TRAITS OF GOOD WRITING

3D Snowflake Inquiry

Today, students learned about the writing process. Today, we focused on 'ORGANIZATION'. This is one of the traits of good writing. The students are quite comfortable with basic paragraph writing and so we will be moving on to writing a standard 5 paragraph essay. We will be learning about the structure, they will see many examples of essays, and will practice writing their own from now until the holidays. Each student will have an opportunity to go through the feedback process with their peers and Mr. Hong over the next 3 weeks.

1.) MATH:

You will have a short quiz on comparing fractions tomorrow. Watch this video to prepare for it. It will be straightforward. If you have been doing the homework over the last couple weeks, you will do very well.

2.) FRENCH:

Translate all words on paper. This will be your ticket into the classroom tomorrow morning. There will be a few iPads in the hall and you will have to upload it to your FreshGrade before entering the class.

Using the Big 6 Learning Principles, explain how you learned how to make 3D snowflakes today.

This is some extra feedback specificcally for Mr. Hong. I have noticed when translating the French vocabulary that was provided to us today, that there was a small grammatical error that might effect some people. Le jour is supposed to be written as Le jours, as jour is not a plural word, and the intended translation is the days.

@ Unaid - I think le jours is improper grammar. Jour is the meaning of “day”. Le/La/Les means “the”. Le jour means the day. Les jours means the days. If you would have to make jour into jours, you would also need to change le to les.

Today we learned that on how to make snowflakes out of paper and we also had to finish one by when lunch starts. We also had to make one for are music teacher Ms. Chang and we also had to make one for are class. We didn’t really had a learning intention but we had feedback from the video by watching it over and over again so my partner and I could just memorize it. We knew that we achieved success because we tried are best and never gave up. I am also are looking forward to doing something similar about this kind of art work.

LEARNING INTENTION: I can work collaboratively with my classmate to create 3D snowflakes.
SUCCESS CRITERIA: Watch the video and follow the steps. If your snowflake looks like the one in the examples in either the video or the photos then you have succeeded.

Now you know how our class used the first two steps of the Big 6 Learning Principles to make 3D snowflakes. I made a snowflake myself, indeed I did. I read the WikiHow article and made one. It was actually really easy to make by took some time to cut the rectangles into squares. I found it easy so I understood everything and didn’t find the need to ask any questions. Actually, I did ask Mr. Hong if he could help put the snowflake together because that part was a little bit confusing... But that’s all I did to for asking questions and such. I compared my snowflake to others so I guess that can count for peer assessments. My snowflake also looked like the ones in the photo so I think I did well. I didn’t receive any descriptive feedback so I’m not sure on how to improve my snowflake. I still think it could be better though... To take ownership of my learning I put up the snowflake in the classroom to show my learning so that everyone can see it.

That’s how I used the Big 6 Learning Principles to make snowflakes!

Oh! Oops! Sorry! I always said to my partner Nathan. He is really good partner...But I am not. I am always a trouble on DIY stuff! The learning intention, I can make a 3D snowflake with my partner. I know when I achieved success because I always watch back the video to make sure I succeed base on the DIY project. And obviously base on the success criteria. However, I think the true success is when you can collaborate with your partner without arguments. I am sure it is pretty hard.

Ask questions, a really important strategy in The Big 6. Asking questions can increase our background knowledge, but it could also let us succeed. I absolutely did ask questions. How can I make it better? How can you make it, can you teach me? And of course I asked myself several questions. Why do I fail? Why am I so bad at doing it? I want to give up....... I have asked my partner some questions. Fortunately, he can answer me some questions, but not all of them. I finally take out my iPad and did some research. MC is so important.

Of course I did engage self/peer assessments. They are important feedback. My partner and Mr. Hong gave me feedback. Sometimes I didn't fold properly and sometimes I can't even use glue properly. And finally, my first draft is a piece of trash. Self/peer assessments really help. You could tell when you compare the different between first snow piece and the final piece. I surely improve.

I have received some descriptive feedback, and even more specific feedback from Mr. Hong and the website. It surely helps a lot. It made my draft seems better and better. Feedback are positive comments, they can help you improve. I have tried to use my scissor improperly and almost destroy my snowflake.... It actually did......

I take my ownership after I done it. I successfully finished my project and achieved the goal and reach the learning intention. The most challenge thing is I can't use my tools properly and destroy some part of our project. And remade it....... The most fun thing and I most enjoyed is the activity. You can learn how to make a 3D snowflake and..... Train our fingers? I am pretty sure it is a fun activity and I hope we will have more time to do more fun activities!

Wow, they look amazing! Hmmm, why is our snowflake so floppy???

Today, we made 3D snowflakes during class. The learning intention was to create two 3D snowflakes for our class and Ms.Chung based on a few videos and/or success criteria.

Everybody knew that we only achieved success if our snowflake looks the same as the snowflakes in the videos/pictures. At first, ours didn't, but we switched to a different style of snowflake, and it was easier so we started doing that kind.

I didn't ask many questions to teachers, but I talked a lot with my partner to ask things like "Is this good enough?" or "How many do we need to do?" and so on.

I monitored my comprehension by watching videos multiple times in order to really get what we are supposed to do. Some parts were harder than others, so I just kind of followed my partner (Olivia) to see how to do it.

One person who gave me feedback was Mr. Hong by saying that we should add some color to our snowflake. Well, that was both good and bad. The good part was that we could make it a lot more colorful and it was easier to make two snowflakes instead of one. The bad part is that Ms. Chung only wanted fully white snowflakes, so we couldn't give any of ours to her. Oh well.

To take ownership of our learning, we have to know what we did. So, at first, we followed the learning intention and started making practice snowflakes based on a video that Mr. Hong had posted. The first snowflake was a little too complicated so we started on the second kind and completed it. Afterwards, we asked questions to each other, making sure we both knew what to do (My partner and I) and then had Mr. Hong do a peer-assessment and check the first part of it. Then we started making more of those parts. Later, Mr. Hong said to add some color and make some more sections for our snowflake so we worked faster because lunch was coming up. Then, we finished right before the bell rang with our snowflakes looking only a little bit wobbly.

"All right! Today we will be creating 3D snowflakes!" Proclaimed Mr. Hong. "3D---wait, what? How do you make those? I'm confused. Can anyone monitor my comprehension and tell me what we are making? (No, I did not really ask that.)

The learning intention for the art mini-inquiry was: I can create a 3D snowflake on my own/with a partner according to criteria. Another learning intention could be: I can be creative and research different types of 3D snowflakes to construct.

I knew that I had achieved success when I followed the success criteria, and when I had finished making the paper snowflake. Another way I found out that I had reached success was when my snowflake was displayed on the wire.

In the beginning, I asked my partner what colours we would use and what design we desired. I didn't really have any questions, because I understood all the instructions, with one exception. I didn't know how to staple all the snowflakes together so I had to ask for assistance.

I engaged in a peer assessment with my partner; whatever he folded I would make aure that it met my criteria. I did the same with myself, and our soon after snowflaked turned out quite well.

I didn't receive any feedback, but I knew my partner did because I was the one giving him feedback. I got feedback from Mr. Hong (it wasn't actually feedback since he told it to everyone); he told us to experiment with different numbers of snowflakes.

I took ownership of my mini-inquiry today by tinkering around with different colours and sizes, as well as different amounts of snowflakes. I also 'owned my learning' by helping other students in need.

In conclusion, by using the Big 6 Learning Principles, I was able to collaborate with my partner and make a successful 3D snowflake. Yay!

Today we made 3D snowflakes and the learning intention is I can work collaboratively with my partner to create two 3D snowflakes for our class and Ms.Chung based on the link Mr.Hong give you. You can know if you are ready by see if your final snowflakes look like any of the 3D snowflakes that Mr.Hong make. To achieve the success, we have to make sure that we pay attention to where we cuts. During this project I have ask some question to my partner so I can get a better comprehension of how to do do the 3D snowflake. At first we try to make the snowflake that Mr. Hong show us, we try some and find out it is too difficult. So we decide to make something easier. And finally we managed to make one white one, But then Mr.Hong give us feedback for adding more color so it will be more beautiful. So we choose the colour blue and pink to make it more colourful, and it really it look better though too bad Ms.Chung only want the colour white. But I still had a lot of fun during this project.

Today at school, Mr. Hong's class and Mr. Fisher's class made paper snowflakes which were 3D and looked cool. When we started, I was discombobulated because it's hard to make to me at the start. But later, the success critereia was not that hard. The folding and cutting. Probably the most annoying part was the turning rectangle into square. The learning intention of the art activity was " I can make a 3D snowflake similar to the one on the 'screen'.

My group, me and Nick when we started, it was fine. then I realized that if I cut too much lines, then the gluing at the end will be difficult. Then in another snowflake, I had to redo it twice because I cut it wrong. Then I realized that it was because I folded the paper too less. Next time, I will make more flakes which are cooler because I want to look out in the open for cooler flakes.

Can’t you believe it’s already December? What do you relate December with? Guess what......? Today we had our first art inquiry on making a snowflake. The learning intention is: I can work collaboratively with my partner to create 3D snowflakes. The success criteria are to follow the instructions step by step to create good-looking snowflakes.

We first watched the video a serval times and tested it out on some white paper. Ahhhh......The most complicated part was actually cutting part. It’s tricky, isn’t it? I just couldn’t understand how to cut it properly. So I used the strategy “Monitoring Comprehension.” I discussed with my partner and we decided to watch the video a few more times. We finally started our making our very first snowflake as we got comfortable with the steps. Each time when we finished making a piece, we compared them by doing some “Self/peer assessment.” We gave each other “descriptive feedback” in the areas we can improve. Wow! I can tell we’re getting better and better every single time.

What I noticed more and more it that the “Big 6 Principals” is really helpful for our learning. It guides us toward success.

The Learning Intention of this mini art inquiry is: I can create different types of 3D snowflakes for our class and for Ms. Chung.

I knew I follow the instruction(criteria) When I was making the snowflakes withy partner. Why?

At first, I ask question, I ask my partner how can I exactly make a snowflakes, or somethings I am not sure of. It helps me improve a lot, because if I wan't asking my partner how to make a snowflakes by just watching the video, well, I can, but I might fail at the first time.

I did the peer-assessment with my partner, My partner and I would make sure that the snowflakes that we made met the criteria, and our snowflakes was very pretty.

We didn't really met the ownership, but I learned a lot by helping other students and gave other people feedback.

We received feedback from Mr.Hong, Mr.Hong told us that we can made eight pieces for the second snowflakes that we made because it will look better, and it turned out great.

In conclusion, I think I can use the Big 6 Principle to make 3D snowflakes with my partner.

Hmm, am I even doing this right? At first my supposed to be 3D snowflake looked like a flat scrunched up piece of paper. :(
The learning intention was to successfully be able to make a 3D snowflake collaboratively with our partner for our class and Ms. Chung.
I knew when I achieved success when my 3D snowflake actually looked like one based on my background knowledge and when it looked like the one on WikiHow and the video.
I didn’t ask a lot of questions because it was pretty straight forward. I monitored my comprehension by watching the WikiHow to make sure I understood what I was doing.
I self-assessed that I should cut the first strip longer for my snow flake so that it would be thinner. I did it after my partner and I compared our first snow flake. So, for my next snow flake I made the first strip longer and my snow flake looked better.
I didn’t receive any feedback but I think my snow flake would of looked better if I did receive any. I took ownership of my learning hanging up my snow flake in the classroom for everyone to see and reaching my learning intention.

Today we were making 3-D snowflakes and the learning intention was "I can successfully create a 3-D snowflake by following the given instructions." My first one didn't look so well, and I knew I did it wrong because it didn't look anything like what was on the screen. I monitored my comprehension by asking my partner (CW) questions. We both agreed that I cut too many lines, so on my second one I cut lesser lines and it worked out perfectly!

And thats the magic off the "BIG 6 LEARNING PRINCIPLES"!!!!!!!!!

Christmas is here! And that means making winter art :D. Today Mr. Hong assigned us with the task of creating 3D snowflakes for both the classroom and to donate to Ms. Chung for the winter concert. We were collaborating with Mr. Fisher's class as well, so I was in a group of three. We were shown the clear objective, or the learning intention. We received examples of completed snowflakes that were created by Mr. Hong to allow us to understand the criteria we must meet to achieve success. Once we were given a clear path, we spread out around the two rooms and began to make our snowflakes.

When making art projects such as these, it is most recommended to make a test model, therefore you may be able to understand the criteria and give yourself feedback. I was able to fully monitor my comprehension as I asked people who had a full understanding of the project questions to allow me to know exactly what I must do. I would question the teachers when I was diffident about certain details.

As we were creating our snowflakes, I would share some tips to help polish the fraction of the snowflake they we making, I felt this did impact the final result as all the fractions of the snowflake from the test model were greatly improved in the final product. I however, was not offered any criticism and ended in self-assessing my own work, because I was given no outside sources of feedback my final product was not greatly improved. With the feedback I gave to my partners as well as my self-assessment, I felt we improved the final product greatly.

I unfortunately did not receive any feedback, therefore I relied on simple questions and self-assessment.

Taking ownershit in your work means that you understand your work, and you can elucidate it. Taking ownership in this snowflake means you can explain the whole process of creating this piece of art. Before we started working we were shown the learning intention to clarify what we must do. We were shown a snowflake as an example and a success criteria. As we worked we monitored our comprehension by reading the links we were given, and asking questions. I gave peer assessment by showing what may be improved, and how one must go about improving. I did not receive any descriptive feedback forcing me to rely on the small questions I asked and the self-assessment I underwent. This was a very fun art project and I look forward to experiences that match this one.

Today we did the 3D snowflake art which I found really fun! My partner and I found that some sources just weren't what we were looking for so we ended up looking for our own sources, which we found very helpful. The video was very detailed which didn't leave me any questions. My peers and I gave each other feedback such as making the middle smaller and making our cuts straight. We took ownership into our snowflake by making three and letting Mr.Hong and Ms.Chung.

Today we started doing a New mini art project on snowflakes, we were assigned to make at least 2 snowflakes per person and these are some of the things that we used make our snowflakes better
#1 Learning Intention= I can create a successful 3D snowflake for our class and for the winter concert!!
#2 Succes criteria= Watch the video carefully and understand what you need to do, and compare the snowflakes and see if anything is missing and if it matches the videos snowflakes that means that you have succesfuly created a 3D snowflake!

We also had a chance to use the large iPads to find a useful source to create our 3D snowflakes and soon after Mr.Hong dismissed us and let us do our work, everyone scrambled for an iPad and the source I used is Craft.com and YouTube! These sites I think can help everyone that needs help creating a 3D snowflake! And just a little before lunch the class was already half filled with 3D snowflakes made by students from Div.2 and Div.1, the art looked to real I was kind of shocked!

Today, we made snowflakes after we watched a video. Our snowflake looks good since we used the big 6 principles, which includes Learning Intentions, Success Criteria, Questions, Self/Peer Assessment, and Descriptive Feedback. The learning intention for this lesson was “I can make a snowflake based of the video.”

We used the learning intentions and success criteria to make our snowflakes. The first thing we did was to look at the success criteria and learning intentions. The learning intention for it was “I can successfully make one type of snowflakes with a partner.” We all completely knew our goal. Furthermore, my partner and I learned precisely the Success Criteria. We achieved our goal since we worked collaboratively, made one type of snowflake, and tried to make sure it was ravishing.

We asked question and received feedback to improve our snowflakes. When we were making the snowflakes, we had the freedom to ask other teachers, peers, or use the internet to understand the instructions. This could help us monitor our comprehension then deepened our understanding. After I searched how to make It online, I had a better understanding.

Even if we had a good snowflake, we could still improve it by self-assessment. We self-assessed whether the snowflake looked good or not, whether we were following the instructions correctly. After a long time, we finished our snowflake, then handed it in.

In conclusion, this is what we did today at school for art. We made beautiful 3D snowflakes and used the Big 6 to help us.

@ Kevin - Great job! I really liked the structure of your writing. (Intro, Body 1-3, Conclusion) Though for your conclusion, you need to state the thesis like you have in your intro: Learning Intentions, Success Criteria, Questions, Self/Peer Assessment, Descriptive Feedback, and Ownership. The thesis isn’t The Big 6, but what’s in the Big 6.

The learning intention was "I could cooperatively work with a partner to create a good 3D paper snowflake." I think that I definitely have reached the learning intention. I knew that I had achieved success when my partner, Breanna and I finished our first one which was actually very decent. We didn't really ask any questions to anyone or ourselves because Breanna and I have done this before and all it took for us to get the hang of it was a quick reminder from a Youtube video. However, we did monitor our comprehension by re-watching some parts of the video at some points. Everything went kind of smoothly with Breanna and I, we didn't really need to Gove each other feedback other than "oh that looks great!" or things like that but for myself, at one point I thought to myself that I should probably mark where I'm gonna cut with a pen just in case I mess up. No we didn't receive any feedback other than from ourselves and we took ownership in our work by proudly giving some of them to our music teacher, hanging them up on the ceiling and writing our names on them.

This is a little hard! Today, we made snowflake with both classes. I want to make a snowflake by myself so I did.

The learning intention is " I can work collaboratively with my classmate to create a 3D snowflake. The success criteria is to watch the videos and follow the steps. I follow the steps on the the video to make a snowflake. Asking questions was a big help to me. I ask questions to my partner and Mr.Hong.

I followed the steps on the video to make a snowflake. Asking questions was a big help to me. I asked questions to my partner and Mr. Hong. I didn’t ask myself any questions. I monitored my comprehension by watching the videos. I received feedback from Mr.Hong. He told me to cut more bigger so I get a better shape. I took ownership of my mini art inquiry by making a snowflake.
