WEDNESDAY: Inferencing

Today, students learned more about reading strategies. More specifically, we focused on inferencing by using our background knowledge. We learned that we use our background knowledge to infer meaning. Students were able to read a poem (The Hummingbird) and were able to make inferences and show their visible thinking on their activity sheets. Inferencing is one of the more challenging reading strategies. We will look deeper into inferencing tomorrow with another reading activity!

1.) LA/ART:

Come up with ideas as to what you want to draw for your onomatopoeia art assignment.
Have at least a few different words and picture ideas to draw from tomorrow.
You will receive your criteria sheet in class based on what was generated in class today.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Inferencing is deciphering meaning from what you already know about something. What you know has to do with your background knowledge, what you've read, your experiences, etc.
Choose a novel you have read or a movie you have seen and give a brief description of what happens in the novel.
Make an inference and provide evidence of what you think a sequel might be about.
Be sure to provide evidence.
Comment on at least one other student's work. Be sure to comment on their inference and see if they provided evidence as to why they made their inference.
Reply to any comments you receive.

Just today in my house I was reading a book by James Dashnerr called The Maze Runner since my mom bought it for me. (I also watched the movie, so I practically know the entire plot.) This story is about a boy named Thomas who doesn't know where he is, or who he is. But Thomas wasn't the only one, there were others too that had been memory wiped by these scientists. He notices there is a giant gate to somewhere as others call it "The Maze". They would send a small group of people to run around the maze to find the exit. But Thomas wan'ts to go through the maze to find an exit along with them. So as Thomas and the others find a way out, their journey becomes their fate.

I inferred that Thomas wouldn't just escape like that in The Maze Runner since there is a sequel of books as they are still stuck in the maze. (I also read the Death Cure which is the final book to the series.) In the Death Cure they are still stuck in the maze. But sadly I haven't read the Death Cure, not all of it.

Not long ago, I was watching the movie called "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" based on the book series "The Hobbit" by J.K. Rowling. The movie was based from the previous one when (SPOILER ALERT!) the dragon had started attacking the nearby village as all were evacuating. All but one man, was attempting to kill the dragon. And so he did. That wasn't the reason why it was called The Battle of the Five Armies, since that dragon was protecting the Dwarven Keep, it would protect the gold from all that trespasses. But since it has been slain, the Elves, the Orcs, the Villagers, and the Dwarf king's cousin, are trying to take that advantage point of defense and for all that loot as the last few Dwarves try to protect the keep. And then they started battling.

Before I watched the movie, I inferred that it would be about the Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, and Villagers would be battling for something important, maybe to capture the dragon. But I didn't know what the last army would be until I watched it.

Recently, I read a book called The Blood Of Olympus (its a fairly new book) and it is about 7 demigods trying to stop the earth mother Gaea and all her giants (she is evil. So the reason they call it blood of olympus is because if one of the 7 demigods blood spell on Olympus, even I tiny drop the earth go wakes. This book has LOTS of spoils that can be uncovered so I am going to say a *spoiler* happened at the end.

If there where to be a sequel I woul say the *spoiler* would come back.

If anyone is intrested in this book I recomend you read the whole series first. the series is called The Heros of Olympus. The school library has some of the books.

@Azbo, I didn't really understand your last sentence about the spoiler, because when you read it and as long as you don't skip any pages, that spoiler doesn't get spoiled to you. Ex. I am half way done from reading that book. Then someone said how the book ended, I would then stop reading since he "spoiled" it to me.

Right now I'am reading a book called Framed. It's about a kid named Griffin Bing and his is accused of stealing a super bowl New York Jets because someone found his retainer were the ring should be and of his past history of breaking out animals at zoos (In book one Zoobreak) and stealing back a baseball card worth millions $$$.( book two Swindle)

I infer that he did not steal it and someone put him up to it and, it was someone that does not like him.

You should watch your grammar because when you are explaining why he is accused, you did not say what super bowl thing it was that he was accused of stealing.

I read fablehaven 1-5 basically two siblings brother and sister go to their grandpa's house to learn that it is a preserve for manically creatures they get sucked into the world of magic and then eventually save everyone in the world, I would assume that the sister would become closer to the fairy queens son and the brother would start either dragon taming or bending demons to his will more often. I base this of of the fact that the brother did previously bent 3 wraiths to his will (evil ghostly extremely powerful creatures) and found the sword of light and darkness(vassilis), the sister I infer because the fairy queen's son (bracken the hornless unicorn) really likes her and they killed gorgon the demon king together(how romantic right).

So basically that is my inference of what may happen if Brandon mull makes fablehaven 6. I did not discern too much since I highly suggest this series(I read it 5 times over).

I've just read Diary of the wimpy kid the long haul it's about a kid named Gregory and his family going on a road trip with lots of ups and downs like a flat tire, meeting unpleasant people, and a really hot car, etc.

SEQUEL
I think the next diary of a wimpy kid will be about him and his family going on a trip in a plane and Gregory by accidently goes in a different plane because he didn't want to go in the plane right away and went in to the shuttle on the right of the next one.

EVIDENCE
My evidence is that they already went on a road trip so why doesn't he go on a trip on a different kind of transport and because in the book he said we go on a trip every summer.

I am reading a book called The scorch trials it is the maze runner series if you don't know what it is it is about a boy named Tomas That is stuck in a maze called a glade and the have to get out. When they get out of the maze the are in a place called the Scorch And the maze and the Scorch are trials and they have to get out and there are monsters called grievers and the sun has made a flare witch is a disease that make people go crazy and Tomas is immune and the galders are too and i did not finish the book so

I am reading a book called Stranded and it is about 4 friends and 2 adults who are out on there boat but they get hit by a storm. The 2 adults get separated from the boat in the storm and the boat crashes on an island.The 4 kids are left alone to survive on an island with a scarce amount of food and water. There are actually 2 more books in the series, and in the first book they do not escape. So I infer that in the second book things are going to get worse and they will not have escaped the island yet since there is a third boom I don't think they will escape in the second one either. Although, I think that they will escape the island in the third one.

A novel I had recently read was , "Percy Jackson, Sea Of Monsters". This book is about gods, demigods, and half-bloods; like Percy Jackson, Annabeth, and Grover. Basically they fight against other monsters. In this book the barrier had broken and poisened Thalias' tree. So In the last chapter of the book, "Percy Jackson, Sea Of Monsters", they had found a way to protect the barrier again and also to bring Thalia back alive. And that what happend in the last chapter. Firstly, I know that they brought Thalia back alive, so I infer that in the next book Thalia would be part of the team of half-bloods with Percy Jackson, Annabeth, and Grover. I know this because, they had brought Thalia back alive.

ANNIE (I know there is not gonna be a second one but I'm still going to do this)

In Annie the classic there is a little girl who lives in a foster home with a horrible owner. One day a rich guy decides to adopt her for a week for plubicity reasons. But than they get attached to each other and he adopts her for good.

In the second one I think It will be about Annie as an old person and adopts some girl that has the same problem as her

I picked the hobbit The Battle of the Five Armies

I think there may be a new movie however the hobbit ties in with the lord of the rings. The next movie I think will involve the Dragon smaug maybe. Also the Hobbit and the wizard Gandolf and the friends who make a dwarf army or something along the lines of that

My book I have read is Warrior Cats.
There are different clans full of cats and they fight off what ever threat there is for their clans. They fight over prey mostly. Some cats get attacked when they go into other clans territory.

My inference is, I know that cats are good hunters because they catch mice. They are very smart. I know this because my cousins cat Boots catches lots of mice and brings them back under there porch.

I think the sequel to this book would be, the clans get together into one big clan and fight of what ever dares to try and slow them down.

I watched the movie " The Maze Runner "
The movie is about a man named Thomas that gets sent into a maze by a high speed elevator. There were people there to help Thomas find out what the maze is all about. People warned Thomas to not go beyond those walls. The maze. When Thomas saw the captain hurt. But there was no choice but to save him. The maze walls were closing. Thomas ran into the maze and everything changes. They do find a out. But it's not over the maze was just the beginning.

My inference is that Thomas and others find there out and they sent to another trial. I don't think it's another maze. The trial is the scorch trial.

I think that the sequel would be that they go into the broken city and they see people with flares a dangerous virus that spreaded mankind. But it wasn't just any city. It was buildings in the middle of no where. With lighting. The reason why I say lightning is because the book cover.

my inference is that Thomas makes it through and they have more problems because there are more movies coming but I think the second one will be about fire because it is titled scorch trials.

1.) My book is Divergent
In Divergent there is a girl named Tris. They have these things called Factions. Factions are like the choices you make from the interests you have. There are 5 different factions. Abnegation is the selfless. Amity is the peaceful. Candor is the honest. Erudite is the intelligent. Dauntless is the Brave. Your probably thinking to yourself right now well if divergent Isn't a faction what is it. Well all tell you Divergent is a person that has more than one place where they belong. In this book Tris is Divergent. Others believe that Divergent couldn't be controlled because they had trates of all different faction. Anyway if you are divergent you can't let anyone now because they don't like Divergent and if they find out your Divergent they will kill you. Near the end of the story Tris is hiding from the Dauntless because they found out she was Divergent.

2.) One inference I have for the sequel is well I think that since near the end of the book Tris was hiding for the Dauntless I think she is still probably hiding from them. I also think that because she got away more people are looking for her.

The book I read was called "Uglies".
What this book is about is, humans living in two diffrent worlds Uglies, and pretties. You get to live in the uglie world till you turn sixteen, and when you do, you get a plastic surgery to become "pretty". And there is a girl named Shay that unlocks a secret to what the sugery really does to you.

My prediction is that Shay after she got captured she was forced to get the surgery, she is now living in he pretty world and her memory was earased and later on her memory starts to come back to her.

Half of this is my prediction because I read alittle bit of th second book, and the ending of the first book kinda gave it away. But I think she is going to get spyed on because after she took the surgey they were still alittle worried. And they wouldntlet someone go.

I chose the movie maze runner

Thomas arrives in a place known as the Glade, left with no memories except his name. He meets other teenage boys called Gladers who have created a community. Thomas then becums a runner to explore the maze but there are things called briefed that sting people and turn the into a bad person, anyways he find where the griefers hide and where the people who put him there live.
Turns out the whole thing was a test for survival and in the video they see explains everything .
So they escape out and are safe but not for long because the next book is called the scorch trials and turns out the world is a dessert and they need to survive out there I think so that is my summery and inference

I am reading a book named Famous Last Words by Katie Alender. The book is about a girl who just moved to Hollywood and unfortunately Hollywood is being stalked by a killer named "The Hollywood Killer". In her new house she is being haunted by a ghost who is trying to tell her something about the murders. All she knows is, she has to confront the ghost in her house, or she just might lose her mind or life. Later in the book she finds the killer (I won't say who it is in case you want to read the book) and the ghost stops haunting her. I can make an inference about the sequel of the book by what I already know. I think that the sequel is going to be about the killer's life before he became a murderer and why he started killing people. I think this because it is probably a question that a lot of the people who read the book ask themselves and because it would be interesting to read about.

I recently read the last apprentice:slither and it was about a farmhouse on the edge of town that was in danger of a so called "beast" wich is a main charector named slither. The farm Owner made a deal with him that if he died slither needed to take the two youngest dauters to their uncles in the east and slither could have the oldest to sell to their species slave market.Then they go on a long journey,meet a friendly witch and have some near misses. I infer that the sequel to this book will be that when the oldest daughter is sold the byer will be the witch and it will be about her learning the things that the witch knows

Not recently but a while ago I read this book called "quiditch through the ages" and it was based on the Harry Potter series of movies and books. In that area Potter seriesthey have this game called Quidditch and the book the book describes all the materials that are used to play.basically it describes what a snitch is a little like Golding the smallest bowl in the game but it's the most important if you can catch it because it's flies really fast you win 150 points and your team wins the game Quidditch. Another bowl is called a qwaffle and it is the main one that team players pass around to get it into one of the three hoops to earn 50 points each time. And the last two are called bloodgers and because on each team there are two players that are called beaters and they carry around what looks like miniature baseball bats and when bloodgers come around they have to hit it as obsticles to distract the other team.

I read a book called Wonder and this book is about a boy name August who has deformed face. He is afraid of other people thinking him weird. He was home schooled because of his face, but in grade 6 his parents and he decide that he is going to school.
I can make an inference that August studied hard while he was homeschooling because in the book he helped his friend to get better grade, and he got great mark for school. If he didn't study hard while he is homeschooling, he might not get a chance to help his friend.

I think that the s equal to the maze runner will be them going into the desert and needing to survive in there and there is obstacles and they have to try and leave the desert because in the maze runner at the end of the movie the scientist lady said that there is more or something like that and then they went into a helicopter over the desert.

I read this book Divergent and its about this girl named Tris and these are these things named Factions and then there is divergents and Tris is one of them. Divergents are dangerous to some people but they are actually not dangerous. In the end they escaped the down. In the next book I think they will run into more trouble with the factions.

I read diary of a wimpy kid ( the new one) and he is having lots of problems like usual and he goes on a road trip and it goes terribly wrong. so I think in the next book he is going to have problems with their new family pig that they won at the fair. I think this because the pig was center of attention and it looked like he was going to be important.

The movie I chose is the lord of the rings The return of the king. It is really hard to give a summery of the book/movie because so much happens but I will do my best. Frodo and Sam destroy the ring and to help Argon and the gang make a battle to help keep the irks and the other bad things away. Argon becomes king and Frodo Sam Pippin and Perry go back to the shire.
I think Argon will be a amazing king and really help keep peace with everyone. He will still keep intoch with all the other members of the fellow ship. Also I think Frodo will keep going on adventures and keep telling tales as he goes. As for Leoglas I think he would just keep being awesome.

I have read this novel called "Shes so Dead To Us" it is about a girl who's dad stole a bunch of money from all of their friends and her family moves out of town for a year. Shortly through that year her dad skips town again but without her family. After this her and her mom move back to their old neighborhood but are unwelcome by their old friends. After this a new boy comes to town and all I will say is that things heat up between them.

I think the next book will be about the girl (Ally) and the new boy (Jake). I also think there will be some drama with her old friends and her dad.
