Novel Approach Book Clubs

Today, we reviewed the 3 different transformations you have been learning about in Math. Each of you checked your understanding with Mr. Hong or Mrs. Navin. We are confident you all understand how to complete rotations. Tomorrow, you will be quizzed on translations, reflections, and rotations. Review your work and watch the review videos that have been posted over the last two weeks. In addition to this, we started working with our 'MA FAMILLE' groups to practice introducing our family members and interesting things about them.

The Novel approach to reading. To put it simply, you break things up- talk about things that you would have overlooked, see from new angles. It helps you truly understand what you're reading. In our book clubs, we haven't really made many improvements. I think we are being a bit more efficent, partly due to the fact that we were taking to much time and have started only really disscussing the ones some people didn't understand. We talk about things in order. Actually our conversations simply don't work smoothly. Eric is kind of always telling everyone what to do, even when they are allowed and not allowed to join the conversation, Caden is just being a bit to goofy sometimes and getting people off-topic sometimes, a couple people only really participate when. they are specifically asked. I am not without fault either, though- I know that I can talk a lot. But I think I've been managing that pretty well. I do think that the disscussions are helping me get a deeper understanding of the novel... but I honestly have to say that due to such circumstances I havn't been able to as much as I could have. I was even once simply "Not allowed" to join the conversation. Even though the reason was just not really reasonable. Aparently I talk to much in general- but not recently, and I let everyone voice oppinions! I'm not a hog! : (
The disscussions may help me with my powerful responses, if only because a couple people pushed my thinking (and you know, there's a part where you have to specifically say how your thinking was pushed and how). I really expected to be able to share and disscuss more openly, but apparently Eric thinks when we talk about the Gift of Words and book stuf it's "off topic". What can I do. `\_( ``/)_/`

What are some things that have improved in your book club discussions.
We didn't really improve because we became more distracted this time. We were off task a lot of times.
How has your group made the adjustments to make the conversations flow more smoothly?
It actually went less smoothly this time because we were off task. Next time we need to stay on task.
Are your discussions/conversations helping you get a deeper understanding of your novels?
Yes, because discussing the questions I didn't't understand helped me understand more about my confusion.
How will the discussions help you with your powerful responses?
They will deepen my thinking with will make it easier for me to write a better powerful response. Also I will have a lot of juice.
What is something that hasn't been going as well as expected?
Well, we were kind of of task. We were talking about Chinese accents with slowed our discussion this is bad and I hope it will be better next time

My P.A.R.
Today we had our third book club discussion. The first and second discussions we had were way better than the one we had today. Today we got off task but were we able to self regulate and focus on our work. One thing that really helped us in our discussion today was the visible thinking because we had a lot to share and we made many connections. The discussions are definitely helping me and probably my group members too, to help me get a deeper understanding about the novel. The discussions will help me with the powerful response because other people in my group would have added to my thinking so I would have a lot to add. Everyone in my group takes turns so that no one is talking over another person. Everyone also respectfully disagrees if they don't support their opinion. I hope that our next book club discussion will be better than the one we had today.

Today we had our third book club discussion.I was surprised about what had happened on the book. The first and second discussions we had were way better than the one we had today. Why you may ask? Well today we got off task but were we able to self regulate ourselves and focus on our work. One thing that really helped us in our discussion today was the visible thinking because we had a lot to share and we made many connections. The discussions are kind of helping me to get a deeper understanding about the novel. The discussions will help me a lot with the powerful response because other people in my group would have added to my thinking so I would have a lot to add. Everyone in my group takes turns so that no one is talking over another person. Everyone also respectfully disagrees if they don't support someone's opinion. I hope that our next book club discussion will be better than the one we had today.

Book clubs today went pretty well. Everyone kind of did there job. We improved by making our conversations flow more smoothly. Instead of going right into the gift of words or thinking and learning questions we started by asking each other what there thoughts on the book were so far. Then we gradually started with the gift of words and thinking and learning questions. When we did our gift of words and thinking and learning question it really got to think more about the book. The first day we had book club discussions I had no idea what the book was about except that he built a windmill. But once we had our third book club discussion I got a better understanding of the book and what the deeper meaning was. All this can help the powerful response. I could write the connections my group members had and even write down some of there questions because they might help push my thinking. Also it can help because if you don't know what a gift of word meant of thinking and learning question meant your group can help you understand them better. Our group wasn't perfect. Our group sometimes didn't share because they might have been scared that there answer was wrong, but they should know that no answers are wrong. People just think differently. Another thing that didn't go well were people not focusing. I'll have to admit though, it was mostly me. Maybe to keep us from getting of task and talking when it isn't our turn we should have a talking stick or something. Overall, I think that the book club discussions are really helpful, they get you thinking more about the book and the deeper meaning. But sometime people just get a bit off task.

Today, our book clubs improved and un-improved. It was overall good but we went off topic more. But I think we improved more on adding to each others thinking. We had better discussions and more deeper ones but that caused some more off topic talking. The adding to each others thinking went very smoothly but we went off topic time to time. I think these discussion really help us deepen our understanding of the book because we can find out what other people thought. I think that it will really help us with out PAR because we can talk about how others saw the book. Overall, our discussions were good but we went off topic more than ever.

Things can be good or bad, like my book club discussion!

Since the beginning, our book club discussions have because gradually better. Firstly, more of my members have completed there work and that goes the same with quality. Some of my group members put their own personal spin to their thoughts which pushed my thinking.

I can recall times where my group members had put deeper thoughts into a phrase or paragraph and again, pushed my thinking. They also gave me a deeper understand for my novel.

Like everything in life, there is some things that need to improve, just like our book club discussions. One of my group members needs to improve on the task of paying attention and to not interrupt a speaking speaker. Another thing that can improve is visible thinking. Not once have I seen someone pull out a sticky, and yes, I didn't either, so it's partially my fault as well.

I can recall times where my group members had deep thoughts towards a phrase or paragraph or the entire section of a book, and again, pushed my thinking. They also gave me a profound understanding of my novel.

Like everything in life, there are things that need to improve, the same could be said for our book club discussions. One of my group members needs to seriously improve on the task of paying attention and to not interfere when a person is delivering a speech. Another thing that could improve is visible thinking. The problem is not the quality or the amount, it's that no one seems to use their visible thinking in our book club discussions. I'm convinced that my group members have excellent visible thinking, but it's just that they don't utilize it. And yes, I didn't either, so it's partially my fault as well.

Although, the one improvement that I've seen, is more group members sharing their thinking during our discussions. This includes me since I tend to be quiet and kind of shy in a group setting. Although, at first we didn't have enough time to discuss all of our T&L questions and GOWs. We've been managing our time much better. This helps our conversation to flow more smoothly. I think that discussing the book will help me write my powerful response because it won't just be based off of my own thinking it will also be other people's ideas. If I don't understand one of the T&L questions or the GOWs I can see what my group members put. One thing that hasn't gone as well as expected would be us having deep conversations about the GOWs. We find that they aren't too deep and are pretty straightforward. So yeah, that's pretty much how book clubs are going... this isn't edited at all and it doesn't make sense so sorry about that. I'll try and edit to make it better although, we both know it will still be bad.

Although I wasn't at school today, I can use my previous experiences with my book club to do today's PAR.What are some things that have improved in your book club discussions. First, I feel like my group doesn't really have to do anything to make the conversation flow, because we have a lot to say about the book. It's either a thinking and learning question that catches everyone's attention, or just everything that's happened in the book in general. My group has a lot of thoughts as well as connections, so that's usually not a problem for us. What are some things that have improved in your book club discussions. I think these discussions help everyone in our group. Each of us have different opinions, and different points we're trying to get across. This actually helps us understand what the author may be trying to day better. My powerful response will probably be greatly based on what my group members have said in our previous discussions. These discussions have a lot of deep meanings, as well as a better understanding of the backstories of my group members. I think that there aren't many things I'd change about my book club discussions.

The book club meetings were very... interesting. I would say that we improved slightly. Even though we seemed a bit loud and not focused, we were actually just talking about the book. To be completely honest, our conversations don’t exactly flow smoothly. There would be one person telling us to stay on task when we technically are but not? There would also be someone making the whole group sort of get a bit off task. What I actually do like is that we all help each other get a deeper understanding of the book. We would discuss something and then it would get deeper bit by bit. Doing the conversations help us with the powerful responses for when we have to mention who helped push our thinking. I would say that our voice level is something that is quite well. We tend to get a bit loud when we’re talking and no one really quiets each other either. That’s pretty much it...

Today we had our third book club discussion! So far a couple things have improved. First of all, we are more efficient. We don’t go through everything anymore. Perhaps it’s also because we only had one gift of word and one T&L question. We also had lots of things to share and we all participated. My group did some visible thinking, which helped our conversations to flow smoothly. When we were talking about the book, we came up with a conspiracy theory/inference about why Ben was hallucinating in the temple. We thought that the strong scent of incense and the weird powder was the cause of Ben’s hallucinations. The conversations have been somewhat helping me to get a deeper understanding of the novel. In some T&L questions and gift of words, my thinking gets pushed by others in my group. The discussions will help me get more ideas through others pushing my thinking and in turn will give me more fuel to write my powerful response. We sometimes get a bit carried away when we talk about too many connections or when our connections go on and on. Then, we have to refocus ourselves and continue our discussion. Overall, I think our discussions are going well and I hope to have more discussions like this one in the future.

We improved quite a bit as in we chatted less and had better ideas and better conversation. We just buckled down and did it. The sticky notes really didn't help at all I think we just progressed through them more smoothly because we stayed on task. I think we are getting deeper into the novel because none of us are afraid to share what we think and we all have our different opinions. Book clubs will help us with our powerful response because we get more ideas and building on our learning and ideas.

There was one thing in particular that improved a lot and is that people are being accountable and these last few days, everyone got their work done and was sharing and collaborating with everyone else.
How has your group made the adjustments to make the conversations flow more smoothly?
We did some visible thinking so we can add to each others thinking and push it.
Are your discussions/conversations helping you get a deeper understanding of your novels?
Yes very. When we share it's almost like ricochets so we bounce each other ideas off of each other then we can explain even more.
How will the discussions help you with your powerful responses?
It will help you when you don't have something in one section then someone else says something that really makes you think of something else.
What is something that hasn't been going as well as expected?
Actually I thought that everything was fine.

Today was our third Novel Study meet, and in my opinion it went pretty well. I feel like we’re more used to one another now, so we talk more freely. We made our conversations flow more smoothly by treating them as normal conversations. We had time to add in a few side comments rather than have our dialogue be artificial, and blocky. I would say that discussing the gift of words is helping me get a better understanding, and a different opinion of the phrases. And by understanding the phrases, I also feel that it gives me a better understanding of the book. When I complete my Powerful response, I’ll probably use all of these gift of words, and T&L questions to, not only include (as required) in the beginning of my writing, but to formulate my opinion on what I think the big idea is. I understand now, why we do these Novel Study meets, and I think I’m starting to enjoy them :).

It's already our third book club discussion today. We all improved some way. I remembered my group's first discussion, we were a bit off task and some people were fooling around. But during this discussion, no one was unable to share, and we weren't off task, not even once. I always write down stuff the others said, and there's a lot after everyone
had spoke. This whole sharing thing will help me later in my powerful response. I think this discussion is the best one so far.

Today was already our third book club discussion. Everyone was improving and sharing ideas. I remembered my group's first discussion, we were a bit off task and some people were fooling around. But during this discussion, no one was unable to share, and we weren't off task, not even once. Every group member finished their certain page numbers, read the book, and we all had different opinions to share. I always write down stuff that the others said, and there's a lot after everyone had spoke. This whole sharing process will help me later in my powerful response. I think this discussion is the best one so far, and I'm really enjoying this novel approach assignment.

Today,we get into our group and we did the third book discussion. I think overall,we did quite well,so let me talk more about it. We also did improve in our discussion. I think the best thing is that all of our group mates did complete all of the 'gift of words' and think and learning questions,I think it improves because last time not everyone finished all of that,and so it went well. The other thing that improve is that last time we really didn't stay on task so well,but today we were all mostly stay on task which I think that we improve a lot in it. How did our group keep the conversation smoothly is the first important thing we always stay on task,if we talked the things that is not on topic then it must didn't go smooth but today we stay on task so it went smoothly. Also the other thing is that,while we were sharing we will ask questions or we will make connections,once one person share one connection,others will start thinking more deeper so it helped to went smooth and it also add to our thinking. I think the conversation actually did help me to think deeper about the story. The thinking and learning questions helped the most. When other was sharing about their opinions,I will always felt surprised because I will think like I never think about that,then I gonna think deeper and maybe there was a deeper meaning and others gonna share their own opinions which make it more deep. Since we have to explain, I think we did pretty well. I always say this because our conversations includes laughter, but technically isn’t being off task. We were talking about the book after all. What we improved most on was to use our time wisely. We do the TOL before the GOW so that we have enough time I discuss more important things. I think that’s the main improvement. It applies to how we make our conversation flow better, and our overall changes. I think discussing about the book makes our powerful response better because of all the different perspectives we learn about. We improve our thinking and push our thoughts to the max. I personally think our discussions were great, but teachers always say that there’s always room for improvement.

I feel like today’s book club meeting went efficiently. It improved slightly from the first book club we had. In today’s book club everyone completed the section for this book club so our conversations were able to go smoothly. We talked more about the GOWs to clarify to the people who didn’t understand. Some of us kind of explained about the why we wrote whatever we wrote for the GOWs. Unlike the first meeting, we didn’t just read off our booklets and say a brief thing about it, we were able to discuss more about them. I feel like today’s book club meeting went efficiently. It improved from the first book club we had. In today’s book club, everyone completed the section we had to do. This caused our conversations to go smoothly. We talked more about the GOWs to clarify to the people who didn’t understand. Some of us kind of explained about the why we wrote whatever we wrote for the GOWs. Unlike the first meeting, we didn’t just read off our booklets and say a brief thing about it. We were able to discuss more about them. It also applies to how we made our conversations more smoothly. The discussions helped me be able to see the book in someone else’s perspective. We had our third book club discussion today. I think it went better and ran smoothly than the last two book club discussions since we all got used to each other. We also got to talk about other things other than our gift of words, thinking and learning questions, but we were still on topic. I think discussing and understanding the deeper meaning of a gift or words or thinking and learning questions helps me think more deeper about the novel. After knowing the meaning I can also connect to some of them and make connections using my background knowledge. I find this whole novel approach, gift of words, thinking and learning questions useful and sometimes makes me wanting to know more about this specific part of the novel. I will definitely use the gift of words and thinking and learning questions to help me write my powerful response. I feel like getting into the novels made me more interested into doing this, so I’m in a way enjoying this.
