Today, students were deeply engaged during Science class! The students learned a lot about adaptations and we watched a short video clip about them. Afterwards, we played a 'Find the Invisible Animal' game using the images from this online newspaper from the UK. The photographer, Mr. Wolfe, has been taking photos of animals in the wild for over 35 years! For homework, students were asked to do some research to see if they can find an animal that has made unique adaptations. Later this week, students will start researching and working on their 'Adaptations' assignments!

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.
MATH 7: Complete worksheet 2.3. Watch this video on adding with fraction strips. You will have a 5 question quiz on it tomorrow.

2.) ART: Bring your toilet paper roll if you haven't done so already.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Do some research and see if you can find some animals that you are interested in learning more about.
Simple keywords that you can use to search include '(ANIMAL NAME) + adaptations'. Feel free to try different combinations of keywords and even sentences.
See if you can find an animal that has made some unique/interesting adaptations over time.
If someone has already posted about a specific adaptation, find a different one. I'd like everyone to research a different animal.
Post 3 different adaptations of this animal(s) and how it has helped this species survive!
Post all of your sources underneath each adaptation. Remember, your post must be in your own words! Do not copy and paste!

3 Adaptations that help the Okapi to survive are: 1.) one there legs that have zebra stripes and those help then by helping to camouflage the Okapi when hiding in partial sunlight that filters through the dense rain forest. 2.)In order to protect okapi calves from predation, the young do not defecate (poop) for the first time until they are 1 to 2 months old. By this time, they have tripled in size and have had the chance to gain strength. 3.)that also blend in with this setting for it is easy for the okapi to sink into mud because of its narrow mountain hooves.

P.S.an Okapi's Diet is Leaves, twigs and fruits

the pygmy goat one I learned by a framer the have A very large diet of food in fact they can eat almost anything they can send their mouth 2 is my dad told me about this one but they are social creatures so they need to be with the group have a high chance of survival does the wolf comes it's not going to attack 20 pigmy goats no it would attack only one 3 they have short legs so it's much easier to move it quickly.

Sunda Flying Lemur
One way they adapt is by using their great vision to see far distances to locate where they should land.

The second way they adapt is they aren't great climbers, but they make up for it by being able to glide up to 70 metres at a time

The last way they adapt is their ability to carry their young baby's while gliding/running for the first six months after being born, this keeps the baby's safe from predators.

One adaption they have made is they used to fly but they have adapted to the article so now they can swim up to 15 mph.

2)they have adapted by getting black and wighte skin/feathers that they use for camo.
3)they also have adapted so they can drink salt water and see in salt water with out getting hurt.

Snow Leopard:

1.) Camouflage: Snow leopards hide in the snow and leap out to catch their prey.

2.) Climate tempature: Snow leopards have a thick fur coat to protect them form the biting cold.

3.) Terrain: Snow leopards have adapted to the rocky hills and climbs, that they can now manover around them swiftly.

The Chameleon
The first way they adapt to their environment is their camouflage which is an ability everyone knows about the chameleon.

Another way they adapt is their prehensile tail that is for climbing.

The last way they adapt to their environment is they have 2 big eyes so they can see 2 things at a time!

a sawfish has unique adaptations. One of them include using their saw shaped snout to detect preys. The second one they can use is using their snouts to dig up sand from the bottom to find their preys since their diet consist of animals that live on the ground. Lastly, now that the sawfish are endangered they, they now have to adapt to all the fishing gear now floating around in the area that they are in. The fishing gear has killed them.

Thorny devil:
1.) Camouflage: Thorny devil's have coluors of the sand so watch wear you step!
2.) Cool fact: The Thorny devil has a very cool ability to have water drip on it's back and the groves in the scales take the water to it's mouth.
3.) landscape: The Thorny devil lives in the Australian outback in the harsh heat. This animal can menuver throw dewy bushes and climb rocks to see.

ADAPTATIONS: Chinchillas have adapted by losing their fur when they become nervous. Chinchillas become so nervous that the nervous system makes the Chinchilla lose its fur. Another reason why is when Chinchillas try to escape from a predator. If a predator grabs them by their fur the Chinchilla then releases its fur and runs to safety.
Another thing wild Chinchillas have adapted to is having really thick hair so in the wild they wont be affected by the colder weather.
Last but not least Wild Chinchillas can also live in holes or rock crevices at elevations exceeding 400m

First adaptation is their long, thin fingers. There fingers are used to find their food and tap bark, also it used for tapping on wood to find insects. Second adaption is they had large front teeth. also this teeth never stop growing. It used for gnawing wood looking for insects and also they use for breaking nuts and fruits. Third adaption is their big ears. They use ears for listening sounds to see if it contains an insects.

Sea Turtles

Adaptations: Sea turtles can't retract their limbs into their shells, but if the could, they wouldn't be able to swim fast. If they couldn't swim fast, they wouldn't be able to catch their prey as easily, or swim away from their predator.

Sea turtles can stay underwater for long periods of time because they are cold-blooded and they have a slow metabolism. This is important because they live underwater. The only time they come out of water is to lay their eggs.

Sea turtles have a salt gland to get rid of excess salt in their bodies. If they didn't had this they wouldn't be able to survive in salt water.

To begin with, Red pandas have big wrist bones called "Pseudo thumbs" that help them grasp food better. Next, Red pandas also feed at night so that there are no other animals competing for that food. Lastly, did you know that the red pandas big bushy tails were made for balance while climbing up trees?

Humans
During the colder months they wear warmer clothes and during the warmer months they wear tank tops and shorts.
When humans are moved from there environment they are able to adapted and make a home.
To avoid predictors humans created weapons to fight back and they also, use the weapons to hunt food.
@ Mr.Hong I did humans because they are a very adaptable species but if you want me to do something else that is okay.

The African Wild Cat
This furry mammal lives in Africa and has adapted to many circumstances. For example, their pelts are brown and gold, to match their surroundings and pounce on their prey, as well as hide from predators. African Wild Cats also have long legs for running very fast. Finally, they have adapted to having more predators in their habitats by leaving their scent markings (urinating) to keep intruders away.

The Gray Wolf:
The gray wolf has many adaptationsthat help it survive. It has teeth and claws for hunting. The fur of the gray wolf is a great insulater and it can keep out moisture. The hearing and their sense of smell are a lot better than humans have.

Beaver- The beaver is a weird animal with Huge teeth, the reason they have huge teeth is because of the trees they need to cut them down with there bare teeth to make a dam.
Another adaption they have is there sense of smell this perk can tell them the difference between the predators around them.
The last thing would be the webbed feet those adaptions help the beaver swim the statistics show that they can swim 6 miles in an hour.

The Narwhal
The narwhal has adapted a much bigger range of communication so they can communicate from farther way.They have also adapted very flexible necks so they can see if there are any predators near by and they can catch more prey.Finally the have adapted to have more blubber so they can stay warm in arctic waters

Rabbits are found in the USA and they have adapted in the wild to survive the cold and hot climates over seasons. All of the adaptions like the teeth, ears and Heart rate are an essential survival tool. Because of that, it has kept the rabbit population farther from extinction. Another thing is that all 3 of those are adaptions by when they hear predators or when they eat something they need to get used to what to and what to not eat. Lastly, There heart rate needs to be constantly pumping because if it stops then you die.

The Giraffe:
1) The Giraffe has grown longer necks to reach its food. They couldn't reach the food higher up so they adapted and grew longer necks.
2) The Giraffe also grew a longer neck because when they eat they used to lean down but the blood rushed to there head which can harm them.

One adaptation for the Chrysopelea is their ability to flatten their ribs so they can glide from tree to tree. Amazingly it doesn't hurt them. Like most snakes they eat their prey whole. They do this by unhinging their jaw to fit it down. Lastly, they have short fangs that curve back so they cans swollow even easier.

adaption 1. The north African rock python has adapted to its surroundings by camouflage. It looks like it is a pile of dry leaves. adaption 2. It has very acidic stomach acids to break down large prey because they don't have teeth to chew with so they swallow their prey whole. adaption 3. They have an expandable stomach to swallow larger prey.

Pigs have very rugged skeletons which are good for keeping weight up.
Pigs have grown to be very good smilers because of their bad eye sight they need their noses to survive.

Some different kinds of pigs have different hearing for example the Yorkshire are known to have very good hearing. If you walked into a barn it is likely that all of them would have heard you and turn to see you.
