THURSDAY: Speech Fest Finalists

Today, the grade 6 finalists from each class competed in the grade six finals to see who will go on to the finals in front of the school. Because the competition was so close, we will have a 'SPEECH OFF' between Brooke and Bryce tomorrow morning. Brooke, be sure to check your email and your speech for some descriptive feedback. Mrs. D and I are very proud of all the students for all the hard work you have put into your essays and speeches! The grade 7 finalists will be announced in class tomorrow. You will compete against the other grade 7on Tuesday.

1.) SCIENCE:
- All machine images are due for tomorrow.
- Be sure to communicate with your partners so you are able to complete it for tomorrow morning.
- You will only have time to glue your images on border paper and poster paper in class tomorrow.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:
What did you learn about the entire 'SPEECH FEST' process?
- What did you learn through the writing process? (essay drafts, edits, revisions, research, etc)
- What did you learn from presenting your speech?
- What did you learn from watching others present their speeches?
- Ask two students about their responses.
- edit/revise your post.

First and I think it was hard to present because of how many people were looking at me and how nervous I felt. I think that it is difficult to go through all the paragraphs in your mind so I was surprised about how many people memorized their speeches. Going through all the feedback and writing and thinking and self confidence, I think that I actually would like to do this again sometime. Just like in front of family and friends. But you guys are my friends! I learned that you should always have confidence and courage in yourself and that you can face any challenge in life.

I think the essay drafts, edits, revisions and research was the easiest part of the whole speech. Trying to cut stuff out to make the speech in the limited amount time period was a little hard but I still got throw it. Presentation was really nerve raking ad I had butterfly's in my stomach and I was also really scared to share my speech with my class mates. From watching other speech's I learned what I could do better next time and what I can do to improve.

I think that the research and the revisions were the essayist part of the speech. I was really nervous and I messed up a little. I learned that its really had to memories my speech. I learned that people were nervous to so I had nothing to worries about.

You didn't mention anything about writing skills. Did you find that easy or hard to do? Also i noticed some spelling errors.

I learned that to be successful in a good speech you need to memorize and present your speech very well otherwise you'll get chewed up and tossed away in the real world. What I learned from the writing process is that you need and a very good structure, main idea, and hook so your listener will be interested. when I was presenting and other people were presenting I learned to memorize very well, use hand gestures, and eye contact.

I learned that it was hard to memorize a speech because I had trouble memorizing mine but lots of other people did too. In the writing process of a speech I learned that you edit your speech a lot. From watching other speeches I noticed that not a lot of people used hand gestures and I think people did do them because they were all nervous.

In the writing process, I learned that Every time that you check/re-read it you find a new thing that you can fix and make better.

I learned that everyone is always nervous so that you can't criticize people on that because it wouldn't be fair.

I learned that just practicing your speech will make a noticeable improvement because it will make it more fluent and enjoyable.

"Do you think... do you... do you think we should be..." Those are some words from my first sentence in my speech. For hours I cut my speech then memorized it and then made more changes. Writing a speech was a really difficult thing to do and also has many steps that you have to take. But, I really I enjoyed everything. I learned that is was VERY hard to stay within the time limit of three minutes but, in the end, I accomplished my goal. Also, it was tricky to memorize but, thats why I always had my cue cards on hand. Sometimes is can also be tricky to find a good topic to pick. One last thing was, staying at a good pace. It can be tricky to not got to fast but not go to slow. While presenting my speech I learned if you make a mistake keep going like nothing ever happened and then people won't notice. Also, like I mentioned before stay at a good pace because, even if your speech is over the time limit stay at that same pace. I learned everything I mentioned above. Stay at a good pace, memorize your speech, have cue cards, and if you mess up keep going. So, this is what I learned while presenting my speech. What did you learn?

From making my speech I learned many things. A few of them are...
1. I learned how to make and make good edits and revisions on my speech. 2. I learned to take more feedback 3. I learned about how to present a speech. While editing it and revising it I realized my speech was much above the time limit 3 minutes. With some help I managed to make it closer to 3 minutes but still above.

About presenting I learned that it is trickier than you think and it is very hard to not look down at your cue cards while presenting. I also learned not to talk robotic.

As we went through the speeches I learned more and more things as we went. Some major stuff where 1. Talk more fluent not robotic. 2. Use more hand gestures, etc.

Overall, Learned tons from the speech fest. Though it may not be that entertaining, it was a very good learning experience for the future. What will be the topic for your next speech??

In the speechfest I learned how to make an essay, present an essay, memorize an essay edit an essay and leave for a month to postpone the essay.

Through the writing prices I learned how much humour is appropriate and how helpful peer suggestions are.

From presenting my speech I learned how to properly use hand gestures to enhance the experience for the listener and how to use different tones.

From watching others speeches I learned how to improve mine.

In the writing process, I learned to revise from my spelling errors, punctuation, adding more sentences and fixing capitals. I got feedback from classmates and from Mr. Hong.

In the speaking part it was really nervous for people so you should not criticize them.

I learned that if you practice more on your speech you will have more confidence in your speaking.

What I learned from the speech fest process is that writing a speech was really hard, and memorizing it was a whole different story.

What I learned from the writing process was that it was hard to find good transition words and it was hard to get things to flow properly. I found I was always proof reading to make it better.

What I learned from presenting my speech was that once you're up there you get nervous which affects your speech.

What I learned from watching others present was that some seemed confident and presented really well while others were nervous like me.

During the whole speech fest process, I thought presenting it and having it under a time limit was really hard. I'm not really good at public speaking and I always tried shortening my speech to match the time limit each time I practiced it. Although I faced some challenges, I learned how to make a speech and how to structure them nicely so it's not all over the place. When I was presenting, I could always improve on my pace, eye contact, and hand gestures. I learned that you have to be really loud when presenting and to change your tone when you're speaking. I learned that some people were really nervous but that's okay because everyone gets nerves once in a while. Also the more they were nervous the more they seemed to speed u their speeches and how they all spoke faster to fit everything into the time limit.

In the writing process I learned how to revise my speech. Getting feed backs from Mr.Hong and other people helped me to fix some errors in my speech. Also I re-read my speech for several times so that I could know what is the problem. From presentation I learned that don't be nervous, and be confident. Also memorize the speech so you can speak more naturally. From watching other present their speech I learned to use some more hand gesture, and speak with clear and loud voice.

I learned that writing an essay is not easy especially when you have present in front of the whole class because when I got nervous start to forget my speech and then when I was presenting I started to speed it up. I also learned that when writing a essay you have to make a Lot of edits and revisions. From watching other perform there I learned to stay confident even if you mess up.

@OMGCOTTONCANDY I think you are alittle repetitive withy the word "I." Also, try to put it in order. For example, try to put it in order, what you have learned from writing the speech, then from presenting, then what you have learned from others presenting.

In the writing process of speech fest, I learned that it takes time to make it a good speech. For example, you can not be done right away, you have to edit and revise it many times and go through it, so you did not make any mistakes. When I was editing my speech it was good for me to ask Mr. Hong for feedback, so I knew what to change.

When I presented my speech I learned that I really needed to show lot's emotion. Of course my speech topic was not the happiest topic but, I am fighting for girls rights, so I need to be proud representing girls. Also, I learned that using handguesters effects the audience when presenting, apparently it engages them.

But, when others presented I learned that I was not the only one that did not memorize my speech, but that' okay. Lesson learned that if you don't use emotions you audience won't get interested.

What I learned was to keep the speech going even if you made a mistake and to show more power into your speech so it looks like you put all of your effort into it, which you did. I also learned that doing a speech in front of a crowd that big is going to be tough for me to present. A classroom is easy, a few other classes isn't that bad, the whole school? Couldn't get worse, in front of the country, there is no way I'm doing that! Now I know how Obama first felt on his first speech to all of the US.

What I learned through the writing process was to try and put interesting words like transitions, important facts that stay related to the topic, to try and keep everything flowing smooth and other important things. Every speech always has to flow fluently.

What I learned from presenting my speech was that to imagine like nobody was there and you were just practicing in your own bedroom and to show hand gestures, facial expressions, to adjust the voice monotone high or low, and show how confident you are for doing a speech.

I learned from watching the other speeches was to try to keep yourself calm and relaxed, to keep the voice up high so your not whispering into anyone's ears. Along with that, also showing lots of hand gestures.

When writing my speech I learned the proper form to write it in. I also leared about the edit/revision prosses and how to write a perssuasive essay. When presenting my speech, I learned to make eye contact to the audience, use hand gestures, and vary voice tone. I learned from other peoples speeches that I should include some humor and be more enthusiastic about my speech.

Through out my speech making process I have learned that structure is very important. If you don't structure your speech properly then you will have a very messy speech with stuff all over the place. Making a speech with no structure is like trying to make a sandwich with out bread. Also I learned that making your voice loud and clear. So people can understand what you are saying. Also you need to us gestures or else your speech isn't that interesting. That is what I learned.

"Welcome....... the greatest......the most talented... and the most fastest soccer player in the world....". Here is one of my sentences for my hook in my speech about ,"Soccer". Firstly, I know that my speech was way over 3 minutes, however if tomorrow we found out who are the two grade 7 finalists, and maybe if I was one of them I would probably cut out unimportant sentences, With this in mind, I learned that finding a speech topic was pretty challenging espicially because, I didn't know what was the right topic for me, and so I thought. Soccer! Infact, I chose soccer because, I basically, know everything, I can connect with this topic, and it realets to me since I love playing soccer. I also, learned that if I made a mistake, I could easily fix it if I always practice and I can follow the feedback the classmates gave me such as, having a louder voice. Secondly, I learned that whenever I present my speech I need to make sure, that the audience wants to be engaged with my speech, like making sure that I met all of the criteria. I also learned that, if I do forget a sentnce in my speech when I am talking I need to make sure that, I need to quickly recover, and trying not to laugh/ smile when I mess up. Why? Well, because if I do mess up and I laugh or smile I might just keep on messing up, and becoming more nervous. Lastly, I learned that when a person presented their speech, everyone had cons to work on. Infact, this will help them get better, because, they will know what to do better next time. Above all, thats what I learned about speeches. What did you learn?

When I was writing my speech I had to change a lot and read through it over and over again. But it was a good thing because I need a good speech to present. I learned to edit and revise so I don't mess up when I am presenting.

When I was presenting I learned that I should give more eye contact, use hand gestures, use humor, and talk more confident. I learned this because if I was gonna put a good speech I would have to be more confident.

When I was practicing with my partner it seemed easy like I wasn't nervous. I had a good voice tone, hand gestures, and humor. But when I was up it felt different. It was hard for me to use hand gestures and voice tone. Thats because there was more people I am not used to public speaking.

I learned a lot of things during the process, but the biggest thing that I learned was to use the feedback that you are given. Without feedback, your essay/speech would not be as good as it could be in the end. I also learned that when you present a speech you have to use eye contact, speak in a loud clear voice, give appropriate emotion, and use hand gestures. If you don't use any of these, you will get a bad mark on your essay/speech. To conclude, these are a only a few things that you need to do, but if you do them you will do well.

What I have learned from speech fest is to be confident and give natural hand gestures. I did not put hand gestures I put barely any hand gestures. I should have also given more conference because I was mumbling and just talking really fast but I stared to get more confidence. So if I add this to my next speech I will do way beter than this speech.

I learned that writing an essay is really hard, you cant expect it to be perfect on the first go you need to edit and revise to make it great.
Other people seemed really nervous and that kind of reminded me that i need to try to be confident but i always get nervous so that didn't help.
If i were to present my speech again i would definitely have revised my speech a little more to make it flow and to explain more on my topic, i would also work harder on my oral presentation by trying to use more hand gesturesand eye contact.

From the whole Speech Fest process I learned so many things like writing an essay and adding all the components of an essay, editing and revising, speaking in front of a large audience, and more! From writing my speech I learned how to make a good hook and how to make good transitions and there was a lot more that I learned about writing a good essay. From presenting my speech I learned how to show the audience that you are excited to talk about your topic by using hand gestures and facial expressions. I also learned how to make my voice go up and down, speaking loud and clear, and speaking at a good pace. From watching others speech I learned how to improve my speech.
