Tuesday: Measurable Properties of Matter

2/26/2013

Today, the students learned about measurable properties of matter and worked in groups to come up with a list of measurable ones and ones they could describe simply by using their senses. We discussed boiling and freezing points of different metals and the students researched how geologists and engineers remove precious metals from rocks that are found deep inside the earth. The questions the students came up with led to great discussions around the particle model of matter and the different boiling points of different metals.

1.) MATH 6: Chapter 6 Unit Task is due first thing tomorrow!
MATH 7: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) SHOWCASED BLOG:

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

To this day project

This is my story about bullying. It all started in a good summer. As I was coming back from camping I went to go hang it with some friends I called them at the time. We were at the school and they were filming each other doing stupid things. I was a little nervous to see if they wanted me to do that too. They told to do some easy stuf like jump of the swings but then it got bad they started threatening me to do things I was scared at the time. They said stuf like go across the monkey bars while we through rocks at you I was begging them to let stop. They said they would randomly hit me or kick me at this point it was just fear at this time. The threats they said were like we will push you off the big green box or punch you in the stomach so silly me I did the things. They started calling me gay and an idiot and spaz at school and at home and they used me because I did gymnastics they would say do a backflip and stuff like that. They would say do it you gay wimp which sometimes I would cry from that. I would come home with cuts and bruises and my mom would were did you get those in fear I would say I don't no. The next day said jump of the dugout in bare feet I siad " no do it yourself" they siad "no" then....BLAM... They kicked me where it hurts... I was on the ground crying then they started throughing rocks and said suck it up you gay wimp in anger I ran home crying and saying I'm not gay. They always call me gay and stupid but this time they took it too far. Later that day I told my mom she called one of there moms and siad what happend...they didn't get in trouble. To this day I can't stand getting called gay!

Everyone calls me “short”. I know I am not as big as the other kids in this class. I can admit that I am short. But, I do not like hearing about it. The kids at my school tease me about this most, my classmates do too. I’m not going to point fingers though. When they tease, me it feels like someone is punching my heart. It may seem that when someone calls me “short” I just take it as a joke, but it actually leaves a big dent. They say I am the same height as my sister and I haven’t grown a bit. People in my math class say that my head is gigantic and looks like a mushroom but my body is short. When one kid says it, every kid starts saying it and I can’t handle it so I start saying bad words. I don’t want to say them, but it gets me so frustrated. When I did say bad words, this guy says that big words come from small things. That did it, I wanted to punch him across the face, but I didn’t, because it would just continue. But this one kid, said that I am going to be really tall in High School. He made me so happy. But, not happy enough to handle the madness in people calling me “short”. To this day, I can’t stand it when people call me “short”.

So, don't worry about what everyone says because as long as you eat healthy food and exercise, you will grow just like everyone else! It just takes time and patience. :)

To this day........

Firstly, my sister got bullied in grade seven. She got called names and other mean things then they started to do it online. My mom and dad tried to stop it by telling the school what was happening they also, told the teacher but nothing happened. It got really bad that she was getting bad grades and my sister is really good at school but then she finished grade 7 and switched high schools. Then she got really good grades and now loves school and has better friends and is having fun. Secondly, This relates to Amanda Todd because she got bullied but it was because of a mistake and everyone makes mistakes. My mom saw this on the internet and she was really mad that she got little help that didn't even help she also, switched schools but that did not do anything for her the bully followed her to different schools. Then she could not take being bullied every day but this way more extreme from what happened to my sister.

It is always a good idea to share what is going on with your parents and your teachers so that they can do their best to help find a solution to a problem. This is something in the present.
Some people who I think are my friends are actually not sometimes. I may not be as skinny or fit as my friends, but when the call me fat, it makes me feel bad about myself. They say stuff like hey fatty, or you are so slow, some people say you are faster than me or you are not fat and that makes me feel good but soon after someone calls me slow or fat. And to this day I never like to be called fat or slow.

@ ????? - I think when someone calls another person a name, they are doing it for reasons that many of us don't understand. Perhaps they were made fun of and feel the need to make fun of someone else because they think it will make them feel better. However, when people do this, others can be hurt not physically, but emotionally. It is not right and it is very important for us to make sure that everybody knows this. Hopefully, if someone in out class called you this, they will now understand how it made you feel and maybe they will apologize to you. Have you received any apologies before? Do these people know how much it hurts you?

I haven't really gotten any apologies before, and I don't think they know how much it hurts because I never do it back. And a lot of the time it is because all they want to do be better than me, and put me down. One time we all tried out fora sport and i didn't make it and the one who I thought was my true friend was like yes and didn't say anything but the other one made it and he was like to me did you make it and I said no and he said good try.

Have you ever been bullied? Well I have and I'm going to share my experience with you.
In about grade 3 or 4 I would get teased and get called names, I thought it would never hurt me but it did. One time someone called me ugly, but I didn't believe them because I believe that everyone is beautiful in there own way. No one should think there ugly. It shouldn't matter what shape or size you are. Grade 3 was my first year at a school in Cloverdale. No one really knew who I was, so I would sometimes stay by myself at recess and lunch. It got better later in the year. I had more friends and more people wanted to be with me. To this day I believe that no one should be called fat or ugly because everyone is beautiful. The most powerful thing in this video was the beginning because he talked about his own experience.

@ Glice - I agree with you. It was very powerful to hear his personal experiences because many of us were able to make deep and personal connections to what he experienced. I'm glad to hear that it only happened in Gr. 3 and 4 and is not happening now. Remember, if it ever happens again you can always talk to your parents, your teacher, friends, or anybody else you trust.

Today when I walked to school I saw the usual things. The park, the empty mud pit, the old bike leaned up against the wall, and the flag of the school somewhere pretty far away. When I got to school I went to my class. I was early so I sat down with a book. That's when I heard it. A call. From somewhere far away, but definitely in the school. I got up and walked down the hall. That's when I saw her. A girl. She looked about the same age as me, with dark brown curly hair and she was lying on the ground. A teenager, about 17 or 18, was standing over her, poking her with a stick and screaming at her loudly. She was squealing and shaking as he poked her. I started running. As I got closer I heard what the teenager was saying. ''Why did you do that? WHY? Now the police are after me. You were suppost to hide, then walk out and distract her! What does breaking into this house mean to you?'' He was saying. I couldn't believe my ears. As I ran I got madder and madder. I ran faster and faster. When I finally got there I exploded with madness. I fell and slid between the teenager's legs. Me and the girl slid away from him in a pile. We quickly got up. The girl started running out of the building. I stayed behind. ''You can't get away with this.'' The teenager said. ''You can't do anything to get my secret out. Now, GET DOWN!'' ''Never!'' I said. I pulled out my cell phone and pressed 9-1-1. As soon as the teenager saw what I doing he turned and started running away. But he wasn't quick enough. Police officers enclosed around us, and one of them came forward with a pair of hand-cuffs. ''Your under arrest. Come with me.'' i couldn't believe what I had done. Suddenly the bell rang. School was starting. Boy, was my class in for an interesting show-and-tell.

Have you ever been bullied? Well I have and I would like to share my experience with you.I have a connection with this video because when I was young in kindergarten nobody wanted to play with me and so I would always be alone in kindergarten. To this day people still get bullied and treated unfairly I have still been called ugly but I choose to ignore it and the powerful thing about this video is that no matter who you are you are you for a reason don't ever think that you can be ugly because in my opinion ugly doesn't exist to me. Also I'm grade 2 I asked someone to play with me and they said that they don't like me and to go away I didn't want to go to school anymore... But I had to. I had nobody, nobody at all so I would just walk alone at recess and lunch and watch everyone else play with there best friends, well I didn't have a best friend until grade 3 and when she would go home I would pretend to be sick to becauseI had nobody who really wanted to hang out with me. It made me feel sad, depressed, unwanted at this school. Once before at this school when I was really young I was walking back to my class from recess and someone triped me and pushed me in the mud all I could do was lay there because I didn't now weather to get up or stay downi was crying and no one helped me up they hurt me so bad. Another thing that happened once was in grade 3 me and my best friend were in the class room and I was just drawing with her when this girl said teacher Amanda's copying her I said I didn't do anything and she would keep on tattling on me all the time I wasn't sure if I was aloud to stick up for myself. I have seen bullying before and it makes me feel sad and mad that people actually do that to other people.

Every day I feel that I am alone in the world. People pretend that I am not there. I feel that I have no friends and that people call me names behind my back and that make me feel that I am an outsider to them and they hate me. A couple years ago I was a lonely kid with no friends I tried to make friends but everyone I asked I was called dumb, then once I went to a park field and saw a guy that I have seen before so I went up to him and asked him what he was doing and he said oh I am just waiting, so you know me I ask "for what" and he said a friend so then I said can I wait with you. He then said you don't need to wait he is already here, (he was meaning I was his friend) so To this day ever sense then I always have some one to talk to and have someone to play with.

I have almost never been picked first for a team. Pain will leave deep scars. Scars will never leave, just tried to be hidden or covered up. They will haunt you. Almost every time I play a sport I am almost picked last. Nicknames can stay in your brain eating away never leaving. You may feel that you don't deserve to be here but you have to know what is inside the person 'cause a books cover can be very misleading. And being last is never a good feeling. It is not right to judge someone if they have something on their body or their weight. But, it does not bring me down, no one is perfect, and imperfections can destroy your childhood. There will always be a small thing that will just be covered up but always affecting the victim. If someone is watching me break-dance and said I was terrible I would not stop, no other person can stop me from trying. No one has ever been good at something without practicing and trying to succeed.

A good way to solve this is by practicing the sport hard so that the next time you are picked last and you play and they see how good you are they will either regret what they said or regret picking you last, and also tell them how you feel.

Hello I have a message about bullying please read it,and your worth it.
I did not get bullied so I do not know these feelings but they deserve better and if I ever see some one getting bullied I'll stop it one way or another. People need to stop this right Now I will do all I can to stop this,to those who or are getting bullied you are amazing those bullies are wrong. I knew a boy named Jack and he got teased but even then he did not feel bad because he was only teased. But I did witness a friend be called a "reborn hitler" that should not have happend. So for those who have been hurt: you are beautiful, you are worth it, you are amazing.

In grade 4 I was the only boy in my class. I had a really hard time making friends my age but I had no luck. I tried to make friends younger than me but it was hard because their on a different class and thier recess and lunch time are different than what times that i had. Sometimes I felt like I was a lonely child and maybe sometimes I felt like I was the last person on the earth cause I had no friends. But then a year later two boys came to the school and that made everything much better.

The school I went to was called Langley Montessori. And yes there was other boys but they were younger than me and there is only one grade 4,5,6,7 class altogether.

The message in the video Shane is trying to tell you is that if you and when you fall down, you need to push your self back up. Even if you are being teased and bugged no matter what. And that they... Were wrong... Just like how in grade three everyone would get teased. But in a way It would not be such a big deal back then. But now you would be herding into high school. Once you get into that 4-2 years of school you pretty much won't have any choice but to be bugged. They will all do it. You don't have any choice. To this day in grade 6. You will still get bullied but you won't even know it. And how do you think others would feel when they are being bullied. On this moment there is someone being bullied right now. I think that the video is trying to tell you to stay strong no matter what any body says and how everybody is beautiful. Truthfully I have not really been bullied but one of my friends has they called him/her names and were very rude to him/her and made fun of him/her. him/her started ignoring them and they still did it, but him/her still ignored them even though they were so rude him/her, him/her picked themselves up and the people that were bullying him/her stopped. just remember treat people the way you wanted to be treated.

The video “To This Day” is based on a poem. This poem reminds us that there is still a lot of verbal abuse in schools and society; things that the anti-bully programs are trying to reduce but it is not having the fast effects that was intended. The sadness in the story reminded me of the sadness that must have been felt by Amanda Todd when she was being bullied; she was one of the ones that fell of the tight-rope. Yet there are many kids now in schools here in the Lower Mainland that are asked to comment on human rights, and can think of rights others should have in far off countries; but may observe bullies at school and in their neighbourhood and not do anything to oppose them.

Anti bullying.
Bullying is a horrible thing that does not make everyone happy, people bully other people by doing many different things. But the main things is words many people get called disrespectful names that they probably don’t like. Another thing is violence not many people like the feel of being hit I don’t know why people chose to do those harmful things to people it is not nice at all and it needs to stop. I do not know why people judge other people on there looks personality and other stuff. I have not had much experience with being bullied and I hope not to have a future to do with bullying. If I ever got bullied really bad im sure it would not feel good at all. But there is always someone to talk to if you are having problems with being bullied. And like I said earlier BULLYING NEEDS TO STOP!

To start, everyone outs beautiful in their own ways. The heart of a person expresses their true beauty, the beauty that can't be seen on how they look on the outside. This video made me remember of a boy who was in grade 3 with me. He was always being called names and people would hit him, he tried to shrug it off but it was too much for him to handle, eventually even he started fight back when someone hit him. I didn't do anything I was small, weak, and I never bothered with what was going on around the school. The most touching part of this story was when he said the girl who was called ugly and still she thinks thinks shes ugly even when she is raising two kids whose definition of beautiful is mom. She still thinks that because of that one person who called her UGLY. This video made me feel sad and emotional. If that was me I would be so mad that I would hate the person who insulted me but I would not try to get even because at the end of the day I know that THEY WERE WRONG!!

I think a deep connection I have is when people call me names. I don't like it and it isn't really funny in my opinion. I feel angry and sad when people do this, like they don’t have something better to do with their lives. And even though I do know some names I am called seem minor, I never will forget. Ugly, stupid, weird are just few minor names I was called before. I never take this as a joke, so when people do this- Sometimes even my friends- I’m hurt. These names I will never forget and they are stuck with me whenever I think about it. Although, as I grew up a learned to ignore it even though it still bugs me a little. When I was younger, I was very sad when people did this but not really anymore. I got called many names so I guess I got used to it. Everyone is beautiful and unique in their own way so that is why you should also learn to stand up for yourself. Don't mind what others may say because their hurtful and negative comments don't really matter. Even though I rarely get called names now, and I haven’t been physically bullied before, just teased. I feel bad for all of the people that are victims of this. I always wonder how they feel because of people's unkindness. Sometimes, I even see people teasing my friends. Everyone has imperfections and you are are no different. Just remember that no one, and I mean NO ONE is perfect, yet we are all equally beautiful and unique. That’s what makes us special.

I was in grade.1 when I thought my world was coming to an end. It started with rumors then to rude remarks then to name calling. In the beginning the rumors were hurtful but I got over it. Then the rude remarks were constant all I heard was Is your birthday in ?????, Are you as dark as ????? and you are fatter than the month ?????. Then it was name calling I have been called every single month and have been called fat, ugly and even not wanted. The kids in my class were extremely rude they said these things in front of the teacher, my teacher didn’t do anything she stood there and listened but did nothing. I never told my mom what happened scared the kids would hurt me if they found out I told an adult. I came home with the words they said in my head not wanting to cry in front of my mom I would run home. when I got home I would run in my bedroom and cry. After a month it got worse I did not want to eat thinking I was fat. I finally told my mom everything that happened. Soon after that we moved houses and i switched schools. I have always wondered why we switched houses the house I am living in now is much bigger but I always wonder if it was also about me getting bullied and wanting a new and more friendly school. “To this day” I still get called names and mean things are said but I know it is not true. I have good friends that surround myself now and even if i do get bullied i know my friends will help me through it.

Have you ever been bullied? Well, I haven't but I'm guessing that many of you have. Today I'm here to talk to you about bullying. I have a couple friends who get bullied. The definition of bullying is when someone uses superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants. In my words I think bullying is when someone CONSTANTLY bothers someone verbally or physically. There's a difference between someone being mean and a bully. Amanda Todd got bullied and bullied by so many people. She got bullied because she did something wrong and everyone teased her about it. It continued on and on and she kept it in and she even had to move schools. Every school she moved to, there was always someone who knew about it and the word spread quickly. She couldn't handle it any more, so, she tried to commit suicide(kill herself) by drinking bleach. But it didn't work. At school people teased her by saying "why don't you try a different brand of bleach". She cut herself as we'll. But finally, enough was enough and she commit suicide. See that's what append when bullying gets too out of control, so next time you think of telling someone there "stupid" or "ugly", think again. You never know, you might be bullying someone when you don't even know it.

In my opinion, I think there were two messages in the video. Number one, words hurt, and that we are all beautiful, in any way. Words hurt more than you can ever imagine. You can't take back words, one little thing, one word, can change a persons life. For the worse. Whatever you look like, whatever religion you are, we are all beautiful. It does not matter if we are different. We are all equal.
I have been bullied....... In grade 1. I don’t really remember a lot, so bear with me. I do not remember what it was about, but this kid would always tease me, and make fun of me. Then it would get to the point where I wouldn’t go out for recess because this kid would always follow me around and bug me. I felt small, scared, and afraid. I told my parents and my teacher and they worked it out. Then in grade 2, he stopped teasing me. I felt happy, and relieved. Also, in the start of grade 3, he moved schools.

So remember, if you are getting bullied, or you see someone getting bullied, ask an adult to help you/them.

This video is very inspirational to me, and many others around the world. It truly gives out a good message and is very touching. I haven't been treated the way Shane Koyczan had, but throughout my life there have been incidents that I will never forget. Firstly, I really didn't want to give out who I really am. But after thinking about it for a very long time, I realized that no one will really understand the true emotion if they don't actually know who you are. Also, for me there is no meaning telling my story if you guys don't know who I am. That's just my opinion. Anyway, I have been treated unfairly and not included just because of how I look and my skin colour. In my early ages, I would be left out and it was really hard for me to understand how and why people did this to me. Later on I realized that the stuff that people called and thought of me, did not matter what so ever. I really want to tell people that the things that people call you are plain stupid. You are beautiful no matter who you, what you believe in, or even how you look like. I totally understand if you think that other people are more "up there" than you. Sometimes people think that I am dark, so they think differently of me. But those things will never bother me at all.

I talked about it with my parents, and they are the people who gave me a big boost to overcome it. They told me that I was born the way I was born and I can't change that. I am unique for who I am and the way I look. So the things that people say aren't true and I shouldn't even worry about it.

When ever i go home, my dad would always tell me "get over it." I didn't believe that i could but i mustered my courage and overcame my depression. When the world looks as if it turns its back to you, look closer and think why it has. Overcoming your fear or problems is a great triumph but is one of the hardest things to achieve. When ever this happens, try harder, think deeper, commit even tougher, strengthen your mind, fill your heart with willpower, become your own champion. Everyone has opportunities, don't let yours slip away. Take your chances and believe you can fight, trying will always be better than not doing anything.
