READING STRATEGY: Visualizations

Tomorrow, we will be going to the Orpheum to watch the VSOs Greatest Hits! Click here for more information. We have many students in our classes who are gifted in the arts. This will give everyone an opportunity to see, hear, and feel the amazing talents of talented musicians. Perhaps it will motivate some others to seek out new passions? Perhaps it will feed the fire that drives your passion for music?

IMPORTANT: Bring your compass card and a lunch for the field trip tomorrow. For those of you who haven't returned your forms, if you don't return them tomorrow, you will not participate tomorrow.

1.) READING: 30 minutes

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned a new reading strategy. You learned the importance of visualizations and how it help you deepen your understanding of written text.
We practiced the chant, 'We don't use our eyes, when we visualize!" I know how much you love my cheers, chants, and dances! ;-)
I want you to do a visualization activity. based on your lesson today.
Thinking back to the David Bouchard poem today....

What I think of the predator is the wolf. In my mind, I first see a panicking deer, trying to hide. It knows there's a wolf around here. If the wolf catches it, it will eat the deer. The deer gets more panicked. It could already hear the wolf sniffing it's way towards it. Then the deer saw a hole. It was n ordinary hole, but maybe, just maybe, the wolf can't get it. It might just be able to squish in there, and the wolf will be angrily standing there angry, trying to get in the hole, or maybe it wouldn't know, and be discombobulated. Just maybe it could hide in that - "GRRR..." And everything goes black. Then, in another picture in my mind, I see a wolf smelling a ton of animals, from cows to sheep to deer etc. the animals are scared, because the wolf smelled out their prey, which is the animal itself, and it knows that once qa wolf found its prey, it's not leaving until it gets it.

Oh My Gosh! The cringe is real!!

Today, in school, we learned an exciting new reading strategy: visualization. He taught us a saying that he made up to help us remember to visualize. We were then given a poem by award-winning Canadian author David Bouchard and were instructed to apply our visualization skills to it. In this paragraph, I will tell you what I visualized.

When I first heard that the thing/animal had a keen sense of smell, I thought of bears and wolves. Then, I saw the line "ruler of the north." Using my background knowledge (BK), I was able to conclude that the north was the Arctic, and this led me to think that the thing/animal was a polar bear.

One of the reasons why I thought it was a polar bear was because it fed on moose and deer, and I thought, that's what polar bears eat. So I decided it was a polar bear. When I imagined this in my brain, I saw a pack of wolves, along with some polar bears attacking the deer and lots of blood-stained snow and guts lying everywhere. Quite disgusting.

However, when I read that the animal/thing hunts at night, I started wondering if polar bears were nocturnal. I thought for a while and remembered that they aren't, but wolves are. I visualized a pack of wolves stalking their prey on a moonlit night.

In summary, I think that the 'mystery' animal was either a wolf or a polar bear. I learned a lot about visualization today and don't forget:
"We don't use our eyes when we visualize"-Mr. Hong

Could it be a bear... Can it be a bear... It has to be a bear!!!

Today an interesting activity that we did was had to do with visualization. The activity though was visible thinking and so far every time we do visual thinking we have learnt a new reading strategy each time. When I first read the poem I did not really under stand it but I used different strategies like rearding and stoping and thinking. A few other strategies I used are, making connections, discussed it with my table group. My purposes were: get a feel, monitor compressions and make connections.

After lots of thinking and visualizing and talking with my table group I came up with the conclusion that it was a bear. One other animal that I had in mind was a wolf until the poem said “from the tree tops” and I know that wolves can’t climb trees and when I visualized a Wolf climbing a tree it cringes me because I visualized the wolf’s finger nails breaking off. I also thought it might be birds at the beginning until lots of facts proved me wrong. For example. Scent is my strongest and at the tree tops and so on.

Today, we did a very interesting activities about how to visualize in your mind.('We don't use our eyes, when we visualize!").

When I read some creature about some animals has good sense of smile, it always reminds me of Bears. Bears are believed to have the most robust sense of smell of all animals on the planet. Bears use this keen sense of smell to find food and mates, avoid danger, and also keep track of cubs in the wild.
Fish and young moose are all bears and wolves food. When I read this sentence, I visualize blood. Why I visualized blood? Because when I heard some kinds of those sentence, I see( in my brain) some animals( bears, wolves, lion) are hunting other animals( moose, deer, salmon) and after they hunted, they eat it them, I think it is disgusting, so, I visualize the blood. It hunted at night. This sentence reminds me of wolves because wolves walk gently to hunt other animals at night.
In conclusion, I used all my background-knowledge, I think it is wolves to bear.

What I thought about this, and saw in my head was a monkey at first. When I read it at first I thought it was a monkey because of what it said about treetops. Then I realized that it wasn’t about that because I looked at it more carefully. I realized that it had more information about where it traveled and how it got there. Then I realized it wasn’t a monkey. Monkeys do not go in the tundra (lol). Then thought about it and thought it was a wolf because of what it said. Now I think it is a wolf from the description it says.

It might be something else, but we will never know (we probably someone already looked it up and yelled out the answer lol). Hopefully it is a wolf from my background knowledge of what a wolf is. :)

Today we did a really fun activity during novel approach lesson, we read one of the poems by David Bouchard. Our job is to guess what the poem is talking about by visualizing pictures in our mind.
As I read the poem, the first hint I got is “having a good sense of smell.” I visualized where a bunch of dogs finding food by smelling them? Because it’s common sense that dogs got good noses.
The next hint I got is from the part where says “the leader of the forest.” I changed the thought of dogs right away because I think dogs aren’t that strong compared to other animals in the forest. So I started to think about the animal’s leader in the forest, which means animals that own most of the power in the forest. Such as tigers and lions? Because I know that kings and queen in the animal kingdom.
Here it comes the next hint“ it usually comes out hunting in nights.” I visualized the wolves, standing on cliffs and howling because that’s what wolves usually do.
The final hint was “it eats deer and moose” I’m more confirm about the guess of wolves. Because there’s isn’t many animals that can eat deer, don't most of the deer got huge body size? But wolves seems to eat deer because it's strong and it got a really good ability for hunting.

So my final guess is wolves since it fits everything and is the closest guess I can make.

In todays lesson, I have learned a new reading strategy visualizations.
visualizations means the formation of a mental image of something. Today Mr.Hong use the poem made up by David Bouchard, and ask us to do the connection. And find out witch animal is it talking about. In my opinion I think it should be a wolf, because there is a part in the poem that says "I don't just hunt in the forest On a moonlit, quiet night Where the gentle breeze might tell me Of a meal that's lost or hiding." and that make me visualize a wolf that is trying to smell the prey.

Today we did visualizing what we read. We had to learn a corny chant: we don't use our eyes when we visualize. when I read something about it has a very good scent of smell, I thought it was a dog. But then I read it hunts, I thought it was a wolf. Then I visualized wolfs hunting animals, blood was splattered everywhere. After that I read something about them climbing trees, so I thought I was not a wolf because it can't climb trees. I thought it maybe is a bear. A bear has all of above.

Total darkness, with only the faint light of the moon to guide the poor deer. Suddenly, out of a bush, something leaped out. Seconds later, only the dead body of the deer lay on the grass.

Try to visualize that in your head, and you'll get a pretty good idea of what I was thinking when I read the poem. Today we did a reading activity-visualizing. When I read the first part of the poem, I thought of a penguin, then I thought *WAIT, PENGUINS DON'T LIVE IN THE JUNGLE!!!!*. The more I read, the more sure I was that it was something like a cheetah, lion, or wolf. I visualized many things (including that deer thing), and I read over and over until I was sure it was a wolf. Based on my background knowledge, wolves has a great sense of smell, they hut at night and they live in a lot of places. So my final guess was...........................HAMSTER!!!! JK, it was wolf.

Nobody knows for sure, but I am 99%-19% sure that it's a wolf. We'll find out tomorrow......and attend the funeral for the deer (RIP DEER).

Today we did a visualizing activity and I vividly saw images in my head. At first, I had no idea what it was so I started visualizing the habitats. I saw the deserted tundra blowing fluffy snow all around. Then I imagined the soggy rainforest with a whistling sound. I still had no clue of what this organism was. I continued to think of the Rocky Mountains and many other places. I drifted off into my thought thinking, "what could this possibly be?" I then saw that it could smell something miles away. At this point, I thought it was either a bear or wolf. My final decision was a wolf it made more sense in the bigger picture.

There is a purpose in visualization, whether it can be to predict what possible outcomes an event can cause or just for pleasure. In this case, we visualize today to get a better understanding and comprehension of what we are reading. You may not be realizing it, but almost everyone visualize when they read.

Today, we read a poem written by David Bouchard, a famous award-winning Canadian author. We were required to guess the thing being described in the poem, using our visualization and inferencing skills. Here is what I visualized when reading this piece of writing:

A hungry wolf is waiting for its prey in the dark, black night. The moon shines bright and white at the wolf. Despite the fact that animal’s are sleeping and quiet, the impatient wolf was able to find them using his strong senses. When the poem mentioned about it’s amazing ability to smell its prey, I imagined the wolf sniffing and trying to maneuver its way to the prey. When the wolf spots the deer, it slowly approaches it and leaps onto it. Even though the deer was fast enough to dodge its attack, it still wasn’t fast enough to race against the wolf. Consequently, what was left in my mind was filled with terrifying pictures of the wolf eating it. I won’t go into detail for that part.

In conclusion, being able to visualize is a skill that is important everywhere in life, not only while reading. I was able to visualize the poem’s content and had a better understanding of it at the end. I will continue to practice visualizing skills to further improve my reading skills.

Blood. On white snow. The carcass of a dead deer lying in the middle of a field full of paw prints. That’s what I pictured, a dead deer lying in the middle of and smooth field. I’m pretty sure it’s late at night or early in the morning because I’m the sky there was a dark blanket that covered up the moon and the stars. Somewhere in the darkness there are multiple pairs of glowing eyes, hidden away behind the trees. It’s snowing, like a light drizzle of rain, but it’s snow.

I know that this is kind of unbelievable because it feels, just, really made up. And it is! Remember dear reader, I visualized this as I was reading the poem. Most of the time when I see or hear something unusual my mind makes up “interesting” pictures. Like the one I described in the intro. My imagination very, very wild. An example from school was when Mr. Hong was reading the spooky stories on Halloween. In my head it was ten times worse. It wasn’t very fun walking down a dark, depressing, and lonely hallway. Now that I think of it. there is an added little girl quietly singing...... Which wasn’t there before.

Ooh it lives in the Rocky Mountains.What is it? A bear? A wolf?

In my mind, I see a scared deer from a creature. I see lots of blood and scars. What could it be? What kind of animal could it be?

In my opinion, I think that it is a bear. Bears are vegetarians but still eat moose and deer. Also bears live in the Rocky Mountain. That why I think that it is a bear.

What lerks around in the dark of the night? Maybe a wolf pack maybe a bear. What I visualized was a bear looking for food, a grizzly bear tearing apart a deer. A boat of hunters following a bear in a canoe.

On a frosty winter night the full moon appears, and the sound of it’s soilders scare off the most fearsome hunters in the world, and those soilders are meat eating creatures and the sight of fresh red blood covering 2 meters is a deer and that deer had a quick death from a cut to the windpipe the deer instantly died!
And only the most savage creatures would do this and this means there are more dead bobies to recover across these 400 achers and I saw the mountain and forest’s being scouted out by those soilders and they have powerful nostrils that can sense the presents of a deer 400 meters away and that is amazing and terrifying!
This is the ANIMAL WE CALL the KING OF NORTH AND SOUTH, forest, mountain and Arctic!

And we call this a WOLF

CRACK, a stick breaks and two glowing eyes stare as the cold wind brush along your face. Your scared and heart drops you fell like life over on the mountain you shouldn't have gone. The night was coming and the darkness was arriving but this animal you see is starving. You carefully back away as quiet as you can, you try to get your spray and then it comes out the shadows. The thick skin and sharp claws are terrifying, aloud yell is what you and this wolf jumps on you. The claws digging in your skin and fear running threw your blood but as night begin the closer death is. Ahooooo, from a wolf and the monster on your chest runs away with a swoosh.

@Sameer, OOOOF. Your post is very descriptive, so good job! But it was kind of hard to understand because of the grammatical mistakes and spelling mistakes. An example of this would be in the sentence when you said, “Your scared and your heart drops you fell like life over on the mountain you shouldn’t have gone.” Though I think you may have wanted to say, “You’re scared and your heart rate drops. You feel like your life is over, wasted on this trip to the mountains. You shouldn’t have gone.” I feel like this is what you meant but I may be mistaken. I like that you write like the author does in the book I’m reading. Again, good job!
