Learning through self/peer assessments.

This term, students have been 'learning how to learn'! The learning process is extremely important in everything we do. Two components of the BIG 6 Learning principles include self and peer assessments. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well all students have been able to assess themselves and their peers by referencing co-created criteria. They have been quite honest in their assessments. Our goal is for all students to become comfortable articulating their learning by the end of the term. Keep up the good work good everyone!

The story revolves around poverty and two young kids who are doing everything they can do find a better life for themselves.

In the last chapter, Viji, Arul and Muthu were looking around in a garbage dump. I can connect to this because I often see people looking in our garbage can. The reason they do this is so they can sell it for money. Returning bottles and cans to places like Superstore or Safeway earns you money.
I can also connect to when the girl stole Rukku and Viji's money because once, I went to a summer camp and my mom packed me snacks to last the day (full day camp). I was going to get them and I realized they were gone. I even looked in the garbage can and, on top of the pile were my snack wrappers. I was pretty upset and pretty hangry (hungry and angry together). Unfortunately, I was there the whole summer and they just kept stealing all my snacks.

I made a few connections to the book "The Bridge Home". I didn't have to think for the connections. They just popped in my mind like a P-90 shooting.

In one chapter I made a text to self connection. When Viji and Rukku met Arul and Muthu, they did not trust them at first. That relates to me because I don't meet a random stranger and befriend them immediately. I want to know some things about them like if they have a crime record or if they like cheese or not. Secondly, when Viji takes the book her teacher gave her ad tries to read it at night, I made a text to text connection. It reminds me of a book I read. I don't recall the title, but I remember this one part. When the main character takes out his photo under his covers, he tried to read the words on the back, but couldn't because its too dark.

In conclusion, these are my connections to the book. I will probably get more connections later on in the book.

Last time Viji went to a garbage dump to find materials to sell to this guy. I often see people looking for cans and bottles but they rarely find them. This story also reminds me of when my mom told me a story when she was younger. She never dine out at a restaurant because their family was poor. The story from The Bridge Home is telling us about poverty around the world.We can help by donating to charities and fundraisers. This story kinda reminds me of the movie Where Wild Things Are because in the movie the main character runs away from home because of his strict Mom making new friends just like Viji and Rukku. Near the end of the movie the character goes home.

I think I'm going to get more connections later on while reading the book.

Right before last GRA we had Mr Hong show us some pictures of things going on in India and it reminded me of a show I watch call Kindness Diaries. In one part of Kindness Diaries we went though India and people with basically nothing let him sleep in his house for no reason. Thats my connection with the book The Bridge Home.

In the book Viji, Arul and Muthu went to a dump to gather scraps and materials to use. My connection to this is, near marpole I usually see people get cans and water bottles to sell, at grocery stores. My second connection is that when Viji and Rikuu met tea shop auntie, my mom has told me lots of stories when she was younger, and one of the stories she told me was about the time she was in high school
and that her parents told her to find a job, to help support the family. My mom worked at a pharmacy and the employees at the pharmacy were very nice to her. Reading this book made me realize that people in poverty have a hard life and that you should always try and help them out, by even just giving them a dollar.

In the book "The Bridge Home", I made a few connections with the events and characters.

The first connection I made happens when Viji and Rukku go into the tea shop and see a stick of incense. People in Asia often have incense in their houses or shops. My second connection is when a girl begs Viji and Rukku for money, then steal their purse. One of the reasons that people don't give to beggars is because they're afraid that they're money will be stolen. The last connection I made is when Viji says that Rukku is good with working with her hands. At school, a group of people came over and told us about people with autism. They said that people with autism are a bit slow in some ways, but always have at least one thing that they're very good at.

"The Bridge Home" is a great book, and I hope to make many more connections while reading it.

Paragraph:

The story "The Bridge Home" is a story about two kids named Viji and Rukku who run away in order to get a better life. As absurd as this story may sound to some of us, there are a few parts in the story where you could still relate to.
Personally one of the parts I could relate to was the part where Viji and Rukku receives a gift from tea shop Auntie. They didn't know her too well yet she still gave a gift to them even though they were not too rich and had limited resources. This reminds me of the time I was in China for the summer and there was this amazing noodle place near the place I was staying. It was only my second time going there, and it was around lunchtime. The cook was making noodles, but was low on the ingredients and only had enough for less than a third of a dish. The cook saw us and said, "Sorry, we don't have enough for a full dish currently." My mom said it was alright but she was clearly upset since she had promised to bring me to this place for a few days. The cook recognized that decided to give what was left for free! My mom was extremely grateful and thanked him a lot. I was speechless the entire time, mostly because I was getting free noodles and partly because I couldn't speak fluent mandarin. This is my first connection.
I can also connect to when a girl had stolen the all of Viji's and Rukku's items and ran away. It reminded me of the time my friend stole my mechanical pencil and didn't give it back again. They had taken it with my permission but didn't return it after they took it home for the weekend. This resulted in me now having trust issues.

In conclusion, as unrealistic the concept may seem to me, I could still definitely connect to parts of it.

In "The bridge home", I've made a bit of connections.

In the book somewhere, it mentioned "Ganesh" which I related to when I read a book called "Follow the elephant" that also contained Ganesh, the god that looks like an elephant. My second connection is when there was a beggar in the book, and I also related that the Follow the elephant, when I remembered of how the book described many bodies on the roads that used to be beggars.

Overall, I love The bridge home and hope to keep reading it!

In the book, "The Bridge Home", Viji and her little sister, has to run from home to escape their dad. They face lots of challenges like finding shelter, food, and trying to get a job. I can relate to the whole story, When I went on vacation last Summer to Europe. At this huge shopping mall, I saw someone who was like Viji. She was on the middle of the street, and was begging for money. I didn't know what happened, she might of ran from home, or her parents died or left her, or her whole family is in poverty. The thing is that she was very young. In Europe, there are many homeless people everywhere, including some people selling toys, useful items, and Gucci bags which were fake. The only things that actually were useful were the umbrellas which you can use.

At school, we are reading a book called "The Bridge Home" and I have a connection to share.

In the book, Viji and Rukku run away from home because the dad is to abusive and they want to be free from him. In the book, Viji, Arul and Muthu were looking for cans and bottles inside the garbage can. I can connect to this because sometimes I see people looking for bottles and can as well. I think most of the people look for bottles or cans to get money back from any recycling depot. That is the only connection I have at the moment. I don't think I will ever run away from home.

An connection to the story is when Viji and Rukku go to the trash heap and get scraps to sell, i thought about when our family did the same things and gave in cans to the depot, we saw some people in rags with shopping carts filled with cans. Those people, like the children in the book, make their living from those cans.

Last we left off in our book The Bridge Home Viji Arul and Muthu we’re searching a heavily trashed dump for something of use to them I can connect to this because I’ve seen someone who takes some garbage in my building and makes a use for it. I can also relate to it because there is a homeless man by my moms work and sometimes if she has the time will by him lunch sort of like tea shop auntie giving Viji and Rukku items. I also relate to it because they had to find jobs to survive and wh3n my dad was younger he had to get a job when he was 9-10ish so he got a paper route and walked a girl home from school. I’m sure I will make more connections though out the book but these are all the connections I had made as of now

As soon as i started to read this section of this book, or rather had it read to me and the rest of my class and another class connections started to pop into my head. Some of these were as minor as hey a bridge Ive seen a bridge before to ones a bit deeper such as memories of seeing homeless people going through trash cans to photos ive seen of the living conditions of poor children in india and other 3rd world nations. Another connection i have is going to the downtown east side of vancouver and just seeing a bunch of homeless people (non of them seem to be children though) either begging or just kind of sitting down and staring at cars drive by. ive also seen groups of homeless people rummaging through trash piles and talking to each other which is somewaht similar to the "gang" viji and ruku are in in this book. In conclusion I cant make many connections to this book as i grew up in a first world country in a nieghbourhood with very little poverty and have only traveled to develpoed nations. Its hard for me to imagine living like that due to this fact.

NO CLEAN WATER. this would be a shock to most kids around the world but unfortunately it was what I put up with back in my home town in the heart on Iran.

That has to relate with the text to self I have to this book, Viji, Arul and Muthu don’t have clean water and I didn’t always either. In Iran whether your rich or poor it doesn’t matter- no matter what you don’t not have clean water. This also seems to be the case in this story because it takes place in India. A text to text I have is to a book that we read last year as a class- Amal Unbound. It also took place in India just like this story, it also showed how lower castes were. A text to work I have is the fact that this book shows the reality of abusive parents and how that happens around the world even in 2019.

In conclusion when reading this book we should keep in mind all the messages about our world it has.

Some connections that I can make towards the story of "The Bridge Home" is that in the story, the weird man who gives them the stick and the newspapers asks Viji " What's your name, pretty girl?" A text to self connection of mine is that once, I was at a skytrain station and a man came up to me and asked that same question. I was terrified just like Viji was because I had been raised to learn to not talk to strangers. One text to world connection I can make is how out in the world, 30%-40% of the world's population is the amount of people living in poverty just like Viji and Rukku an many others in the "The Bridge Home" are living in poverty.

1 or 2 connections relating to the story, "Bridge home" is that how the older sister Rukku making a deal with Viji, that deal was that if Viji stayed quite about them running away, Rukka would give her a sweet. I made a connection to this because when my brother and I were younger, my brother would tell me that he would give me something whenever he was doing something i consider bad. He would generally tell me that he would give me candy too or do whatever i want with him. Another connection i had with this book was when the two sisters accidentally broke the glass cup they were drinking some sorta of milk from. The owner of the shop became very mad at the two sisters and they offered to work it off. I made a connection to this because when i was little I would always look for a toy aisle in stores, one day i was playing with the toys ( still in the boxes ) and accidentally tore the cardboard box. I can vividly remember the fear of getting in trouble surge through my body and i cant imagine how Rukku and Viji were feeling.

To be honest, I have a lot of connections to this book because I am from that part of India. But here are some of the main connections.

When Viji and Rukku wanted to run away from their home because of their father, it reminded me of this book called "Run Away Home" My mom used to read that book to my cousin when I was little. I don't think it was related to family issues, but the name reminded me of it.

Another one is that in one of the chapters, Viji wanted Rukku to get on the bus but she didn't so she got her on by saying that she would give her a sweet. What are some connections I can make to the storyline? I could make 2 connections around thh book we are reading call the bridge home. When they introduced their father I thought of the people around the world who have abusive parents or abusive wife or husbands that hurt them for no reason. Abuse is a real problem and you should never abuse someone since your having a bad day or you're angry at them, just talk to them about the situation you're in.
A connection I made is was when Vigi, Arul and Muthu were searching in the dump looking for something that they could sell for money or trade or use the thing they find for theirselves, and I sometimes see people looking for things in garbage cans like the big ones for so,etching they can use.

In the book we are currently reading " Bridge Home", there have been many grateful moments and sad times as well. It is about an older sister named Viji and a younger sister named Rukku, when we begin the book we find our main characters in a struggle to survive, with limited food/ money and water they begin a new adventure. With lots of things, we as kids can relate to.

I can easily relate to the part when Viji and Rukku run off with only a few of the many basic needs of survival and don't return home, for example when Viji and Rukku attempt to get some money and food from the tea shop aunty they meet in the early chapters, this sort of reminds me of the time I went on a 7-day camping trip with complete strangers/ kids and we were only given some basic supplies and told to survive the harsh night before heading back to the cabins which had held no commonly needed supplies. So we needed to find our own food and water, at one point I figured out how to filter the nearby lake water, by creating double-layer stones over the sand in a zip lock bag. My friends also discovered how to make a somewhat makeshift tent and kitchen wear using hardened leaves and bark, When we finally ran out of basic needs we were considered dead, so the trip then ended, to be clear no one was hurt and no one died.

MY CONNECTIONS TO THE BRIDGE HOME:
- I've seen people on the streets in the same living conditions as Viji and Rukku (text to self)
- I know that many people across the globe live in poverty (text to world)
- reminds me of Follow the Elephant because it takes place in India (text to text)

Currently, I don't have any DEEP connections with this book. So everything is just minor connections I made with The Bridge Home.
My text to self-connection was when Viji and Rukku set up their shelter. In my head I immediately pictured a little shelter that uses a tarp for the roofing. I know that many homeless people that live here in Vancouver use tarps to protect themselves from the constant rain. Woah, another connection...
The text to world connection I made came from Viji and Rukku being in poverty. I learned that many people all over the world live in poverty. Which is terrible, everybody should be able to go to school and eat three full meals a day. Every time I think about this I feel very fortunate to be living with everything I've ever wanted...
Finally, I have the text to text connection. This book reminded me of Follow the Elephant. I can't remember specific details but I know that both The Bridge Home and Follow the Elephant take place in India.

Global Read Aloud: My connections to The Bridge Home

The Bridge Home is an inspirational story that contains joy, excitement, sadness, and most importantly, courage. These past few days, we have been reading it with Mr. Hong’s class. This book is really inspiring because it opens up about a sisters’ life after running away from home in a city in India. Every chapter of it is a new challenge and obstacle they have to overcome in order to survive in the harsh and busy city.

The connections that you make while reading a book can help you understand the information better and can assist you in feeling the type of pain, love, anger, fear, etc. that the characters in the story share with you.

A text to self connection that I have made while reading The Bridge Home is that when I was young, I would never do anything that my sister told me to do unless she bribed me with a toy or a piece of candy. I didn’t like her bossing me around, but if it was for a good purpose, I would happily take it the offer up. In the book, Viji had to offer Rukku a sweet in order to get her into the bus.

A text to world connection that I have is that many places in the world don’t have the same circumstances and necessities as us. Many countries are suffering from dehydration, too much pollution, and many other issues that we would never experience living in Canada. The city that the book takes place in is called Chennai. It is located in Southern India. The people living there have a limited supply of jobs, clean water, and money. Many children can be found sleeping in the streets, looking for jobs, and other things that can be unimaginable to us foreigners.

Overall, in the few Global Read Alouds that we have had, I have made an ample amount of connections to the story. These connections will help enhance my learning and help me develop my understanding of the story and many more to come.

This week we read 'the Bridge home' and I have a connection to it.

My connection to 'the Bridge home' is that I can't see my dad every day. They ran away from home so can't see their parents. But I never ran away from home but I can't see my dad every day because my dad lives in Korea to work. He comes here only twice a year. But viji and rukku don't miss their dad but I do. But i think they will miss him too soon. And I don't have anymore connections with their situation. :)

for our global read aloud this year were reading "the bride home". "the bridge home" is about two girls named Rukku and Vijji. they’re sisters who decide to run away from home. something that I made a connection to is the setting of the story.

in march, I travelled to Cambodia. cambodia is located on the southeast side of Asia, next to Thailand. during my trip, I saw many families and kids living in poverty. many kids didn’t go to school and instead sold souvenirs to tourists on the streets. this reminded me of how Rukku and Vijji are living in poverty, and how they’re struggling to survive. another connection I would have is when the two sisters went to the garbage dump. sometime In the summer, I went to the recycling depot in Richmond to throw away some things. I went with my brother and it smelt really bad. this reminded me of how vijji said the garbage dump stinked.

In conclusion, “the bridge home” is a story that’s quite intriguing and I’m really enjoying it so far.

viji and ruck are struggling to find food and shelter at this point. how would it feel for you to feel or live like this? Not very good probably. plus having the responsibility of a little sister.
This book reminds me of the breadwinner because the girls have to find jobs to support themselves just like the mail character.
This book makes me a little sad because these young girls are suffering because they're family couldn't protect or provide for them.

today i am going to talk about the connections i made with the book "the bridge home". my first connection(text to text) is when the girl in the alley took all of viji and rukkus money. this reminded me of a part of another book i am reading(radio boy) where spike has to steal radio supplies from a hospital.my second connection(text to self) is when viji and rukku take shelter underneath a old bridge. it reminds me of this one time when me and my parents drove over a VERY old bridge to get to a hotel. my final connection(text to world) is the constantly shown fact that there are so many children in poverty in india(and the entire world),my connection is that it's true and that i've seen it firsthand by visiting places like mexico and hawaii. i hope that you all have enjoyed my post about connections i made to the book "the bridge home".
