Connecting with students from abroad!

Today, students reviewed learning intentions and completed their self-assessments for the Ecosystems project they just started. The majority of students marked down 'RED LIGHTS' for the majority of the learning intentions which is great because it showed them they had many new things to learn throughout this unit! Mr. Fisher, Mr. Collins, Mrs. Chohan, and I can't wait to see the learning that happens! #thelearningneverstops

What is natural selection? At first when I first read about natural selection I was very discombobulated. I had no idea what it was. After watching the video, I have some background knowledge now.

The difference between natural selection and common descent is that in natural selection, nature chooses which plant/animal has good traits and discards the plant/animal with bad traits. Also, in natural selection, if an animal is perfectly suited for its environment, then its offspring will be maladapted. Genetic variability makes each animal slightly different. Some may adapt to th change or some may be very unadapted. Natural selection is the process by which random evolutionary changes are choosen for by nature in a consistent and orderly way.

On the other hand, in common descent, every organism in a particular group of organisms has the same ancestry. Evolution from a common ancestor is thought to have involved several speciation events as a result of natural selection, such as geographical separation. In other words, common descent happens as a result of natural selection.

In conclusion, natural selection is nature's process of choosing which organisms are adapted to their environment and which aren't, whereas common descent is where a certain group of animals share a common ancestor.

@ Adrian - Great job! I liked how you gave examples to support your idea. But, can you expand on the meaning of common descent and natural selection? All I see are examples, which are great! As long as you add a definition before the examples, it would be more clear to the reader. Otherwise, great visualization and examples!

Wow! My plant is really tall and grew really fast. I am so proud of you, grass. When I prepared to collect my second plant and bring it to school to do my homework. Hmm… Why is this plant so short, and ugly? What is the problem of this plant.

After I watched this video, I realized the reason of the plant. This is about the common descent theory. Common descent theory is when a organism or a plant grow. It all started the same species, time, or kinds.The result will change and have random results.It will change and there're plenty of reason. You can know or predict the future and the result. I put the first plant beside the window. So it will grow faster and better. I put the second plant in my room, so it won't grow tall or big. That's the reason why.

Natural selection. Interesting, pictures in mine. I am visualizing them. Are they about animals? I am wondering about facts of growing. Fact, they are real, must things. A grass seed it will grow to grass, these are fact. It helps farmers too. If they put random seeds in the soil, there will have different plants. But will still can guess the detail things of the tomatoes, they will have random sizes, weight, colors, and different tomatoes.

Even then, it still is important for us to learn about Darwin’s theory. It may be confusing when you first look at it, but it sure is amazing when you understand it.

What even is natural selection anyways? The theory combines mutation, migration, genetic drift, and evolution to explain this big, thoughtful question. Basically, the organisms who are well-suited for the environment will survive better than those who are not. Some might be eaten, and others might die in different ways. After that, that specific type of organism who survives better will be able to pass on their genes to their children, resulting in more well-suited organisms than not-suited ones. As this process repeats for the whole history, we will have more and more distinct and different organisms, each being well-adapted to their own environment.

Common descent is a similar idea that overlaps with this theory. It literally means that all organisms are descendants of one single ancestor, like its name. If every organism is made different just to suit their habitat, then that means that we will only have one common ancestor. A plant could have the same ancestor as we do! WOW! I finished watching the video and I am amazed. I never knew about any of this and all of this is new to me.

From my understanding, common descent is a description of how evolution in nature works. The idea is that we all come from the same common ancestor, that all organisms are just evolved off of a common ancestor.

Now common decent also works with natural selection. As organisms reproduce, there are always ones that look different from others. Now natural selection would choose the ones best to fit the environment. The other ones would probably go along the food chain. This is how nature develops such beautiful creatures that live in their perfect atmosphere.
In conclusion, I am still learning about this so my explanation might not be accurate but that is my general understanding!

Common descent describes how, in evolutionary biology, a group of organisms share a most recent common ancestor. There is "massive" evidence of common descent of all life on Earth from the last universal common ancestor. And for the Natural selection is one of the basic mechanisms of evolution, along with mutation, migration, and genetic drift. So what is the difference between Common descent and Natural selection ? Well the difference between them is that Common descent is the evolution of its own family, and for the Natural selection it is an evolution because of the surrounding. Here are an example for the Natural selection, so let's pretend that in a habitat there are red bugs and green bugs. The birds prefer the taste of the red bugs, so soon there are many green bugs and few red bugs. The green bugs reproduce and make more green bugs and eventually there are no more red bugs. And for the Common descent, I can't think of any thing that can discrabe my thinking.

OK, so what is exactly natural selection is? What exactly is natural selection? SO, In my definition, I think it basically just mean that some organisms died soon because of other organisms eat them , and some organisms might be died in different way. After, some lucky organisms who's not been eaten will be able to produced children to produced more organisms. And it will repeated forever. So that is why we can see many organisms died but we still can see this kinds of species again.

Let's move on to Common descent now. It is pretty simple,Common descent describes how, in evolutionary biology, a group of organisms share a most recent common ancestor. There is "massive" evidence of common descent of all life on Earth from the last universal common ancestor.( it just means that organisms have one common ancestor.) so many organisms might not look the same but they only have one common ancestor.

They said that you can't get complexity and order from random chaos alone. Which contradicts the fact that animals' bodies are all orderly while descent with modifications is random variations.

But, a guy called Charles Darwin proved them wrong.He studied nature and went around the world in a ship while documenting and collecting different species of animals. He noticed that some animals that were found on the islands couldn't been found anywhere else in the world, but there were species that looked familiar to the original. He believed that this was only caused by common descent and went around to prove it.

Charles Darwin proved that we can change the order of nature by selecting the surviving and not-surviving. Now, this fact has been studied numerous times in nature and the science lab and what WAS an idea is NOW a fact. This information has led to countless new breakthroughs and has led scientists to really concentrate on common descent.

WOW, that video blew my mind I can’t stop watching it, it’s so entertaining and enjoyable I can’t believe it! And now I have collected some crucial information about Common Descent and Natural selection!

Alright, do you know what Natural selection is? Probably not! Ok well here’s what I think Natural selection is in my words! Natural selection is basically what Mother Nature says can last for how long and when the time is for it to go and help something else like let a certain type of animal or bug eat you so that they can survive, if that makes sense!

Common Descent is the scientific way of using biology to indentify what circle this belongs to and why! It’s like a turtle in Canada and it get take a way on a pirate boat and the turtle starts a new life on a new island or other place! And we can now use common descent to find all the answers!
And I think this topic is very interesting and we should talk more abou this in class and start a conversation!

Have you ever heard of the words“Natural Selection and Common Descent?” Well for me, I have no idea until after I watched the video!

The common descent is about all the life on earth related. We descended from a common ancestor through the long process of descent with modification over many many generations. Finally, a single main species created. Common descent can be known as a conclusion based on the collection of observable facts. Farmers have been taking wild plants and animals, through their selective breeding, they sculpted the original wild form and turn it into a new domestic form. This way it’s much more suited for human use and consumption. The steps of the process are really slow but also simple. For example, every single plant produces a hundred seeds, most of them will grow really similar, since it’s the same species but for a few of them it might be slightly different. Just like the variation ones. Bigger smaller size, the different taste and so on...... Usually, other variation would be highly valued. For example, the ones with more juicy and sweeter leaves. If the framer only uses the best plants to reproduce and creates seeds for next term. Those small positive changes may lead to a brand new species.

Now to talk about natural selection. An easy way to explain can be the theory of evolution. But not far enough, when animals parents produce a variety of offspring, others nature animals simply decide which of those variations get to live in reproduce and which do not. Over multiple generations, creatures became more fit with their specific environments. The person who finds the regulation named Darwin put his idea in mid-1800, the “Natural Selection.” It actually started out as a mere idea is now officially an observable fact. In conclusion, natural selection is the process of random evaluation changes selects by nature. In a non-random way.

Natural selection and common decent... Well this is going to be a tough PAR... Okay, common decent is when an parent has kids and those kids behave slightly differently than everyone else. So say if your dad likes everything red and your mom may like everything blue, you may like things green but your sibling likes things green. What I am trying to say is that we are raised to be similar but we all are very different from each other.

Natural selection is when an animal naturally chooses a different animal to eat and then the animal that wasn’t eaten reproduces and it goes on and on. Then the kids on that animal either reproduce or get eaten and the whole thing starts over again.

Common decent is caused by natural selection because the animals that survive are able to reproduce and give birth to different kids and then the cycle starts again. The ones that survive are usually the ones that are normal like the ones before them and then the kids of the normal ones are more likely to be normal. Not that being non-normal is a bad thing!

Mind blown! I knew nothing and I mean nothing about commen descendants or descents with modification.let first talk about commen descendants. In 1809 till 1882 there was a naturalist named Charles Darlin. When he started his career he journeyed across oceans. And during that time he noticed that there were animals that were only found on a spicific islands but looked and acted very similarities to animals in the near by contenant. So many of the vegetables that we eat are all of the same plant just different modifications of that one plant.

Woahh! Wow that more more interesting than I expected.

So from what I’ve observed there are a few differences with Common Decent and Natural Selection. Let’s start off with commont decent. Common Decent is when decent with modifications changes a creature step by step, allowing it to evolve as time passes. For example, like the video said with the tortoises, a tortoise traveled to an island and laid it’s eggs. When the babies were born, they were slightly different but still similar to their mother, but as time passes and they reproduce and their children reproduce, and on and on, the tortoises begin to evole and develop abilities to fit in with the island better. However natural selection is more different. Instead of evolving in a adaptive way. Natural selection is more of when nature randomly selects, which organisms should be modified.

So in conclusion, common decent is when a creature reproduces and their children are modified to fit in more with the engiorment, allowing them to adapt while natural selection is when nature randomly selects creatures to be modified when they reproduce in a non-orderly manner.

Ok so this video has really nice information in it about the difference between common descent and natural selection. Common descent is that things are all related on earth, that they're children may not look the same form each other and there parent. Natural selection is that works with common descent to those wich kind of animals are better to live in thet areas.

A very interesting subject, that I didn’t know about.

First we must ask ourself what is Natural Selection. Natural selection is basically the process by which a random evolutionary changes are selected for by nature in a consistent, orderly, non-random way. You also may be wondering what Common decent. Common decent for example, image if you grow 15 pieces of lettuce growing. Your goal is to get the best piece of lettuce. You find the best lettuce out of the 15 pieces and take that lettuces seeds, and grow more plants. Then you find the best lettuce out of that and take its seeds to grow more. You get the idea. Explaining an example is the best way for me to explain what I’m trying to get at.

Now that differences that I see between these two. Natural selection is not by you, it’s by the natural selections that are made. Common decent is when you pick the best ones inseam of it happening naturally without your help. Can you see the differences?

Hopefully if you didn’t already know what it was, then you could understand it from what I just explained. Hopefully you could understand what I am saying. (Lol)

In our world, there are many phenomenons that we as a human race are not able to unlock, through this many scientific theories are used as a way to further our understanding and create a path to lead. No matter what there will always be questions and mysteries that we cannot come to comprehend, therefore having us use our own knowledge to forge a pathway using nothing but what we find. Theorizing is quite the endeavor as we have to take a subject or question that we have no implication, and squeeze out little clues to slowly come to a conclusion that we only find logical. If one were to forge an answer using absolutely nothing, that would be a theory, but not one people would believe.

The concept of common decent is a deep theory on it's own. Common decent is the theory made by Charles Darwin. The theory explaining common decent is based on birth and evolution; All beings have a common decent meaning, all beings come from the same being. The way farmers do selective breeding is a way to describe common decent. If a farmer were to plant seeds from a certain weed, plant, tree or flower, they would look at all of the creations made through decent with modification, and find the best breed to plant more seeds until they find a result that they are pleased with. Many plants come from a common decent as they were created from selective breeding with the same starting plant. Common selection is a theory explaining the similarities in different species.

Natural selection is one of the most complicated theories I have heard, as the theory could be completely false, but it may be very correct as well. Natural selection explains why animals are born with features to survive in their habitat. Nature is a deadly being that may end a life in a matter of seconds if one is not prepared for the endeavors to survive. A bug may have been given life to, only to perish within seconds due to a superior animal. Natural selection is what keeps this in order by choosing which biotic existence will be birthed with the capability to survive, and which ones will be discarded. Natural selection explains how all animals in the world are able to survive, while some animals are not bale to.

When Charles Darwin created the theory of common decent, there still remained a question. How were animals born capable to survive in their habitat? Darwin looked to the concept of common decent through selective breeding as an answer. Farmers chose which breed was the best of of multiple subjects, and continued to breed. Through this Darwin came to theorize that Nature was capable of selecting breeds as well, which formed the theory known as natural selection.

Natural selection is a major theory in science, it also represents how diverse the world can be. Sadly, it is still a theory, which means it may be inaccurate. It still is important for us to learn about natural selection. It is a perplexing progress but it will be interesting to learn.

To get deeper into the subject we will talk about natural selection more. This philosophy includes mutation, migration, genetic drift, and evolution. Furthermore, the organisms that are suited for the environment will survive longer than others who are not. For instance, animals that are not suitable for an environment will be eaten or killed faster. Moreover, that specific type of animal who would survive better will be able to pass on their genetics to their children. As this evolution repeats, we will have more diverse and different organisms. Since all the none-suitable organisms are being killed, you would think nature is cruel, but in reality, the other organisms are killing it to feed themselves.

Common descent is identical to the first theory except it means everything is related. If this theory is true, it means a little plant would have the same ancestor as us!

All in all, common descent and natural selection are similar, and both are very interesting to discuss about. There may be many inquires about this theory in the future, that is why it is critical to learn.

Natural selection and common decent are very different why do I say this well because natural selection is when to be selected for either a environment or for personal preference, the reason i say this is because polar bears didn't chose to live in the ice its like they were chosen to live there. Dogs all are the same except they have different breeds this can be because of common decent because all dongs have similarities but later on they evolve into different breeds.
