TUESDAY: Setting a Purpose

Learning about fractions

Today, students learned more reading strategies. The learning intention of the day was, "I can set a purpose when I read.' Students learned that each time they read something, the purpose changes and they learn something new. Today, on the first read, many students read for pleasure in order to get a feel for song lyrics. On the second read, many students read to deepen their understanding. For homework, students were asked to discuss page one of their 'NOVEL APPROACH' booklets with their parents and to go over the learning intentions listed on that page. Parents, please be sure to ask your children about their handout.

1.) LA: Discuss the learning intentions on page one of your 'NOVEL APPROACH' handout.

2.) MATH 6: No homework.
MATH 7: Any assigned work.

We go over the iChart so everybody knows what is expected of them. For example, we have 2 iCharts. One for instruction and one for working. Some of the stuff we have on the during instruction iChart is to listen and be present. We have to be working independently and not distract others on our working iChart. Today we learned about setting a purpose. You need to set a purpose in order to understand more. When you read something for the first time you understand. But when you read it again you understand even more witch makes you enjoy the story or aticle a little more.

We set a purpose before reading because then we know what are reason for reading is and we know what to look for while reading. @ Hero of Ages - That's a great question! I read through all of your 'VISIBLE THINKING' sheets and all of you pushed my thinking. However, two students in particular had some particularly interesting and thought provoking comments that pushed my thinking. These students were Meagan and Jenna.

Today's lesson began with the teacher reading the IChart, we do this so that the students and teachers know what is expected of them. The reading strategy we learned today was setting a purpose for our reading. When you read something for the first time you don't understand the full meaning of what the author is trying to say. When you read it for the second time you pick up more details and then when you read it for the third time you understand the full meaning of what the author is saying (the big idea). Jenna pushed my thinking today, she pushed my thinking by telling me what she thought and that gave me ideas.

This lesson started when Mr. Hong read the ichart, we did this so that teachers and students know what the baseline is. The stratigy we learned from reading is setting a purpose for our reading. Most of the time when you read something first time you probably don't understand as much but when you read it a 2nd or 3rd time you understand better. Tristan pushed my thinking by pushing my paper away and when he did that I could 3 more answers to put on my paper.

The lesson began with us going over the ichart we made yesterday. Then we read a peom about how there are no rules in poetry. We began all lessons with this because we review the expectations given to us and we use the poem to get us ready for the work sheet and to get us in the mood. When you read something for the first time you get ready for the questions you try to answer in the next read.(you sort of get prepared). Then the second time you get a better feel for what the poem (or whatever your reading) is saying. Then the third time you check for your understanding from all you read and make sure you have lots of questions, comments, and predictions about what the moral is. Mr. Hong pushed my thinking today when he came to me and started asking me questions about it. That really got me thinking about what the true sort of like big idea emerged.

Well, the way we started today's lesson and probably will be doing this every time was by reviewing the iChart and to use the iChart rules for each lesson such as L.A. mainly. Why we started today's lesson with it was so we can set a purpose for what were doing on that lesson such as understanding it or maybe referring back. Why we set a purpose before reading is to help us understand, like I mentioned a few sentences up, and so we could make connections and see what the author is trying to stay. It's like a step-by-step process. When you read it for the first, second, and third time you start to understand every bit of it each time you read it, if you can visualize or connect to the story it could maybe help you understand what the topic is even more. I don't think anyone pushed my thinking a lot, but Sean and Mr. Hong pushed it a bit further more towards understanding it. How Mr. Hong pushed my thinking was he helped me understand what the topic was, at first I didn't understand the topic of the sheet we were doing. Next, he gave me hints that the song was about a metaphor of your life, as I understood it a bit more, Sean pushed my thinking a bit further by giving me things that I never would have thought of. But I didn't copy off of him for it.

We start with the iChart because we need to know what the criteria is and what we need to do. We also need to know how we need to act when working independently. Today we learned about making a purpose for your reading. Why do you need to read it? Was it for enjoyment or for a school assignment? We set a purpose before we read because we need to know why we are reading it to get a better understanding. For example, your purpose could be reading off information and putting notes in your notebook but if you don't know what your purpose is then you don't know what to find.

When I read something for the first time I read it for enjoyment, the second time I read to look for gift of words and write down my thoughts of metaphors and things like that, and for the third time I read it to look for the message behind the song or poem. Of course, I re-read it more than 3 times for my understanding so if I don't get something, I'll re-read it to understand better.

I had two partners that pushed my thinking. One said that the tattoos and memories were scars which made me think deeper and I thought that scars last for a long time just like tattoo and memories. My other partner said that it was to live life to the fullest, which I thought deeper into it and thought that you could die anyway, anytime so you have to live life to the fullest, if you don't you'll regret it.

It begin with talking about setting a purpose but if you don't have a purpose for reading than what is reading. The strategy we used is setting a purpose for are reading. We set a purpose for reading so we can understand what we are reading. When you read something for the first time you read for pleasure for the second time you read for key words and for the third time you read for questions. Caleb push my thinking today. Today we learned about setting purposes for reading. When reading for a second or even third time your reading purpose changes. We set purposes before reading so we can monitor compression. Today I pushed myself to do more because I new that what I began with was not satisfactory enough. I did so by forcing myself to do more.

We set a purpose be for readING so that we know what to look for in the book or piece of writing. Usually when I read something the first time I read for pleasure when the second or third is to learn something. Kavishka pushed my think be saying that the song had a lot of medafores and then I thought oh when it said fork in the road it didn't actually mean a fork.

Today, our lesson began with the learning intention. Tody, our learning intention was was to be able to set a purpose by the end of the lesson. We begin with this every time because it helps us understand what we have to achieve by the end of the lesson. It is almost like a goal. Today, our learning intention was was to be able to set a purpose by the end of the lesson. The reason we set a purpose for our reading is so we know why we are reading what we are reading. When you read something more than once, your purpose should change every time. To illustrate, your purpose for reading can be for enjoyment, to study, to get better at reading, and much more. Today Damian pushed my thinking. He did this by helping me better understand some of the metaphors that I thought were confusing.

A readers purpose affects everything about reading. It determines what's important in the text, what is remembered, and what comprehension strategy a reader uses to enhance meaning.

At the beginning of he sentence we started with the learning intentions(I think) we always start with this so you understand what your learning.

why do you read 1,2, or 3 times you ask? To set a diffrent purpose for your reading. for me the first time was for plesure, second time to understand the words, and third to pursue interest.

And the person who "pushed my thinking" was @julio. He helped me by giving me better ideas and giving me feedback on what I did.

We start with the I-Chart, because we need to make sure what are the learning intentions so we can understand better, and to know what we do. We also start with the I-Chart so that we can review the criteria before we follow the criteria. Why do we begin all lessons with the I-Chart? Well firstly, we started the ichart for the lesson today so that we can set a purpose for our reading, and there are many different purposes. Right? Of course! Setting a purpose for our reading have many meanings. Either it is just reading for enjoyment for the first time or looking for information, facts, or even getting ideas. The learning strategy I learned today was again setting a purpose for my reading. Why do we set a porpoise on our reading? Well firstly, we set a purpose on our reading so that we can get a better understanding on what the learning intentions are, to make connections and finding big ideas. As we read over 3 times we would have different purposes, like the first read might be just for enjoyment, the second read can be finding information, facts, and the third read might be finding ideas or even visualizing. Basically, we will use differnt purposes for our reading like I mentioned above. Today Brooke/ Pebbles pushed my reading. How? Well at first I was thinking about what the matephor "Fork stuck on the road" means and so Brooke/ Pebbles told many different meanings which made me even think deeper. Like "fork on the road" might mean a problem in life or a obstacle.

We begin every lesson with learning intentions. We do this because we have goals we have to follow. We begin all lessons with this for better understanding of the subject. The reading strategy we learned about today is, that you should always set three purposes of why you are reading or any other thing you are doing. For example, say if you are reading a good book. Why? Are you reading for fun? For understanding? Or just to find the big idea of the book?

You should always have a purpose to what you are, for example reading. You would say at first maybe just for fun. Then to make sure you understand what you are reading about. Then you would put what would the big idea be? .

The person that pushed my thinking was probably Skaterboi. He helped me by giving me very good feedback about making better ideas for what i did.
