VISIBLE THINKING AND READING STRATEGIES

11/18/2022

Today, students worked on their 5th reading strategy. More specifically, they worked on visualizations. This was modelled on the board for them and then the students had independent work time to complete their activities. I was so impressed with everyone's ideas they wrote down. Unbelievable work was produced by the students today! Even students who often struggle to write were able to achieve a great deal of success and all students were able to respond to feedback during their work time.
IMPORTANT:
1.) ART: DUE TUESDAY
2.) FIELD TRIP FORMS: Please return asap.

LEARNING PLANNER:
1.) READING:

30 minutes per day and log your reading strategy.
Students, you are now required to log your use of one reading strategy each time you read. Remember. Try to use a different one each time.
EXAMPLE: Today I set a purpose to make at least one connection. A connection that I made was to today's poem. It reminded me of when Mr. Hong gives me support and guidance when I need it! He always has a goofy smile on his face and is always so excited to help me learn!
Digital copy of the reading log will be uploaded this weekend.

2.) MATH: Complete page 2 of your booklet (adding/subtracting whole numbers and fractions)

3.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete visible thinking with your big idea.
Complete your graphic organizer.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain how to complete my visible thinking activities for Novel Approach activities!
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) PARAGRAPH FORMAT: intro/body/ conclusion.
2.) GIVENS: Pay close attention to your spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, etc.
3.) INTRO: Make it as exciting and engaging as possible.
4.) BODY: Include at least 2-3 things with details that you would do when completing visible thinking. Provide details!
5.) CONCLUSION: Tie up your paragraph smoothly.
6.) PEER FEEDBACK/SELF-ASSESSMENT: Give 1 student 2 things to improve on based on the above criteria.
7.) REVISED VERSION: Based on the feedback you receive or the self-assessment you complete, post a revised version as a reply to your original post.

"I want you to 'puke' out your visible thinking." Mr. Hong says. Apparently, it has nothing to do with actual puke. Instead, it has to do with something called 'visible thinking'. When doing visible thinking, you should include reading strategies, thoughts, and ideas. If you have a thought you want to include, write it down --- regardless of how unorganized and messy it is. Mr. Hong wants to know all of your opinions, thoughts, ideas, and reading strategies you have. In conclusion, using visible thinking can help you understand poems, songs and books better.

“I want you to ‘puke out’ your visible thinking”, Mr. Hong says. Apparently, that phrase does not involve actual puke. Instead, that term has to do with showing your thinking. That thinking includes thoughts, ideas, and reading strategies. Visible thinking can also help you have a better understanding of a story, song lyrics, etc. As you read, and you come across something interesting, write down a thought if you have one — regardless of how unorganized and minor your thoughts are. Believe it or not, Mr. Hong actually wants it to be messy and unorganized. He wants to know what’s going on in your mind and how do you react to the story. In conclusion, using visible thinking is really beneficial for reading.

Here are my steps on how to complete my visible thinking activities. First, I would set a purpose. Usually my first purpose would be to know what the writing is about. Then, I would start reading the writing and making a couple of notes and question. If there was any words that I didn't know of, I would look it up immediately. Afterward, I would read it again, and making a new purpose, like "making inferences". This time you could puke everything that you think of on the paper. Then after that you should be able to get the big idea. That is my way to do it, what is yours?

do you know what visible thinking is it is a way of showing thoughts about writing and you show youe thinking by writing it down if you think a thought abut the riting you write it in. you rite manythings down like read stratigies, question, idea or even big idea your writ even if it is messy you rite it in because mr hong wants to see all your thinking and what you think.

Do you know what "visible thinking" is? If you don't, you're going to be in trouble because you weren't focusing in class. Visible thinking is a way of showing thoughts about a piece of writing, and you show your thinking by writing it down on the paper. If have a thought about the writing you write it in. You write many things down on the paper like reading strategies, questions, ideas or even the big idea. Even if your writing is messy or your page is full, you still write in it because Mr. Hong wants to see all your thinking and what you think. That is why it used to be called "messy thinking". Also, Mr. Hong wants you to PUKE out your thoughts, not literally but figuratively. That is how you should complete your visible thinking.

Have you ever heard of the term “visible thinking?” If not it’s basically just visualizing and putting it on paper, or as Mr. Hong says it… Puke your thinking onto your paper.

Now, how do you do visible thinking? Well this is what I have been learning in class so let me explain.
First you should set a purpose or two. Then all you really have to do is use your reading strategies like asking questions, making inferences, monitoring comprehension and visualizing.

Now that you know or got more information on what visible thinking is you should be able to do the visible thinking activities very well. :)

Have you heard of the term “visible thinking”? Well, if not it’s basically just vomiting your thoughts onto your paper.

Now, how exactly do you do visible thinking? Well, in class we were told that the first thing you want to do is set a purpose or 2, and then from there it’s using your reading strategies like asking questions, making inferences, visualizing, monitoring comprehension and accessing background knowledge.

Now that you hopefully know or understand more about visible thinking I guarantee that you will know how to do the visible thinking activities and the graphic organizer!

What is visible thinking? Visible thinking is when you read something and you imagine it. For example, the sentence, that guys forehead is so big its bigger then his both his hands. You imagine and guy with a big forehead. Thats visible thinking.

Visible thinking is when you read something and you kind of say your thoughts.there are some step 1 step is ti set purposes example purpose 1 practice my reading strategy's purpose 2 .... 2 step is to use reading strategies 3 step is to ask questions. there are more than 3 steps but those are kind of the basic ones.

Visible thinking is something where you puke all your ideas on to your papers well that what Mr. Hong says at least, visible thinking is where you visualize what the moment so for example let's say a little boy was swinging in the playground and laughing while his mom or dad pushes him can you visualize that? Normally, you puke when you're sick. No one wants to be sick, right? Well.... Mr. Hong doesn't want us to be sick, but he wants us to "puke our ideas and thoughts out onto the piece of paper". Not literally though, he wants us to write out all of our thoughts, ideas, questions etc onto the paper no matter how messy it may be. Writing out all that would help us comprehend and deeply understand the poem. When I do my visible thinking, the first thing I do is to set a purpose. Why do you want to read this paragraph/ poem? To get a feel? To obtain information? After that, I start reading the writing and write down all my notes, ideas, questions etc. Words that I don't know, I would search it up in the dictionary and write it down. Then, I would keep re-reading the piece of writing, making inferences and other ideas etc. AKA puking on the paper. Finally, based on your notes, thinking, and inferences, I would create a "Big Idea". The big idea is what the writing is all about. Everyone has different big ideas. To comprehend a piece of writing and find the big idea, use the steps above and puke out your thinking!

Anyways, why is visible thinking so important? Visible thinking is a process that is exactly how it sounds - making your thinking visible. Basically, writing down everything that your mind thinks of; regardless of if you're looking at a picture, reading a short piece of text like song lyrics or a poem, or even reading a whole novel. You can start by writing down your purpose(s). Some examples of purposes are, "to get a feel," "for pleasure," or "to find a big idea". You could also say that your purpose is to ask questions, make connections, or make visualizations. Next, read through the text (look at the picture, whatever you're doing visible thinking for) and write down any questions, thoughts, or comments that you have along the way. Don't worry about it being messy - that's the whole point of visible thinking! You can always organize it using a graphic organizer later. Also, write down any reading strategies that you used, such as making connections, monitoring comprehension, visualizing, or making inferences.

As you read the text and write things down, you should be starting to form a big idea in your head. The big idea of something is what you think it is all about. Once you think you've written down about everything you've thought of, write down your big idea. Congratulations! You've officially learned how to successfully complete visible thinking activities!

What is visible thinking? I want you to think of it as solving a math question with apples. You imagine you have four apples, and you take away two, so now you have two. This isn't math class though, visible thinking in writing helps you learn better.

You understand what visible thinking is, but how do you use it? Well, there are many ways to explain but just think of it as your brain. What do YOU think when you read ex; a poem. You can write freely and just spit out everything that's in your mind. Does it remind you of something? Do you have a connection? Ask questions! Make inferences! Sometimes, you might not know what a word means. Simple solution, look it up in the dictionary! You can always use dictionaries to define meanings that you don't understand. Another thing that helps is to set purposes. Why are you reading it? What are you trying to do? I like to use 2-3 purposes in my visible thinking, but it varies depending on you.

Hopefully, this helps you. It's totally okay to not get it at first. You may only write a few questions and make some connections at first, but after doing this frequently, you'll be able to fill up the whole page with words!

What's the meaning of visible thinking? No, it's not literally when somebody can visually see your thinking, it's more like you puking out your thinking, but also not literally. Visible thinking in writing is where you write down your thinking process. Unsure how? This is my step by step procedure for visible thinking! First, get yourself a poem or paragraph. Read it over once and write down your purpose. Why are you reading it? What are you trying to figure out? Next, re-read it and just start puking out your thinking. I like to ask questions at first, then make connections and make inferences. I use reading strategies such as monitoring and comprehension, setting purposes, and also the one I'm talking about today! Visible thinking. Don't stop thinking when you're stuck, just re-read and keep repeating until you find something you can write about. If you need to find the definition of a word, use a dictionary. Don't forget to write your other purposes.

Don't worry, not everybody is a pro first try. You may only write down a few questions and connections at first, but it's guaranteed you'll be filling up the whole page in no time!

(ignore the fact that I totally forgot about this please oh my god..)

When you hear the term visual thinking what comes to mind? When I first heard that I thought of imagining rainbows and unicorns but it was a bit different from my imaginary world..

Starting off, what is visual thinking? And how can we improve it? First of all, visual thinking isn't necessarily drawing. It's about having a visual in your head and imagining what a certain narrative may have meant.
Using your visual thinking, you can make alot of questions, ideas, connections, and possibly answers!
I use visual thinking when I do mental math. I break down the numbers in my head and make out the answer! But is it not visual thinking when you write it down? It is still technically visual thinking but your writing it down to show your work. Overall I think this is a great strategy to not forget any key points plus you can look it over.

I hope you learnt something from this paragraph. Next time you can show me how to visually think by sharing your own method.

What is visible thinking? How is visible thinking useful? These are just some questions I once had before today's lesson. In class we did independent work time with visible thinking, learning about visualization and how to incorporate it into your visible thinking.

So what is visible thinking? visible thinking is when you puke out your thoughts onto your paper, it's when you show all your thoughts. For example, if you have a poem and you're trying to understand what the poem means, you would write down your thoughts leading to your conclusion or big idea. It's sort of like showing your work in math, but in novel approach. Visible thinking is useful because if you are trying to use a reading strategy to understand a text, visible thinking allows you to record your thoughts to come up with a Big idea/conclusion.

Overall, Visible thinking is very useful and and I suggest you learn if you haven't done so.
