WEDNESDAY: Scientific Variables

We began the day with science, watching a video about independent, dependent, and controlled variables. We discussed examples of these variables and identified them in experiments.

In math, we started with our integer project: a series of mini-assignments where students can choose from a menu of options. Students will have lots of choice for how they want to express their learning about integers!

1.) SCIENCE (Extra credit/optional assignment): If you would like to further demonstrate your understanding of extreme environments, you can complete the extra credit assignment at tinyurl.com/div4extracreditscience.

2.) SOCIALS/LA: Revise your socials project according to the criteria!

Your project needs to be finished for tomorrow for the peer assessment.
Please remember to bring your criteria sheet to class tomorrow!

3.) BOOK CLUB: Finish reading and taking notes on Section II (catch up!). We will continue with book club discussions tomorrow.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE (Science): Think of two experiments you could do (NOT the ones we already discussed in class), and identify the independent, dependent, and controlled variables. Your response should be of the format:

Experiment: Testing whether the amount of sunlight affects plant growth.
Independent variable: Amount of sunlight
Dependent variable: Amount of plant growth
Controlled variables Types of soil, Types of containers, Type of seed and the type of lid.

For the experiment, you do not need sources. But please revise and write examples that we did not already discuss in class.

Experiment 1 description: I am testing if a different type of soil grows flowers better than the other.
Independent variable: The soil.
Dependent variable: Which flower grows quicker.
Controlled variables : Type of water each one gets, amount of sunlight each one gets, has the same flower seeds, and is in the same pot.

Experiment 2 description : Does a different type of container effect growth in a flower?
Independent variable: The container.
Dependent variable: Which container does the flower grows the most in.
Controlled variables : The soil, same amount of water, same sunlight, and the same seeds.

1: Will a plant grow faster than the other if its givn JUICE or WATER.
Independant variable: Wich plant will grow faster? Or will it not grow at all?
Dependant variable: The liquids its givn.
Controlled variable: Which will grow faster or not grow at all.
2: If You grow a plant in the desert or in a jungle, wich one will grow bigger.
Independant variable: Wich plant will grow bigger. (One is in the desert, And ones in the jungle.)
Dependant variable: Amount of growth.
Controlled variable: Same plant, and same pot. Wich gows bigger?

Experiment 1: Does a different size of wand for bubbles make the bubbles different sizes too?
- Independent variable: one wand big, one wand small
- Dependent variable: How big the bubbles are based on how big the wands are
- Controlled variables: The shape of the wand, the material used in the wand, the thickness of the wand, the amount of air going through the wand when blown.

Experiment 2: Does a different kind of toaster oven affect how much bread is toasted?
- Independent variable: The kind of toaster oven
- Dependent variable: How much the bread is toasted
- Controlled variables: The temperature of the toaster oven, how long the toast is put in for, the way the piece of bread is put in (length vs. width), the way the bread is toasted (eg. bake, broil, toast,)

1) Do kids get more sick on rides if they have been on a bunch of rides before the one they go on next or if they eat before they go on it?
One of them they are going on lots of spinny rides and the other they have eaten
What one makes kids more sick
They are on the same ride at the same time in the same weather.
2) Are dogs healthier eating dog food or people food?
One dogs eating dog food and the other is eating human food
What makes dogs healthier
they are the same breed in the same place.

Experiment #1:
If you put a peice of wood on top of normal water and salt water, which water will the wood float better on?

independent variable: type of water
Dendent variable: Which water is easier to float on/ the wood to float on
Controlled variables (at least 4): type of wood, size of wood, amount of water, shape of wood, type of container for the water.

Experiment #2:
coloured dyed grass or grass with juice on it, which one grows faster?

independent variable: coloured dye/juice
Dendent variable: grass growth
Controlled variables (at least 4): type of dye, type of juice, type of grass, height of grass, colour of dye, location.

Controlled Variables: Ride speed, ride length, ride location, if you have food in your belly

How would eating specific fruits at the same pace (as in amount as in like 1 apple and 1 pear) change your health?

Independent Variable: Two different fruits eaten at same pace
Dependent Variable: Changes in physical and mental health
Controlled Variable: Type of fruit, amount of actual measured consumption

Does playing a specific type of game improve your mental health as in quicker reactions?
Independent Variable: Type of Game Played
Dependent Variable: Improvement in mental activities
Controlled Variable: Different Specific Genre of game, different themes, styles of play, time spent, etc...

What would work better, putting warm milk in a cake batter, or cold milk?
Independent Variable: The type of milk
Dependent Variable: The amount of milk
Controlled Variable: How old the milk is, the type of cake batter, size of the pan, the elevation of the milk being pored in.

Experiment #2
What paper towel absorbs the most liquid?
Independent Variable: What Brand it is
Dependent Variable: The amount of liquid, needed to be absorbed
Controlled Variable: How old it is, the thickness, the sponge, texture, condition.

Independent variable: Two apples in the same temperature and location.
Dependent variable: Which fruit can produce a substance (Mold) before., how big is the apple.
