Thursday: Snowshoeing at Grouse Mountain

A big thank you to all the parent drivers who helped make today's snowshoeing field trip a success!

For many students, it was their first time snowshoeing; for others, it was a great returning experience. During the 2-hour trek on the scenic trails, students also had an opportunity to learn about alpine safety, danger signs of hypothermia, Grouse Mountain's hibernating grizzly bears, and much more. It was a beautiful day to be exercising and enjoying the great outdoors.

1.) MATH 6: Scaled diagrams are due tomorrow
MATH 7: See your teacher's website

2.) SCIENCE: Bring your science project to school tomorrow for feedback. It should be almost finished.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE: During the snowshoeing tour, our knowledgeable tour guide described many aspects of snowshoeing safety, hypothermia, Grouse Mountain's water source, and plants/animals native to the Grouse Mountain habitat.

A) Write at least 3 sentences describing specific facts that you learned from the tour guide during our snowshoeing tour today.
B) If you did not come snowshoeing or are unable to complete part A, you can ask questions to 3 students who completed part A.

I learned that when the bears are hibernating, they usually give birth to 1 or 2 cubs by Spring. I also learned the 3 stages of hypothermia. The first is when you mumble. This means when your teeth start chattering and shivering. Next is fumbling. This mean that you can't feel your fingers, toes, etc. Lastly, stumbling. This means that you start falling and tripping because you can't balance anymore. You only have about 45 minutes to stay alive if you don't get help. Lastly, I learned about some trees and how old they are. For example, I learned that one of their trees is about 1500 years old! Additionally, it has been struck by lightning many times.
Extra: I learned that the snow may pile up and make a fake ledge. If you get to close to one the snow will fall, and you will get hurt because beyond the ledge was a cliff.

When we were snow shoeing the guide told us that there are lynx on the grouse mountain and I think he also said there are cougars sometimes and they can eat people.
The guide also showed us certain trees that live to about 500 years and he told us that grey owls are probably the most dangerous animals there, also during heavy rain the trail is closed because the rain causes the snow to move causing an avalanche.

The red cedar tree you will see in the lower parts of Vancouver. There is a tree that is over 1200 years old on grouse mountain. People found a 2000 year old tree on Vancouver island.

Some interesting facts I learned today.
1.) the bears that live in grouse do not hibernate over the winter some of them stay in a cabin sort of thing and stay awake about 40% of the day.
2.) that the great horned owls are the most bloodthirsty animal on grouse mountain not the cougars or bears.
3.) mini avalanche form when there is bad weather and wash out basically all the trees in the avalanches way.

During the snow shoeing, the guide was telling us about the drinking water from the glaciers and about how fresh the water was. Then, we learned about the 3 stages of getting hypothermia. They were Mumble, jumble, and stumble. He also told us a story about someone who died with hypothermia. Hypothermia ca kill you with in 45 minutes! Last by not least, the guide told us about the cedar tree that lived for 1200 years and has Been hit by lightening many many times. He also talked about the tree that was 2000 something years old on Vancouver Island.

On the snowshoeing adventure I learned three interesting facts. One of them is the three types of trees that are on the west coast they are Lichen, Western Hemlock, and the Douglas Fir. Secondly, he thought us about the grouse mountain water supply. They get there water from a thousand year old volcano with the center of the volcano filled with water and ice that is millions of years old. Lastly, he thought us about hypothermia and the three main stages they are mumble, fumble, and stumble. When you get cold and have the first stage of hypothermia you start chattering your teeth. Secondly, if you get the second stage you will start dropping things and lose feeling in your toe tips and finger tips. The last stage if you start falling around.

A.) I learned that a tree in Grouse mountain lived up to 2000 years! (I forget what the tree was). Also The bears in the mountain move while they're hibernating, so they wake up once in a while then get comfortable then go back to hibernating. Lastly I learned that water on the mountain is fresh water coming from an ancient volcano that snow has covered the inside of the hole!.

PS. I am not sure if I did the response correctly please comment on what I should improve on thanks. :)

Is it easy to walk with snowshoes when going downhill? I read that snowshoes work best on flat or uphill.

A1) Yes, it is way easier when going downhill.

A2) They are pretty big, as big as a mini poster board.

1) i learnd that the snow is really and i mean really deep.
2) i also learnd that carvings were a way of teaching kids.

Just ny opinion but you said getting frozen is easy I think you should have said getting hypothermia is easy or something around that. Also nice but I would have liked to see more detail.

I learned a lot about trees. I do not know what type of tree it was, but they said it was on Vancouver Island which lived up to 2000 years. I also learned that the water you drink from Grouse was from a volcano. That means that it is pure. I also learned the 3 stages of hypothermia, mumble, fumble, and stumble. Mumble is your teeth chattering, fumble is your fingers and toes getting numb and stumble is basically stumbling.

Overall, I had a great time but the snowshoeing was hard.

1) that in a mountain near grouse their is fresh water that they get but it used to be a volcano and the water goes down to the center of the earth and is very pure and fresh.
2) that if you walk to far out you will drop many feet off of a cliff into a river or lake.
3) the three stages of hypothermia are mumble fumble stumble, mumble is where your teeth start chattering wich isn't bad because it happens to everyone, fumble which is where when you are doing stuff type hands are always shaking and you can't hold anything, you will need to be taken to the hospital immediately, last is stumble which is where you can't stay on your feet and are falling, you will only have 45-60 minutes to live unless taken care of immediately.
P.S. I didnt mean to copy and paste it.

I learned when you are snowshoeing you need to keep a paste if you are going for a little run or a long trail don't run to the front and push your self just take it easy.

Another thing I learned was the Grizzly Bears do not hibernate it is called something I forget and they have a little cabin thing where they get to run around in.

And the last thing I learned was Grey Horned Owls are the most viscous out of all the animals because it eats everything also it is hard to hear them if they are coming or if they are just standing, flying/gliding, etc.

The first thing I learned was that Bears don't hibernate, although most people think the do, they don't! The second thing I learned was that you can make tea from pine needles. The third thing is that a certain kind of tree (I forget the name of it) can live up to 500 years old!

2) Secondly I learned the three stages of hypothermia and how to remember them. Stage one is mumble which means your teeth start to chatter and your mumbling. Stage 2 is fumble which means that if you try to open something or grab something you fumble and cant open or grab it.
3) And lastly I learned that the drinking water on grouse mountain comes from dam mountain which is an ancient volcano that over the years filled in with ice and snow and now is a very small but deep lake. Know one knows for sure how deep it is but it was measured over 400 meters deep!
That is what I learned when we went snowshoeing.

Today I learned that the longest living cedar tree was 1200 years. I also learned that hypothermia is just like frost bite, stage one is mumble where your a bit cold, stage two is fumble it's when you try to do something but you can't because your shaking so much, and stage three is when you can't stand. Finally, I learned that when there is bad weather the rain goes into a mini avalanche

1.) I learned today, that there are trees on the mountain that over 1500 years old. Our tour guide also showed us one of the trees that had been struck by lightning many times, but had still kept it's shape. I also learned about the three most common tree's here in Vancouver, unfortunately I don't quite remember the actual names.
2.) The second thing that I learned today, was about hypothermia and the three stages. The first stage is if you are mumbling and your teeth start to chatter, this happens to everyone sometime in their life. The second stage is when you can't feel your fingers or toes, and it feels like you have got frost bite. And lastly, the third stage is when you start falling down while your walking because of how cold you are. To remember these three stages, our tour guide told us to remember mumble,fumble,stumble.
3.) The third thing I learned was how the water on the mountain is from a tiny man made pond that is more than 400 m down. This is actually made from the core of a volcano and after glaciers covered it.

Three facts I learned today is that the natives taught with carvings, they thought the cedar trees were magic and that cedar trees can live up till 1500 years but one on Grouse Mountain lived over 2000. When the native taught their children, they used carvings and some of the lessons were actually some of the greatest one can learn. They also thought the cedar trees are magic because the trees would keep cool in summer and stay warm in winter when ever they were buit in a shelter form. Cedar trees last very long but one specific tree was struck by lightning multiple times and is still alive and lived past the average life span.

I learned that we were actually standing on 2-3 meteres of snow I knew we were standing on a lot but not that much. Also, that there are bears hibernating in a cabin and they actually move in hibernation. I think the coolest thing I learned is that there are actually trees over 2000 years old and one has been struck many times and still it is living and standing but lost its shape.

I learned that the female bears can have 1-2 cubs while they are hibernating and the cool fact was that even when the baby's are born she doesn't wake up from hibernation. I also learnt that we were standing on 12-13 feet of snow. The guide told us that the snow got compounded and turned into a form of a solid. She also told us that cedar can be used as a heater or an air conditioner.

1.) To start off, I learned that Grouse Mountain is actually named by a animal named grouse! I just thought that the name sounded cool and the animal as the logo was just some random animal.

2.) Second of all, I learned that during hibernation, move and walk around. I thought before that the bears just sleep through all of it. But now I know that they move and walk.

3.) To end off, I learned that the Great Horned owl is the most deadliest creature on Grouse. They eat anything! Even other Great Horned owls!

I learned that they don't care if your out of breath they will making you keep walking
I learned that snowshoes are really hard to walk in and I learned that there was this big house that used to keep everyone warm and keep the bad spirits away.
