On Friday, we had a unique opportunity to visit the Orpheum Downtown. The students had a chance to see the VSO Elementary School Concert to see some pieces by famous composers such as Beethoven and Mozart. In addition to these pieces, an opera singer sang one song and the VSO also played the theme to Star Wars. Needles to say, we were incredibly lucky to have been able to participate in this event. Music is one of the fine arts that many of our students have passions for. Mr. Fisher and I hope you enjoyed it! Click on the image on the right to see some pics and videos.

1.) SCIENCE:

Bring any biotic and abiotic elements for your ecosystems on Monday.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Scientists have to make careful observations and have collect data in different ways. This data can be used to draw conclusions and make hypotheses.
Watch this video and complete the PAR in a standard paragaph.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Written using a standard paragraph format (intro, body, conclusion) and pay attention to the
givens (spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, etc)
2.) Explain the differences between QUALITATIVE and QUANTITATIVE observations
3.) In your paragraph, include at least 2-3 examples of each kind of observation (Qualitative and
quantitative) that you may collect from your ecosystems over the next few weeks.
4.) Give one student 2 suggestions on their post to improve it based on the above criteria.
5.) Edit/revise based on the feedback you receive.
6.) Make YOUR thinking VISIBLE!

Quantitative and qualitative data, yes are really annoying to understand, because they sound really similar. But there are differences. Qualitative data and quantitative data are different, like let's just say, a cat. the qualitative data would be that it is furry and is grey. The quantitative data would be that's it's 50 cm long and it has four legs. In my ecosystem project, a qualitative data would be, maybe that the snail would be 15 mm long and has 5 eggs so far. Then the quantatative data would be that the snail is brownish grey and has a yellowish brownish shell. Another qualitative data would be that for instance, the cucumber fed to it was 0.25 lbs, but when the snail ate some, it ended up as 0.17 lbs. the quantative data will be that it was a circle shape, but when it was aten, it ended up as a cresent shape.

Since now I know what is the difference of qualitive and quantative, i know it. Wait... I spelled it wrong! Now I need to work their spellings!

@Colin, the first sentence in your second paragraph is a little bit long and very last sentence I don’t understand. For the last sentence maybe you could change how you worded it because maybe it’s the grammar? Maybe you could change it to, “now I need to work on how to spell it!” Or something like that.

The house is purple, there are splatters of wet bird “doo-doo” on the roof, the “doo-doo” can be smelt throughout the household. This house has 21 windows and 2018 splatters of bird “doo-doo” on the roof.

Could you tell the difference between the two observations I just described to you? In the first sentence I gave you a QUALITATIVE observation. A qualitative observation is something that describes the features of an object, but DOES NOT include the number of things. When you give a qualitative observation you write down things like the texture and colour of the object. Some examples of a qualitative observation is that the slug is slippery, the worm is wiggly. Just remember that qualitative is describing the QUALTY of something.

In the second sentence I gave you a QUANTITATIVE observation. A quantitative observation is something that describes the number of something, like the slug laid 1 egg, or there are 2 snails in my ecosystem. A way to remember what quantitative means just think about QUANTITY. That’s literally in the name! (Almost.)

Qualitative observations is to use your senses to observe the results. (Sight, smell, touch, taste and hear.) And Quantitative observations is using instruments such as rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, beakers, and thermometers. Here are some examples of what Quantitative data are : there are one slug, one roly-poly, and four worm (I think) in my ecosystem.And here are some examples of what Qualitative data are : the slug in my ecosystem is brownish and the trail it left is clear. And for the four worm I think one is a baby, one look like it has been cut to half and the other two looks just fine.

What is quantitave and qualitive observations.

Quantitative is numerical data. For example, the number of pets, time of day,and the outside temperature. An another example, there are 7 oragnisms.
Qualitive is descriptive data. For example, the colour of a house, a texture of a shirt, and smell of a sock. A another example, the grass is moist.

Quantitative and qualitative, they are siblings. Quantitative is a half, but it is not enough. Qualitative is the another half. These two words must have to be connect or link together, or it is not all correct.

Scientists, science, math, the most difficult subject. My head explode. If scientists have to make a fact, the thing they thought must have to link by quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative is a real fact. What is real fact? It is not your opinion. It can be measured, it can be weight. Qualitative, it is a fact that you describe, or your opinion.

A dog, scientists will measure it and weight it to find facts. Then they will describe the dog. And then link up them. To make a complete paragraph or message.

Quantitative and qualitative, oh my goodness. Why don't they make some more easier words. Scientists are really "science" and difficult.

What’s data? In simple terms, it means the information or facts about something. But did you know that data can be divided into 2 groups? The quantitative and qualitative data. So what’s the difference between them?

Let’s start with quantitative data, the quantitative data is numerical. Which means, it can be described as the number, the time and the temperature of something. It can be shown as graphed. For example, if you “count or measure,” you’re collecting quantitative data. But there are also 2 types of quantitative data. The “discrete and continuous data.” The discrete data is usually the one you counts and the continuous data is usually the one you measure. Still, in conclusion,?they all count as quantitative data.

Now, what’s the qualitative data? The qualitative data is descriptive or observations, using words to explain something. For example, the “color” of the house, the “smell” of the soil or the “texture” of a shirt.

To describe a cat. The quantitative data would be it has 4 legs and weights 10 lbs. the qualitative data would be the cat is white and its fur is soft.

In my ecosystem project. For quantitative part, I have 2 worms, 2 slugs and 2 snails in total. The slugs and snails are really similar, they are about 3-4 cm long. The worms are about 15-20 cm long. For the qualitative part, the organism I have are mainly brown or black colors and the texture of the soil are soft and smooth.

@ Wendy - Wow! I really liked how you used the ecosystem project as an example for the P.A.R.! I like how you were clear and gave examples to make sure we understood it. Next time, maybe combining paragraph three and four would be better. They would fit really well together, considering that they are both examples. Otherwise, great!

Umm...... What is data? Well, basically, data means: distinct pieces of information. But it is not all about the definition about data. Data can be divided by two groups. One is called qualitative data and one is called quantitive data. They all have Data this word in it and they both a long words, then what is the different between them?

OK! Let's talk about quantitative Data first. Quantitative Data is numerical, it could be described by temperature, time and number. We can show it as a graphed( Ranges of values). How can we show it as a graphed? For example: If you are working in a company, and your job is to measure the table and count the books. Then this is called quantitative Data. But we have two different quantitative Data. The other one is called: continues and describe Data. The continues Data is the one that you usually us it in measuring( temperature). Discrete Data is usually the note you use to count( number). So, I think this is most of it about quantitative Data.

After we talk about quantitative Data, let's talk about quantitative Data. Qualitative Data is Descriptive or observation. For example : A 'colour' of a dog house. A 'smell' of a dirty dog or a texture of a 'shirts'. ( I think qualitative is much easier than quantitative Data)

If you want to described a dog in Quantitative Data. It would be 4 legs and weight 11alb. In Qualitative Data, it would be like the dog is wet and the colour of this dog is lack and white.

In conclusion, I know what is quantitative Data( numerical) and Qualitative Data( observation and descriptive) now.

The information we gather from researching is often split into many different groups. Two of which are qualitative and quantitative, but what exactly does that mean?

First, qualitative data is subjective data that is used to describe objects of its properties and attributes using words. It is most often used in exploratory research and doesn’t require use of statistics and numbers. Examples of when qualitative data is often gathered include observations, interviews, and basically anytime numbers aren’t used.

On the other hand, quantitative data is opposingly objective data which can be expressed by numerals. Just by looking at the name, you can see there is the word quantity which means number and value. This type of data is usually used in conclusive research. Examples of where this type of data can be found a lot include surveys, experiments, measurements, and anything that can be described using numbers.

In conclusion, I think that knowing what these two type of data mean is very important because they are both needed in any type of research. It is very important for us to always have a balance of each type of data, no matter if it is for our inquiry or our ecosystems project. I hope that next time we do research, we will be able to classify our notes into these groups to organize them!

I want to begin this P.A.R by apologizing for being absent for the entire week. The virus I had caught caused uncontrollable coughing, aching, and occasional food rejection. Due to this I was forced to stay home to avoid the cold weathers and to prevent any other being to be contaminated with my virus. I am very aware that this had made put me behind in many projects, so far to a point where I have not done anything to contribute to my ecosystem group. The status of my virus is very slowly dissipating, but it is unknown if I may be able to return to our wonderful class on Monday, but I give hope that I can. I sincerely apologize for my long absence and I hope I may return soon.

Have you every been confused with two words, or two meanings? Say piece and peace, say sound identical but have no association in definition. When examining an object or living being, we divide our types of data in two, we dub it as 'Quantitative' and 'Qualitative' data. Just from listening to both pronunciations, it can be very easy to have mistaken one for another. Quantitative data and Qualitative data have to do with collecting data of a physical existence.

Before defining both of these similar terms, we can define two other words that connect with the current terms we yearn to define, 'Quantity', and 'Quality'; By defining these words, it can make defining Quantitative and Qualitative much simpler. Quality is the way something is. Say there is this very knowledgeable and wise man, we can use that to describe a quality, a quality this man has is that he is very smart. Quantity is the estimated, or measured amount of a physical existence. If there are multiple trees, one may state that there is a quantity of trees.

Using Quantity and Quality, we can easily define Quantitative and Qualitative. Quantitative and Qualitative are forms of collecting data of a physical existence, one will examine the object/living being, and divide the information into Quantitative and Qualitative parts. Quantitative info is about the numbers, you examine something and and look at the amount, or measurements of that object/living being; A simple example of this is if one were to be quantitatively analyzing a bookshelf, one may write down that the shelf is 200 cm tall, and contains 70 books. Qualitative info is data based on ones own perception and feelings. If there was a bunny, one would analyze it and have results, it is white, and it is very soft. By quantitatively analyzing a subject, you can add data based on your own perception without any extra terms or tools.

Collecting Data is very important, as it allows us to gain a full understanding of the world, therefore allowing us to evolve and learn.

Theres this thing in our world called "data", which can be split into two groups: quantitative data and qualitative data. Here I will explain what both of those mean.

Quantitative data is numerical, meaning it's expressed by numbers. Some examples are the length of a train, the number of eyes a dog has. It can also describe the temperature. If you weigh a flamingo and find out it weighs 93 pounds, then you are finding quantitive data. (No I don't actually know how much a normal flamingo weighs)

Qualitative data is to describe an item's texture and colour. Some examples would be like a cats' fur is soft, a flamingo is pink or if the books of a bookshelf are different coloured. So if you touch a dolphin and find out it's skin is smooth, you're finding qualitative data.

Although it may be confusing at the start, it's pretty easy to understand and it actually is not rocket science!

For this entire week we have been working on how to build our own ecosystem that includes bugs, animals, plants, and food! And all of this stuff, we can identifie easyly by separating them in to two groups Quantitative data and Qualitative data!

Quantitative data is numerical like say a book self has 50 books and is 100cm tall that is Quantitative data by using graphs or measuring!
And let’s say a bed may have 300cm long and 175cm wide!

Qualitative data is describing the texture or look of a object like for instant a cat has yellow fur and bright blue eyes and a round head!

What is the different between qualitative and quantitative?

Qualitative data is the data in which the classification of objects is based on attributes and properties.
Quantitative Data is the type of data which can be measured and expressed numerically.
These are the only two groups of data. Some examples for quantitative data are the number of pets, time of day, weather outside, etc. For quatitative data, it can be graphed. Different data tracking can be used for different things for example if I look a slug and I must describe it I would use qualitative data and for measuring a slug I would use Quantative data. So as you can see different there are different ways to collect data

We have done a lot of research in the past months such as the mini-inquiry, early humans, and the ecosystem project. Even when we do the PAR, we are researching. When we research, our information goes into two big categories: the quantitative section and qualitative section.

The first category we will discuss is the quantitative section. By looking at the word, “quantitative” you see the word “quantity”. It means amount or number, so qualitative data tells you the amount of something. For instance, “there are 4 cows” is an example of qualitative data since it uses the term “4”. You can find qualitative data anywhere including scientific experiments, measurements, and anything related to statistics or math.

On the contrary, qualitative data uses words to describe information. Qualitative data describes an object’s assets using words instead of numbers. Qualitative data is often used for scientific and social research. Observations, interviews, and poem analyzations are examples of where quanlitaive data are used.

Overall, I think being aware of these two categories of data are very important because they are needed in every type of research. It is very significant to always have an even amount of both of data to achieve good inquiry or project. I anticipate that next time we do research my peers and I will be able to identify these two groups, and have a balanced amount of both.

Here’s what I think about all of this,

When you use quantity data to explain something, you are explaining with numbers. For example, if you want to explain 230,401, you would probably describe it like 200,000 + 30,000 + 400 + 1. The example hi just did also called expanded form. I don’t think it has to be a certain way. There are many ways of explaining quantitative data but I think that mine was just one though.

Now let’s talk about qualitative data.
Qualitative data is when you explain something with words instead of numbers. For example, I’m going ti use the same type of example that I used before, 230,401. This is how I’m going to explain that. Two-hundred-thounsand plus thirty-thousand plus four-hundred plus one. Again, what I showed isn’t the only way to explain with quantitative data.

I hope, I explained that correctly. Those were the differences.

We learned about quantitative data and qualitative data. At first it was quit confusing to me until my group explained it to me. Quantitative data is numbers like how much the snail weighs.
What degrees it is.
Even how much the whole habitat weighs.

Qualitative data is more observations. Like...

If the grass is growing and etc.

Qualitative data? Quantitative data? What's the difference? All I see is that they are spelled differently.

Well, quantitative data is is representing stuff with numbers. (Qauntity.) An example of quantitative data would be: In my ecosystem, there are three worms and two snails. This is called quantitavtive data as it uses numbers to describe things.

On the other hand, qualitative data is describing something in words (adjectives). Qualitative means quality. An example of qualitative data would be that this bus is 41 feet long and has a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour. (Pretty impressive!) This is considered qualitative data since it uses words to describe something.

In conclusion, there are two types of data: qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative means using numbers to describe something and qualitative means using words to describe something. Now do you see the difference?
