Thursday: Autumn Visualizations using Descriptive words and the 5 Senses

Today we learned about spatial awareness and safety in PE. It is very important to be aware of your surroundings and to be alert for your personal safety and the safety of others, especially when objects are flying through the air.

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE - I have listed several quotes from 'The One and Only Ivan'. Choose one and write about a connection you have with it and what your interpretation of the quote is. Be sure to include enough details to express your thoughts clearly. If you see that your classmates are commenting on one of them, choose a different one. Also, if you have one that you wrote down, feel free to use it instead of the ones listed below.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2: The fall/Autumn weather is upon us. Take a look at the photo in today's planner message and use descriptive words (adjectives), to describe what you see! Answer the following:

- What do you see?
- What do you hear?
- What do you smell?
- What do you taste?
- What do you touch/feel?

3.) MATH 6 / 7 - Test tomorrow for both grades. Complete review questions.

"A good zoo is a large domain. A wild cage. A safe place to be. It has room to roam and humans who don't hurt. A good zoo is how humans make amends."

I interpreted many things. Here are a few. Firstly, I think the quote meant that this is how the humans apologize to the animals. I guess it is to say sorry for putting you in here, but we will try to make it feel like home. Secondly, I thought that it meant that is how the humans make peace with the animals until I found out what amends meant. Thirdly, In thought it had meant that a good zoo, doesn't exist. But, I guess you can think of it any type of way you want. Finally, I thought the quote had meant that humans that are good are at the zoo, not at the Big Top Mall. Additionally, humans like Mack aren't fit to run a video arcade/mall.

What I see-
I see beautiful Fall colours and a perfect amount of sunlight peeking through the trees.

What I hear- I hear birds of all kinds chirping from branches in their nests. Also, I hear kids playing and screaming while jumping from swing sets to seesaws.

What I smell- I smell freshly trimmed grass, and a fresh Autumn breeze.

What I taste- I taste my chapped lips from the cold Autumn air.

What I touch/feel- I feel the frozen playground slides. I feel a chill go up my spine from a wisp of air rushing by. I feel warm from the sun, but chilly from the Fall weather.

@ Sandy - After reading your response, I felt as though I had just visited a park where Autumn leaves had fallen. Your descriptions were so vivid! You used excellent adjectives to describe each of the five senses! Your writing has come such a long way since last year! You deserve praise! Keep up the good work! :)

1. I chose “Humans. Rats have bigger hearts. Roaches have kinder souls. Flies have-” because it means a lot and it is saying that humans are abusive and cruel to animals but that is from the trapped animals in a cage the animals in the wild would probably not even know about humans. So basically i am saying that is from the perspective of Ivan.

2.I see many thing like a park a child a bench and lots of very colourful trees
I hear the wind blowing and i hear a child laughing
I smell that smell of a park
I Taste really nothing (since my mouth would be closed)
I feel a breeze in my hair and the sand on my feet a

#1)I chose When I'm drawing a picture, I feel...quiet inside. because when i draw i stay on my drawing like if someone was talking to me i would be ignoring them because i am so focused on my drawing

#2)I see lots of beautiful fall colors i also see nice red trees.
I hear birds chirping and the air going through the trees.
I smell the nice fresh air from the air.
I taste frost coming off my lips because it is so cold.
I touch/feel the moist leaves from the trees.

An unpredictable species, Homo sapiens”Is the quote I chose because firstly, I have an connection with because my sister usually is happy the one moment and the next she is mad. Secondly, animals can tell if humans are going to hurt them or save them so that is why I think that is why they said that also, humans cant under stand animals.

I connect to this quote because when im doing the things I like I can only think about what i'm doing at while i'm doing it or about to do it. For example when i'm biking I only can think about landing the jump i'm about to hit. Or when i'm dancing I can only think about the move i'm doing.

1)"Right now I would give up all the yogur raisins in the world for a heart of ice." I made a connection to when Stella died Ivan didn't want to feel the pain I once had that feeling when my cat died I didn't want to feel the pain in my fire heart.

"When i'm drawing I feel... quiet inside" I connected to this quote when I heard it because because when ever I draw, I cant hear my surroundings I can only hear myself think same with my video games when i'm focused in, I can barely hear my brother yelling at me from his room, and that is how I connected to that quote.

When Im at the Park:
What I see: I see kids running around playing tag on the equipment.
What I hear: I hear kids stepping on the fallen leaves in the park.
What I smell: I smell the wet concrete from all the rain poring down on it.
What I taste: I taste the wet rain drops spitting down on my tongue.
What I touch/feel: I feel the cold metal bars on my ice cold hands.

If I was in the park in fall I see the bench and the equipment and kids playing and I smell the fall air and I taste really nothing at all and I feel the wood chips and the park stuff

When I'm drawing a picture I feel...Quiet inside.

When I draw and read I zone out and just relaxes and stay cool and come down. I love to read and draw its came and its fun.

2)I would see kids playing and climing on the jungle gym and having so much fun.I would hear kids yelling and screming and having fun.I would smell sweat and stinky kids. I would taste the cool autumn air and maeby a snack or 2. I would touch the play ground and the slide and the munky bars.

Part #1 of Response:
I have picked the quote, “Right now I would give all the yogurt raisins in all the world for a heart made of ice.” It means that he would give everything in all the world for a heart that doesn't really care that Stella has passed away, a REAL Silverback's heart. I made a connection to that, I was once very sad to hear that my grand-grandmother died. I was very friendly with her, she gave me lots of money. Just then, I wished I had never known her. I felt very sad.

I see a little girl, I see nature, mother life, I see a slide, I see a bench.
- What do you hear?
I hear kids screaming, dogs barking, tress waving back and forth, I hear leaves falling.
- What do you smell?
I smell a BBQ at a nearby neighbourhood, I smell the new season of Autumn.
- What do you taste?
I taste wind.
- What do you touch/feel?
I feel the wind, feel the hard wood, I feel the blisters on my hand from the monkey bars, I feel coldness.

“Right now I would give all the yogurt raisins in all the world for a heart made of ice.” A connection I had with this quote was when y grandpa died I wished that I didn't have a heart so I wouldn't fell sad. I also found this quote powerful because it tells us more about Ivans character and that he has strong emotions.

Whenever I am drawing it is just so calm and quiet because I can't really focus on the other things around me when I'm drawing because I am only focused on drawing.

Firstly, this quote means something special to me because my mother passing away gave me the same feeling Ivan just went through. Secondly, Ivan is a lone gorilla so this had more impact on him then on me. Finally, I think people can relate this to me in a sort of way, I'm normally calm (sometimes) and I can deal with some insults or pain.

If I was in that park right now, I would be jus standing there listening to the wind blowing through and all the raindrops from trees and buildings fall and drop, watch leaves in the wind and fall all the way from the top, smell the intense air and sweat of children, taste the cold air with a pair of cold lips and feel the cold brushes of air and the damp, cold floor.

“Right now I would give all the yogurt raisins in all the world for a heart made of ice.” This quote means a lot to me because I have felt the same way as Ivan, when my dog passed away it was really hard to say good bye to her because I knew that I was never gonna see her again. It means that you would give anything to not feel the pain the sadness. But that must of been really hard for Ivan because Ivan has been there for 27 years and Stella really understood him and would tell him nothing but the truth. And Ivan has been alone for awhile so he must of been heart broken.

#2: I can see the tree's blowing and the sun is hafly on your daughters face, so I predict that it is probably a little bit sunny. And also it looks like there is a bit of a breeze because she is wearing a sweater.

I can hear the birds chirping, wind blowing, people talking, leaves crunching, and kids throwing sand.

I can smell the leaves and the food people are eating.

I can taste the fresh air and my hair thats blowing in to my mouth.

I can feel the breezy air blowing against my face, the sun thats warming my face up, the sand that is warming up my bear feet.

Ivan mentioned this quote in the novel, because on of his passions are drawing. The reason why I can connect with this quote is because I feel quiet inside when I'm playing the piano. If you don't already know, one of my favourite passions is playing the piano. When I'm playing the piano I don't hear anything that is happening, well, yes it is loud and it is hard to hear anything but what I mean is that I'm so dosed off that I don't know anything that is happening around me. To be honest I very much like that felling, it is kind of like a time for myself where I can just relax.
My quote: "When I'm playing my piano, I fell... quiet inside."
- In the quote the word "quiet" can also mean "warm".

- I SEE the colourful trees, and the true sign of fall.

- I HEAR the sound of rustling leaves and the sound of children playing.

- I SMELL wet cement after a rainfall. And the breezy air of a fine fall day.

The quote can have a lot of meanings to other people. But in my opinion, it tells me that Ivan would give anything in the world for a heart made of ice since he loves yogurt raisins. And my connection with that quote is that one time, when I really wanted to do well in a competition, I would give anything in the world to at least get top 3 in it..

I could see the leaves colour changing as it falls off the tree's branch then taken away by the soft Autumn breeze. I can hear the kids playing around on the playground. I can smell the tree's and the aroma of the savory sizzling barbecue. I taste the sand/gravel as I fall onto the ground off the monkey bars dreaming that the barbecue was mine to eat. I touch the wet cold chains on the swings as I go on it to play.

I had a connection with that because when my grandpa passed away it almost felt like i wanted my heart to be made of ice because. I was so upset i just didn't want to feel all that bad emotion. That is my connection

@ Bobby Orr - I can easily connect to your connection. We had a family member pass away in September so my family and I can relate to how you felt. It is never easy when a family member passes on. I like this quote because it is a great one to describe how we all want our hearts to feel when we feel unbearable pain.

HEAR
I can hear the banging of feet on the slides, kids screaming and shouting you're it and the squeaking of swings.
SEE
I can see the kids playing on the playground, the parents with toddlers on the swings trying to make them laugh saying woah you almost hit me and i can also see the colourful crispy leaves falling off the trees
SMELL
I can smell the crisp autumn air, the sand that has been freshly ran through and the smell of worn metal.
TASTE
I can taste the cool breeze almost pushing me over, and the goldfish crackers that my mom will bring me when it is time to go home.
FEEL
I can feel the cold slippery metal, the sand getting stuck in my shoes and the wobbly bridge that I am standing on.

CONNECTION TO THE QUOTE

When I draw a picture If i like it then its beautiful. If someone else doesn't like it it is still beautiful.

I have a connection with this. at the zoo, I always feel bad for the animals. but I keep reminding myself that the zoo is actually a nice place to live. It has plants and things that are in that animals real surroundings.

Ivan is saying in this quote that he would give up allot to not feel the loss of stella some times i feel like that to like i would when my g-g died but i was around 4 then so did not understand death but im still sad for her loss i just never cry'd about it and a year or two ago my great-grandma died and i was sad but i still did not cry sooo what im saying is that when i want a heart of ice im really sad so i geuss in some way im like Ivan cause he dont cry all that often neither
