Google Maps Aerial view - Hanauma Bay

Today, the students used their powers of observation to pick out different aspects of the environment they were able to see on our virtual field trip to Oahu, Hawaii. The students were able to make observations about landscape, architecture, transportation, density/population with respect to proximity to the ocean and mountains, fishing industry, without stepping foot on the island. Social Studies will never be the same! :-)

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work
MATH 7: #1-6 Section 3.4 Math 7 Textbook

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Click here to check out the top 100 landmarks seen on Google Maps! This will give you a better idea of what landmarks top choose in Canada.
Add a new layer to you map for popular landmarks. Title it 'LANDMARKS'. Include ONE SIGNIFICANT LANDMARK for each province.
Post your shared link (NOT PRIVATE) here and be sure to make it visible for all to see. Do not provide a link that users must request access to view.
Read another student's post and research one of the 'LANDMARKS' they chose. This means you must find a website that provides some interesting and reliable information about this landmark. Copy and paste this reliable link as a 'REPLY' to the other student's post.
When conducting your research, be sure to think critically when choosing the best source of information.
In your own words, provide 3 interesting facts about the specific landmark. DO YOUR BEST NOT TO REPEAT ONE THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN MENTIONED ON THE BLOG BY OTHER STUDENTS!

Mr. Hong, If we want a MAJOR challenge, could we possible... I don't know put ALL 100 grand monuments listed on that website? Because I would be very interested to do this. And if its okay then could I possibly make another new map to list all of them?

In addition, when you said "Add popular landmarks to your map from the weekend on a different layer. You can title this layer 'LANDMARKS'. Include ONE for each province." Do you mean from anywhere or just from Canada?

STANLEY PARK:
Stanley park is one of the most biggest parks around British Columbia, but i'm not sure about all of Canada. It is about 1,001 acres big.

It is known to be one of the first areas to be explored in the city, and the land was used originally indigenous people for thousands of years, even way before British Columbia was populated or colonized by the British people around 1850's.

There are famous monuments for those tourists that like to go around.

9'O Clock Gun - Fires at 21:00, or 9:00 PM.
Deadman's Island - There is absolutely NO public access to that area, but may be seen from a certain point.
Totem Poles - It is the most tourist attraction around British Columbia, most of them were moved to a museum to keep it "preserved" over the years, but only a few remain now.

Interesting fact: You can have your wedding in Stanley Park by the lighthouse area, once when I went there, I actually saw someone got married there, taking pictures, wearing tuxedos and dresses.

C.N Tower

In less than 1 minute you will find yourself at about 346m above ground overlooking Toronto.

There is also a glass floor that you are able to stand on which is so strong it can hold up to 14 large hippos.

You can also take a skypod elevator to the main observation level which will take you up to 447m with a 360 Degree view of Toranto and Lake Ontario

Niagara Falls

-it is made from 3 waterfalls. The American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and The Horseshoe Falls

-It is illegal (and not very smart) to go over the Niagara Falls. also a number of people have tried it anyway and gotten very injured if not killed.

- Niagara Falls is also a source of hydro power, making very high amounts of electricity

-The Niagara Falls was made by glacier around 10000 years ago.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS.
FACT 1: The Rocky Mountains are a chain of mountains found in the western United States and Canada that extends from the US and then ends in Canada.

FACT 2: The total distance from start to end of the mountain range is over 3,000 miles (4,830 km) and it covers an area of 382,894 sq miles (991,691 km.

FACT 3: The chain is often referred to as “The Rockies”, and is an awesome site to see in any one of the two countries it is found in.

CN TOWER..

The CN tower is 553.55m (1815.1ft)

The CN tower completed in 1976 at the time it was the worlds largest tower but now there are taller buildings.

The word CN means Canadian National, The railway company that built the CN towers name.

Bonus Facts:
Currently the CN tower is the worlds 6 tallest building in the world, It attracts roughly 2 million tourists.

The CN Tower at 553.33 meters (1,815 ft., 5 inches) was once the tallest building, tower, and freestanding structure, but as of 2010 retains the title of world's tallest tower

The CN Tower was built at an original cost of $63 million.

The CN Tower was built to withstand an earthquake of 8.5 on the Richter scale (the Kobe earthquake in 1995 was 7.2 on the Richter scale). The upper reaches of the CN Tower were built to withstand winds up to 418 km/h (260 mph).

Science World

1.) Science World became the Telus World of Science on July 20, 2005.

2.) The building was built in 1985 for Expo 86.

3.) There are 391 lights and 766 triangles on the Science World dome.

To add a layer you go to the top of your map where you have marked all you territories and capital cities and you scroll to the very top where you map name is and below that says add layer. Hope this helped for more help go to yesterdays post Mr. Hong explained it there as well.

The Cabot Tower
1.) The began building the tower in 1898.
2.) They built the tower to honer the 400th anniversary of when John Cabot discovered Newfoundland.
3.) It was as built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

CN Tower

In 1995, the CN Tower is designated a Wonder of the Modern World.

On a clear day, visitors could see over up to 160 kilometers.

The CN Tower at 553.33 meters was the tallest building, and tower.

Grouse Grind
Climb a long hike then get to the top and have a great view of Vancouver and see bears, owls, and nature.

Did you know Hikers were first recorded on Grouse Mountain in 1894 when a hunting party shot a blue grouse bird and named the mountain in the bird’s honour.

Did you know the Grouse Grind is 2,830 steps.

South Saskatchewan river

The South Saskatchewan River is a major river in Canada that flows through the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The South Saskatchewan would completely freeze over during winter, creating spectacular ice breaks and dangerous conditions in Saskatoon.

The river originates at the confluence of the Bow and Oldman Rivers near Grassy Lake, Alberta.
