knowledge to make connections because it helps me have a deeper understanding of the content. My connections allows me to understand what I'm reading on a personal level. When I visualize it also helps me understand the content a bit more. When you read the word monster, what do you do? I picture a purple, fuzzy monster. It has one giant eye in the center of its forehead, green fuzzy polka dots, and has miniature T-rex arms and feet. No legs though. Kind of like Mike from Monsters Inc.

Reading strategies can help people on reading and check the wrong things about their essay and try to improve. I think the reading strategies really does help me on my understandning of the paragraph or certain word. There's three reading strategies that really help me on my reading.

The first reading strategies that I am going to talk about is: use my BK to make connection. First of all, what is making connection? Making connection can help me connect myself to the story, and have a better understanding of the story. For example, if the story is talking about apple, I can make a lot of connection to that because I eat apple every day.

The second strategies is: purpose! WHat is purpose means in the reading strategies? It means to reminds us what should we do. Make purpose is really important to me because sometimes I forget what is the reading strategies, so the purpose can reminds me what is the reading strategies and what should I do in this sentences.

Reading is a very simple word but it has a very complicated process. Reading comprehension is the ability to understand the meaning of the text. I learned a lot of helpful strategies that helped my understanding on what I read. Making connections, inferences and visualizing are three strategies I prefer to use.

Why do we make connections when reading? The first strategy I use is making connections. Making connections help to get a better understanding of things I’m reading. When I connect to what I’m reading, I will understand things better. That is because when you have experienced, seen, heard or read something before that connects to something in the book, you will have a personal and deep connection and understand the text better. The more your connected to what your reading you will understand more.

The second strategy I use is making inferences. Inferences are what we figure out based on our experiences. Inferences appear when we can see something happening. The more its connected to our own personal experiences the more we will understand the text. For example, let’s say your reading a book about someone playing hide and seek. The person is in a room with a closet, a table and some chairs. You can connect with this because you have played hide and seek before. You could infer that the person is hiding in the closet because according to your own experience or background knowledge the chance of getting found hiding in the closet is smaller than getting found sitting on a chair. ( maybe )

The third strategy I use is visualizing. Visualizing is when you create pictures in your mind as you read and it can be like making a movie in your mind about what you are reading. When I visualize It makes me feel more connected to the text and it creates more personal experience.

In conclusion, when I use these three strategies when I’m reading I understand better.

Reading is an excellent source of entertainment, and there are many genres that bring satisfaction to certain people who read them. But how do you ensure that you understand everything you are reading? This is where the reading strategies are applied.

The main reading strategies taught in Novel Approach lessons are setting a purpose, making connections and inferences, visualizing, monitoring your comprehension, synthesizing and evaluating, and lastly, determining what's important. The three primary strategies that I use the most frequently to aid me in getting a thorough understanding of what I am reading are setting a purpose, monitoring my comprehension, and making visualizations/connections/inferences.

To begin with, I always set purposes before I read, no matter what genre and for what duration of time. Setting a purpose doesn't necessarily help me understand what I'm reading, but does help me focus. To put it another way, think of it as goal setting for reading. Each purpose is a goal. For example, let's say I set the goal "read for personal enjoyment." Then, I would read specifically for that purpose; after I finished, I would set another purpose. Setting purposes when reading is extremely useful to me.

In addition, I also constantly monitor my comprehension. Think about artificial intelligence and such tools of the like which correct your spelling, grammar, e.t.c mistakes. This is comparable to what I do. However, there are several major differences. First of all, I am not a robot, and secondly, I do not read just to point out the conventional mistakes in the story (there are editors and proofreaders for that). On the other hand, although I do not review for typical writing mistakes, I do monitor for sentences, phrases, and paragraphs that do not make sense to me. In short, monitoring comprehension is checking for places you do not understand.

Some ways I monitor my comprehension are by using a dictionary (if I am provided with one or if there is one nearby), asking a friend/parent/teacher (if there is one present) and rereading and reading ahead. If there is a word I do not know the meaning of, rereading and reading ahead is very useful as it helps me somewhat understand what context the word is used in, which therefore allows me to assume a moderately accurate definition of the words.

The last set of strategies I use is making visualizations/connections/inferences. Mr. Hong once said: "We don't use our eyes when we visualize." Visualizing is exactly like this quote, no matter how cringy it sounds. Visualization does not work unless you have sufficient, descriptive details surrounding a certain topic. Also, you do not make use of your eyes, because it is an imagined mental image rather than an actual virtual image.
I make connections only when there is a certain subject I have Background Knowledge on. While I am connecting, I also often visualize my thoughts. These two strategies are interlinked and both help me understand what I am reading by picturing it in my head. Lastly, making inferences (educated guesses you make foreshadowing what you assume will occur next based on evidence from the text) also helps me understand what I read since it kind of tests me if I understood what I previously read in order to infer what'll happen next.

Finally, all these strategies I use also combines with the other strategies I don't use as frequently to make one big strategy: determining what's important/synthesizing and evaluating. Confused about this quadruplet of words? A simplified version of what I just wrote means analyzing the writing and looking for pieces of text relevant to the big idea/main message of the writing. This is like trying to provide a brief recapitulation of the book using the information dubbed important (according to myself). This really allows me to understand exactly what I read.

Reading has shown to require quite a lot of comprehensive skills just to simply understand the context of what you might be reading. If one is failing to gain a proper feeling of a book, it will negate the entire purpose of reading. Different reading strategies are what helps the reader understand the messages and contexts of the book. During the short amount of time we have been in school, we have been taught several different competencies of reading. We have been given multiple different songs, stories, and poems to help us practice our reading competencies. We have been slowly learning different techniques to further our understandings. Here are a small amount that I find especially useful.

I used to read a lot, but when I read books that were driven by the images in your head such as Harry Potter, I couldn't understand what something might look like. However, when I learned to visualize, I re-read some of the old books from old to visualize exactly what I was reading. I was able to see these clear images in my head, and I was able to understand the book at a new level. Visualizing helped me understand the worlds that the books were aiming to show, and I was able to enjoy reading more than I already did.

Different stories will always present you with a word, phrase, or secret message that you might not understand. When something such as this happens, I try to monitor my comprehension by asking people close to me, or just simply looking it up on the web. By monitoring my comprehension, I am able to understand the phrase I was looking for, and I am able to understand more about the book itself. Many books contain deep mysteries that make you think hard, but you can monitor your comprehension by asking for different opinions and then try to come to a conclusion.

When reading books with a big emphasis on build up, it helps to make inferences to show that you both understand what is happening in the book, and that you can use your BK to make said inferences. Making inferences helps you understand where the story might be going, or it could help uncover something that was never explained. Inferring is a good way to further your general understanding pf the book and characters, and it could also be the answer to an unsolved mystery. Inferring has helped me many times in comprehending the contents of a book, which made the time I spent reading better.

In conclusion, there is an array of reading strategies to help you understand a book better, and each one of them serves a common role of helping the reader.

Reading is the most important things to do from since humans existed. Since we were basically apes in caves, we were using a type of reading. They painted images to tell stories and other stuff, and you basically "read" them. Humans used a system of words so they can communicate, while they evolved. A lot of that consists reading. Imagine it without reading. You can't send letters, you can't read the par, and don't even think about chatting on hangouts. Words and reading were really important. We use them every single day.

Sometimes reading can get really annoying and very difficult. That can happen when the story gets hard to understand, having tough words, and could get really boring in some points. When I get stuck in a book or a passage, I always use strategies to help me understand it.

First of all, I always make connections. For instance Bob, he gets to eat ice cream. I can make a connection to that, because that I just had ice cream today. That was a text to self connection. It's called that because you are taking the text and connecting it to yourself and what you've experienced. There is also text to text, which you connect it to other text. Text to world is used when the text relates to what's happening to the world. Sometimes, we use text to media, from the text to something you watched before, but we usually use it as text to self.

The second way I use to help me read is to monitor my comprehension. I us this to help me because it can understand things I don't understand. If I don't understand a word, then I can ask a friend, a teacher, or technology. I can also read ahead and behind if I'm stuck. For example I don't understand the word "grin" so I ask a teacher. They will probably help me. Or if the sentence is, "His grin made his teacher laugh." then It probably means to make something good.

Finally, the last thing I do to help me understand the story is to set a purpose. You usually do this at the very beginning of the paragraph. This helps you read because you can see why you can read. Like, why would you read without a purpose? For fun? Nope. That's a purpose. Reading the thing without a purpose is like looking at the words with thinking about it. You won't know anything about the story after you are done "reading". You set a purpose by thinking why you are reading. You can also write it down. For instance you can say for information. Then you can read to understand. Or you can say for fun, or for connections etc.

Overall, reading strategies help you a lot to help you understand the story. They are really important and should be used to help you read.

HOW DO I READ THIS?
OH! I know! I can use the reading strategies that work best for me!
Here are the top three strategies and how they help me.
First is visualizing, even before Mr.Hong showed me this I have been doing this. It helps me know what's happening better. The second strategy I use is monitoring comprehension. I ask questions to help my understanding. The last strategy I use is making connections. When I make strong connections I will not forgot what I read, and for me I always forget stuff.

@ Raymond - Great job! I really liked your hook and how you grabbed my attention to read this. Though, there can be a few improvements that can be made. First, make sure you add a small conclusion, even if it is one sentences long. It helps close and sum up your writing. Second, give some examples to your points. This will help make your writing more detailed. Other than that, I really enjoyed reading this!

Reading isn’t hard for a lot of people, because we should all be able to read something. But it is challenging for us to fully understand what we’re reading. For example, have you ever read a book and be like: what did I just read? Well, I’m going to tell you I’ve done that for...... like a thousand times. It is absolutely unhelpful when you’re really trying so hard to understand the concept story. So today I am going to share some knowledge I learned from the novel approach lessons. The main strategies I used to help me understand what I’m reading.

The first one would be to set a purpose, this might sound a bit useless, but it never is useless. Like a lot of you, I’ve never thought about setting a purpose before. I usually read when I'm asked to, or when I’m willing to read something for fun. Soon I started realizing how am I reading if I don’t even know why am I reading. I should’ve used this strategy early, so then I’ll be more focused, and clear about the purpose of me reading something.

The second favorite strategy is to make connections, this way you’ll really get into the story. Because you’re connecting to yourself, maybe it is something you’ve experienced or done before, tasted or felt before? It is pretty magical that connections could help reminds you something that you forgot about really long ago. Since you’re connecting what you’re reading to yourself, you’ll memorize the story sense for a long period of time.

In addition, I think monitor my comprehension is also really important. This is a huge part of reading because that’s how we learned, if we don’t monitor our comprehension, we’ll March on the same spot while everybody learns. When monitoring comprehension, we're supposed to make sure we understand the story well. We use strategies like asking people questions, using a dictionary and other strategies to support us to solve our questions to the story.

In conclusion, I think all the strategies we learned in novel approach lessons are pretty useful. These are just some of my favorites ones to use. Furthermore, there are visualizing, inferences, synthesizing and evaluating, every strategy is being connected to support us reading.

These strategies help us understand what we're reading and process them into an easier way for each person to understand. I have a few personal favourite strategies: VISUALIZATION, MONITORING COMPREHENSION and MAKING CONECTIONS.

Let's start with visualization. Now, the visualization process is to use the text and information from the book/article/ect. your reading to get a visual in your head. This means that you can see what the text is describing in your head without using your eyes. Every time I visualize, I can see what the text is talking about and it's pretty cool. I can see even more details when there is more detailed text.

I'm not typically a person who reads day in and out, but when I do read, I use a few strategies. before I learned the reading strategies this year, I didn't know which strategy I was using and how I was using them. While I was learning about all the different strategies throughout this school year, I watched as my reading and writing ability drastically changed.

The first strategy I use is visualizations. to me, I learn best when I see it done by example. when I read, I have a little movie running in my head. This is probably why I prefer movies over books. Visualization makes the story more engaging and what I like to do is relate it to my life. I'll think of the characters as people in my life and that makes the story much more enjoyable.

The second strategy I use is using my background knowledge to make connections. Just like visualizations, I use connections so I have a more engaging experience with the text. When I can relate to the text, it feels real and you really embrace the story.

The last strategy I use is making inferences. Just like the two other strategies, they make me more engaged. I really like connecting to the text. Inferences make me challenge my background knowledge and makes me think back to the beginning. This helps me understand the text better and helps me find the big idea in the end.

In conclusion, I'm not a huge bookworm, but I still enjoy a good book every once in a while. I'm glad that I learned these strategies and I hope that they carry out to future classes.

Reading every day is a very important part of every school boards curriculum, and this is because when you read more often you are developing reading skills and writing skills like how to use certain word or phrases in certain areas of writing and if you read more every day that means that you can read and understand what you reading more and more quicker, which is very LEARNING health!! *wink wink*

But before we read a chapter, picture, informal and many more types, but the first thing you should do if you haven't, you need to set a purpose for why you are reading this book!

Some common reading strategies I use most of the time for example are:

#1 To get a feel
I read a lot of books only because I want to feel the power of the book so that I can almost taste the learning.

#2 To ask questions
I read to ask questions about the story and I also want I to be able to get a good answer so that I can remember the whole story, and I also like talking and discussing things often about life, political stuff, trade and innovation!

#3 To make connections with B.K
I read to make connections with the story because then I can remember this story in my heart, and to use my B.K for something very important in my learning is a privilege.

Reading is a very important skill to learn. It is not only to be able to read the words, it is about to be able to understand and comprehend it. This is when our novel approach strategies that we have been learning for months come into use. In school, we practice using poems and short stories. In reality, most of us have already incorporated these strategies when we read novels and chapter books. There is no doubt we’ll be experts at reading by the end of the year. Here are a few of the strategies that I use most often and that help me the most.

First, I would say that the most important strategy for me is monitoring my comprehension. When we really need help at understanding something, this strategy really comes to use. There can be many ways we monitor our comprehension. Some of which include slowing down, stopping to think, rereading, reading ahead, marking down confusing parts, asking peers/teachers, and finding help from a dictionary or online. No matter which way we monitor our comprehension, it will always be helpful. It is up to us to decide what will help us better understand.

Second, I also think that visualizing is very effective. We all visualize when we read. Everyone does, and we learn it all by ourselves. Visualizing is basically creating a imaginary picture in your head. It helps us see the details more and remember parts from the context better. For example, when we read Forbidden City, everyone visualizes. We visualize pictures of the setting, the characters, and even the brutal massacre. We can visualize the room that Alex woke up in and Tiananmen Square where the protest were. This puts the story into our head and gives us a better sense of details.

Last but not least, we have making connections. Making connections is a key part to reading, as it helps us connect to the content. This lets us relate and connect to the story, which will certainly improve our understanding. For example, if a character’s grandpa passed away, you may have a connection of it. Whether it can be losing a relative, your grandparents, your family, or even a precious belonging, we can all somehow relate to the character. We can put ourselves into the position of the character to think. There are also many other types of connections other than personal/text to self connections. For example, text to world and text to text. Text to world is when you relate to something in the real world that is happening. For example, we can connect “Beautiful” to bullying. On the other hand, text to text is basically connecting to another film, video, book, or any text you have seen or read before. It doesn’t matter which types of connections you make, but as long as you make sure that they are meaningful to you and not random connections. Everyone has their own background knowledge, so everyone will have their own unique connections.

In conclusion, this is how we read in division 2. My favourites are making connections, visualizing, and monitoring my comprehension. I hope that we can carry what we’ve learnt about reading from this year, all the way until we are adults. These are certainly extremely helpful skills to be learning.

Reading is hard for some people and some people think reading is easy for them.

The reading strategy is setting a purpose. I like to read to get a feel. Getting a feel get me interested to the book. Setting a purpose will help me know what I are reading.

The second strategy is make corrections or BK. In some books I make corrections that happen to me. It reminds me about someone else in this situation instead of me.

The last strategy is ask questions. Some books I read have difficult words or sentences, I don’t understand. For e.g. the book I got for my caring aunts. Ask questions making me curious.

In conclusion, the reading strategies help me improve my reading. Also they are useful.

Reading skills and strategies can be learned. Effective readers use strategies to understand what they read. There are three strategies where I often use every time I read.

First and foremost is asking questions, with this kind of strategy the reader ask themselves questions as they read to make sense of the text. This is one of my personal favorites among all the strategies because through asking questions I am able to search for answers or deeper understanding. Once a reader is asking questions as he reads is evident that the reader has a purpose in reading.

Next is by thinking to read. The teachers verbalize aloud while reading a selection orally. This kind of strategy help students learn to monitor their thinking as they read and improves their comprehension. Good readers monitor their understanding by rereading a sentence and clarify. Then students learn to provide the answers to the questions as the teacher leads the thinking.

Lastly, making inferences wherein it is an idea that came from evidence and reasoning. This will help students improve their skills in drawing conclusions and making inferences.

Therefore, using these three strategies not only help and make the students to be better readers but enable them to focus on the text which improves understanding and making sense of what they read.

Reading, again and again…… Somehow, I am wondering why do we have to read. Is reading really help me. Of course! No one will disagree. However, how to read? Of course is to use your eyes and read, but how? Reading is easy, simple. Reading is an enjoyment to me. It is significant to me. To read, it is easy.

Reading is an extremely important way to learn. Reading is easy, it is simple. However, what if you don’t know what the idea of this book is about? Wondering what does this word means. Thinking about what does this sentence is about. This really makes me think of “Novel Approach”. I can tell, it is extremely important for reading, and it is significant to me. To read, you need strategies. Because I believe that no one will understand the book without using any strategies.

This might be easy for you, but I really have to learn more about this. My main three strategies which I always use when I am reading.

Firstly, to get a feel. Maybe I am kind of different from other students or classmates. When I am reading…... Actually, I don’t literally have purposes when I am reading. I read when I have time. I am definitely not a book worm. I won’t read for read. I know it is not really making sense, but it did to me. I read when I got nothing to do, when I am boring, nothing to do, I read. And that’s the reason that my main strategy is to get a feel of reading. Sometimes you don’t really want to know anything about the book or what the author wants to tell you about. Just get a feel of it. Just feel like you just want to enjoy reading, and that’s the main point of how I read.

Secondly, to monitor my comprehension. Do you know what really bothers me? The “unreadable” words. Sometimes you will feel like that word will be really important to this passage or will tell you the big idea. What you have to do is, search up the dictionary or Google. Actually, this really bothers me, but that is the same reason why it is important. Sometimes you will just mess up the big idea if you don’t know the words. Furthermore, ask questions. This is the most important point in “monitor my comprehension”, and it is in the Big 6 principles. That could already tell the importance of it. Asking questions is actually what you always do. Just do it to monitor your comprehension. I could tell it must help me.

The last strategy is, to make inferences. I know it is kind of weird to put this strategy in the end. However, it is still important though. Have you ever read something is absolutely not making sense? If it doesn’t make sense. Make inferences, sometimes of the book is not making sense. That means I have to think more, deepen my understanding. Somehow, you will discover how this will help you. Perhaps, making inferences can help you to find the big idea too.

Reading is significant to me, to everyone, to the world. The reason is, when you read more, you will learn more. And that’s why the Learning Never Stops! Reading is actually an enjoyment to me. Sometimes, just read and enjoy!

People say that one phrase could have a thousand meanings.

Reading can be more interesting than it seems. Personally, I prefer reading online stories but reading books are also very interesting. I'm just more used to online books. Of course, when you read, you will need to use certain strategies to help you understand and get a feel of what you're reading. I'm going to be talking about three of them. One of them I use is that I like to turn on music as I read. Not just any music though. I turn on music that goes with what's happening in the story. For example, if it's getting to an intense moment, I'll put on intense music. If the people are going to a rock concert, I'll put on some rock. It really helps you get a feel. My second stradegy is to read allowed. Reading allowed does not only help me focus, it also allows me to get sucked in to whatever I'm reading. I would give certain things different voices or read with emotions (I hope you understand what that means). The final strategy is to visualize. With the help of these past two strategies, visualizing is a lot easier. As long as you get a real feel and get really sucked in, it's so much easier to visualize. Sometimes, you don't even realize you're doing it.

So that's how I like to read. I love using these strategies because they really do help me a lot when I'm reading and I hope I can inspire others with these strategies too.

Reading strategies are nice to use, and they help me with whatever I’m reading.

I always use reading strategies or at least try to use a couple when reading. One strategy that I always use is “setting a purpose.” THATS the most important and more useful strategy. It helps me see what I should be looking for in my story. For example if my purpose was “to get a feel,” I’d be reading the story to try and get a feel of what the character might be feeling. You don’t have to set one purpose, you can set as many as you want! You probably don’t want to set ten or something crazy like that.

The next ready strategy I’d use is setting connections, and using my BK. I always try to connect with the story, but sometimes there might not be anything to connect to. Connections I have are usually with myself. There are other connections like “text to world,” “text to text,” or the one I use most offen, “text to self.” I do use all those connections, but sometimes it’s harder for me to connect the story to the world. BK is something I always use and it helps me make a deep connection within the story. It also helps if the story’s about something similar that happened to you.

Last but not least I like to monitor my comprehension. What i mean by that is if I don’t understand something, I do something about it. If I don’t understand a word, I can ask someone or reread it to see how they use it in a sentence. Monitoring my comprehension really helps me get the bigger idea of the story, as same as all the other story’s,

After explaining all the strategies I normally use, I will use them more offen so I can get the BIG IDEA of the whole story!

The first one I mostly use is “ reread because I sometimes when I read I don’t understand it and try to get an idea of it migh means and I also reread because so I know if I miss something because sometimes I read to fast and don’t even know what I just said. Ask a neighbor I also ask my neighbors of what it might means and because they might probably read more than me and might know more than me and most of the people know more than because they probably been here longer than me. I sometimes ask teachers but not most of the time only sometimes because I’m that person that is most of the time shy and it mostly happens when I’m in a new school and a new student which I understand. I also just don’t have 3 but I have 1 more which is new your devices which is very helpful to us because technology has change so much from then to now the difference are very clear and understanding. I prefer devices over dictionary because when you use a dictionary you have to go to the first letter of the word and then find it but then in devices it only takes a couple of steps then your done.
