Thursday: Friendly Competition

5/16/2013

We began the day with an exciting game of Octopus in PE. Then we continued with our relay practice, focusing on the techniques involved in baton passing.

For book club, we examined a student's response, and discussed about ways to improve the response.

In math, we reviewed integer addition, and had a friendly competition to get students thinking about whether the result of adding 2 integers will be positive or negative.

1.) REMINDERS: Tomorrow is the last day to bring in hot lunch forms/money. Grade 7's, please remember your purple forms for your yearbook comments.

2.) MATH: Complete these integer questions via Google Form (I made the questions for today. We'll do "create your own questions" some other day).

3.) BOOK CLUB/WRITE A RESPONSE: Post your REVISED response # 1 here (there should be 2 paragraphs).

4.) Socials/Language Art - Visual Representation:

Be sure to follow the criteria sheet. You will be assessed based on this handout. If you do not follow it, it will be reflected in your assessment. The CONTENT is due tomorrow!
The CONTENT of your Visual Representation project must be completed by tomorrow. You will be assessing one another in class tomorrow.

You did a pretty good job with your post. Although you could add quotes and transition words. Maybe capitalize the names of people. You could also add detail, for example, maybe you could talk about the bigger picture. More about Parvana. You could talk about how war and conflict are going on in the world. Maybe you could also write about what bombs do to you etc.

The quote I felt was the most powerful was, "Harriet couldn't sleep because angry white faces were keeping her up!" I thought this was a really good quote because the scary white faces were white people yelling at her in her dreams. She probably dreamed about it because she has been discriminate against her whole life and can't stop thinking about it not even for a second. I thought this was good because Harriet is in a pickle which people call racism. Racism is when people discriminate against you because of your skin clour. This is still happening today and I don't like how would you feel if people were calling you names because of your skin clour. Would you would be sad or mad. This is why I thought this quote was a good one because it's powerful and sad and needs to be shared.

An unescorted woman is not allowed to leave Ellis Island

The quote I chose relates to my theme because women can't go past Ellis Island unescorted without a man because the man makes the most money and the women can make some money sometimes like my mom. (T-S) she sews sometimes aprons and she made her whole bed (other than the frame and bouncy thing)so it is pretty cool. When she was treated nicely by the police officer I think that she was maybe pretty and it was a fellow Irishman. I think that has to do with rights because women are sometimes treated better than men and I think it should be fair.The woman in the book had to persuade the man that was checking her and taking notes about her so I think it was lucky that she passed.

So my quote, ‘That’s going to be me,’ he said to Iqbal. ‘I’m going to do that when I grow up.’ Iqbal glanced indifferently at the truck. ‘A soldier’s better.’ on page 89 is important because, you do not know if they are even going to ever have any freedom. I have a text - self connection to this, I said once that I wanted to be a video game designer and then my mom said that a doctor is better, I did not have the freedom to state my opinion without someone saying their opinion. The message from this quote is basically feel sorry for the kids who are in child labour because they do not have the freedom (like me) to chose their own jobs because they are in slavery.

"Grins of delight spread over their faces as the shock of sweetness hit their tongues on" page 6 is related to poverty and hunger. This is because they are probably never going to eat it again. They also probably never had good candy, you should probably feel very bad for the kids that do not get sweets like me and you. The message from this paragraph is to be grateful for what you have because other kids do not even get it. I have a text to self connection to this because I once had some caramel candy and a big fat happy face spread within seconds on my face.

This quote is related to my theme because it has to do with debt this means money that needs to be owed. Narin and Sita, Gopal’s brother and sister, were saying this. They are quite young to be so concerned about money they have, want, and need.

I can connect to the real world (T-W), because cousins of mine used to be worried about money and debt when they were younger. I too, can relate (T-S), because when I was younger, and my parents would say the classic ‘We don’t have extra money to buy that toy.’ I would actually get really concerned even though many parents say that just because they won't waste their hard earned money on things like that. Instead, they could buy a blanket, a bed, food, etc. The really necessary things. It’s good that our parents save money though, since they want us to have a bright future. Unlike Gopal’s family. I'm almost 100% sure that Gopal's mother or father didn't mean to do that. They were too busy thinking about how much money that they can earn. Therefore, they bought many items like crops that they could grow and sell. That's when everything started going downhill. The onions weren't worth as much as they were before, so they lost a lot of money over only around 2 years. They had to start borrowing money to keep on buying the onions, until they owed so much money they couldn't pay back. In my opinion, I wouldn't continue buying the onions because I would know that they arent worth a lot of money anymore.

I wonder if Gopal’s family can pay back all their debt. Also, I wonder how they could pay their debt back.

In my opinion, I think the lesson is to always be grateful for what you have. Don’t take advantage of your privileges. For example, buying unnecessary things. In times like those, it’s nice to have your family because they can get you through it. Therefore, having a close bond with your family is important too. Additionally, like I was saying before, kids should NOT be worrying about debt, and how much money they have, or don’t have.

This quote is also related to my theme of debt/money issues, meaning lack of money. (Money issues) Gopal was at a nearby store when he saw 2 girls get out of a fancy car. When they went outside the shoe store, they had many, many bags! Gopal didn’t seem to mind, however what he did do was find a positive. He wasn’t sad, instead he said that maybe someday he could buy a nice pair of dark brown sandals. That’s a great thing being able to do that, I think everyone should learn how to be positive like that. It can get you through many tough times just like Gopal. Also, I was very shocked to read that an 11 year old boy is dreaming about a pair of sandals, and not planes, cars, candy, tv, etc! I felt so bad once I read this because I knew that the spoiled kids wouldn't even spare him a few dollars for him to buy shoes. Maybe one day Gopal's dream will become a reality.

I also have connection (T-T), from 2 different novels, Underground To Canada and Iqbal.

In Underground to Canada, when they were travelling to Canada on the various paths, they thought all people were bad. They even lost 2 of their friends because they got caught by the master. Even though, they were 2 young girls travelling on their own, they would always say that maybe their friends will find a way to escape. Additionally, through all the injuries given, they kept going for their goal to end up living as a free Canadian.

With Iqbal, he always said that he didn’t mind this or that, and he would always keep in mind his goal of escaping. He never stop believing that he and the others would escape, and that did happen. When he saw all of the other children working in factories, he knew he had to end this. So, he thought of a positive. He ended up joining the organization that freed him, and he wanted to help along.

In my opinion, if anyone can be positive in situations like those, they deserve an award. The lesson is to keep your head high, and never stop striving for your goal. Ignore all the negativity and the horrible situations and try to make it through. Instead, find a positive and be happy.

This quote relates to the theme because he dosn't want to leave the tree because he is afraid that if he leaves the tree he will forget his wonderful memories about him and his friends jumping from tree branch to tree branch. And the memories of him drawing his journal of all of his adventures.

“I want the bark to imprint on my palms just as it has imprinted in my heart”. I chose this powerful quote because I thought it has such a clear and meaningful meaning. Because, in my opinion this means he dosn’t want to leave the tree and he wants to have a clear memory of his favourite tree on his hand but he also has a clear memory in his heart. I have a T-S of this because I remember when I was at disney land I had such a great time I just wanted to remember it forever as I did in my heart. In my opinion the author wrote this to give a special message. That message was, never forget the things that are most important to you. I thought that was the author’s message because he wants to have a memory of it on his hand so whenever he looks at his hand he will remember all the fun times he had on that tree. One T-S I had was when I was very young about 3 years old I had the same thing happen to me as it happened to Gopal, I was torn away from my home because our house got caught on fire so we were forced to leave.

Fear

There can be fear everywhere especially in places where there is child labour. In brick factories people will be scared when they get there for the first time. Some people may feel like they have a totally different life when they get there, they may even feel like their in a different person and have thier life. When some people are in places where there are lots of people scared they can get scared too. T-w sometimes my brother gets scared of the dark, and maybe the people that go to brick factories get scared too. Maybe even a child or an adult with a phobia of something can not be as worse as a person going to a place where there is labour in the building.

I'm sure everyone is hungry at some point in life and people that can eat a lot of food like us everyday probably are not too much hungry but a person in labour or poverty is most likely always hungry because they do not get fed properly. That is why lots of people die of hunger because they do not get fed properly because they either do not have enough money to buy food or they are in labour. When I'm usually hungry it's probably not as bad for the people in poverty. When a person is in poverty and their Hungry its probably three times worse that our feeling n our stomachs when were hungry.

I think this quote " I will not walk around my own city with a note pinned to my Burgas as if I were a kindergarten child. I have a university degree! Her mom said" shows what my theme talks about women and girls are treated with no respect in their own country. I learned that women in Afghanistan are brave and want respect to walk and live. I think the author is trying to show that paveras mother has courage and she is brave and not all women are scared and stuck in there house. It's related because women need notes to walk round the city by themselves. So I think that with that quote it is powerful saying that they shouldn't have to stay inside or be scared to be outside for normal things like to get food and water.

I think that this quote "what are you doing on the street dressed like that? Said a taliban" shows that if they don't have different clothes or the taliban get made and hit them to punish the women and girls. I think that they have this quote to show that if they aren't dressed right they are pretty much dressed i in public. I learned that without the bugala and chador that they are showing their skin so I guess in their religion they can't show skin in public. I think that it is powerful and its saying if they don't have the proper cloths they should just stay inside. I think that they should be able to dress in whatever they want to where.

I think you did a great job overall!

For the first paragraph, you have a few minor grammar, and capatalization mistakes. Such as the name of the main character. Remember that names always start with a capital! Also, maybe try to focus a little more on punctuation, since there are a few run on sentences. Commas and periods are a great way for this solution!
On to your structure for paragraph one. I think it's great! However, maybe try to answer all the questions of who, what, where, when, why, and how. Explain further by diving deeper into the family's situation. Additionally, you should make sure each of the points are organized. Meaning that when you are speaking about woman's rights, list on the points from there. Don't keep going back to it after speaking about the novel and the family.

For your second paragraph, it was really good too!
I suggest for you to go back to the paragraph and read it over a few times. There are some grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes that you could easily fix. Remember to always keep in mind the grammar. It's what makes the paragraph cleaner and easier to read. It didn't make a lot of sense, but from what I did read, it was really good! I liked the quote you chose. Like I said at the beginning, maybe try to explain further into the situation. Don't forget to use a lot of support, it helps the structure of the paragraph!

If Gopal and his family had an education before, than the poverty cycle would end. The characters that are involved in the quote are Gopal and his family. Because Baba is telling them if they stay where they are, the money lender is going to take away their things because they are in debt. There is a text to world connection with the quote and theme. "We stay, we starve" -Baba. In other words, people in third world countries can't move to a more rich place because they don't have enough money. And they can't afford to buy food, so they starve. Think about it, people kill each other with violent thing and all that, but you can chose to kill them or not. On the other hand, with poverty, you can’t do anything about it, you can’t control if you are going to have food or not in poor countries, especially since they don’t have much money. This quote relates to this theme because my theme is on poverty. Gopal and his family has/is gone through poverty in this book throughout (so far) in the book. They haven’t really experienced having a full stomach. Until they get to Jama’s house. They finally get to not-be-hungry all day. If I was in Gopal’s position, I would feel really sad, weak, and hungry if I didn’t eat for a few days. It must be really hard for people around the world, like Gopal to have to live like this. I think the author was trying to show us what happens around the world. We may not know it, but kids and adults are dying everyday from hunger.

I think this is a really strong quote because it shows that kids like Gopal have never had a full stomach and eaten enough to satisfy themselves. The first time Gopal ate a full meal was at Jama's house. This kind of relates to me because, sometimes I eat too much then my stomach feels really strange and weird. But that's different.... I think the author was trying to show and tell us about all the poverty going in the world and around us. Food is a basic need that all humans need and if you don't have food, then you would die. Can you picture it? Well it does for me. I can just imagine the pink and white magnolia blossoms flowing in the wind on a bright sunny day reflecting the bright colorful colors!
This is something Harriet Tubman sees everyday. This is something that can make you feel nice inside. I think that it would get Harriet Tubman to maybe forget a bit of some of these bad poverty and child labour issues that her people go thru. One quote that supports the theme from this book "Always behind her were the footsteps of the master and the shouted calls of Miss Sarah." By doing this was showing courage because she ran away and when her master was chasing after her with the whip in her hand. Then she stayed in a pigs pen for 2 days. When her dad found her she went back home with him. A little bit after that she faced her master. "The whip cut into her bare thin back until it seemed as if her shoulder blades would crack under it. But she set her jaw and refused to cry out."
Another quote that supports the theme from this book is " ." I think that this showed courage because she stood up to her and let one of her people runaway. It also showed courage because she could have gotten really badly hurt but instead she put that aside and protected her people.

My first quote relates to the theme equality because it is basically saying woman can't defend themselves and they are not equal to men and they cannot protect themselves. The characters involved were Ma, Maureen, Bridget, and Margaret. When the Nolans were about to leave Ellis Island there was a police who stoped them and said a woman who is not unescorted can not leave Ellis Island. A text to media connection I had was from a tv show I was watching and this guy was saying that woman can not do things like firefighting and a police officer. I learned that everyone is equal and you should not treat people differently because of looks, race, or gender.

“it feels strange to have a full stomach”. I chose this quote because no matter how many times I read it over I still think “WOW” I can’t believe I thought I never eat enough food. But Gobal is around my age and has never had a full stomach, this makes me so sad when I just think about it. I had one T-T, when I was reading Iqbal it amazed me that only when those special customers come in that Iqbal and everyone, eats well, but all the other times they don’t eat well. I think the author was trying to say that no one should be in poverty. And it is just painful and wrong, because no one should know how it feels to be living under a bridge, or eating 1 or less meals a day, without shelter.
This quote relates to the theme because he dosn't want to leave the tree because he is afraid that if he leaves the tree he will forget his wonderful memories about him and his friends jumping from tree branch to tree branch. And the memories of him drawing his journal of all of his adventures.

“I want the bark to imprint on my palms just as it has imprinted in my heart”. I chose this powerful quote because I thought it has such a clear and meaningful meaning. Because, in my opinion this means he doesn’t want to leave the tree and he wants to have a clear memory of his favourite tree on his hand but he also has a clear memory in his heart. I have a T-S of this because I remember when I was at disney land I had such a great time I just wanted to remember it forever as I did in my heart. In my opinion the author wrote this to give a special message. That message was, never forget the things that are most important to you. I thought that was the author’s message because he wants to have a memory of it on his hand so whenever he looks at his hand he will remember all the fun times he had on that tree. One T-S I had was when I was very young about 3 years old I had the same thing happen to me as it happened Gopal, I was torn away from my home because our houe got caught on fire so we were forced to leave.

“The door squeaked on its ancient sagging hinges.” This quote makes an image in my mind, of an old, rickety door. It makes me think, "Why they can’t get a new door that doesn’t squeak or fall apart?" Maybe it's because they’re too poor to buy something else. I think that when Rashid’s dad died, they lost a lot of money. I think this is because his dad was probably working when he was alive, and none of the others in the family were. So they always depended on him for money for food and shelter and things like a new door. I connect this book to another book that i'm reading, called "The Butterfly Lion." It's about a boy named Bertie who lives in a forest with his mom and dad, and they can't buy anything that he wants because the only job that any of them have is that the dad farms cows.

"A big gold ring studded one thick finger." This quote makes me think of the ring and all its complexities, and why Rashid noticed so many things, like this ring, in the first place. I think that Rashid is so poor that when he sees things like that, he desperately wishes he could have enough money to buy things like the big, gold ring. It also makes me think, "Why is the man's finger so thick and fat?" Probably because he's rich, so he can get junk food and other things to make him that way. But where did he get all this money? Did he steal it? The book never mentioned anything about his job, only that he helps kids get to the rich families and play with their kids. But obviously, he didn't bring Rashid and Shari to the place he promised. But still, where does he get the money to buy things so expensive, to buy things like the big, gold ring? I relate to Rashid, when I see things I like, for example, some candy, and I can't get it because my mom says, "We're on a budget!"

“Can you do the same for me?” Boy’s Without Names seems to be a book about re-gaining money or at least escaping a debt. Gopal so far appears to be a smart and kind kid, he is troubled financial problems because his family needs to pay a debt that they can't afford. While Gopal was home, he was asked this quote. This quote looks like a small extra detail in the story but think about it, would gopal do the same for someone? When you are asked “Can you do the same for me?”, what would our answer be? In my opinion, this quote has more meaning the more you think, what I think the author is trying to say with this is that do you trust someone so much that you would do the same thing he/she does for you?

The quote “Just enjoy it.” is meaningful to poverty or at least Child Labour because when you have no time for anything in the future because of work, sometimes you just can’t can’t enjoy your moments. You can't "Enjoy it" when you're troubled with lack of money and time. When Gopal was told these words, a man Gopal calls Card-Man gave him a full deck of cards as he said this quote, Card-Man seems to be a strange character and from my experience with games and books, strange characters recur after a period of time. One connection (T-S) I had with this quote in mind is that when my mother died, I didn't take the time I realized I had with her. From my perspective with this quote is that it is really a message to you. When your in your life, you pass by the time with work, don’t regret wasting you time, save some for your special people like family.

1.) For the first quote, what is the major theme? Also, I think you some spelling mistakes that you may want to correct.

2.) For the second quote, you may want to add what the major theme is. You may want to add which major theme the quote relates to. Other than that, it's AWESOME!

Can you picture it? Well it does for me. I can just imagine the pink and white magnolia blossoms flowing in the wind on a bright sunny day reflecting the bright colorful colors! I think that it would get Harriet Tubman to maybe forget a bit of some of these bad poverty and child labour issues that her people go thru. What are some major themes discussed in your book?
some theme’s that were discussed in my book (the breadwinner) was the bombing that turned kabul a once beautiful city into ruins that our main character parvana once lived in and is now poor ever since the bombs and war raged into the city of kabul.

This quote related to equality and human rights because, in this part of the novel, there is a section where a man tells a woman that a unescorted woman is not allowed to leave Ellis Island. Being honest, at first I wasn’t too sure what the actual meaning of “unescorted” was. Therefor, I looked up the definition. According to dictionary.com, the word “unescorted” means a single person, accompanying another or others for protection. To me this quote is just saying that a woman isn’t capable to leave to another country without a man just because they are female. It seemed to me that the character, which was the mother did not seem to think much of it. This is probably because back then, in the early 1990’s, this type of discrimination went on alot and it was normal to woman who lived back then. But as years went by it became a serious matter so more people made it Reading and listening to this quote I have and can make so many different connections to matters that happen like this. It can simply even happen to you in school when people are picking sports teams, they pick boys instead of girls.

This quote isn't related to the theme "equality". This quote relates to personal challenges. It's very powerful to show the challenges people went through to have a better life. It makes me think how fortunate I am to live in Canada and feel safe with comfort and everything I need to have in life. In this part of the novel the Nolan family had to travel in a very uncomfortable boat with hundreds of other people all the way from Ireland to New York, just to live a better life and have a proper education. This Is a problem that still goes on in the world, and many people take advantage of the way they live not understanding how other people in the world live.

One of the themes in the book is Equality.

This theme is related to the book because every girl isn't treated right they have to be covered up and they are not aloud to go into shops. This quote "The girls in Afghanistan are the bravest women in the world” means that the women in Afghanistan are the bravest because of all the bombings and they aren’t aloud to go into shops or else they would get in trouble (Beat up). For example ,Parvana is one of the bravest little girl because she keeps on getting water and buying food for her family also going outside and walking on the streets. Text to world connection because there are many bombings in places. This is showing that they don't have any equality rights. Also, that they are very brave.

Another theme in the book is Differences.

This theme connects to the book because some people do not know how to read or write "Most people in Afghanistan cannot read or write. That means a lot because most people in Afghanistan cannot read or write. I have a T-S connection because here in Canada we know how to read and write and use technology for different things. This quote means a lot in the book because it shows that people were taken out if school and they don't know how to do these things at all. I think that Parvana connects to this quote because she has always wanted to go to school learn get a great education and meet new friends. This means that there are differences between Afghanistan and Canada.

This relates to slavery because, it means that they are treated so bad that they can't smile at someone. Harriet should smile because maybe they would "cut her some slack". One time I was sad becaus I was hurt and i felt like I couldn't smile.

"the bible was the slaves story book". This stood out because the meaning I get is that the bible is what makes them happy, or maybe it means that they know what there masters are doing and they want to learn more on how they should be treated. I think the message was very clear that it was about how they only live of what the bible says and like the stories in the bible and are very religious.

Also not to mention, the religious forms in the bible tell about how we shouldn't be being exploited for work and worldly needs. That's proof that even religion is against child labour.

I thought this was a laughing and playing is enough was a good quote because it is example to all kids that adults don't need video to be entertained like kids all they need is to see you having fun and a smile on your face.I thought this was connected to the theme because that's what Harriet probllby all Harriet wanted to see in the mister's baby.I also thought it was good because I connect to this because I think seeing me family laughing and playing all the time that's all I want to see in my family and I don't like seeing people I know upset or hurt.
