Tuesday: Engaged Learners and The Literary Elements

Your road to digital and learning fluency continued today. You learned the ins and outs of COMMUNICATION and COLLABORATION via Google Drive/Docs. Show your parents how this works. In addition to this, you learned how important feedback is (receiving and giving) in the learning process. We have covered 4 components of Assessment For Learning (AFL) and will continue to learn more about this over the next few weeks. Parents, I have provided a link here so you can see a snapshot of what AFL is and how it can help your son/daughter learn.

1.) POST A RESPONSE: Today you learned about different literary elements. You learned about plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting. "It was mad exciting!" Click here to see a summary of each of them.
a.) Write about the setting of the novel (WONDER)
b.) Write about 2 of the characters.
- Include as much detail as possible for both (a) and (b). Feel free to use your notes from class today. Also, don't forget about the blogging process - post, give/receive feedback, revise.

2.) FIELD TRIP FORMS: Have your parents fill these out for tomorrow and bring your $10. Ask your parents to come along! :) Also, please return any outstanding forms that you have yet to hand in.

3.) Grade 6 Math - Pg 76 #2, #3, #4, #6a #6d
Grade 7 Math - Any assignments that were given in your math class.

When Via was talking to August about how was school today in his bedroom. I learned that August has more personality to him. I think Via is a protective sister to August because he is different than others.

@ The Overseeker - It was his mother who was standing outside of Auggie's door. In my opinion, she was checking to make sure he was sleeping okay. Parents can me very protective of their children and always want to make sure they are safe and out of harms way.

SUGGESTIONS: I recommend revising your original post by doing the following:
1.) Re-read the question on the blog.
2.) Make sure you capitalize the first word of every sentence.
3.) Don't forget to use commas and periods.

Hi The Overseeker, I think that you need to put in a little more detail to the characters. Also, you should capitalize your i's and the first letter of the sentence. :)

The setting in wonder?
If so, I think the setting was the High school for Via, and the Subway to because she went on it most of the time. For August, the setting took place in his elementary school (or middle school, I forget) where there were many characters such as-
Auggie himself, Jullian, Summer,Jack, and Via.
Firstly, August is a boy who was born with a deformed face. He is stared at a lot, and doesn't have much self confidence when going to school. He also doesn't interact with many people because they are just to scared to come near him... except for Summer. Secondly, Summer is a really nice girl that goes to Auggies school and she immediately wanted to get to know him. Obviously, she is not one of "those" people who would just come out and say it, "What's wrong with your face?". Thirdly, Via is Auggies older sister who attends a high school pretty far away from her house. She is forgotten a lot because of Auggie. Some times, she doesn't even feel she exists. Lastly, Jullian is a extremely rude boy who goes to Auggies school. He is not a very good friend and is really mean to Auggie.

:D (I didn't write down where the setting took place because I was to busy writing connections and explaining the characters, so that is most of the settings I remember).

Plot- It is like action that happens in the story.

Character- Tells itself. The animals, the humans or the make believe living things the author makes.

Conflict- Is basically the "Situation" of the story. Example~ Auggie and his deformity.

Theme- The words of wisdom the story is trying to send out. I think what this story is trying to send out is don't judge a book by its cover.

Setting- Where the story takes place.

-Extra-

Protagonist- Is the "Sun" of the solar system. In this case, Auggie is the Sun of the story.

Antagonist- Is the person who is the "Enemy" of the story. In this case, Jullian is the enemy of the story.

Hi Sandy! I think you did a good job and all, although you could work on a few things. Firstly, you should put “too” instead of “to” in your first sentence because “to” means, “to F.B.I., or lets go to the mall”. Secondly, you should pay attention to spelling, grammar, capitals, punctuation, etc. For example, “Subway” isn’t capitalized unless you are talking about the fast food place. Also, make sure you use punctuation like commas when needed, although you need to make sure you use them correctly. Thirdly, you should keep your setting, (time and place) in the same order. What I mean by that is, you need to say “Was” if you said it before. Don’t randomly say “Is”, so basically keep it past tense if you start with it being past tense. Lastly, can you think of any more characters?

a.) I think the setting in Wonder has a very weird feeling because everyone would be awkward. Staying up late would be hard to stay up because you would want to go to sleep.

b.) 1.Via (or Olivia) is very cautious about not being the center of attention, she is also very weird around her friends now that they have changed.

2. Auggie (or August) is independent and is very self centered even though he may not like it, he also is a Star Wars fanboy who almost knows everything about it.

Hi Slender Man! I like how you organized your information so it is easy to read, although I have a few suggestions for you. Firstly, I am not sure what you are talking about in your first 2 sentences in section “a”. Try to clarify what you mean when you revise it. Secondly, do you think you can add who Via’s friends (who have now changed) are, meaning their names. Thirdly, add more details about the characters if you can. Lastly, try to add more Characteristics about how Auggie looks like. For example, does he look like a normal 10 year-old boy?

The setting in wonder is in the middle school for Auggie, and for Via it is the subway. The main characters are Via, Auggie, Jullian ,Summer, and Jack. Auggie, he is a kid that got a deformed face when he was born. He is very nice to others but to him the only nice people are his friends. Via is Auggies sister, she goes to High school far away. Last but not least there is Jullian he is a bad and rude boy he is rude to every one especially Auggie.

I thnk the setting in the book wonder is Subway, Highschool and the middle shcool which August goes to. The Subway because Via and her dad use it and the High school because Via goes to High school lastly, the middle school wich August attents to.

There is 6 main characters August, Via, Summer, Jack, Jullian and August and Via's mom.

First August is a 10 year old boy with a deformed face he almost all the time keeps his head down in school and is very shy most of the time he gets judeged because he has a deformed face but has a great peronallty inside.Secondly, Via is August sister and is in high school and most of th time she feels left out because all the attenton is on Auggie. Thirdly, Summer is Auggies friend that she does not mined that Auggies face is deformed. Fourthly, Jack is August other friend that I think he is trying to make August turn into a bad person but he is usually nice to Auggie. Fifly, Jullian is a really mean person to Auggie who makes fun of Auggie and calls him names. Lastly, Auggies and Via mom she mainly cares about august and rarely gives attention to Via.

So far I think that the three main settings are the middle school, the high school and Augusts house.The reasons I think this is because the book started off with Auggie starting middle school. Then it went to Via starting high school and recently its been taking place in Auggies house.
The first character i'm going to talk about is Auggie (August.) He is the main character. Heis ten years old and was born with a face disorder. He seems like a more shy scared kid because of the way he looks. He has trouble making friends beause of the way he looks.
The second character is Via. She is Auggies older sister. She is always looking out for August. So far she seems like a smarter person and not as shy as auggie. She has more friends than August.

In the beginning, the setting of this book is the school, my characters are August and August's mother. Let me go deep onto that now...

Firstly, the place where the book takes place most is called "the setting". In the book Wonder, the setting for August is in his elemantary school. The elemantary school is the setting because it's August (protaganus) first school year. The setting for Via's is her high school. It is also her first time in a high school.

Secondly, the characters I chose for this part of the paragraph, are August and the mother of August. August's face is NOT such a WOOH! in his life. His DNA got messed up when he was born. He is very friendly and people make fun of him a lot. This is his first school year...how will it end?? August's mom? Not so bad just like an ordinary parent doing ordinary things. When she's mad, she's mad. So I think you should not mess with her.

1.a) The main character, Auggie, is in grade 6 and going to his first year in middle school in a big town. He can walk to school, but he gets picked up sometimes.

1.b) Auggie is shy because of his facial deformity. The dog, Cookie comforts him by sitting on the bed with him. The principal, Mr Tushie, had 2 kids come in early to show Auggie around.

a) The main setting is the school because that's Auggies first year, also the main setting for via is also school, but high-school so for her that is pretty different.

b)I am starting off with August, August is 10 years old and has his DNA messed up and now has a face disorder he is nice but gets made fun of a lot so that is what i think what mainly puts him down, speaking of down he mainly keeps his head down in school and is mainly shy.

Secondly Via, Via is a fifteen year old girl and is just starting highschool she is very protective to August and sometimes just wants more attention!.

A.) The setting of the book Wonder takes place in numeral places. For example, Auggie and Via, which are two characters that I will explain later live in New York. The settings are mainly either at Auggie's, or Via's school, or at their home. Some other place the setting in the book has been on the subway.

B.) The main character August ( nickname is Auggie ) is a 10 year old boy with a deformed face. One little mishap in his DNA caused it. People say he looks like E.T. , but he just wants to be treated the same as everyone else. Because of that, he has been home schooled for his whole life and has never been to a school. He has had plenty of surgeries to fix his face and his mouth. Auggie says he looks like a tortoise when he eats. Auggie's sister Olivia ( nickname Via ), is a nice, caring 15 year old and loves to play with August. She really cares about Auggie but she wants a little more attention since everybody is always looking out for August but not her. She said that August is the Sun and her and her family are planets.

The main setting is Auggies school and home because the book mostly takes place in those two places.

Auggies is 10 years old , in grade 5. His DNA was failed when he was born.
Via is Auggies sister , Via is 15 and in highschool , sometimes she doesn't get that much attention because Of Auggie.

Settings ~ I think that the main setting for Via was at high school, also for August (Auggie) ~ The main setting was school.

B~ Im gonna talk about August well August is a 10 year old boy who is deformed in the face and people make fun of him, In one of the chapters of Wonder when August first stepped into the class NO one would sit beside him and when August wasn't looking they would all stare at him in mean ways and then when August looked behind them they all put there heads down like nothing ever happened. And he has a really nice friend named Summer she is the only one who likes august the way he is also, Sometimes people would make rude comments infront of his face so he gets put down alot.

Also ~ August has a sister named Via she is 15 years old but she doesn't get as much attention as august does she always feels left out. But she is still there for her brother August no matter what.

A.) I think the setting in that chapter took place in the school because this is Auggie's (August's) first year, like come on everyone would like to tell their friends and family how their first day of school was.

B.) In my opinion Via and August are the two main characters. Lets start off by telling you a little bit about august, he is very nice and
kind hearted but people judge him by his cover because he has a deformed face but he is a really nice kid. Just like they say don't judge a book by it's cover. And now Via, she is very thoughtful towards her brother and very protective of him. But her friends have changed not in a good way but not in a bad way but in a different way?

Setting: the school
Auggie's middle school has two floors, a cafeteria and lots of kids everywhere. It's pretty close to his home and doesn't yet feel good to Auggie. I predict that soon, or maybe at the end of this book, that August will finally feel at home.
Character #1: Auggie
August, the main character of this book, is nice, friendly, has a sister named Via and- his face is disfigured. his eyes are too low, he has a cleft palette, his mouth can't smile and he can hardly hear. He and everyone in his family are defined by it.
Character #2: Via
August has a fifteen year old sister named Via. She goes to high school, has two friends named Miranda and Ella and has always protected August more than anyone else in the family. she sometimes feels like August gets all the attention but doesn't complain or react at all.

Character #1: Auggie
Auggie is the main character in the book, he is nice and he has a sister named Via and he has a genetic disability on his face and he has a cleft pallet the book says that when he's eating sometimes he looks like a tortoise.

Character #2: Auggies Mom
She is a very kind person who like to ask questions and cares about Auggie more than anything else in the world

A.) There were a few places in the book that took place in the novel (Wonder). First of all one of the places was Augie's elementary school. At the point where the setting was his elementary school, Julian Charlotte and Jack were showing him around the school. Another setting was the subway. In the book Via was in the subway for a majority of the time. I also remember that there was a part in the book where Via was at her high school with her best friends. I think that was the main settings in the book, well the parts we have covered!

B.) There are a few characters in the book: Augie, Via, Miranda, Ella, Summer, (There are more characters but these are the ones I remember)
- Augie is a ten year old boy that was born with a deformed face. He has never gone to school before, but has just started to go to a new school. Alot of people look at him, which he's not to happy about. He has this special braid that he grew but in a part of the book he cut it.

- Via is fifteen and is in high school. She really cares for her brother and sticks up for him. Sometimes she feels that her parents particularly her mom doesn't care about her. She understands that her mom needs to be there but she thinks that she cares for him too much.

- Miranda is one of Via's friends. She is very "over the top" and care alot about Augie.

- Ella is another one of Via's friends and in the book it mentioned that she has changed her image too.

- Summer is a very nice girl that is friends with Augie.

In the story Wonder the setting was in Via's high school with her best friends. It also takes place in Auggie's house with all his family.

Some of the new characters were Maranda and Ella, Maranda is always the most sweetest to Auggie but over the summer she has become more of a jerk and her and Ella have made a secret friendship over the summer,
