Wednesday: Connecting with Animal Cruelty

We had a great discussion in class today about Animal cruelty and saw a video clip of how elephants are treated in parts of Asia and Africa. We learned that they are often treated poorly in zoos and other places where they trained to entertain humans. We also learned about poachers in Africa and how they slaughter many elephants every year. After viewing the video clip, all of us were clearly affected by the cruelty that was displayed. The image to the left is one of an elephant in Thailand that I took about 5 years ago. it was heartbreaking to see it helpless and chained up. Which character from 'THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN' does this remind you of?

1.) POST A RESPONSE: Make a connection with the novel and a real life example of animal cruelty. Use the examples discussed in class and build on your ideas by doing a small amount of research online. I have posted the video clip. Please watch it again as it will help you complete your response. Include at least two sources of your information if possible. We will dissect your sources tomorrow to see if they are reliable or not. We have started to discuss research skills and looking at information with a critical eye. Be sure to include your honest opinions and feelings in your response. Be sure to include details and examples for your supporting sentences. Should human be allowed to treat animals poorly simply to entertain others? If your classmates post about a certain animal, try to post about a different one. Post any questions you have here. Don't forget to connect your response with 'THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN'.

1. Today we learned about animal abuse and why it should be stopped.
2. People who grow up with animal abuse can be cruel.
3. It would stop the animals from having physical and emotional scars.

One connection I have is that the bird was chained and wings were clipped, chickens are always abused in a manner of fact; we eat chickens, we eat their eggs, we even make them fight. I admit that I still eat chicken meat but I mean that it isn't being done everywhere else, some people are vegans and vegetarians, people can stop this because in my opinion, I can't do anything like that without getting involved with trouble with companies.

A source of animal cruelty is how horses are forced to do races and if they lose they get sold away sometimes and if they win they are giving no space because of all the humans surrounding them. Firstly while the horses are racing they are hit with a whip, secondly they are always either training, locked up, or sleeping wich means no roaming free. Lastly , if the horses are injured ( wich happens often) they are put down. I connect from the book in how Ivan and Ruby are also never able to roam free cause they are either locked in chains in their domains, out doing the circus or sleeping, and if they do something wrong they get slapped by a metal claw.

Animal cruelty is mean to the animals. Some people think that elephants skin is unbreakable. They are wrong and right. The thing that can break the skin is some thing called a bow staff. That is a stick that has a metal v at the end of the stick. In the book the one and only ivan Ruby went rough and hit Ivan where the sun doesn't shine.than,in Thailand in a elephant circus the elephants had enough and went rouge.

My connection to animal cruleity is how the animals. Are being hurt and wacked almost like the some people they are cruel to sharks they cut off all there fins and throw them back in the water. Why do such a horrible thing. Sharks are balmost like people but there animals thay want to have a life but why ruin it for them so that is a reason why animal cruelity should stop animals are almost like people dont ruin thaere lives.

I think that animal cruelty is horrible. Why, you ask? It's just like torturing an animal. Just like zoos. Zoos are just a place where they keep the animals for money. I really like zoos, they are very interesting, but I would never do anything to support zoos. I wouldn't vote to make a new zoo either. Here are great reliable sources...

One example is, a cow.
In the States' they used a Bobcat, Fork Lift, and a stick to make a cow move. Wouldn't you feel horrible if a big Bobcat picking you up to make you move? The cow was just tired, they were forcing it to move. Imagine if it was you.

In my opinion, I think that Zoo's are a horrible place for animal's becuase these poor animals are traped in this tiny cage while people stand there and take photos. I have done that before I mean I think we all have. But for whales there stuck in these small tank's while theres a big ocean out there that they could have been in but no people just want the money. They make them train so that tourist can come and watch there shows but really there forced to do all of those tricks. I have another connection with animal crueltly on youtube thers this video called farm to fridge something like that but I cant remember anyways what they would do is they would take the chickens and sometimes wack them in the head with a hammer and then they would take them to this machine that mashes them up. Sad right I know. And they would do the same thing to the cows. but worse. In the story the One and Only Ivan Mack is abusing Ruby because she was tired from the training she's young she doesn't know what to do. Mack takes out his whip and wacks it over Rubys head and thats when Ruby snaps the vine she hits mack in a place and he falls to the ground because finally she has had enough. Its just like those poor elephants in Thialand who are traped there and wacked if they dont do something properly there gonna hurt those elephants tie them down and make them work like slaves almost. Every time we we take a elephant out of its natural place and abuse them then the less were gonna have on this earth. They alsohurt them really bad and then take of there tusck's so that they can sell them and get some money. They make the elephants paint so that they could sell there paintings and get some more money. Also they make the elephants drag trees do you know how hard that would be ? I can't even imagine but they still get bet up and chained down. Well I think that its cool to see animals that ive never seen before but I dont think that they should trap them up like that ! its just unexceptable.

I have an connection with cows and animal crulty because I have watched Food Inc. (documantary) they give cows corn to eat insted of grass which nature intened for cows to eat and they just keep the cows in pens or domains then they just go number 2 and number 1 any where they want and they never go in there to clean up the fecel matter that the cows produce and how does that connect to the book "The One and Only Ivan"? well the cows live in a domain like Ivan and Ruby do in the mall but there domains are main taned also, they beat up the cows like Mack tried to beat up Ruby with the claw stick.

All over the world, animal cruelty is happening! I made two connections to this.
Firstly, our school participates in the ''Think We Group'' in this group, kids help raise money and make buildings for third world countries so that kids can go to school, people can have good homes and they can have clean, fresh water and food.
Secondly, our class is reading a book called ''The one And Only Ivan'' by about some animals who are mistreated by their keeper, Mack. He hits them with a stick and doesn't call the vet when its necessary.

In my opinion horses are being miss treated, the same way Ivan and Ruby are being miss treated because Ivan and Ruby are being held in cages (domains), the same way horses are being held in. All humans do this for is for human entertainment, and/or races. Humans are miss treating animals, because they are getting hit around just so that they would be the first in the race, or do the most amazing trick. (just so that humans can make money).

I think that animal cruelty is a very bad thing in this world. They trap and capture lots of animals so people can see them in tiny cages like Ivan and all the others. They also capture animals so they can see them in the circus and events le horse racing and elephant rides in some countries and even some animals get raised in a farm just so they can breed than they kill them for food

I think that Elephants, Chickens, Horses, Hippos, and every other animal that has to be locked up at the zoo or trained to be an entertainer for tourists. I feel like I would do anything to save those animals. I also think it's a really good idea for Katherine Apple Gates to write a book about animal cruelty so more people will understand what the animals are going through, the readers could possibly help the problem.

In my opinion,I think that animal cruelty is really sad, and no
animal deserves to be hit or hurt or not let to wander free, well
in the wild. Like zoos I know most zoos have animals in cages
or small areas and I think that a animal is meant to be in the wild.
I also think the circus is not a good place for animals because
animals sometimes get abused there, it may depend on the trainer
of the animal but usually if a animal doesn't do something they hit
it like they did in the video. Also like they do in the book the One
And Only Ivan. I know, know one has really talked about it yet but
another way of abuse is "Puppy Mills" were they breed dogs and
keep them in cages all there life and if they grow over the age of two
the kill the dog. The dogs are barley fed and starved. This is why a lot of people say not to buy a dog from a pet store because they
sometimes come from "Puppy Mills" Which the money you pay for
the dog with just goes to the "Puppy Mill" and give more
encouragement and funds to keep breeding more dogs. So if your
thinking of buying a dog you can buy it from a shelter, SPCA or a breeder.

Animal cruelty. Horrific, devastating, heart breaking, all of those words relate to animal cruelty. Today, I'm going to take specifically about cows. Yes, you heard me right, cows! All of us eat burgers or ribs. ( Except for vegetarians ) I know it tastes so GOOD! According to http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/cows.aspx , in the U.S. alone, 42 MILLION cows die every year! I searched up cow cruelty on YouTube, and found this heart breaking video, I don't want to put it up because it was just TERRIBLE on what they did. Happily, the people in the video abusing the cows were fired. I'm not going to put this in much detail but some of the things I saw were, cows being dragged by chains, and getting sprayed by a high pressure water sprayer in the face.

There is a person who had 90 dead tigers and 58 cubs stuffed into a FREEZER. Officials said they found tiger and lepard cubs walking around the attic and they saw two small alligators in the homes tub and two hungry tigers walking around on the porch. Behind a gate in the homes front yard they found at least 30 dead adult tigers some with their legs tied together

i atached this to the one and only Ivan by this person has animals just basikly in a cage or 'domain' and they dont like it there like ruby. And Rubys legs were tied up also.

Forty-seven pit bulls, bred for fighting, lived crammed in a basement-level apartment in the Bronx, the police said. They stayed in cages, some two to a cage, and, the police said, some of them might never have seen the sun before Thursday afternoon.

It was then that police officers and workers from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, surrounded by curious neighbors, carried the dogs, one by one, out of 1254 Sherman Avenue, near the Grand Concourse. They were to be collared, photographed and registered into evidence.

The police described the operation as a puppy mill for fighting dogs. In the apartment, said the police, officers found dog treadmills, 22 wooden cages, harnesses and muzzles, syringes, a loaded .25-caliber handgun and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts.

This is close to me because I hate puppy mills, and I think the people that run these type of things should go somewhere far, far away and never come back, oh how I wish Alcatraz was still around.
