WEDNESDAY: Speech Fest - Round 1 Completed

High Jump

Today, we concluded round 1 of Speech Fest within Division 4. Tomorrow, the Grade 6 finalists will compete to see who will be the Grade 6 student who moves on to the finals. The grade 7 finalists will compete on Friday. I have to congratulate all of the division 4 students for working so hard on their essays/speeches at school and at home. Many hours were spent writing their speeches according to the conventional 5 paragraph essay structure and many hours were spent rehearsing in front of other classmates and family members. It just goes to show you how practice truly help you improve!

I think the big idea is... To include everyone even if they are not your favourite person and to ALWAYS treat everyone with respect. I think This because when the invisible boy got included and the other boy was treating him with respect he was not so invisible and it even in the book he became in colour. The lesson I learned reminding me of a saying, "Treat everyone the way you want to be treated." Because people were not treating the invisible boy like this. Well, I have been left out of many things. For example, if I wanted to play a game of man tracker with people they say "No." to me in a very rude way. Many things like this has happened to me and it does not make me feel good so you should not do that to other people. To conclude, this is my opinion on the book. What is yours?

@Mr. Hong, thank you for putting my high jump video on the website! I know now what I can do better next time, and how I see myself jump! I just realized that I need to run faster as I am going closer to the stick, I need to make sure that my right leg goes to my left shoulder when im about to jump, and also to remember to arch my back more so that my butt wont get in the way! I think that big idea of the story was to always include everybody. Even if you are the only person including someone everybody else will notice and include that person too. The other kids in the book weren't being very respectful because 1, they didn't include Brian in anything 2, they at the new kids food 3, they judged a book by its cover because when the new kid came they were deciding if the new kid was cool enough to be friends with them before they even met him. Emilio learned that he never included Brian so he started to be nice to him. I learned that I should always be nice to everybody and respectful because everybody is different. In grade 4 I didn't have any friends but then I started being more social and friendly to people and then I had tons of friends.

The big idea is to be nice and notice people that people don't notice much. In the book no one noticed Brian and they left him out and the were being rude about the new kids food. Emilio started to be nice to Brian because the new kid was being nice too. I learned not to pick the best players and then I should choose randomly.

I think the big idea is don't disclude people include them. My opinion is you shouldn't disclose people because there not cool or popular as you. From the book they play a game at recess everybody gets on a team but Bryan because nobody notices him and there's fair teams. I think Bryan learned friends are easy to make you just need to give some love. I think this because in the book Bryan gives a note to Justin and the next dayJustin and Bryan are friends. I learned that if a kid is lonely and by himself you should ask him to play with you. One connection I have with this is when I was in grade 4 and I had these 5 friends and we used to play tag or man tracker and they always made me be it by just running away from me I used to chase and I told that was not nice and if you keep doing that I'm not going to play with you but the still did it so I just went away and did something else.

0 is a integer, because I think that integers are made up of 3 parts, the positive, negative and the 0. The 0 is like the base of integers, and is like the invisible number that doesn't do anything much, but it sets the guidelines between the negatives and positives. 0 is the only real number that is neither negative or positive, so I think even though 0 is neither a negative or positive, it still represents that nothing is present when used as a counting number. It's a tricky question, but I still believe that 0 is a integer.

I think the big idea to invisible boy is to be sure to notice everyone no matter how much others look for attention.

My opinion is people wait too much for people to befriend them and you should get out there and make some friends, I think this because I have been to many different schools and people don't often befriend me I just go out and chat people up, a good example from the story is when the new kid came lots of kids showed interest for a while but never really did anything friend like and the same example works for the "invisible boy."

I learned from the story that you can always make more friends and a large group of acquaintances can be as good or better than a few close friends.

My connection as I said before is a have been through many schools (not because I am a troublemaker or anything like that) and people don't rush to be your friend very often and introducing yourself is a good start to any friendship.

Zero is considered an integer but my personal opinion has not wavered, I will always see zero as a baseline rather than an integer but many people define zero as an integer such as the many sources used to find answers in Google question answers.

Just imagine being the only one that everyone ignores you, or thinks you are weird? Would you feel sad? Or would you just think there not being nice to you? Firstly, I think the big idea is to be kind to others, espicially if they dont have much friends, or if they are new to the school or a class. In a matter of fact, I think the big idea is to be kind because, in the book the boy Bryan was left alone while others were playing a game at school. With this in mind, Bryan probably felt sad and left out because, when the class were picking teams for a game, nobody picked him. I also noticed, that in the beggining of the book Bryan was just a simple pencil sketch, while others were in colour. Hows that? Well, my opinion is because, he probably didnt talk or played with anyone since nobody will talk or play with him back. And probably, Bryan felt that nobody noticed him, and he was the only one left alone. Specifically, I think that Justin, learned to be kind to others since, the other people are kind to him because, they didn't want to include Bryan. Thirdly, I now know that if I do see someone not letting a current person play soccer, I will go up to that person and say that they can play, and of course telling that person on what he did was not kind nor nice. Lastly, this reminds me of whenever I come to class late after recess or lunch and we start a project of some sort and everyone already went into groups and im the only one, some people just say they already have a group when I ask them nicely if I can join. However, some people always include me into their groups, and by that I know that they are being kind. Above all, I think the big idea is to be always kind to others. What do you think? And ask yourselves did someone ever make you feel left out, or if they were mean just because, you forgot or cant do anything?

I think the big idea is to include everyone in everything. To prove my point, in this book no one included Brian that is why he was the "invisible boy". After Justin came he started including Brian and then Emilio started including him. So that proves my point regarding the big idea.

I think one of the characters that learned something was Emilio. He learned this from Justin; include everyone. He learned this from Justin when Justin was including him. I think Justin learned to include everyone from his old school.

I learned never to choose players depending on their age, knowledge, experience, ability, gender, etc.

I can relate to Brian because sometimes at lunch time I have no one to play with and nothing to do so I just wait till the bell rings. This is similar to Brian's story.

To conclude, that is what I thing about the story, "The Invisible Boy." What are your thoughts/opinions? What are you going to do to make sure everyone is included?

I think 0 is a integer because it's still a WHOLE number also it's not a decimal or fraction. Also, on a number line you don't start on one you start on zero because zero is the first number. To state my point, 0 + any number equals that number so it is still a WHOLE number. Emilio learned to include every one. Emilio learned this from Justin when he invited him in his group so then Emilio started including him.

Not to pick people on what they look like there gender or there skills.

Sometimes when there is no one to play with I just play by my self.

I think that zero is an integer because if you are counting, you cannot count from negative numbers to positive numbers without using zero. That means that zero is a whole counting number and it is not a decimal nor fraction.

I think that the big idea is to make sure everyone is included because Brian isn't included in any of the activities that the kids did at school. They left him out and he was always picked last or ignored.

In my opinion, I feel like it's really important that we make sure everyone is included in things because it's better to feel like you're needed instead of not wanted. When Brian saw the new kid and how he was being picked on, he started to talk to him and cheering him up because that's just a nice thing to do. But when the new kid, "Justin" started talking to him, he started to lose his shadows and began to fill with colour. So I think that we should all include each other.

I think that Emilio learned that he should have made friends with Brian instead of leaving him out of activities. When Justin suggested that they should include Brian into their project, he noticed that Brian was actually fun to play with.

I learned that we should all make sure everyone is included because then they would feel bad and lonely. Which is one of the worst things you can do to a child, in my opinion.

When I was at my old school, I had only one friend and no one really noticed me because I was really anti-social, my friend was always nice to me though and she would not ignore me but when she wasn't here on school days, I felt really lonely and didn't know what to do so I just sat in the office by myself. Now I got over that and I have a bunch of friends as I arrived to this school (in grade 4).

Everyone should be treated the same and you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

In my opinion, I think you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover because you can't judge someone if you haven't even met them.

I think the new kids friend learned that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

Everyone should be treated with equal respect and if you see something say something.

When I was younger I was really weird and just because I was different then most kids people treated differently. For example, people wouldn't include me in a lot of stuff.

Imagine if you were treated as if you were invisible and not even around? This is how Brian (the invisible boy) feels. He doesn't have any friends until he meets a boy named Justin. He befriends Justin by connecting with him through struggles that they both had. When he starts to get to know Justin, he starts to get more colour inside of him. This reminded me of the book about filling other peoples buckets. In the end, Justin is in complete colour, he has friends, and doesn't feel invisible anymore. To conclude, I think that the big idea is to treat everyone with respect and include everybody.

I think the big idea of the invisible boy is to always include others. In this book the kids didn't include the invisible boy in any activities, made fun of Justin's culture, and judge the new kid by his appearances. To add on, Brian was invisible when people didn't include him but after when the kids include him he was not invisible anymore. I learned to respect other and if someone is not included in any activities, include them. When I moved to Canada I was worried about bringing Korean food to the school because I heard that kids might bully you if the food smells bad.

I think that the big idea is don't judge a book by its cover. I think this because most people in his school ignore him or don't like him because of the way he looks and they don't focus on his personality. For example, when he was having a tour of the school no one looked at his face and didn't interact with him that much, I think that they did that because they were scared of him. I learned that you should never leave someone out or misjudge them because they could be a really awesome person but you would never find out. A connection I have with the story and I think everyone can connect with this is feeling misjudged by your looks or what you wear.

My opinion is not to judge a book from its cover. Get to know the person, be the first one to introduce yourself don't wait and watch others to see how they treat someone before you make a move.
Eg: When Justin was the new kid in class and everyone was checking him out. Bryan was observing all of this.

The character that learned something was Emilio. After Justin came Emilio included Bryan in things.

The lesson I learned from the story is to treat everyone equally no matter what.

For example, how would you feel like if you had to pick a partner for an activitie and you were all by yourself? Well, that is how he felt at first, then somebody finally included him. In my opinion, I think that the teacher picking partners is better because, there is always somebody left out, and sometimes when your with your friends you get into fights and it doesn't end up good. I think this because when the main character did not have a partner he was just ignored, alone, how would you feel?

The characters in the book like the classmates, they learned that just judging people at first is the worst way to go. Why do I say this you ask? Well, because they did not even know his personality so why do they not like him. Have they even met him before, talk to him? Like when they the new kid brought his lunch out, why was everybody laughing at him, because the name sounded funny? Well I learned a valuable lesson not just because I was listening, but because I can really connect with this story and I'm sure a lot of other people do too. The lesson I learned is that you should always include everyone, whether it's supposed to be a 2 person job or not. What if you invited that person that's alone in the corner that looks or feels "Invisible."

I think the big idea is the boy wasn't like the others. He was lonely because he didn't fit in with anyone. But the boy had a passion that kept him happy. It was drawing. He had no one to look at his drawing until a new student came. The boy sent him a nice letter and the new student got his attention. So they started to become friends and the new student was more popular and the boy wasn't. The new student asked the boy to join them so he did. He started to become happy and he got to use his drawing skills with other people. When it was lunch the boy was still alone but the nice new student asked him to join him again. so the boy wasn't invisible after all he had friends and he wasn't lonely. It was because of the new student.

My connection to this was when I started skateboarding I was by my self skateboarding but I wasn't sad. A kid one year younger then me moved in my complex. It turns out he knew how to skateboard as well. So we became friends and skated together. Together we made more friends that skate and it turned into a skate crew. We all started to hang out and I wasn't lonely anymore.

My opinion of this book was that boy should of just told the people if he could join them. Maybe he could acted more happier and more like them. Maybe that way he would fit in with them. But maybe he was just shy and he was afraid he would embarrass him self. I also realized that no one helped the boy.

I think 0 is an integer. I think it is a whole number because 0, +1, +2, +3, ... And so on are. However 0 is not a counting number because you cannot count zero. Counting numbers start at 1. But it is a whole number and it is not a fraction and it does not have a decimal point anywhere in it. So 0 is still an integer.

My big idea for the story was that we shouldn't be so judgemental or shouldn't judge anyone by the facial looks. (Don't judge a book by it's cover.) And to greet others that don't have much experience to any of his/her surroundings. During the book Bryan was just silent and did nothing but draw, everyone wouldn't go near him because he didn't sound at all fun but all boring. But when another kid came in named Justin, he felt bad for Bryan because he didn't have any friends, and so he felt like he should be friends with Bryan so he could be part of something. Then as the story continues Bryan starts to have more friends and feels more happy about it. And because of that, Justin didn't judge Bryan by his cover, he just wanted to read the book, but at everyone else's perspective everybody judged Bryan's cover until that day. What I think the character has learned was to just show himself or introduce himself in front of everybody so they get to know you better and you get to easily make new friends, that's what I would do. What I learned was to try and not leave out others (eg. Sean) out of the crowd so they won't be so lonely without any friends. This reminded me of the younger self, back where I was born (England), I was a brand new kid to the school like everybody else, but I was always left out for everything. The next few days a girl came by and asked if I wanted to play. Why? It was because she noticed I was left out and she felt bad for me how I was all alone doing nothing, and that was when I met my very first friend. This post was a bit rushed since I arrived home late from picking up my Uncle from the airport.

I do think zero is an integer and zero is not an integer, here is what I think. Zero is an integer because it is nothing but itself all the time, it's never a decimal or fraction but sometimes a percent. That and zero is what connects the positives and negatives in a number line together. For example, <===-3===-2===-1===0===+1===+2===+3===>

Why I think zero is not an integer is because zero isn't a positive nor negative, and since it's neither that would mean that it shouldn't be a integer because it has to be a positive or negative of some sort, like -0, or +0, but it only shows as a plain simple 0.

Yes, I think 0 is an integer because it is the home of all numbers and without it the negative and positive sides of a number line wouldn't connect. Also it is a whole number, it isn't a decimal or a fraction so that means its a number with no value. For my last piece of info, everywhere I have looked it says its an integer includes decimals just like this:

(0) the counting number,
(1,2,3) and their opposites,
(-1,-2,-3)

I think 0 is an integer because I think that integers are made up of positive, negative and the 0 because the zero is like the base line of the integer. It always stays itself and is not a decimal or fraction.

I think that it is neither because it does not have an oposite number nor can it be a positive or nagetive but, I don't think it is not an integer (If that makes any sense). I think this because it clearly states in multiple websites and the textbook that for a number to not be an integer that it has to be a decimal or a fraction and 0 is non of those.

I think the big idea is you should include everyone and make everyone feel welcome. For example, people never really interacted with Brian and always excluded him which of coarse made him sad and if someone did that to me Of coarse I would be sad to. One connection I have is in grade 1 I used to exclude people all the time, sometimes I didn't know I was doing this but to be honest in some cases I did. Sometimes I was playing tag with my friends and someone asked to join and I said "no" and me and my friends walked away and played somewhere else. Of coarse now I know that that was wrong and I would never do that again.

I think the big idea is all about kindness and don't be afraid to be who you are. when the boy was different he was invisible and then the other boy came along and he was popular because he did what everyone else did but when he had his different lunch he was picked on but then he found the other boy and they became friends

0 is not a interger but it is also is. 0 is neutral, it is a whole number but it means nothing, it represents nothing but a symbol.

0 is an integer because it counts for what the amount of the object of the problem is if theres nothing there.

I think the big idea the the story was to respect others and treat them nicely.
