Physical and Chemical Changes

Today, the students continued learning about the different states of matter and how to distinguish between physical changes (reversible and non-reversable) and chemical changes. They collaborated with their groups and actively searched for reliable information. They stored their files on their Google Drives so they could all work on their research at the same time and add to them outside of school. The students not only included images of examples of physical and chemical changes, but also included the definitions in their own words. One student asked, "Why is it important to understand the difference between the different types of changes?" This is a question I want all of you to think about for tomorrow.

2.) SCIENCE: Quiz tomorrow based on your inquiry/research today.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Based on what you learned from your research in class today, what are 5 clues that could identify that something has undergone a chemical change?
Give examples for each of the 5 clues. HINT: You may have to do some additional research from home.

1) if a piece of bread rots it will grow a greeny, black and grey looking spot that its called mold.
2) if I rub a match on a stone it will eventually catch on fire which will create heat.
3) dry ice can turn into gas
4)if we do the same experiment as the borax snowflake a solid can from in liquid
5) turning a cooked egg back to a raw one

1.) Bubbles of gas appear. For example, bubbles can appear on dry ice as it sublimates.
2.) A precipitate forms. (a solid material) For example, If metal rusts you see a red material form.
3.) A color change occurs. For example, If metal is touched or soaked in water it will change into a red color.
4.) The temperature changes. For example, if you check the temperature of dry ice ice a it is sublimating the temperature will change.
5.) A change in volume occurs. For example, dry ice turns into a gas and the volume changes because gas can move around a lot unlike a solid.

-When food gets rotten they change color.

- If you add a whole bunch of tree branches and light it with a lighter the tree branches will burn.
3.) A solid metal material called a precipitate forms a liquid.
- When an ice cube is left outside in the sun it turns into a liquid.
4.) Bubbles of gas are made.
- Bubbles can be seen?
5.) The change is difficult or impossible to reverse.
- When you bake a cake, it's very hard to turn it back to cake batter.

A new colour appears. - When you mix some chemicals/paint you get new colours.
Heat light or sound is given off or absorbed. - when you rub 2 sticks together on a rock or put your glasses in front of the sun, a fire will SWOOSH!
A solid material called a percepitate forms a liquid. - dry ice will eventually be a gas
Bubbles of gas are formed. - (I can't find an example of this)
The change is difficult or impossible to reverse. - you can not turn purple water back to it's pure very easily

Heat, light, or sound is given off or absorbed: when you rub both of your hands together your hands get hot!
A solid material called Percepitate forms a liquid: i honestly dont know an example for this :(

New colours form- A peice of bread if left out will go from light brown/white to greenish white
You'll hear sounds- When wood urns you can hear the sparks crack
Solids will form in liquid
Bubbles or gas are formed

1: A new colour appears. For example: If you leave an apple out (with-out skin) it will turn brown.
2: Bubbles of gas are formed or created. You may notice an odor. For example: when bananas rot they smell really bad!
3: The change is difficult or imposible to reverse. To illustrate: You can't really reverse bread to being un-moldy.
4: Heat, light or sound is given off (or absorbed). For example: When a candle is burnt there is light and heat.
5: A solid material (called a precipitate) forms in a liquid. For example: When ice cream melts in the sun, it will turn into a liquid;)

When a chemical change occurs the odor may change, the release or gain of energy can happen. Also new colors may appear, gas maybe formed. You can also know if a chemical change has occurred if whatever has happened is non reversible for instance if you fry eggs you can't turn it back to how it was in the beginning.

The 5 clues you can identify are:
1. A new colour may appear. Meaning the colour would have changed. For example, when your ring has rusted. It has changed it's colour.
2. Heat, light, or sound is given off or absorbed. For example, if you bring water to a boil you will hear bubbling sounds from the heat.
3. Bubbles of gas are formed and a new odour could be noticed. For example, rotting fruit because you can smell a new not so fresh odour.
4. A solid material (Called a precipitate) forms in a liquid. For example, an ice cube can go from a solid then melting changing its form making it a liquid.
5. The change is difficult or impossible to reverse. For example, you light a candle and the wax starts melting. You can not bring it back to it's original size shape and or form.

1) Dry ice turns into carbon dioxide. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide so you can turn it back into carbon dioxide. reversible.
. Another example of chemical change is when leaves change color in the fall. irreversible.
2) Burning a log while you're camping,

3)physical reaction: ice can turn into a liquid which can then turn into water vapour when it gets hot

Example: An half eaten apple that turns brown, this happens because chemical changes happen when food go bad.

Example: When you stir hot chocolate powder with steaming hot water, it dissolves because of heat.

Example: When you boil water, the water turns into a gas.

Example: If you take a glass of water and put it into the freezer, it will solidify and turn into a solid which is ice.

Example: You can turn water into ice and then ice into water. But, if you make cake batter and then bake it into a cake. You then can't reverse it back.

There is many things that will be changing.

1) Bubbles of gas can be formed anear the object.
2) The feel of the object can be diffrent eg. solid-liquid
3) A diffrent shape can be molded in to the object.
4) The colour of the object could be changing.
