Outdoor Learning

We were lucky enough to have a beautiful day of sun today! It allowed us to go outside to learn more about track and field, more specifically, relay running and baton passing. The students worked on their running drills (A, B, and C drills) and the three phases of sprinting. In addition to this, they learn how to communicate with their relay teams in order to be successful. For a team to be successful in anything, communication is an integral component of success.

1.) SCIENCE:

Communicate with your group and decide who will bring the following items for tomorrow: small tupperware/container, log book/paper, pencil/pen, and small items for people to trade when they find your geocache.
If you have time and your parents are willing, go to www.geocaching.com and sign up using your school email address and school postal code. See if you have time to search one out in your area. Very important - DO NOT GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT ADULT SUPERVISION!
If you go geocaching with adult supervision, please post a message here including the coordinates of the geocache and what you found.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

What skills do you think you are learning when geocaching?
What technology helps you geocache?
Why do you think so many people have set up geocaching locations? What makes it so interesting for people?
Ask one student a question about their response.

When geocaching you can get the skills of how to use a map. For example, when you are geocaching you have a app on a device thats a map and it helps you get to where it is. You can also get communication skills while geocaching because you are most likely geocaching with a group. What I am implying is, when you are working with a group you have to talk to each other and be respectful to your peers and this will help you find a geocache because you don't know the exact location. Some technology is a cell phone like apple. Also, a GPS because I am pretty positive you can download it on there because my Aunt did. There is so many locations because so many people enjoy geocaching. I think it is interesting for people because it is like an adventure. When I did it it was cool because you had to climb trees go through bushes and when you got there you got to take something cool out of the box and put something new in. I really loved geocaching and I'm exited that we get to do it in class! Are you exited to geocache?

I actually did geocaching today and I have the app, so what I learned from doing it was to NOT do anything dumb, like climb a super tall tree that can cause you to fall when the box isn't even there. I also learned how to track the chests but not any of the hard ones. The only technology that helps me geocache was my iPhone, but a special device that has a geocaching watch allows you to geocache, not only that but a device works too like an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Microsoft Phones, Samsung Phones and other phone products. I think the reason behind this geocaching game is so people can have an experience on how to use this app or how to treasure hunt. That and so people can actually spend more times in the outdoors more often.

@Tacosaur, I only did two of them since I didn't have the time to do lots more and I decided to do it with friends another time. I did the Willoughby Trail Cache #3 since it's closest to me and the JUST GOT ANOTHER CACHE BY THE WALL one. Weird name for the second one.

When I was doing geocaching today I learned not to do anything dumb just to find a box that isn't even there like climbing halfway to the top of a tree or going to places out of the geocache box location. And not only I learned those but to track down chests and explore more about my area. Maybe some day I might have to put lots of effort into finding a hard geocache box. Practically any sort of technology that can guide you to specific locations you mentioned like GPS' and mobile devices, but not a gameboy or a Thomas the Tanker Train play set. And from what I learned was that people set up these things to test their skills and put it to the limit and see how good they are at keeping an eye out for things, how to use the special treasure hunting app and to get more personal/bonding time with nature or the outdoors.

When geocaching you can get the skills of how to use coordinates where the caches are and maps so you know witch way you are going. A GPS can find the cache. People set up locations that are beautiful and memorial for them and they want people to explore. But some people take all the things from the box and ruin all the fun for others.

The skills you learn are how to read coordinates and how to use coordinates to find the destination you need to go. The technology that use is your phone GPS that has coordinates that you need to find the geocache. I think when these people set up these destinations for people to find they wanted them to have fun on there adventure there and what they got and what else they could get in a different box.

When geocaching you learn how to take directions, take routes according to the directions, and explore the world around you. The technology you use to geocache is anything with gps within it. (This also helps you learn how to use these pieces of technology. The only two reasons I can think of for someone creating a geocache is to either be a part of the community or they feel that they have found so many they want to do the same for others.

When geocaching some of the skills you learn are the ability to use a map on you device, and to use coordinates to find the object. The technology you use to geocaching are electronic devices such as phones, ipads, mini ipads, ect. I think people have set up geocaching locations because, of curiosity, and the fact that lot's of people like to explore. To conclude what makes people so interested is, I think is that you are sort of going on a scavenger hunt, looking for free stuff, and who doesn't like getting free stuff.

You learn how to navigate a gps, follow cordinates, and search for things. A gps or your phone help you geocache. It is interesting because it gives you an idea of adventure and it is fun to challenge yourself.

The skills you learn when you go gecaching is, how to use coordinates in our lives. In other words, how to put the skills we use at school into our everyday lives. For example, in grade 5 you learn about longitude and latitude and now you can use this wisdom and going geocaching so you are implementing what you learn into everyday activities such as geocaching. To geocach you need technology to help you navigate to this pristine treasure. This is why you will need to equip yourself with a GPS tracking device. This tracking device can be an all in one GPS device or you can use an iPhone, Android, iPad, tablet, etc. Literately any device that supports GPS tracking. I think that people hide these for others because they enjoy hiding stuff for other people and the really enjoy geocaching so they want to make one so other people can enjoy it. Their passing on the joy of the activity.

The things you need to geocache is GPS systems and phones to help you guide where your going and to find what you need.

You will have to use the GPS system and phone because you need to find the box and you have to know where you are or else you will get lost and you won't know where you are.

I think you learn how to have fun and how to find your inner wild side while finding Geo cashs. You get coordinates to find them and put them into your GPS or get the app on your phone to find them and the app will have a compos to guide you in the right direction. I think the reason so many people hide them is so others can feel a sense of adventure when there looking and when them find them

I think you need to know how to read a map and coordinets. You need the coordinates and a gps or map. I think people made geocaching because it's good exercise. People liked because they get exited and they like the temptation and adrenaline high.

What skills do you think you are learning when geocaching?

When geocaching, I think it helps you with lots of things, trust, determination, and finding locations. first I will start with trust, I think it helps with trust because when you find a geocache you need to trust that you went all this way and someone stole it or just threw it back into place. Secondly I think it builds determination, with geocaching when you try to find one it can be tricky so you can't just give up or else there is no prize at the end! The whole point is to look, and find so you need to set your mind to it. Lastly I think you learn how to find where you are in the world. With geocaching you locate where you are with GPS's and maps so it helps you learn how to use these things.

What technology helps you geocache?

We use things like GPS's and maps these pieces of tech help us with our everyday things like getting to work or finding a brand new store you want to go to.

Why do you think so many people have set up geocaching locations?

What makes it so interesting for people?
I think the reason for this is because people like me love the outdoors even if its just a short brisk walk in the park. Then what the do is people spice it up a little and have a little extra fun with geocaching. Also wouldn't you be stoked if you found out that people from all around the town, city, or even the world came to find YOUR cache?

I think that the skills you would need to Geo Cash is navigating and location skills. I think that the tech you need to do this is to have a device such as an Ipod touch or an Ipad touch. I think that people like Geo cashing so much because it is outdoors and is fun to find, get a random free item, place one of your own items inside, sign your paper with your code name on it and then move to the next one.

Some skills that I think that we are learning is how to read coordinates and go to the correct spot. If we don't know how to read the coordinates then we'll go to a different location and that's not what we want. Also you need these skills to know where you're going so you don't get lost. I think that you can use any device that holds the app so Iphones, Ipads, and even Samsung. I think people set up geocaching because it's fun to look for things and a lot of people like puzzles and having to move around. Also everyone loves a good mystery and finding things. It's sort of like a scavenger or treasure hunting game.

Some skills I think people learn when geocaching is sense of direction and how to read a compass or coordinates. For example you will learn directions because when you read a compass telling you which way to go it will stink in your memory which way is north and south ect. You phone helps you geocache because there is an app that shows you where all of the are and the directions to go there also phones because they have a gps. I think people have set up geocaching because overall it seems like a fun activity and it helps the community grow together.

Skills I think that are used in geocaching are how to use a map and read coordinates to go to that exact spot or that locations area. If people didn't know how to read coordinates you could have someone going to Walmart and end up in Whistler if they didn't know how to read a map.
The technology that helps you geocache are any devices like a Samsung, Iphone or even an Ipad as long as you download the app. People set up geocaching because it helps people get a better understanding of how to perfectly read one of those fold up maps. It is really cool because one time I spent over 15 minutes looking for it and when I found it, it had a wooden tiki charm and on the tag and it said "take me to BC" (I found this geocache in Trinidad). The feeling when you actually find what your looking for is the best feeling.

You are learning about nature if its in a forest, or you can experience new parts of town. You use technology by using your phone for a map. Without that you wouldn't be able to geocache at all. It is a very interesting thing for some people so it makes it interesting. They set up these locations for fun and give different people different learning chances.

I think that you learn many things when geocaching. Although, the biggest thing that I think you learn is how to follow instructions properly. When geocaching, you learn how to follow the instructions because you have to follow the path/compass to the box. The technology that helps you geocache is your phone and a GPS. You need your phone to get the geocaching app and a GPS to find the actual box. I think that so many people have set up geocaching locations because it is enjoyable to see how many people have come to your geocache location and after a while, you get to see what is in the box that you set up. I think so many people enjoy geocaching because it is like a scavenger hunt that can be played at any time all around the world.

I think that the skills you would need to geocashing are how to read a map and coordinates. If you are going to find the right place, you have to be able to read coordinates. However if you don't you are going to get lost. I think the technology that help us to geochash is the devices such as Samsung, Ipads, Iphones and more. We can download the app on any devices. I think many people set up geocashing because it is really fun to find something.

@Mr. Hong, I am really sorry that I posted late ;-( The reason was, because, I had my Langley FC premier league evaluations right after school. I also, had another LUSA soccer practice after the evalutions. And guess what! I scored one goal for Langley FC, and I scored another goal for LUSA! Yes! Two goals! OOPS! I went the wrong way! To start, there are many things we can learn from geocaching either it is, following instructions, making the right decision, and lastly, but, not least how to read coordinates. Firstly, we can learn on how to follow instructions if we go step-by-step instead, of knowing where the box is. For example, if there was a specific coordinate you missed because, you didnt follow were to go because, you weren't following the steps on where the box is. With this in mind, we can learn how to make right desicions in a specific situation where we could think critically if I should do this or not. To illustrate, if you had to cross a deadly lava river, we would probably stop and think that this is a big risk. Additionally, we could also learn how to read coordinates to go to the correct stop, by making sure we follow the steps and also to know where we are right now. Secondly, we would probably need a device, or a mobile to know whats the destination, and where we have to go to find the box. Lastly, I think that they made up geocaching because, some people love being outdoors and are really adventurous. With this in mind, the people that do this can have a chance to have fun and be active with family members, friends, or even realtives. Above all, that is what geocaching is. What do you think?

@LUYSA Soccor Player #10, it doesn't really matter if you post late at that time, late would be around 10PM or further so no need to worry. I really liked your post on what you think you will learn through out your geocaching adventure, but you don't just learn those things those are the basics at geocaching. The real things you'll learn is when you do it like being aware of your surroundings or coming prepared and keeping an eye out for the caches. There are just so many that I can't even explain.

When you geocach you can learn how to do outdoor this like climbing trees. Technology that helps you geocach is phones, clothes for reaching hard containers and a compass. I think people set up geocaching locations because they want to have fun and get people to spend more time outdoors. It's interesting because you never know what you need to do and what you will find.

I think that we are learning tons of different skills by geocaching like following coordinates, reading instuctions and following them properly, and last but not least having FUN! Technology is a big part of geocaching because without it you wouldn't be able to go geocaching. Some types of technology that helps you geocache are a GPS, IPhone/IPad/IPod, or a compass because that kind of counts as technology. I think that so many people set up geocaching spots because they are just so active and they want to be part of an adventure and not only do you get free things but you get an amazing adventure that you can't get anywhere else. And it is so interesting for people because each geocache box is so different and unique from the last.

When geocaching so skills you will learn is how to follow direction and coordinates. The technology that will help you is a GPS or compass with the coordinates. I think a lot of people let up and do geocaching that get board and want something to do also it keeps you active and is fun to do.

Some skills I've been learning from geocaching is how to read coordinates, for example how many degrees North and South. A GPS helps you geocache because it tells you the coordinates you are going so you can find the geocache. I think people like geocaching because it is like treasure haunting and it gives them a rush. Also some people like it because they get to see nature and that kind of stuff.
