Today, students worked on their visible thinking for 'When I was 8'. In addition to this, they responded directly to the feedback given to them on their papers. Later, they completed some assessment work on FreshGrade and uploaded their most recent Science quizzes and posted learning reflections. They also posted some ongoing POP ART that they have been working on. In the afternoon, students learned about electromagnetism and built their background knowledge in preparation for tomorrow's inquiry.
IMPORTANT:

Return Churchill application forms ASAP!

LEARNING:
1.) ART: Complete one more draft (coloured). You should have at least 3 for tomorrow.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH: Visible thinking must be completed for tomorrow. Students who do not have this completed tomorrow will be given homework alerts to have signed by their parents.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

If the entire class completes the criteria below, you will have a PAR holiday for the entire week.
We have been reading 'THE BRIDGE HOME' in class for a few weeks now and have learned a lot about the journey that two children face after they have left their home because of the abuse they faced.
Write a paragraph explaining what you would do to survive if you had to live on the streets of Vancouver. How would you survive? Where would you sleep? Where would you get food? Where would you get money? Could you survive? (These are just some questions to guide your writing)

Every now and then, you walk by a homeless person, living on the streets. And you might feel bad for them. But maybe you would more if you were put in their shoes. Imagine living on the streets, no home, no good food, nothing. But you still would have to find a way to survive. So how would you survive? Firstly, for my living situation, I would probably sleep/beg somewhere where people walk by me, like somewhere Downtown, but still somewhere where I have shelter, that's not out in the open. And it would have to be somewhere near a restaurant, so that I would be able to eat their scraps if I couldn't pay for food. That's basically all I need to do to survive, but I also would like to get money so every once in a while I would be a able to buy my own meal. I think I could just beg for money, I heard that it makes more money than working at McDonalds. Or I could mug people, but that's illegal so I shouldn't do that. Begging would work for me. Lots of people actually have to live like this, think of the characters in 'A Bridge Home'. But not all of them survive. If you were put in their situation, could you survive?

Making a living can be very challenging depending on what path you decide to take. It can be difficult because you have to support yourself and your family (If you decide to start one) with food, water, shelter, education and other necessities. Many people are fortunate as they are able to have these things; but what if you don't have these things? What if you don't come from a family that can support you like this? If you can not find a way to get these things, you will not be able to survive. To summarize, you will die. After all, living on the streets is not a simple thing to do. If you want to solve things on the side of the law, you need to make a living by finding a job. Though this will prove to be very difficult if you do not have any education or experience. Overall, not many people are willing to hire employers who will not benefit their business. Moreover, if finding a job proves to be successful for you, you need to find a way to split your earnings into food, water, shelter and education. By doing this, your options for work and better living may have a wider range. Additionally, if I were to live on the streets, firstly, I would find a place stay at so that I could use my time wisely and find a job the next day. Though, I must find a shelter that can stay strong and will not collapse, it also has to protect me from rain to prevent getting sick. Secondly, if I were able to find a job with the learning experience I have now, I will spend my first salary on food and clean water. Though, if I am not able to find a job, I will do as the characters in 'The Bridge Home' does; I will try to look for worthy scraps and attempt to sell them as some people throw out stuff that could actually be worth a lot of money. In conclusion, I believe I could survive if I lived on the streets and were more motivated to work and move. Though, as I am already used to living in home which can provide me with such needs and necessities, I am extremely grateful. I am able to live care-free and happily here. With this in mind, there are still many people who do not have what we do, so we must be grateful and cherish those who support us and provide us with our needs.

Our new book in read aloud is call “The bridge home”. It’s talking about two children face after they have left their home because of the abuse they faced. If I’m Rukku and Viji. I must be very scare because maybe I will very hungry and tired even starve to death☹. We can’t survive without any money. But Rukku and Viji don’t have any money and food after they leave their home. If I’m Rukku, I will quickly try to ask someone to help me or give me some food. But maybe they will think you just try to fraud the money from them. So I can’t make sure they will give the money or any food to you. The only method is to find the police or government to help you. There are my opinions, I think we are very lucky. We have a warm family. We have enough food and water to make us full. It’s all because our parent. They work very hard and try to give us the best thing. They are not like Rukku and Viji’ parent. Thank for reading!!!

Poverty has happened all around the world, even in places that seem really rich. People struggle so hard to survive where all we do is watch. People don’t have anything to eat, while we waste what we eat just because we are ‘full’. Poverty is something that everyone should help on. If i ended up being homeless one day, I would try to find a labor job, u wouldn’t sleep and would work overnight. I would buy 6 slices of pizza a day (25$) and would make money from dancing on the street. My job could be a fast food place. I would continuously work at a fast food place until I can find a job at a fine restaurant. My mom always told me to start small, she used to wash dishes, then she got promoted to cook, then she got promoted to cashier and got to start working with the bank before the age of 20. And if I do get sleepy, I would sleep sitting up so I don’t look like I’m homeless. Not saying it’s bad or anything. I would also go to church a lot because church has a great community and are very welcoming. I would get some friends to talk with and save up for a apartment. When I get a apartment, l will sleep there. I won’t buy unnecessarily furniture and would soon get a phone. I would start a company on Amazon and start to live my life. I know this isn’t easy, but with time and skill, I believe this is achievable for me!

There are many things we take for granted here in Vancouver, in our daily lives, like clean water, shelter, and easy food. However, these things do not come to everyone with so little effort. For example, a bottle of water is basically nothing to us, while to poor families in India, say, it could be the equivalent of treasure. If I lost my hime, and my parents, my life would change significantly. I would not have all the privileges I have now, and it would be a lot harder to survive. One thing I would have to find for myself is a place to sleep. I could try to find someone who would be willing to take me in, and that might solve all my other problems too. However, it would be unlikely that I find someone like that. Because of this, I would probably sleep on a bench, or in the undercover area at a school or building. The next issue I would be facing is food. I would probably have to beg on the streets for money, or ask people if they have anything they're not going to finish. I certainly wouldn't get much, but hopefully enough to survive. I would probably do the same for water as I would for food. Overall, when I really think about it, it would be hard to survive without things I take for granted right now. We should be a little more grateful for these things, and it might just make us a little happier with what we have.

Streets of Vancouver! What would it be like to live on the streets of Vancouver? I can already imagine it would be hard. from the book we know that India has mounds of garbage but here in Canada we don't.
Here in Canada you can't find abandon shelters... But what would I do?
well there is two ways...
Way one: Step one: find the finest clothing I can and immediately look for a fast food restaurant and hopefully find a job. use as little money on food... Step two: Save up for any device that can support popular free video games. Grow a you tube channel to hopefully make more money. I would use the fast food restaurant wi-fi. That would hopefully start making money someday plus its free!

What will you do if you had no home, no money and was living on the streets? In my case, I would go to a place where it is close to a pond or lake so I could drink water or bathe in it and sleep on the grass with cardboard on it. I will get money by wiping peoples' shoes or selling something and buy food from convenience stores because they are cheap. By using these methods I will surely survive if I was homeless and some of the methods could be also used when you are stranded or lost. What would you do to survive this situation?

Imagine what life would be like if you were homeless? The book that we are reading in class is called "The bridge home" it's about two kids that are abused by their father, they soon escape their home and find shelter under a bridge and friend two boys who are also homeless. The people in India have less privileges than Canada because they are poorer and water is extremely difficult to get, while in Canada we take it for granted. If I was in a homeless persons shoes/feet (because they might not have shoes) I would definitely look for shelter (under a tree, on a bench, or under a undercover place somewhere outside a store, etc.) because its one of the most important things that you need to survive, after that food is the next thing i'll need or I would starve, water would be more easier to get. Money is another thing that I would need but it would be better to get food or water because the money might not be enough to buy food or water. Overall, even though we take things for granted, we should be thankful for the things we have (shelter, food, water, a bed to sleep in, and money so we can get things ourself, especially education so it would be hard to live if we didn't

Poverty happens everywhere and we can't do much to help. Clean water is difficult for most people in poverty to find, and if I needed to find some shelter and nourishment I would find myself a place to sleep by finding a place that would shelter me from rain like an undercover area. Secondly, I would find plastic bottles and locate a recycling facility like Vancouver Zero Waste Centre and recycle the bottles for money. In conclusion, we take many things for granted and without them, life would be difficult to survive. We should recognize and appreciate these sorts of things more.

Roen, child support is to divide the costs associated with raising a child or children between the parents. Unless the parents agree on a different arrangement, child support is usually paid in the form of regular payments by one parent to the other to help support the child's basic needs. Not the same thing as orphanages ;-;

If I were to be put out on the streets I would not last long. but since I am only 12 years old I would go to child services center, it is the only reasonable thing to do. but let's assume that I can't do that. I would be found in public warm places. this would protect me from the cold and people. and I would sleep on the subway. I would make a website on a public computer offering cleaning serves such as squeegeeing. I would go to a public computer every day and see If I got any requests. I would also put up posters from my serves. Hopefully this would get me enough money food. I would stay away from illegal stuff for the obvious reasons. but I do not think I would survive without the help of others. good thing that being abandoned is not a realistic outcome. as I would got older I would get a job that paid by the hour. I would redo school, do an online curriculum and hopefully achieve success.

Surviving on the streets is not easy unless you know what to do.
If I was on the streets, I would make a plan. To survive, I would find or make shelter, find or make food, resell anything that could be used such as jewelry and phones, sleep in my shelter. The shelter could be made out of tarps, chairs, fabric, and any other useful stuff. I would try to find food that is good to eat or buy food. Stealing food is easier but it is also risky. I could make something or steal something that people would want to buy. This would be easier if I was in a less rich city because there would be more people that would want to buy random stuff that I could sell. In conclusion, living alone in big cities on the streets is not easy. But if you have a plan, then it would be easier.

In our current lives, we all are fortunate enough have food, water, and other nessicities that we need in our daily life.There are some that aren't as fortunate and lucky as us, I will be telling you about what I would do if I were homeless. I would personally just get a job that I can do and live in a homeless shelter saving up for enough to rent an apartment or some form of shelter. A large percentage of people who are homeless now are either not capable of working or they don't want to. So if I become homeless, I would just wait until I can be old enough to get a job. In that few years where I am not old enough to work, I can mow someone's lawn or do chores for someone in order to get pocket money for food, This is what I would personally do.

I felt unseen as people walked past me not caring even to look. All the busyness of their lives but at least they know they have a home to go back to. I looked down at my few dollars and the filthy, grazed hands that held it. I had been begging because I was so desperate. All of a sudden it was late in the afternoon so I started off scavenging for food. For me, all I receive would become so precious, although for some it would be considered worthless. I waited outside of restaurants so maybe when they throw out the extra food I could have a little. Often the answer was no, though I would not loose hope. Luckily I had made just enough for a small meal, but as I walked I noticed a small cup of something on someones porch. Looking as though they had gone out and forgotten to drink it. Holding it made me feel so warm and happy and soon enough I had drank half the cup. I panicked! Guilt overflowed me. So I placed the money I had made on the small table and snatched the cup. I had an idea. I quickly walked down the dark street and then saw a little girl sitting on the curb shivering. Children should not have to go through this. I knew she would benefit from the hot chocolate more than I would even if I did miss it. painfully I walked down the streets for hours. Not being able to handle the cold anymore and I was to tired to carry on, I collapsed. I lay there with no regrets because I felt a little warmer. Feeling like if I was not supposed to be saved then I could help save others.

Do you think you would survive if you lived on the streets of Vancouver? Many people have to live by this question everyday, not everyone is as privileged as us. Not everyone has a roof over their heads, enough food, and a safe ecosystem surrounding us. This certainly isn’t a simple question, it contains lots of thinking and survival strategies because it is a life or death situation. Since I am still young and i don’t have much experience living in the outdoors alone with no source of shelter or food. First, I would probably live in a park with trees and a playground area. Basically a place that’s open and grassy to sleep, and a place with not many people. Secondly, I would steal food and random things on the streets because although stealing is a risk, I am willing to take that risk because I probably wouldn’t get anywhere if I didn’t take risks. If I managed to steal any accessories, I would sell them for money and if I managed to steal any food, I would definitely eat them and save them for later. I could also sign myself up for any services/jobs on the computers in the public libraries. I’ve seen many volunteer working centres before and they don’t seem to pay much but it’s better than nothing. People on the streets would look down at you and you would face lots of rejection and ignorance from them, and very few would actually stop to help you. These strategies are the bear minimum for survival on the streets and most likely, you wouldn’t last long and die from things such as starvation, diseases, harsh weather conditions, depression, mental disorders, etc. Overall, I am very thankful that I have enough to eat, a roof over my head, and a family. Therefore I am glad these aren’t struggles that I have to deal with in my daily life.

In our class, inferring that we all live normal lives, we all take food, water and shelter for granted, not realizing how valuable those resources are. We don't appreciate enough how fortunate we are to have all the basic necessities for a sustainable and healthy life provided by our parents. If I was homeless, I would first try to find a source of freshwater. Here in Vancouver, we have many water fountains that are available to use, but due to the ongoing virus, many if not all the water fountains have been closed. So if I was homeless in this time, I would scavenge for a bucket to collect freshwater from the rain since here in Vancouver, it rains a lot. Another necessity that we have to worry about is food. To find food in Vancouver, I would have to dumpster dive into the dumpsters of supermarkets since they throw out a lot of food that will expire very soon and still throw it away. Markets also throw out unappealing looking fruits that are perfectly fine although markets in Vancouver are pretty rare to come by. Both of those can get you an abundant amount of food that are sustainable. In order to get money, I could dumpster dive for items like jewelry or watches to sell to pawn shops to make a small fortune, anything works really. With the money, I would buy an item that looks expensive and try to flip the item. Alternatively, I could buy a pack of candies that contain 30 candies and cost $1 a bag. I can try to sell each candy for a dime each in order to get a total of $3 which creates $2 in profit. That would be my personal survival guide to how to survive homeless in Vancouver, I hope you can remember this information to maybe use in emergency situations. Let's just hope you won't ever use this information though.

First, it sounds like you’re preparing for the zombie apocalypse I shall collect a water collector so I will not be infected with this fatal virus.

2nd, Your ways of gathering money are not plausible, what are the chances you find jewellery in the dumpster. Also if a homeless child were to come up to you. And say “hey kid wanna buy some candy” what would you do say yes stranger I would love to take your candy?
, Or runaway us as you can?

Water fountains are closed due to the virus. Finding items like jewelry in dumpsters are just an example, it was including but not limited to. For your candy complain, I can see your concern and agree with you, but this is only 1 of the things you can do that I listed, this was just an idea. Thank you for the feedback!

Try to stay off contractions such as don't, can't, could've, would've, etc. Try to stay formal when possible and use the root words: do not, can not, could have, would have, etc.

Have you ever seen a homeless person and not acknowledged their existence? I'm fairly sure we have all done that. They make you uncomfortable, right? Yeah, I agree. For me, this is because I’ve had a bad experience with someone before. It would feel uncomfortable saying no, so most of us just pretend they are not there. If I lost my home right now, I would know where to go for help. If you went to a community center, they would probably be able to help, or maybe find a police or fire department. But that would only be if my entire family was also homeless or something like that. Here in Canada, there are plenty of places that a kid could go for help. For one, you could call 1-800-668-6868 to talk to a worker at Kids Help Phone. They would guide you through what to do. But those things take time to find. If I was homeless, I would spend as much time as I could looking for a place that would help me. At night, I would find the warmest sheltered place in my surrounding. Getting food would not be the hardest thing ever. As a 12 year old, I could probably just wait outside of a grocery store and ask a few customers for something to eat. Given my age, they would probably give me something (also to be noted that here in Vancouver children are more likely to get help), or help me find a place that would help me. find a place to live. As for that experience, I was outside a restaurant for dinner and a man would not stop asking for spare change. As a seven year old, that is quite scary. So that is why I am uncomfortable around homeless people. Ask yourself. Why do you ignore these people?

Bruh people keep telling me to do it the way they think is correct and bruh. That is literally what im going to do, appeal to go to the orphanage or something but ok....If you want.

Look around you, what you see is the home you live in. To us, life is just going to school and coming back. Life is the same. But what if, by any chance. You were to be abandoned on a street in Vancouver? How would you survive? In my case i would die in a day, yep. Its just that hard. If i was a lonely kid alone on the streets some guy is just gonna kidnap me and sell me off to some foreign country for some cheap money. But what if i wanted to survive? Easy, appeal for some help and get help. (Its big brain time) Im sure that someone would help a homeless kid on the streets! Amirite? So yeah, i would probably starve to death, or get frostbite and slowely freeze to death, or get eaten in a cannibal soup in the amazon forest (idk how) but you get the idea, i would die in like 2 days.

We regularly come across homeless people on the streets and we often wonder how they can survive. We have many privileges and items we take for granted that many people do not have. For example, we could get water just by taking a few seconds to go to a tap and get fresh water from it. However, people from a country with poorer conditions would have to spend much longer finding water that isn’t even clean. If one day, I suddenly lost everything and could not contact any childcare services, I would try to find lots of thick, warm clothes to protect myself from the cold and rainy weather in Vancouver. Having lots of clothes makes sleeping on the streets a lot much comfortable and solves the problem of staying warm. Another issue is finding a source of clean water and fresh food. For getting water, I would go to a random store or restaurant and asking for a glass of water. For food I can go to markets and ask for food that they were going to throw away. These strategies will allow me to sustain myself until I can find a way to get money. To get money, I would try to clean myself and try to get a job at a small store or fast-food restaurant. Once I make some money, living would get a lot easier, since I would be able to buy my own things, improve my quality of life, get better jobs, and ultimately rent a place to live. In conclusion, surviving as a homeless person with nothing is possible, though it is a painful process. We need to at least try to help homeless people when we come across them and focus on how to not become homeless in the first place if we want to live a happy life.

Have you ever taken what you have for granted? When you are not grateful for what you have, take a moment to think about people who have it much worse. To be honest I believe that I would be unable to survive (for a long period of time) out on the streets. I don’t have a lot of life experience, for example, I don’t really know how to protect myself to a degree, find food, or where to go. I also highly doubt that I would be able to mentally handle my situation. This of corse depending on the circumstances of my situation. All in all from my perspective, I don’t think that I would be able to survive on my own.

What is life to you? Some might think its boring but, what would happen if everything around you was gone and you where just alone on the streets. Well if I was alone to survive on the streets I might as well become a thief or just die. If I became a thief that would be kinda easy because this is Vancouver and the fruits stores that have out door displays of fruit that would be easy to steel off of because they are outside, but than there's the cops, boy you better ruuunnnnnn. How am I going to get money welp i could try and pick pocket if the person was distracted ( I don't know if that's going to end up well for me but might as well try). Secondly might as well just die
because I don't want to be sold on the black market in a foreign place (no not happening). In conclusion I might just be a thief or just die.( idk )

In the story ‘The Bridge Home’, it mainly talks about two homeless girls and shows their journey within their conditions of living, but have you ever thought of what you would do in their shoes? I personally would feel so lost I wouldn’t even know what to do to be honest, I have nothing in a sense. If I were them, I would most likely go live at McDonalds. Now you may be asking “Why wouldn’t you just work there too?” And the thing is that I heard that to fill out the job application you need to have/ write out your address so I don’t think that would be an operation go😗. I would probably work under others, like a house cleaner which would be hard but would give you a stable life if possible as they provide you shelter and food, but for the mean time while I’m trying to get accepted by a household I would also just like Rukku and Viji; resort to trash pieces. Life’s tough when you don’t exactly have money to spare and it is what it is, but with enough time and patience (and maybe a bit of starving) it’s how I would get through the hard times.

Have you ever heard someone, maybe your friend, or your siblings say "If you're homeless, just buy a house!" When people say that more and more, they won't understand how hard it might be for someone living on the streets, to stay alive and to survive. Put yourself in their shoes, how would you survive? Where would you get water, food, and a warm shelter to keep you from the cold? If I had to survive living on the streets of Vancouver, I am still a kid that doesn't know how to survive on the streets. I at least would try to find a river or a pond so I can stay hydrated. However, food is much harder to find than water. Water can be lying anywhere in Vancouver but Vancouver rains water, not food. So how would I find food? I could find a nearby fast food restaurant like McDonalds, and rummage through the dumpsters, and if I am really desperate for food, I might steal. But, stealing won't be a good idea. When you're homeless, you're probably constantly wishing for a house to stay in, or maybe fresh food and water, clean clothing and a clean body. To make all that happen, you will need money. How would a 12 year old make money? I'm too young to try to work anywhere so I could try making money without finding a job or working! Many people sit on the streets hoping some strangers would drop a few coins down for you. Some, might collect plastic bottles or cardboard and recycle them for money. For me, I would first stick with people giving me money. As I get older, and have more experience of what I'm doing, I'll start to pick up plastic bottles for money. Eventually, I would try to get a job. Of course, it is easier said than done. Some people spend their entire life homeless. Even if they try doing this, it might not always succeed. We take things as simple as water and food for granted. We throw away leftovers we don't want to eat, and get more picky not realizing that there are some people out there who can't even eat things as plain eggs and water. I've learned to be grateful for what I have right now. A home I can go home to, parents that support me, loving siblings, food and water. Ultimately, we should be grateful for everything we have, and that some people aren't as fortunate as us!

You might have a great life right now, but what will you do to survive if you became homeless? How would you find food? How would you find place to sleep? Where would you get money? These are things you might not think about if you are not homeless, but you should think about it today! Firstly, how will I find food? I think I am going to buy it, but if I can't, I will wait. Buying is the best way to get food and I can wait a day. Secondly, how will I find a place to sleep? I think I might sleep on the grass under a tree. If I was under a tree, rain won't come through much, and it will be like a small shelter. Thirdly, where would I get money? I think that I am going to find a job. I think I am going to work for it. I will also try to find money on the ground. Overall, I think that being homeless is really hard surviving and I hope I don't become homeless.

Right now, everyone here has a ‘good’ life, as in you don’t have to worry about housing and food, but what if you were homeless? Where would you sleep and how would you get money? First, for sleep, I would try and find a homeless shelter, but what if they’re all full? I would probably try and find a hollow bush. Secondly, money, where would I, a 12 year old get money? I would try and find a place that hires 12 year olds, apparently some stores hire 12-16 year olds so I could try there. Since the minimum wage is $14.20 i would get $71 a day if i worked 5 hours a day, which is $497 a week. With that, I would save up for a few months and then go back to school, although that’s assuming that a store would hire a 12 year old. In short, being homeless is hard and I hope we can solve homelessness soon.

Poverty can come to anyone, any ages, anyone in this world. Say that the next day I wake up and went into poverty. I would firstly go to a really really nice place near where I live. There are tons of people in poverty there but all of them are extremely nice. They don’t force you into giving money. They don’t steal your money. They are human with nice characteristics. I would go there to be with the rest of the people. I’m not going to say exactly where this is. Over there, there are a lot of shelter, and places to get food. That place has a lot of small businesses that can really help. Ill just live like that until I’m at their age to get a job. Then I will get a job and get on with my life. :)
