WEDNESDAY: Sound Amplifiers

Today in Art, the students made their very own toilet paper roll speakers for their mobile devices. They were very interested in learning the differences between using short, long, narrow, and wide openings. They learned that this affects how loud they could amplify their mobile devices. Some students created ones for the iPods and some made amplifiers for their iPads. It was interesting to see the students really enjoying

In addition to this, the students brainstormed and generated criteria for their upcoming Adaptations assignment/project.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7:

Pg 54-55 Questions #1, 2, 4, 8, and 9.
Watch this Khan Academy Video on 'Lowest Common Denominator'.
Watch this Khan Academy Video on 'Lowest Common Multiples'.
Short quiz tomorrow on the above video concepts.

2.) SCIENCE: Think of an organism and decide which organism you will start researching and at least 5 different adaptations it has made over time to help it survive.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this video on a new adaptation of a specific species of penguins scientists recently discovered. and answer the following questions: (Gr. 7's do not spoil this for the Gr. 6's but do your best to post your response as if it is your first time seeing it.)

1.) Is this new information an example of an adaptation?
2.) How does this adaptation help this species of penguin to fly?
3.) Is this a reliable video? If so, explain why using your research skills. If not, explain using your
research skills.
4.) Does this link pass the C.R.A.A.P. test? If not, how does it fail? Click here to review the

1 I Don't think it's real because genetically if The Reable to fly why do they never use it to their advantage .but I do think it does an example of an adaptation and they never told you when they discovered this. And that's why don't think it passes The craap test

Yes this is an example of an adaptation because it allows them to go around places. It helps them to protect themselves. But I do not believe this is real because penguins just cannot carry all that weight with their tiny wings. As well, that video is six years old, and it could be dated. I do not think it is reliable because the majority of things I searched up said it is impossible for penguins to fly. I guess it is half failed the test and half passed. Firstly it was made 6 years ago, so that makes it harder to believe, though the people who created the video are BBC, although they still could be wrong. It does not seem accurate because I do not believe anyone has said they can fly because of the size of their wings. But it does have a purpose to prove. I do not believe BBC would put up a fake video. Thats what I think.

1)no i dont think so because i did some research and it said penguins uset to fly but now they swim incited.

This is an adaption because now they are like flying birds, who can go wherever they want easily by flying. Like it the weather in the south isn't good enough, they can just fly away, instead of walking. Also for protection for predators, by flying they won't have to worry about land predators.
I don't think this is real because of the last seen where they are showing them in Hawaii. That just seems a bit unrealistic.

NO! I don't think penguins can fly because why would'nt I have heard about this sooner. Also I don't beulive that a penguin could fly to Africa form Antartica if a penguin was to fly it would probuly just fly 4 - 5 feet of the ground.

I do not think penguins can have the adaption to fly because there to hevey and the oil they prodeuce will not make them able to fly maybe 2 - 3 ft of the ground but not all the way to south Africa. But it would cool and help if they could fly to get away from preaders.

Penguins flying is an adaption, because they can go anywhere they want by flying. On the other hand, I don't believe they can actually fly because this video was made a very long time ago, and it's physically almost impossible for penguins to actually fly because all that weight is too much for those little wings. But this is also a video from BBC which is supposed to be reliable. I also find it kind of weird how in a couple minutes it switches from winter and snow setting to hot Amazon setting....

if this were real I would say that it would be an example of an adaptation because first off penguins could only fly if they're flippers or arms where wings instead of flippers. and second off if they were to fly I would doubt that with their weight and shape and size they would even be able to lift their big far body's off the ground. and I don't think this would pass the c.r.a.a.p test because it is mostly just out of date and not only that but if you look close enough you can see it is just an animation otherwise if you where to see the penguins flying up in the sky they would probably just turn away from you. I can tell its fake because of the overall reaction of the penguins. that is how I found out it was animated.

Flying Penguins.
Flying is a really good example of an adaptation because they can fly away from their predators. I am not trying to give it away but every time I watch a YouTube video, I look at the date, and what do you know, they uploaded this right before April Fool's Day. This doesn't fully meet the CRAAP test because it is out of date and they didn't zoom in to the penguins flying unlike other documentaries about birds. The background/backdrop of the scene is also very confusing, for a second it is snowing and cold and then it is very mild and Amazon-y.

I don't exactly think the penguins can fly because it does not seem as it can be true. And the video looks very video edited and according to my research I did, I doesn't not seem that penguins can fly. And there in the video it doesn't look very cold. It looks fairly warn. In conclusion I really think this video does not pass the crap test. Scientist have proven before that penguins cannot fly at all. But you never know, maybe penguins will fly someday by adapting to another environment and learn to fly and live in the jungle. I think jungle penguins would be cool.

If penguins could fly, then they would use them to get away from predators. This would be an adaptation. But penguins can't fly, which is what I have seen on the reliable sources that I have found. The video was uploaded 2008, so it is very outdated. So this video does not meet the criteria of the CRAAP test. Not to mention it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that penguins could never fly. :)

flying penguins is an example of an adaption. this adaption would help them because they could fly to where their food is and avoid ocean predators. this is not a reliable video because if penguins could fly, it would be more publicized.

Flying Penguins:
Fly penguins are good for avoiding predators from ground or water. Flying penguins I don't think are that important because what does flying penguins do to help things better in the environment. This video wasnt really reliable because penguins are just the same they could just fly. By S.B

Yes it is an example for an adaption by making them fly, If penguins could fly it would be much more easier for them to catch and get there prey. Although, another way it is useful ad they would need to get used to is to fly in the wind that is hard to do. One More reason why it would be good if they could fly is because they could fly away from there prey and get away much faster. I don't think that this video is reliable because in the video that was 24 minutes that we watched last class is showed flying penguins and it said that it was pretty cool but they don't fly.

Yes I think it's a adaptation but is very much so impossible because the they have no feathers making it impossible to fly also they produce oil from a gland under their tail and rub it all over themselves so it would be hard to fly with ooil on them. If they actually fly it says they fly to tropical places in the really cold winter. the link is reliable because its bbd and they do documentaries on nature a lot.

I think that penguins used to fly but not any more. If they were to fly it would be an adaptation because they adapted to being able to fly. Plus the video was taken a while ago and there's no way that penguins who live in the cold weather would go somewhere tropical and hot. Plus penguins would have no food in South America. Although flying would help them get away from predators and move around faster.

I think this would be a very helpful adaption for penguins. They can fly away from predators and catch prey faster. This video is not very reliable because it is old so, if it was real we would have heard about is sooner. Also, it look really edited and not very real. I do not think this would pass the C.R.A.A.P test because it old and know other research about it.

Yes it is an adaptation. I guess these penguins couldn't stay warm in winter so they adapted so they can fly south. If they could stay warm and swim like the others they could stay but they cant. It probably would pass the test. It is made by bbc and posted 2008 so it isn't that old but the fact that we learned this last year and by reading the description there is a video link also by them made to explain how it was an april fools prank.

I think this information is correct for penguins adaptions, this is correct they can fly where ever whenever as long as its in a cold place. They can fly from there prey that are trying to get them as long as the prey also cant fly. This video does not seem real it seems edited and I just don't think its real. So this does not fall under the category of the c.r.a.a.p test.

Yes it is an example,and this adaptation would help them by in the winter they would fly to warmer places.I do not think this is reliable first of all this was posted close to if not 7 years ago secondly the link kinda tells you something important.Also the penguins flying look photoshopped.The link does work,
