Mathematical Transformations

Today, students started the day with music class with Ms. Chung. They are working on coming up with commercial jingles. After that, they engaged in Novel Approach book clubs and then learned about mathematical rotations. In the afternoon, we had our SOAR assembly followed by Chemistry and Digital Photography. We have 2 months of school left! Let's end the year off strong by owning your learning!

IMPORTANT:

Who would have guessed that when you add sugar and sulfuric acid it makes a growing black column? Today I got to see it happen. Science is and interesting subject, but there is a lot you need to know before going and experimenting with elements and acids. For example, you would need to know what a physical and chemical properties and what the difference is. First, a physical property is any property that is measurable such as length or width. However, a chemical property is something you can observe like corrosiveness. This way you can observe how corrosive something is.(corrosive means slowly eating away) now that you know what they are, now you need to know the difference. A physical property is a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change. That's the difference of a chemical and physical property. But don't go doing any experiments. There is still a lot to learn.

You might have wondered why the food turned black and why it smells burnt? The properties of a substance can affect how it behaves upon interacting with another matter. Properties have two classifications, chemical and physical. To start with, Chemical properties are how a substance changes under specific conditions. Nothing about it's chemical properties will be affected; if it evaporates, it will still have the same boiling point, and contain the same chemical bond of atoms. Physical and chemical changes are similar, but they are not talking about a substance's characteristics or their potential for change, but a change in the substance. What is chemical and physical properties? And what are the differences? Each properties are unique. And the all have differences.
First is physical properties. Physical properties only changes the characteristic. That means that the only the look changes and the chemical doesn’t. For example, when ice changes into water. Only the characteristic changes and the chemical is still water.

For example, aluminum can change physically from a lump of aluminum to a sheet, a flat sheet of aluminum by using a physical force which would be a hammer. And what that makes is tin foil. Although in the same sense, it changed physically not chemically. Now, for chemical change it is different. Well, a chemical change could be battery acid if it comes in contact with metal, for example, aluminum it will corrosive to the aluminum. Which means, it will dissolve the aluminum. FEEDBACK : Make sure to check the givens and read it over. There are a few grammar mistakes. For example, “ Well if you don’t know I am here to tell you” should be “well if you don’t know *,* I’m here to tell you.” Also “not how the substance behaves, chemically” doesn’t need the comma. It should just be “not how the substance behaves chemically.”
FEEDBACK 2: I think you could’ve worded “ Although in the same sense, it changed physically not chemically” better. It’s a bit hard to understand and seems kind of messy. You could say “While it has changed physically, the chemical substances remain the same” or something along those lines.

To start off, a physical property is properties that describe the physical characteristics of a substance and not how the substance behaves chemically. Science experiments are in need of knowledge, more specifically, the knowledge of physical and chemical properties, though aside from knowing the importance of it, let's discuss on their differences. Firstly, physical properties. They describe the physical characteristics of a substance, and not a change in its composition. For example, melting would be classified as a physical change/property, because though its shape has changed, the state of the would substance will be the same. Moving on, a chemical property/change, is the change of the identity of a substance. As an example, if you had an iron nail and left it alone for a few months, it would become rusty. This would be known as a chemical change because the original substance, (the iron nail), turned into a completely different substance, (rusty nail). But, going back to the main point, how would they be different then? Well, in my own terms, a physical change is typically temporary, whilst the change of a chemical change is irreversible, just like the two examples said before. Despite the fact that it probably wasn't your choice to read this, at least you have a little more background knowledge on the two properties.

Chemical and psychical properties. What are they? Well, a Chemical property is a type of matter that can be turned into another type. For example, a rotting banana. That’s a chemical property, making it change overtime. Psychical property, something that can be observed even over time, or even measured. Something that wont change over time! For instance, shattering glass. You’re just shattering it, it’s still glass but broken into more individual pieces. Now that you’ve gotten a better understanding of the differences between chemical, and psychical property, do you think that you’d be able to list some of them?
