Reading Strategies - Setting a Purpose

Today, students had their first lesson on the Novel Approach. More specifically, they learned about 'SETTING A PURPOSE' when they read in order to improve their understanding. On a first read, many people read simply to get a feel for what they are reading. On the second read, some people like to read for words they don't understand so they can figure out what the words mean. Other people simply read for enjoyment. The lesson here is that we read things multiple times with a different purpose so we can better understand what we are reading. Parents, please ask your child to share their NOVEL APPROACH reading strategy booklet with you so you can get a better idea of what they are learning.

1.) MATH 6:

Pg 89 #1-7 Chapter 3 Lesson 6 of the textbook. Complete all questions.

MIDDLETON MATH 7: Pg. 25 #1-9
WILSON MATH 7: Pg 37 #1-5

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about 'SETTING A PURPOSE' when reading in order to help you understand what you are reading.
Using the Social Studies article all of you took home today, do the following:

   1.) Read the two pages at least 3 times. For each time you read your article, write down a different
   PURPOSE.
   2.) Use your background knowledge and make a connection to something from the article. Be sure
   to explain what you are connecting to and how you are connecting to it. Do not simply say, "I
saw a poster of the liberal party and can connect to the article." This is a poor example.
3.) List three things you did to monitor your comprehension of the article. For example, "I looked in
the dictionary to find the meaning of a word."

Give one student a suggestion on how to improve their work.
Edit/revise based on suggestions your receive or your self-assessment.

Hello there Mr. Hong! How are you? Are you having a great school year? Well, I am! In Fact, I have P.E next semester which means I can finally go to a weight room/ gym. And guess what! We had a soccer tournament in North Vancouver! However, we lost and won 2 games! I also scored a goal! And I cant wait until we go to Portland and Kelowna for another tournament!

Please make sure you do a better job at explaining your connection. You were told in class not to write anything like, "My connection is that I heard of Justin Trudeau." Does that make sense?

I searched up the word mandate and it means an official order or to do something. I also made a connection when they talked about polls although it was a short sentence I still made a connection. The connection was that I have played a game I have to take polls everyday and it is very fun.

That is what my purposes were set on what are yours?

When I read it the second time I connected to the voting because my parents strongly believe voting will make a difference. Purpose:

I made a connection with this because in the first paragraph parliament was bold and I remembered when I went to see the parliament buildings in Victoria when I was in grade 5. It was a really fun experience to see all the rooms and stuff they use.

I monitored my comprehension when I saw the word, dissolution. I didn't know what this word meant but luckily it was bold so I could check on the back of the page and see what it means. I found out that it means when there is a dissolving of parliament before an election.

Purpose-

My first purpose is to read through the whole article and ask questions or make connections along the way. Secondly, re-read and deepen your understanding by trying to answer your questions. Then, my third purpose is to re-re-Read and see if there is anything that you missed or want to add. Finally, if you want to, you can read it again for pleasure.

In the article, I looked up seat because I didn't know if it was a car seat or a couch or even a toilet! It turns out that they meant a position in the House Of Commons.

I have been to a voting poll with Mother Of The Hen House before, except it was for the municipal election.

I had a connection when I went to the Parliment Buildings because when I went I saw where the next party that would win would sit in the Parlement Buildings in Victoria BC that was cool because I also got to learn that there was 338 seats where the party sits and also thing I got to see was that people got to seat and watch the fight and arugument. I looked on the internet to see what recession mean. Means the receding or withdrawn basicly means did better.

1.) Read your first sentence. I would separate it into two sentences.
2.) Rewrite your second sentence so it is clear and concise.
3.) Reread your final sentence and split your ideas into two separate sentences.

The first time I read the article to get a feel for the words on the page. That means to just read, not writing much yet. Then, for my second purpose, I did M.C./understanding what it means. I learned something in the first paragraph. I didn't know Tom Mulcair was actually Thomas Mulcair. I didn't know what dissolution meant, but I noticed it was in bold print. I looked at the bottom of both sides because once we did an article in class last year and there was the definition to the bold words at the bottom. I found it on the back, and the definition is: The dissolving of Parliament before an election. I think that polls means the votes they have from early voters. My dad said he likes Conservatives because nothing went wrong when they were in power, which is a connection to The Economy. I agree with Mr. Trudeau when he said, "When the middle class does well, so does the entire country."
Do you? Not very many young people are interested in politics these days, so that means less voting. That makes Canada's government more of a dictatorship because less people get to a say in what they want our country to be like. I'm still unsure who I would vote for if I could, but it would probably be NDP or Liberals. Finally, I made connections using my background knowledge. Like I already said, I made a connection about my dad and the Conservatives, and I have a couple of connections with the NDP. The last 2 aren't really related to the article, but I just thought I would mention them. First, when Mr. Mulcair said he would create a child care program to help the parents so they can work, I thought of that article we read in class about the main points that the 4 parties care about and what they will do to make Canada a better place. My second connection apples to all the parties. When I read about the polls and who could win, I connected to that because when I was looking at the website we did for CAARP/CRAAP, there was a list of the polls from when it was updated. Thirdly, When Mr. Hong said if one of the political parties called we should answer and ask questions, Rebecca Smith called us again, and I answered, but it was actually a recording. Lastly, I think my grammy was once part of the NDP, and I thought that was pretty cool, so I mentioned it now. My connection with the Liberals is when Justin said he would help the middle class, I (again) remembered the article that we did in class about the points. I can relate to people not voting because I know some people who don't vote. These are the strategies and purposes I used for my reading.

Setting a purpose:
#1: Read for a feel of the article.

#2: Read to ask questions.
+Who will win the election?
+Which party has the best platform?
+Will there be a majority or minority government?

#3: Read to make a connection.
*I made a connection when Mr. Trudeau says to cut taxes on middle class. Since, when the middle class does well, the country does well. I think that the country does well, since most of Canada is middle class families.

#4: Read to monitor comprehension.
=What does dissolution mean. It means "The act of dissolving into parts or elements."
=Independents are single candidates, that can hold the most power, if the major parties all have the same amount of seats.
=What is a recession? A recession is "A period of reduced business activity."

#5: To summarize a big idea.
^I think the big idea is about what happens in an election, and who are the main candidates.

#6 Read for pleasure.

That is how you set a purpose.

The connection I made was like many other peoples. When I got to go to the Parliament Buildings in Victoria because that was such an amazing experience and it connects with what we are learning now. I find it even more interesting now because I know all about the parties and how they get seats and stuff. Also, I got to see the chambers where they do the debates and the lady who was showing all of us around was taking about how back in the older years when people did not agree they would take out their swords and fight. Pretty cool right?

MOMITORING MY COMPREHENSION:
One thing I did to monitor my comprehension was searching a word in the dictionary. Another thing I did was searching a word up online. The last thing I did was read the words before and after the word and poof I knew what it was. These are three strategies I used to monitor my comprehension while reading this. Each time I read through the paragraph I set a purpose such as:
My first purpose is: Get a feel of what the article is about. The article is about how the voting works and it tells us a little bit about each party and what party has the most chance of getting the most votes.
My second purpose is: To use my background knowledge and to make connections.I have made a connection because when I ride my scooter,walk or drive every one in a while I see the signs of the head representative for each party. I have also been in and seen the parliament buildings.
My third purpose is : To monitor my comprehension. I did not know what a economic downturn was. I searched it up and I found that it is a business downfall.
My forth and final purpose is: To summerise what the article is about. The big idea is to tell the readers what party has the most chance of getting the most votes, who the representatives are and how the voting works.

Connection: When the article said university degree it reminded me of my sister because she in university getting her degree now.

Monitor Comphension: I didn't understand the word mandate so I asked my dictionary and my dictionary stayed it ment: the authority of an elected government or official to do the things that they promised to do before an election. Another way I monitored my Comphension was I didn't understand the word recession so I asked my mom and she said it ment: six months of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product ( GDP )

My first purpose was to make connections about what I am reading. I made a connection when we're talking about how you vote I rember when my parents were talking about how to vote when they voted for the mayor. I re-read to make sure I understand everything I'm reading and to make sure I didn't skip a sentence. Today I got a booklet of the liberal party on my porch... I read it and it was talking about some of the things the liberal party supports so that give me more backround knowledge.

@Turtle good job. some of my suggestions is to be more specific about your purposes because you said to monitor comprehension. What reading stragety ydid you use to monitor your comprehension? And to understand? do you mean to get a better understnading of what yyour reading? Also, my other suggestion is what about you read reminded you of Dean Drysdale or John Aldag? On your second sentence you said background knowledge, I do not understand what you mean. Last thing I want to suggest is to remember your puncuation, grammar, and you misspelled John Aldag's name. Again, good job!

I've went to the parliament building in ottawa and victoria for a tour. Also I have met two of the people that are running for M.P.(Dean Drysdale,John Aldag)

What does dissolution,dissolving and recession mean?

answer:recession means six months of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product (G.D.P.) /Dissolution: the dissolving of parliament before an election/Dissolve:to make a solution

To begin with, the connection I made was about the economy. What was written that made my connection was when they said, "Unemployment is especially high for young people." I made a connection because my sister was a applying for a job at Tim hortons, but they denied her application because they said they had tooo many teeagers and were looking for more adults. Also, my other connection was about when I was in grade 5 my classmates and I got to go to Victoria and her courthouse. I got to see inside there were seats in a court, and I would imagine it is similar to Canada's 42nd parliament.

The reading strategies I used to monitor my comprehension was asking questions, using google to define words, and rereading slower to help me understand. To ask questions, I asked my mom what her idea is about a healthy democracy, she said she thinks it means everybody has an equal vote, opinion, and say. Also, to define words I googled up gross domestic product because it was explaining how six months of negative economic growth is measured by a country's Gross domestic product. Google states that gross domestic product (GDP) is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period. Lastly, I reread ,some of the sentences I don't understand slower and out loud to help me understand, because sometimes when I read I do not understand completely what I am reading.
