WEDNESDAY: Counting by 7's

Today, we continued reading 'Counting by 7's' with the class. Although the students didn't realize it, they were able to use specific strategies to help make sense of the story. It was amazing to see how some students were able to easily make inferences about the characters and the events that hadn't yet happened. Also, the students used their experiences and background knowledge to create deep and meaningful connections. I'm so proud of all of you and how much you've learned this year!

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.
MATH 7: Only the 2.6 worksheet. The textbook questions are not for homework. We will review today's lesson in class tomorrow.

3.) SOCIALS:

Research on the history/origin of your culture's map is due tomorrow.
If possible, please print it out at home and paste it onto your flag tomorrow.
Be sure to include your sources and to follow the criteria we created in class.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we read from Counting by 7's. You were able to make deep and meaningful connections to various events and characters.
Write a short paragraph on one of the connections you made today.
Be sure to include a deep connection that pulls from your background knowledge and experiences.

Being very very nervous about being to a new school and no one knows you so you try to make an good in mark on people you konw trying get some new friends.

I made a connection while we where reading counting by sevens. I connected to when she had her first day at middle school because when I first came to school in kindergarden, I had a hard first day.

@ Cloud - Can you elaborate on that a little bit more? Dig deeper and explain how you felt when you came to school for the first time. Who did you meet? Who made you feel welcome? What do you remember?

Hi everyone today i will talk to you about one connection i made in a story called Counting By Sevens.

First of all my one connection is that when willow was coming home and cops were there at her house and my hole class thinks her parents died my connection was when i was almost three my Nana (Dads mom) died of cancer.

@ Butterflypuppy - Please re-read your response and check to see if you need any punctuation. Try separating your ideas and explain your connections clearly. Also, don't forget to capitalize your I's.

I remember being scared when I first came to Hillcrest last year. Like Willow nobody talked (not even a girl who thought I was a janitor) to me so that made me even more scared and worried that none would lie me.

I connected to when she said that she wanted to make her mark because that's what i am going to do in high school and i do it now. i think it is important to make your own mark so people can know who you are and what your trade make is.

I remember the first day when I came to Hillcrest. I couldn't get over the fact that I would not be able to see my closest friends. I eventually got over that though. Like her, I sort of got a little bit of a rough start.

One of the connections I made are that I like planting flowers with my mom in the spring. Also on my first day of kindergarden I did not know anybody so it was kind of weird.

I was barely there for reading Counting By 7's but I saw some other posts and I have the same connection as Gamer. I was in a new school that I know no one in. I felt a bit left out and very nervous but I then tried to make friends and it worked.

I have never been at a new school, but on the first day of kindergarten I was scared out of my mind and when my mom said good bye I ran around in circles then stopped and then walked liked nothing happened . After a few days I made some friends and I really got to know some nice teachers.

I was not there to read for most of the time, but from what I heard I connected with how Willow has a councillor. When we were really young, @Juliette and I went to a councillor because there was this other girl who was being really rude and mean to us. We later on got the problem solved though. Plus, she moved to another school so it's god now.

I think that dfinetely helped, since Tarkington I an adult usually helps problems anyway. I also think it was really good that she switched schools;)

I have to admit. As soon as I went into kindergarten or as soon as I enrolled in hillcrest I was so nervous. And I was afriad I would not make any friends and just be that one strange kid in the class.

@Skaterboi @Mr.Hong- To be honest I didn't really have a deep connection but I was nervous a bit when I came to Hillcrest. It is like the same nervous feeling when you start something new with people you don't know.

When I went to school I was excited and I made one friend and im still friends with him and he is in my class. When I was at school I made lots of friends. Then other new students came but they didnt like me so I wouldnt go near them

@Skaterboi you just said how people should get creative but you just said what you thought every one was doing so maybe you should change it like maybe a connection about the clothes you where or if you ever been to a counsellor. :)

The part of the story I connected to was when Willow was nervous to go to a new school. I connected because when I came to the school in kindergarten it was weird not knowing anybody and I didn't think anybody would like me. But now it's a lot different because I have some friends that I've known for a long time from Hillcrest.

A connection I had was when Willow went to her new school and nobody knew her or she didn't know any one. It reminded me of last year when I came yo hillcrest in the middle of the year. I didn't know anyone. It is really hard because it feels like you are an outcast. But I quickly made new friends! That is my connection to Counting by Sevens.

I connected that she was nervous to go to the new school. When I came to Canada I was afraid to meet friends because I can't speak English well.

One connection I had was when she was describing her classmates and she said that awesome is over used I connected because I used to say that all the time and it was annoying to me.

While we were reading the book counting by 7s one of the connections I made was not wanting to stay at school. I made this connection because in the beginning of kindergarten I did not want to go to school. My way of telling my Mom that I didn't want to go to Kindergarten was acting like a baby and grabbing on to her for dear life. After the third day of Kindergarten it got better because I made connections with other kids in my class. I also made a really amazing friend named Kaitlyn who I met in kindergarten. We started to hang out because we were the only girls who loved soccer in our class. To this very second me and Kailtyn are still great friends who play on the same soccer team and never have a dull moment together.

I had a connection like everyone else's also I was not here for a lot of it just like the other tutors. I had a connection with when he went to a new school. When I came here I was really scared and nervous but excited at the same time because I could see my friends and I could always do centers everyday.

A connection I made is to when something happened to Willow's parents, she had lost someone she had loved. When I was younger I went through a similar experience when my grandpa died of cancer. It was a hard and sad time then for my family.

I made a connection when something happened to her parents near the start of the book. 2 years ago I went to the Philippines and my brother told me when he had to stay there with my grandparents since my parents went to Paris and stuff. This happened way long ago even before I was born. And now I do my best to care for my older brother.

Although many people have had this connection I have moved schools a few times. And I don't like being the "new kid". The first school I went t in kindergarten I left halfway through the year and came to hillcrest. But then after that I left and went to hazlegrove . Then I came back here. So I know how willow feels. It's no fun being the new kid.

When she first goes to her new school I had a connection, because I know what it feels like to be the new kid in school. Even if every one is nice your still nervous because you don't want to have no one like you ,you want to make friends but I know that it can be hard to sometimes like for me it could be because your shy. But I had a connection with that
