Tuesday: Grouse Grind

6/11/2013

Today, all of our Gr. 6/7 students hiked up the Grouse Grind. Our fastest student completed the Grind in just over 43 minutes. All of our students beat their previous times from term 1. They have all worked hard throughout the year to build their stamina and endurance in anticipation of this year end event. They have all participated in moderate to vigorous physical activities throughout the year. Well done students!

I really enjoyed the field trip today! I think I liked it more this time because I got to be with my best friends most of the time! Especially, the support I gave and received from them. I also liked doing it because I knew what my goal was, and even though I didn't get my goal, I still finished at my average time.

Today I learned that if you try hard enough for something, sure enough you will get it. I think I could have been harder on myself by pushing and striving for the top, so I could have done a little better. I also learned that keeping a positive attitude the entire way up, really helps! It made me look forward to completing it!

I think that next time I will try and take less breaks. Since I went up with a few of my friends, I took a lot of breaks that I didn't even want half of the time, but I wanted to stay with them so I just waited too. I also will try to jog or run up the mountain so I can have a better time. Keeping a good pace to control my breathing would have helped to because I wouldn't need too many breaks.

I didn't beat my previous time, but I was still proud of what I got because my time was the average amount I needed to actually complete it. I think my time would have improved a lot more, if I took less breaks, and if I kept my breathing and pace at a good level that I'm comfortable with.

Today was lots of fun! :)

@ Sandy - Good call! Next time, take fewer breaks because it makes your body and your heart work harder. If you raise your heart rate through exercise and then slow it down again, it is more difficult to get started again. Does that make sense?

To be honest, I don't think that beating your time is important. If you are proud with your time, and if you feel accomplished, it's a great feeling. As long as your happy with yourself, than you have done a good job, and that's all anyone could ever ask for, especially if you climbed up a mountain.

1 Yes I did enjoy Field trip and why I enjoy this is it because I bet my Record form last time

2 What I learned to day is that I should sleep more because the night before I went to bed to late

3 What I will do next time to improve is not take as many brakes because I got tired before last time

4 Because I got good start this time so I was able to beat my time by 8 minutes

Today was a great field trip. Last time I got to the top of the hill in around 50 minutes, this year I got 1:15. So even though I got worse this time, it was a fun and rewarding hike up the mountain. I tried to focus on my breathing this time, and I also tried to push myself and not take as many breaks. But next time i'll try even harder and bring more water (I forgot my water and only had 2 juice boxes). I think that's why I got a worse time. But also, this time I had my friend to do it with (Hawkfire from Ms. Findlay's class) and no offense to her, she kept asking to take breaks, which no matter how hard I pushed her, we had to stop more often then I intended. So next year I will bring more water, take less breaks and either push Hawkfire more or let her go on her own, which I don't want to do. But it was really overall a great experience.

When you start out, you're like, "This is ok." Then it gets harder, and it feels like years before you finally reach the 1/4 mark. "Yeah I made!" Then you realize it's only the 1/4 mark. So you keep going.

All around you people are screaming, "Are we there yet?!" And finally some of the kids from farther up yelled, "HALF MARK!!!" Followed by cheers of parents, kids and even random other people.

Finally you hear Mr. Hong yelling at the top of the mountain and it starts getting lighter as the trees became thinner and there was less of them. Then you turn a final corner and Ms. Wilson shouts your time, and for the next week you feel this horrible achy feeling in your legs.

Yes of course I enjoyed the field trip and I think I liked it because when you reach the top it feels amazing and everyone cheers you on. Also, I loved it because we set a goal and if I achieved that goal it would feel even more amazing but I did not get my goal sadly. :(

I learned that if you think you can not do you can't, but if you think that you can do it you will do it because you have set you mind to it and your mind is really powerful. Also, If you don't try something will not do it, but if you do try you will do it just like the first saying.

To improve my time next time I will run more and go faster up the mountain. Also, I will start at the front so I don't have to go through everyone at the start and take maybe 1 or 2 brakes and take longer steps and jog when it becomes flat in some parts.

I did not beat my other time and I think part of that reason of why I did not beat it is that I did not run or jog up the grouse grind and at the start, start at the front of the pack so I do not have to go passed all the people.

@ Cole - The feeling when you reach the top is amazing because the Grouse Grind is a very challenging hike! It is ok if you didn't get your goal today. You did your best and that is all I can ask! :)

I agree with Mr. Hong. At leat you tried your best to complete your goal, it doesnt matter weather you complete your goal or not as long as you try. That is a vey good saying. Did you set your mind to completing your goal? That is a good way to complete your goal next time but do you have any other ways to complete your goal? Other than those few suggestions/questions great job! :)

I kind of enjoyed the field trip. I didn't love the grouse grind but I also didn't hate it because I got yo do it with friends and we got to encourage each other and have fun.

I learned that if you try your best you can achieve anything.

Personally I don't really think I need to change anything because I didn't take very many brakes and I pushed myself to do harder.

Since I wasn't able to do it last time I didn't beat my time by anything

Next time I will improve my time by taking less breaks during the grind.
Today I did not beat my time, the reason for this is because I was suck on the weekend so I still had a little cold, and because if that I had to take more breaks to make me feel better.

Today I enjoyed the field trip because it was good exercise and it was fun to hang out with my friends. I also didn't like it because it was very tiring and my legs felt like they were going to fall off of my body, I wanted to literally jump down the mountain and die at some points.

Today what I learned about myself is that I need to work a little harder then others to get a good time. Some people like the people who did it in under an hour, to get a time like mine (1hour 30mins) they probably wouldn't have to work as hard as I did. If I was to get a time like theirs I would have to work very very very hard to get that kind of time.

What I will do next time to beat my time is take less breaks and try to keep a better pace, and hopefully not be sick or have baseball playoffs. Another thing I will do is try to stay with some of the faster people for as long as I can, and that should put me on track for a better time.

Today I did not beat my time, the reason for this is because I was sick on the weekend so I still had a little cold, and because if that I had to
take more breaks to make me feel better. Another reason is I tried to take it a little bit easy because I have baseball playoffs happening, and I didn't want to be to tired.

Today was a really fun day for me. I enjoyed it because I had a walking stick almost the entire time, and I was with my friend. I also had music which motivated me. Me and @Pooh bear went up a lot of the way up together, and we totally missed the half way point! Which was good and bad, because we kept moving and being motivated to get to the half way point, except for the fact that we wanted to take a break at the half way point and take a picture.

Today I learned that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. I learned that climbing a mountain is much more fun when your with friends. This time I don't think I took as many breaks as last time. You need to make sure you pace your self and make sure you don't run, because you will lose all your energy.

Next time, I will make sure I don't take so many breaks and walk a little faster. If I don't take so many breaks, and walk a little faster, I should be able to get a faster time.

I didn't beat my last time by 1 minute. I think this is because I started a little later and I took longer breaks.

All in all I had a great day.

@ Judy Moody - I often keep my head down when I'm hiking up the Grouse Grind. It keeps me focused on my breathing and not on the quarter markers. Having friends around definitely helps motivate you to accomplish your goals!

Yes I did because it was very accomplishing to get up. I learned that my first try is always best for everything and next time I will not sprint at the beginning. I did not beat it because this time I had a bag and I sprinted at the beginning.

Grouse Grind Revised

Today was a very exciting and fun day for me, but I was disappointed I did not beat my time from before. And that was because at first, I sprinted and secondly, I took a lot of breaks. It felt very accomplishing to get to the top before a lot of people. My time was 1:04. I learned that my first try is always best for everything and next time I will not sprint at the beginning.They should also for next time should chose a day with better weather, it was freezing the whole way.
But at the end, I had lots of fun doing the Grind.

1.) it was sort of fun It took a while but in the end it was rewarding I was able to buy from the shop and I also got a maple syrup lollipop!
2.) That I can actually accomplish things in a faster time that I though I could be.
3.)I will definitely take less breaks.
4.)I did beat my record by quite a lot and I think the reason why was because I took less breaks and also my breaks were short but the main part was that I went with a friend that some times when I got tired and he didn't know I would have to speed and that kept me going.

1) I enjoyed the field trip because I finished with a good time and It was not raining.
2) I learned that I can get up the hill in a hour and a couple minutes.
3) I will try to go faster and take less breaks.
4) Well I did not have a good start because I got trampled and I was taking to many breaks so I lost to my time at 1 Hour 16 mins.

Well.. I liked the field trip but it was a pain in the butt climbing up that mountain I HATED IT, I felt like I took to many breaks and a lot of waiting because of my friends and people that I was walking with. Another thing that really killed my time was taking my water out a drinking water. Also my time I got was not better then my first time. A couple tips to get me up the hill are to take less breaks, secondly try to get up the hill faster and lastly to make sure I have my water out instead of stoping at talking it out manually. I did not have the best start because I was at the back of the group. It us not important if you beat your time because you at least did something huge

Ironically to all of you who believe that I'm quite fast, I don't do long distance. I didn't like this field trip today because climbing up the mountain and reaching the top didn't motivate me, it only drove my attention to the inside even more and caused me to stay in places. The thing I learned abut myself today was that I'm not so easily impresses no matter how much gratitude I should be feeling. The next when I will do this (Which is never), I will try to pick a group and pace it as mildly as I can, moving along with a group of people say 4-5 easily keeps heat problems under control around the top and help the entertainment flow of the journey. I really don't think I beat my previous time, I think I got around the same time.

I enjoyed the field trip we had today. Because it was really fun hanging out with friends and going up the mountain. The best part though was the feeling you get when you finish the grind.

I learned that if you have the determination, you can do whatever you want to do. Even if you are tired, if you are determined then you can do it.

Next time, to improve my record I will not take as much breaks. Also, I will not take as long breaks.

I beat my last time by twenty minutes. Because I had the determination to finish the grind in less than an hour. When I was at the 3/4 mark, I finished the last 1/4 in 8 minutes because I really wanted to get under an hour, which I did, with 58 minutes.

I really enjoyed the Grouse Grind although I did not beat the time that I got last time I still enjoyed it very much. In opinion I thought that the best part about the grind was reaching the top of the mountain.

I learned that you should never say I cant do this its to hard you should always set high standards for yourself anyone can do the grind no matter how long it takes time is just a number .

Next time to improve my time which was 1:32 minutes is to not take a lot of breaks no matter how tired I was the next time I do the grind then I will probably take at least 3-4 breaks that way my time improves.

I did not beat my time from last time last time I got 1:15 but this time I got 1:32.

Did you enjoy the field trip today? Why?
I really enjoyed the field trip today, I had so much fun climbing up the mountain and also hanging out with my friends. In all honesty, I though it would be way harder. It wasn't my first time doing the Grouse Grind. However, I was expecting it to be much harder. In the beginning of the hike, my two friends and I started together. But we ended up being split up throughout the mountain. I felt very accomplished once I got to the top and everyone was cheering.
What did you learn about yourself today?
Today I learned that believing in yourself goes along way. I know this might sound kind of cheesy, but it really helped me. As well as motivation. I remember the first time I did it all I did was think I would never get to the end or finish it. Therefor, I didn't get a decent time. The second time I did it, I thought it would be really easy so I expected that and I ended up getting a worse time. So, all in all, I think it is very important to believe in yourself and know that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Because it really does help even if you don't have the strength.
What will you do next time to improve your time?
I really think there is so many things I could improve on to improve my time, however I'm not sure. The only big break I took was at the 1/4 mark. Other than that, I took some sips of water while I was hiking.
If you beat your previous time, did you beat it? If so, why do you think you beat it? If not, why
I did beat my previous time by alot. And the reason why I think I beat it was because I went at my level. I could of stopped and waited for my friends, and I really wanted to. But, at the same time I wanted to also beat my time and go to my level. So, I think because of that I didn't take that many breaks and so I got to the top faster.

I really enjoyed the field trip because I beat my record which is now 49 minutes.

I learned that if you believe you can achieve. Like I believed that I could get up the mountain in under 50 minutes and I did it.

To improve my time I will start exercising a long time before doing the grouse grind and I will always hydrate myself.

I was able to beat my time today by 4 minutes. I think I was able to beat my time by taking quick breaks and pacing my self.

Okay, first things first, THIS WAS TORTURE, THIS WASN'T FUN AT ALL. It didn't motivate me, it only made me realize how much pain it's possible to feel, who in the world thinks climbing up a damn MOUNTAIN IS IN ANYWAY ENJOYABLE, like really who in the world thought making children climb up Satan mountain is a good idea. Second, I learned what it feels like to have your legs ripped off slowly with each step and how much one person can throw up, not that I threw up, but you should have seen some of the others, also that some people get a bit dizzy and complain for a few minutes before being demanded to be taken back down, like really I almost passed out and I went up even though I didn't want to.
Thirdly.
HAHAHAHA.
WHO IN THE WORLD THINKS IM GOING TO GO DO THAT AGAIN.
And lastly, I did beat my time, you know why? Because it was my second time up and I knew Satan was coming for me the second I set foot on the trail, so I knew how to run away from Satan this time.

To be honest I did not like the field trip. The only part I liked was getting a burger at the top of the mountain. I don't really like hiking so that is probably why I didn't like it. I prefer things more like snowboarding and dance. I like snowboarding down mountains but I don't like walking up them. So in my opinion I do not like the grouse grind.
I learned today that if you set your mind to it you can accomplish the grouse grind. If you turn back down you don't have that feeling that you accomplished something. You have to set your mind to it to complete it.
Next time (if there is a next time) I will take way less breaks. I took lots of breaks this time so my time was over 45 minutes longer than my other time which was 1 hour and 25 minutes. So in order to improve my time I need to take less breaks.
I did not beat my time but I do not really care about my time. I completed it and that's what matters. I am not like some people who can just run up the mountain and they are really worried about there time. I think it is more important to take your time and not just rush up the mountain. So that is why I don't really think time matters. So in the end I did not really like the grouse grind but I completed it anyways.

(Why I was not at the grind)
Well first of all... I would have been sitting at the top of the grouse grind the whole day with crouches. And honestly I'd rather go sit at home all day. Like seriously I had so many productive things to do yesterday! For example, from 7am till 9am I was browsing the Internet, 10am till 3pm I was playing the Xbox and till 4pm I was playing board games and eating peanutbutter sandwichs. Then my parents came home and I played more Board games until 7pm. Then I was listening to my music till 9pm. That was a very productive day. I wanted to go outside but because of my foot I would have gone to the grouse grind. I was looking foreword to going to the grind before I sprained my ankle... I really hope we go again next year. But in truth I personaly DO like the grouse grind. I did have fun last time we did it. My time last time was 1 hour and 27 minutes. And I personoly think that I can do better than that. But next time I go, I will try to take less breaks near the top. Because that REALLY slowed me down. I did try my hardest the first time. And I got to two awsome photos at the top and near the top. What I learned while dong the grouse grind the first time was that you. Will not achieve anything without trying your hardest!

I did not enjoy the field trip that much to the grouse grind because it was painfull. I might have almost died out there. I was cold and allergies was horrible. I learned that I am fit but not fit enough or that breakfast and sleep helps a person climb up the mountain better. I will improve my time by getting at least ten hours of sleep and eating breakfast that morning. I did not beat my time because I was cold, didn't have breakfast, not enough sleep and allergies stopped me from running or I just wasn't fast enough.

To be honest I really did not enjoy the grind because of the painful first quarter and the amount of times my ears popped! While going up as well as the number of times I had to pace myself.

What I learnt about myself today is that every time I go on the grind I get noticeably slower in my overall climbing time. And that I am not the kind of guy that likes or wants to climb a mountain.

And to be honest if there is a next time I will not know how to improve my time because every time I go on the grind even

I also didn't do it because my family and I are going hiking in Bamff Alberta this summer.I am going to explain more about the parent appersiation tea and what it is. It's when differant groups of kids from the school play instruments or sing or play games from another culture. The three groups were first the primary choir. Then there was grade fives plating a game from a diffrent caluter. Then we played our songs on the recorders. There was one song I was one the alto recorder it is a bigger recorder that sounds deeper.This summer me and my family are going to Alberta for a week to go camping and go hiking and lots of other things like that. We have rented a cabin to stay in close to the water so we can go fishing. And bouting, we are going to have so much fun there we can't wait to go.

It has been altered so kids use sticks instead of spears. Then we played our songs on the recorder. Okay, first of all, THIS WAS IN NO WAY ENJOYABLE. This mountian brought out demons that had been locked up in my soul for who knows how long, all I known is that I'm renaming that place Satan Mountian. The reason I thought this place was absolute torture is because the minute you get onto those steps you can feel your legs slowly disentagrating with every step you take, and the fact that there is bleach in your lungs now and you can't escape it because its already there.
2.) What did you learn about yourself today?
Well, I learned how much pain it's possible for one person to feel in the span of two hours that they're climbing, also that I really hate stairs now.
3.) What will you do next time to improve your time?
HA, WHO THINKS THEY CAN MAKE ME DO THAT AGAIN, NOPE, OLLIE'S OUTIES.
No but really I'm pretty sure nothing can help me up that mountian, I did everything they said would help and it still hurt.
4.) If you beat you previous time, how much time did you beat it by? If so, why do you think you beat it? If not, why not? Is it important to you if you beat your time or not? Explain.
I did beat my time, by a lot actually, it was around a hour better then my last time that I got, and you know how I beat it? I beat it because I knew the second I set foot on that dreaded trail that Satan was going to chase me all the way up with no mercy, and that if I didn't make I up in time I was surely going to die on that path because Satan has a big old throne on that mountain and no one can make him leave.

And I didn't beat my time either and I didn't beat it because I had to have to many breaks so I'm going to try and take less breaks next time.

1. To be honest I really did not enjoy the grind because of the painful first quarter and the amount of times my ears popped! While going up as well as the number of times I had to pace myself.
2. What I learnt about myself today is that every time I go on the grind I get noticeably slower in my overall climbing time. And that I am not the kind of guy that likes or wants to climb a mountain.
3. And to be honest if there is a next time I will not know how to improve my time because every time I go on the grind even if I'm larger I'm still going to be slower
4. And I didn't beat my time either and I didn't beat it because I had to have to many breaks so I'm going to try and take less breaks next time. And I don't really think it is important to say that you beat you time and I don't think you would care if you beat your time because its all about the acopleshment that you get from completing it.

I didn't really enjoy the field trip because I was so close to beating Mr Hong but out of no where he appeared. )= I learned that if you try hard enough you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. I also learned that there is a worse pain than breaking your bones and its doing the Grouse grind. To improve my time for next I will start getting ready by excercising a couple of months before the Grouse grind. I will also hydrate my self while going up the mountain. I will also hydrate myself while going up the mountain. I was lucky enough to beat my time by 4 minutes. My current record is 49 minutes. I think I was able to beat my time because I took short breaks so my heart rate did not slow down. It was important for me to beat my time because I felt great that day and I set my mind on beating my time.
