Pros and cons of creating energy

Today, the students learned more about probability. In the previous math class on Monday, the students had an opportunity to play a few different probability games that allowed them to see the difference between theoretical probability and experimental probability. The students learned that if they increase the number of trials in an experiment, it would give them results that would get closer to the theoretical probability. Remarkably, we lucked out and in the demonstration, our experiment equalled exactly what the theoretical probability was! Everyone in the class was surprised by this! We all realized that sometimes luck is on our side!

I played rock, paper, scissors with another person. The chances of your opponent choosing rock, paper, or scissors are all 1/3, theoretically. We played 10 times and my opponent chose rock 6/10 of the time and the rest paper. Using probability estimates with rock, paper, scissors doesn't really work.

The theoretical ratio to the chances of your opponent choosing rock paper or scissors is 1/3 or %33

@ Kevin,
You said it doesn't really work with Rock, Paper Scissors, but I did the same test and got this.

This was as close to 33.33 or 1/3 as possible. But on a larger scale and different numbers, I could possibly get it exact.

Flipping a card:
There is a 50 50 theroetical chance of getting the front of the card from getting the back of the card. I flipped the card a total of 10 times. So, while I was flipping this card 10 times, I had gotten 3 back and 7 front. So that means 30% 3:10 and 70% 7:10. If I was to get more to the 50 50 for each flip, I would just simply do more flips than ten until I get 50 50.

I put 5 marbles on the table in front of me, each a different colour. The colours were red, yellow, green, white and black. I closed my eyes and reached out, picking up a random marble. The theoretical chance of me picking up each colour of marble is 1/5, or 1:5, or 20%. But when I actually did the experiment 10 times, I picked the red one 3 times (30%, 3:10, 3/10), the yellow one 1 time (10%, 1:10, 1/10), the green one 4 times (40%, 4:10, 4/10), the white one 0 times (0%, 0:10, 0/10), and the black one 2 times (20%, 2:10, 2/10). My experimental probability was not close to my theoretical probability because sometimes, when you try some type of experiment only a few times it is very random and not quite accurate. To fix this problem I can either try the experiment with lots more people or try it a lot more times on my own.

I put a pen in the middle, and I had 1 coloured sticky note, on each side of the pen. The blue sticky note was on the right, and the pink sticky note was on the left. I spun the pen to see which side it would land on as my experiment. The theoretical probability of the pen landing on pink or blue is 1/2 or 50%. When I did the experiment, I got 4 blue (40%, 4/10, 4:10) and 6 pink (60%, 6/10, 6:10). My experiment was pretty close to my probability because I thought it would be 50%. If I wanted to get exactly 50% on each of them, I could just keep going with more rounds or more people to get a more accurate result.

I put 4 pencil crayons in a pile and picked randomly.

My results where really close to my probability because the chances of the book landing on its front and the back up is the same as the book landing on the back with the face up (which is a 50% chance).

I Foldeds a peice of tape in a square that had a H for head and T for Tails and through it up in the air ten times to see the probability.

the ratio for the heads are 6:10 and the tail is 4:10

Choosing Paper
I cut three pieces of paper and on has a green star, one has a yellow star, and one has a brown star. I will pick these pieces randomly 10 times.
Prediction:The percent will be 33.333% chance of each one being chosen.

Conclusion: My prediction was not correct or even close! It will get closer though if I would have done it more times to get a better average, than if you do it enough times you would get dead on 33.333%.

8 Times I had the back so its 8:10 or 80% and 2 times I got the picture side so its 2:10 or 20%.
