THURSDAY: Anti-Bullying Movement

Shane Koyczan -To this Day Project

We started the day with some Language Arts. We watched the video 'To This Day' by Shane Koyczan, which inspired all of us enough to write about it. The video is about bullying, and many of us have experienced bullying in some way, shape, or form. Whether we were bystanders or victims. We also started taking photos for our 'Day in the Life of Me' projects, and finished off the day by starting our 'Happy Dances' for the video we're making. 1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: (SHOW ALL WORK)

Pick 5 stocks and add up their prices on paper. Check with a calculator.
Take your most expensive stock and subtract the price of the least expensive stock from it. Check with a calculator.
Complete worksheet (You will receive this tomorrow)

2.) ART:

You all have your criteria sheets. Start taking creative photos for your 'A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ME' projects.
You will share some of them with the class tomorrow. Feel free to make a quick presentation and post a link to it here so you can get some feedback from your classmates.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

The anti-bullying movement has been going strong in Canada for a number of years.
After seeing the Shane Koyczan - To This Day Project, write about any connections you have to anything that you saw. Your post is not limited to simply this video, but feel free to draw from your personal connections to this video.

When I was in kindergarten when I lived in England, my whole class would sort of bully me except for 1 student which was a girl. Even my teacher would blame me when I had never done it, and I just got this connection from the video since it has been hiding in the back on my head. My opinion is to be yourself, not a different characteristic.

It started when I first went to that school and they thought they were cool and awesome, one of the kids thought I was a nobody or something and the other just did it for fun. I think 2 of them called me a loser but but the bullying stopped in about 1 week.

And also, I was never the bully. I was the bullied. By the time I moved to Canada I decided to not be the bully since I was bullied. In my old school before I moved here I actually made good friends with my whole entire class but then my family and I had to move since we needed a bigger house, then we moved here and I made more friends. And I keep this as a rule to myself, Not to be the bully, and not to be bullied.

Macklemore isn't gay, I don't really think he was called that when he was young, Macklemore is slightly guilty of using gay people as a accessory to make himself look better in the eyes of people. I'd recommended that you do find someone who is a better representation of the LGBT+ community.

No, in the song he thought he was gay because he did something other then sports, saying he could draw. I get that he was trying to draw Attention to the issue but he isn't doing a very good job with it. It's slightly insulting to the gay community to have him making money off our struggles. And he has a girlfriend, so no, he isn't in fact gay.

People are called gay all the time and sometimes it sticks and it's like having a title over your head saying I'm gay even though their not and it's not right to call someone gay because that is offensive to others and I don't get what is so bad about being gay but, when people think that having a gay friend is cool that is bad and I have seen it happen and that is using the for publicity and it would not feel good.

Oracle, please don't treat the word gay like its a bad thing, you don't have to call it the "G word." If you don't mind. Also, Macklemore isn't exactly the best gay activist. He doesn't really support the community and he isn't gay himself so he doesn't really understand the bullying they receive daily.

What I learned from this video more than anything is that words hurt, getting pushed around hurts and all people should do about it is stand up for themselfs, Sand up from others, Stand up for others and just be your self nothing more nothing less from just being you.

I have never been bullied before but one of my friends from my old school has and all because she was scared of masks and I stood up for her . My opinion about bullying is that I think it should stop all it does is hurt people so why do people do it? Did someone bully them? Why do they do this to other people?

Well it started in grade 3 and my friend Ashley was scared of masks and there were 2 boys sitting right beside out class room door when Ashley wanted to go to the class and the boys had masks and was scaring her and I looked over and saw it so I walking up to the boys and told them to stop we reign the masks and to put them away because they were scaring her and they wouldn't listen so I told them to leave out class and they did.

P.S it was a long time ago so It's a little hard to remember.

A lot of times at my house my step brother call me names and throws pillows directly at my face and I know people are going to say pillow don't hurt and he's only calling you some names but Evan if we only get along sometimes the rest of the time he seen pretty mean and my friends always say is not that mean but my friends don't know what it's like to live with him, have him saying rude things to you and a couple of times his words have kind of Made me cry, also one time he let is friend throw a snow ball at my face.

I actually haven't been REALLY bullied, I just have been called names and stuff. But, I have seen some other people get bullied on Instagram and it was pretty serious. My honest opinion on bullying is that it should stop. I bet that while I am typing this, at least one person is getting bullied right now. If you're a bystander, you should try to stop it or nothing will happen and the bullying will continue on. Also, bullying isn't when someone calls you names once or twice, it's when they continually do it for a long period of time. (I'm revising my final draft on Drive right now)

Yes, I have experienced some racism. I think that if the racism continues, it's a form of bullying, but if it's a one time joke, it still hurts the person's feelings. I also have to admit that I have been racist to a few people as well because they were being racist to me first but I still shouldn't have been racist anyways.

That video was really intense! But I wonder why he had to leave his house for three days? If you are a bully stop because if you bully the person you bully kill him or herself because you are calling them names. If you are bullied you need to tell a adult that you trust because bullying is not something that is over after one day it will never stop unless you do something about it.

The boy needed to leave his house for 3 days because the councillor and principal thought hat he was getting karate chops (pork chops) at home. And they thought he was getting abused by his grandma.

This video always chokes me up at the end. It reminded me of a time when I didn't have to keep my feelings when I didn't I have to worry about being called names and being whispered about behind my back. I remember when I hade people who cared about me at this school they left in grade four have seen them once. She made all the difference for me when we became close friends and she stop them from being mean to me and when she left I went to being my old scared and shy self. I feel like Elsa from frozen where she couldn't let out she feelings and she hade to keep it in, one day I will find another friend like that where I can just release my feeling's to them. Don't get me wrong I love my friends that I have now but I just haven't found a another friend like Faye the girl I was talking about.

I have to say that I think that bullying is wrong and people shouldn't say get over it or let it go, because for people like me that is hard and we can't just do it some of us including me have hade feelings building up inside us for years and we just don't know what to do with them so we keep it on and we don't let it go (not spouses to be a pun). We don't know how because we don't have people to Leeds us to do it. All we have is our selves. I hope that after people read this they think differently about people like me.

I have a friend who got bullied two and she gets bullied to this day(not a pun). She gets called stupid and ugly and she lets them push her around. She has all of her feelings build up in her like me. In grade two someone in our school called she a swear word. She is called that so much she is not beliving them.

Honestly, bullying needs to stop. So many people have and will commit suicide because of it. And if you are a bully, how would you feel if you were in that persons shoes? How do you think they feel? What do you think it would be like to be afraid to go outside, to school, or home? We are all not too young to make a difference. So we should. Think about that. How can we stop bullying?

Who cares what they say? They are just stupid people that are insignificant to you if they can't see how awesome you are who cares what they say?! They don't know you especially well enough to judge you! No one should! People can help you but they can not judge you! Yes but not in a bullying mentality a lot in a friendly way and just because it's a "mean" name does not mean you are a bully by saying it a bully is some one who calls people those names meanly ALL the time and hurts them mentally and or physically you can tell one someone's being a bully and it's usually names like "ugly" and such

Remember just because someone says some "mean" names does not mean they are bully's they're is not "oh that persons a small (or low level) bully because they say "mean" names at a friend (not meanly like kill your self mean it something like you get it)"

There are bully's and then are people who are not bully's but may be sarcastic or something

Bullying- This is a horrible thing that is happening everyday around the world. And every day it is probably getting worse for that person who is getting bullied people do not like it when they get, Hit,called names, such as fat,ugly,weird and other really rude stuff. It is easy to be nice It doesn't make sense why some people aren't nice it is super easy. It is not funny when you call someone names and hurt them physically or mentally. Bullying is getting way more serious everyday people are having suicidal thoughts and more it is not cool or funny to bully so you shouldn't.

I have never have been seriously bullied but I was friends with these two guys (no names) they decided that because I was younger and I was an easier target that they would make me do stupid things. At that time they were my friends and so I did some of the things because it was not all that bad. But as the challenge got harder I pushed my self till it hurt until the day I told my mom that day they made tried to make fall of the play ground and they through rocks at me and it was hurting and then I fell of and hurt myself and they said I was weak when I said it hurt. I was a fool and went with them a couple days later little to know that I was so stupid I did the same thing and this time they kicked me when I fell and it hurts not just physically but mentally it gets in your head when things like that happen it feels bad.

I think it is one of the worst things you CAN do because if watching some get hurt you need to help it,s the morel thing to help them the best you can. One my brother was bulled when he was 14 but what I've learned is you can,t fight a fire with gas that all will just make it worse no mater what it,s is you must stop them by getting.A new edge stay with others if your a lone wolf he will go after you.

I don't think many people in this class understand the true brutality of bullying. These days in our perfect little houses with smiling outsides and insides we don't get much bullying. Sure, you were called "stupid" or "weird" once or twice in your life but these are all playful jokes thrown around and all you do is respond with "No, you are." Most of them don't go home overthinking and tugging at their clothes, hiding under their skin and giving out weak "I'm okays." They haven't pretended to be who they're not so they don't get stared at, whispered about, attacked. All they get is the high school drama, short and weak, of teenage boys and girls judging someone by who they're dating. They deal with that. They do t have to deal with the crying and wondering at night that if they were gone would anybody care. They don't stare at themselves in the mirror for hours on end wondering if they stood there long enough that the reflection would change. They aren't afraid to wear shorts and skirts because their legs are skinny enough to suit them. They don't avoid going out with their friends in fear of them saying something wrong, passing by a group of teenage boys with mouths like machine guns. They don't stay home because they simply don't have the mental energy to do anything, and should themselves for it. They have playground tussles and we have full out wars with our broken selves. Bullying can come from everyone, you can even bully yourself. Don't tell me they're problems aren't important. Don't bully even more. Bullying is horrible and disgusting and it kills and hurts. So even if you get the smallest amount of bullying, get it to stop, because it only ever gets worse.

Also, just saying, telling a bully nicely to stop will almost never work if it's actual bullying. When you're being severely bullied and you tell them to stop it goes the ought one ear and out the other, they'll laugh at you when you attempt to tell them no. I'm not saying not to ask, but most times you do have to get really up in their faces and tell them to stop, and fight back. Also, with teachers and stuff, they never really get told the whole story, and most times telling them doesn't help unless your young, because then most kids are afraid of being told on. In this grade kids get off with a slap on the wrist and the victims sometimes get blamed, getting asked what THEY did to cause the person to be like that to them. Remember that.

In gr.3 had this amazing teacher but her daughter had something wrong with her so I never got to see her and at the same time there was this girl (you don't know) named Sydney and she was in a grade younger and she hated me and thought I was horrible so she was really mean and when I told the principle and he did nothing they kept asking me what she was doing but I couldn't tell him I don't know why but she was doing little bits at a time then in gr.4 there was a group of girls that the mean and spoilt so they picked on me and I had no one to I didn't want to tell my mom she would make an
Big deal out of it, but one day a girl named meadow came along and she became my best friend then she got bullied even worse people swore at her and called her bad names and sometimes hit her so i told the principle an he did nothing either to help all he did was talked to them but nothing happend and she is still there today I don't know if she's getting bullied, I never told the principle anything else that year

I learned from the video how people felt. They feel like they don't belong to this world and they want to go away, they feel alone,scared and no one Cares abou them and that is really sad.
I hope that the world will stop being like this and except people not judge them

That video was really powerful. I have never been bullied and I have never seen anybody get bullied witch I am very thankful for. But even thought I have not seen it happen I still think that it is really bad that people will do that. I do think that even if the bully is bulling because of something that is going on in his/her life it still does not mean that they should take it out on another kid. I think that instead of taking out on another kid maybe they can become friends and he/she could tell that person who they just made friends with what's going on in their life. Example #2 Joey has a hard time at home so when he goes to school he tries to make friends. Joey makes a friend named Mike after school they hang out and in a couple of days Joey tells Mike what is going on at home.

I don't know about you but I like example #2 better. Also their is no need to bully even if that is not happening. Everybody has something that is wrong about them even if it is little. I think that bullying somebody who lets say is really good at math, Why should he/she get bullied? When somebody works hard and gets good grades it does not mean that they deserve to get bullied.

The "To This Day" video reminded me of a time I saw a teenager getting pushed around and beaten up I did not want to to anything because it might end of with me being there. So I just walked away and let them do their thing, unless they were just playing around which it did not look like. Another connection I had was when I was walking down the road on the sidewalk there were teenagers there and they were saying that there girlfriend looks better then there friends and calling them ugly.

Whenever we talk about bullying that occurs at schools, it always reminds me of the victims of bullying that have been in the news over the past decade or so.

It makes me think of the following questions:

1.) Why didn't bystanders help these students?
2.) Why did the students bully and single individual students out?
3.) Did the teachers know about it?
4.) Did the family's know about it?
5.) Did the victims share what was happening to them with an adult or their friends?
6.) Have the bullies reflected on their past behaviours? If they are now adults, how do they feel about the past actions?
7.) How do victims feel if they are adults now? How has it affected them psychologically?
8.) Is the anti-bullying movement making a difference?
9.) How has social media affected bullying? Is it more discreet? Is it worse?

Anyways they started making the party a disaster since they heard from Facebook and then they made my brother drunk and of course they bullied him. But I know this story since my brother's friend had to explain what happened. Also, these grade 12 people beat up my brother and took his bike, by the time he was home he had bruises in most spots.

Bullying has put a massive affect on everyone. I've watched a movie about a girl who made a fake Facebook account and chose to make the gender a boy. The main character of the movie was a girl. That girl saw the fake account and started chatting with him. After a while, the girl who made the fake account started putting rumours. They mainly included sexual things and that the main character has done some horrible things. But there is a twist to it, the girl who made the account was the main characters friend. The main character was then trying to commit suicide with pills when the mother did nothing much about it since the girl didn't want to tell her mom. She was then sent to the hospital for therapy with a doctor. The cyber-bully (the girl who made the fake account) then felt horrible for what she did, so she went to the girls house. She told the girls mom all about it. There was more to the movie, but I forgot the rest. I'm sure some of you saw the movie I am talking about.

I was 6 years old and in kindergarten when someone first started bullying me. I never knew what was going on until I was older. In grade.1 and one of my friends told me that they didn't want to hang out with me because they didn't want to be known as my friend. I couldn't go outside without having at least one person make fun of my name or how I was apparently fat or ugly. I didn't know what to do I was losing my friends and I didn't even want to go to school. It was getting worse. The boys in my class were calling me ape and making fun of my last name when the teacher wasn't looking. Luckily we moved and came to Hillcrest.
I don't think bullying should be tolerated. People should be able to stand up for what they believe in without being scared that others will make fun of them. Names are something that parents name their children. Parents don't name their child so other people will like it, they called there child it because they liked it.

I've been bullied almost all my life my first time was in kindergaden. There were these girls ( I'm not using real names because some people now I'm friends with) at first I thought they were nice turned out they would never play with me. One day I came up to them and said " why are you mean to me," the first girl said "because your stupid and we hate you," the second girl said " we're not surposed to tell here that?" Right then and there everything was gone I thought I had nobody,I thought everybody hated me I thought and made myself alone. Since I thought I had no friend I shut my self out from everyone. I went under the playground alone and named the pebbles and they were my only friends.
In grade 1 I stayed away from them and became friends with 2 other girls one I am still friends with. I thought it is over but it wasn't. There was this girl number in grade three whom was friends with girl and wanted all to her self. She started telling my I wasn't good enough and I was stupid ect. Then she lied to me and told me different places then they were. I told my mother she told the principle she stopped.
I moved schools in grade to because my mom had to work I thought I met 2 really nice girls. They were nice at first. Then they started to tell me I was fat ugly and stupid. At that point after all of the name calling though out the years I beilived them. Once again I was alone. I stop talking to my teaches my only friend was my mom.
I came back to my old school still thinking I was alone to my surprise every one was happy to see my I thought maybe this year it was going to be different but it was worst then all the others. There was this kid who did the worst kind of bullying rumours. You my think it is not that bad but it is. He lied to teachers about me bullying him. He lied to my moms face looking her in the eye. He turned a bunch of my friends against me but a few stayed by my side. I realiszed I wasn't alone. He stilled spread rumours but I fought back we tolled the principle we tolled teacher we told parents but they did nothing.
Bullying made me nervous witch made my life harder. I pulled out my hair just because of these mean kids. They did make my life hard. It ruins many peoples. It needs to stop.

How you can help people when they are getting bullied is you can be with them to make them feel safe around you and if you are protecting that person who is getting bullied he probably will protect you when you get bullied. Getting bullied is a serious matter. Let's say that someone is pushing you around and punching you. You have to run and tell an adult or a person you trust. If you are at some place by your self and you see bully's I would hide if I see my bully's. I would try to escape from that place. Some people just don't want to go to school because of those things. I never been bullied I never been a bully and I never seen someone getting bullied. I could just feel what those people getting bullied think. You can feel the pain. If I got bullied I would probably cry everyday if I get bullied. If they pull out something that could kill you and they swing it. That the time to call the police because they are trying to kill you at school which is illegal. If a bully stops to bully and he wants to be friends with you. You have to trust him first. Promise he or she to not do any thing bad or wrong. If you do be friends but if you see them doing something wrong just walk away and don't do it. Remember to think first before you do something. Your life any more like you don't want to be in this world. People making fun of you gives you anger gives you sadness. I have at martial arts who got bullied because of his look. So now he is home schooled and that's why he went to martial arts because if some try's to hit him around you can just use your self defense. Don't kick them or punch them. Just block them with your skills you learned. Bullies can be any one around the world. If you start to bully people and you have an assembly about bullying. Only on screens have I seen bullying happening but if I were to be bullied I honestly wouldn't know how to describe it but if I were to see it happen to someone on the other hand I would describe it as daily like someone every day stealing the other persons lunch money or the person who is stealing will do something bad to them. This video moved me. I knew that some people got bullied, but not to this degree. A few years ago something happened that I'm deeply ashamed of. It was at school, and the class was eating lunch. The teacher was out of the room, so all the kids were in groups. These groups have always made me feel so self conscious. There is the big group, consisting of all of the popular kids and their followers. (I'm not mentioning any names) The rest of the kids were left to get into their own groups. One girl was sitting eating her lunch alone. She looked lonely, I was thinking about going to eat with her so she had some company. Right then I noticed the popular kids. They were snickering at the girl, because there was something about her that she hadn't noticed yet. (I can't say what) I don't blame her, she probably just didn't notice. But what made my heart start to pound was the popular kids. They were snickering and whispering, and I knew it was about the girl. I felt terrible, but in those days everything was so complicated. I knew that if I confronted the kids they would tell me to go. If only I could do it over, I would tell them to stop, and I wouldn't care. Anyway, back then I was in the childish group, even though I wasn't really. They just put me in that group, along with the nerds, the energetics and a few others. They didn't SAY anything about these groups, but we could tell, just from the way they looked at us. With my straight A's, colorful clothing and playful attitude, I was in a bunch of those mean groups. I thought about changing, like my attitude, my clothing and everything. Then I realized that it's not worth it. So I stayed true to myself and to this day, I don't care what people think!

I think that bullying is cruel, In grade 3 and 4 I was bullied by a kid who was going through a tough time. But it made me hate school. And what made it worse was that the teacher was on his side. But he did it to the whole class. He took a kids open backpack and threw it in the mud. And my teacher laughed while the kid was sent outside in the poring rain to collect his/her backpack that the bully had Thrown, it wasn't like everyone was on his side because he did it to everyone. But it seemed like it was mainly me, He would spread rumours and make up mean nicknames, yet he was still the teachers favorite student. It was never extremely bad but it went on for 2 years and I was begging my mom not to take me to school. Bullying made me really sad all the time and like I said I hated school. But if you were to talk with this kid now you wouldn't be able to tell he was a bully. He realized he was making so many people unhappy and he stopped. (It wasn't at this school) And he's nice now. In my opinion it was just because he felt like everyone was happy and their parents were all married and his were getting divorced and he was angry and he didn't want to be alone. Although I wasn't bullied really bad it can ruin peoples lives forever. Think of Amanda Todd. Some guy told her to send him a picture of herself and she did. And then he sent it to all her friends. She was bullied everywhere she went. But I think bullies are just insecure. They think if they can't be happy no one can. Or they don't even realize they are hurting someone so badly.

I also want to draw attention to the fact that many of the deaths and bullying related things we learn about are written about straight, white teenagers. They're issues are real, I just wish that people of other sexualitys, genders and races got more attention. Like I bet most of you didn't know that a 3 trans people are bullied, maimed and killed around the world almost every single day. Also, people who request that people use proper pronouns for them are constantly called male or female even if they identify as the other gender, or they are gender fluid, non binary or agender. People are called "she males" "trannys" and many other things in the trans community, and people are told "Yeah, I know you identify as a boy, but you were born a girl so you're a girl." We really need to respect people more, and not treat things like sexual orientation and gender as taboo things.

My cousin for example she used to be a tom boy but as high school came she felt like she had to fit and she really changed. High school is a rough time for some people you meet new people who hate you and your old friends change and it can be hard. I personally see bullying as a form of all ways of being treated badly. Like racism and being called fat and such just seems to be all connected in every way. For example most teens that get bullyed do really bad things to them self just because someone was putting them down. Lots of teens do drugs and try to kill them selves because if how hard they have been put down. It may seem incredibly stupid that they would do such a thing because one person put them down. But it is a real life thing. But for them to do such stupid things, imagine how BAD they are feeling about themselves? These things happen all the time. And when some one is being called fat or ugly it really hurts their feelings, how would you feel if your were really overweight and was called fat? How would you feel about yourself? To stop things like this you just really need to stand up for yourself. And even some times just admiting it can help too. And after a while it will just become a joke and no one would care. So just stand up for your self.

No actually I have not been bullied before. One of my friends in grade three was bullied a lot but never really cared. Because it was one of those name calling things. But he didn't care to much. And really, name calling is not exactly considered ''Bullying" in my point of view. But I guess it can be categorized as bullying.

I think bullying won't stop until everybody thinks they're wrong and make the bully think you don't care. If everyone does this the bullys will stop because no one is getting upset because that what the bullys want to see.

I agree because if say the bully comes up to you and starts talking to you and you ignore them and just walk away than maybe they will

They will probably stop with you but the next person has to the same. My mom always gave my this but it harder to to but it works. So, if you see some getting bullied you should tell them this because it might just work.

When you said that bullying won't stop it reminds me of a song that says at one point "Don't stop! Believe now! Everybody scream!" or something like that but I'm sure it goes like that.

I understand that getting bullied is not easy for everyone but for people to try to kill themselves and for people to keep thinking that they aren't good enough I think is stupid. I understand that they are pain (this may sound rude) but I think they should remember that the bully is wrong and that they are beautiful, smart, funny and get over it. That is just my opinion.

my older brother was bulled in grade 8 frist day of high school and from their to the end of the year grade 12s puhing him around but just stop going around that part of the school but toke the long way there.

When people get bullied a lot of people are bystanders and think if I just watch nothing will happen to me because I didn't do anything but bystanders are just as guilty as the bully because their basically cheering the bully on because your watching and giving him/her attention and that's really all they want but, if you just don't pay attention or help the person getting bullied.

The video made me think of when I was bullied in grade 3 and 4 by a kid that still goes to this school. I was pushed around and called names everyday by him and it really hurt. I remember not wanting to go to school and also being sad when I came home. But now I'm not bullied anymore and the person who bullied me is kinda my friend.

I think the reality is that bullies wont stop and it will get worse possibly a lot a teachers and schools around the world wont care enough to stop it.
