Wednesday: The Enbridge Pipeline Debate

Thinking critically about different topics is very important and we need to know both sides of any story (unbiased perspective) in order to make an informed opinion. There are many pros and cons to the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project Proposal. Today, you read a news article about it and watched a video clip. Scroll down low and watch the video clip that has been posted and complete the 'WRITE A RESPONSE' for tonight.

1.) MATH 6 - Complete all assigned questions Ch.9 L4 (Text)
MATH 7 - Any assigned work.
2.) SOCIAL STUDIES 6/7 - No homework.
3.) WRITE A RESPONSE: After reading and watching a video about the Enbridge Northern Pipeline Project Proposal, you learned there are pros and cons to the project. Think critically about the topic and complete the following:
a.) Watch this video link and state whether or not you believe it is a biased or unbiased view of the Enbridge Pipeline Project. Ask yourself - Who made the video? What is the message it is promoting? Does it give both sides of the story? How can I find this information?
b.) Pick a side of the debate and state your opinion clearly explaining why you support or don't support the project based on what you learned today and what you see in this video.
c.) Provide at 2-3 supporting sentences (examples, statistics, quotes, etc) to support your opinion.

After seeing the Enbridge Pipeline Video, I learned that we should not build a pipeline. I think that we shouldn't build the pipeline because people play in it, like in the video surfing in it, if there was an oil spill accident, we could die or get harmed. The new pipeline might earn Canada some big money, but we already have so much pipelines. They could pop and the environment could get dirty and polluted. For an example, if someone is playing in the snow, an earthquake happens, and the new pipeline just happens to below the person, the pipeline pops open and gets oil on him, he suffers pain. Why would anyone want that? The Gulf of Mexico recently had a spill, a lot of people got harmed and killed. In conclusion, we should not create a new pipeline and Canada should stay the same.

-Could you include the video link from the one we had watched in class? Also, I think you were talking about the the video we watched in class, not the new video link. So, you could add a little more detail from that.
-Answer the questions from part "A" with some detail.

It saying that we need more oil to meet our need, cars, buses, and trains. The video's creator username is "Enbridgepipelines", they're trying to promote and get people to build more pipelines. We can find this information anywhere online. A video that has the cons and the pros would be better. Finally, this video or clip is saying that we should build the new pipeline and they don't really care about the enviroment.

The Gulf of Mexico recently had a oil spill, a lot of people got harmed and killed. We wouldn't want Canada to suffer that too. Many things run on oil and rely on oil, but I hope in the future we will find another source for fuel. Maybe we should use Electric Cars? Who knows?

In conclusion, we should not create a new pipeline and stay the same.

Second! and @anyone in grade 7 whats the math homework?

In my opinion I think that we shouldn't build a pipeline because people will get hurt and then theres alot of pollution. Firstly people would get hurt by playing in it like by surfing because if there was a accident then alot of people would get hurt. Even if they were swimming in the lake. Canada is earning a lot of money by doing this becuase its easier. But if we think about it then we would have a lot of pollution. Like in Mexico when they had that big oil spill it could happen again and more people would suffer from it. So I dont think that we should have a pipeline in Canada.

In my opinion I think that we shouldn't build another pipeline because then there would be a lot of pollution. Example, In mexico they had a huge oil spill that hurt a lot of people. If that happens again then a lot of people would get and suffer. Like if someone was surfing and then that happened then that would hurt that person and the people who are swimming. Yes we all know that Canada will get big money for this new pipeline but... Think about the other people. I also, think that it is biased because its only talking about the good possibilities and not the bad possibilities.

I think the Endbridge pipeline video is unbiased beacuse its not only one persons opinion. Its Endbridge's opinion, and whoever agrees that the big pipeline is a goood idea.
I think they should not build the pipeline because it could cause a massive oil spill, because there is an earthquake that is soposed to happen out here because we havnet had an earthquake in about 10 years total. and if theres an earthquake, with the pipeline the pipeline will burst and cause a massive oil spill. causeing all of the water in the ocean and what lives in it to die.

After watching the video, I learned that a pipeline is not a good idea. I think that we should not build the pipe line because people surf there and if there was an oil spill that would not be happening, and also the animals would be harmed because they would have no water to drink, and the fish would die instantly and would not be edible because they would be covered in oil. The only good part about the pipeline is it would earn Canada some cash but, is it really worth risking mother nature for money? For example if a large earthquake happens where there is alot of pipelines and alot of people they will all be harmed more than the earthquake on it's own. We all heard about the spill recently on the Gulf of Mexico, alot of people were killed and if not harmed badly. I think the video is unbiased because it really only is giving you information on pipelines, so maybe a little mor biased than unbiased because it only talks about pipelines but it does not 100% give an opinion.

In my opinion i think that that pipe line should not be placed there becuase firstly if your remeber that around two years ago there was an oil spill and it cost a lot of money to clean up and it is still not cleaned all up and i think that it is pointless to do that agin secondly if it did spill all te wild life would be killed or harmed and i don't think that anyone would want that to happen again. Also for the past years people have been saying that there is going or aspose to be an big earthquake from around 7-9 and if so whatever hapens to the pipeline would harm people and the earth somehow.

Once I seen the video I believe that the video biased toward the oil compony because they do not state the cons about the oil pipe being built but the video was made by the compony and the compony in this video they are being biased because all they want is the money that will be created by building this pipe line I can easly find the information by shearching up the componys website but that information will probably be biased as well.
In my opinion, I think building the pipe is good and bad it is good because brings in a lot of money that means better briges better transport lower taxes on people because it will bring in a lot of money to the economy of canada also, the video states I think only the pros about the pipe being built because it only talks about the benefit about the oil. Lastly, it will create 1150 long term 3,000 short term jobs. It is bad because it can cause an oil spill but it is not that likely. According to the news if an oil spill occurs some were in the pipe line and they do not know where it is they will not pay for the damage believe it or not tht is what the compony said on the news.

@ Cole - I like that you mentioned some of the postive things that the pipeline could potentially bring to our province. It would definitely bring more wealth to our province and it is our hope that the government would use this income wisely. For example, you mentioned new bridges, roads, etc.

I wonder if the new pipeline would mean that we wouldn't have to pay a toll on the Port Mann Bridge? Hmmmmm. I wonder..........

I have seen it on the news the company said "we will not be responsible for any damage if the pipe line breaks some where". that is not how they said it they probably said it differently.

I oppose to the Northern Gateway project. First, I am a person who worries a lot. I think I would be very worried for all of those animals at risk, and us humans at risk! Afterall, they did mention that this project is not “Fail proof.” Also, because of where we live, there has been many warnings/warning signs for British Columbia to be in risk of an Earthquake. And, it is no ordinary Earthquake they are predicting, it is a major magnitude warning. Maybe around 7-9 magnitudes. What if something happens to the pipes? Of course it is said that they will be strong and basically unbreakable, but I honestly do not believe that it will be entirely safe in a situation like this. If we do in fact get this built, and we get a high magnitude Earthquake, I do believe that the pipe and us, will be harmed in some sort of way. Whether it is because the pipe breaks/cracks, or a huge oil spill occurs and everyone including us will have to suffer.

In my opinion that video was biased partially because, the video was made by the Enbridge pipeline company. the video only showed the pros, and not the cons of the making of the pipeline. You can find this info by searching up Enbridge company. In my opinion I am against the idea because if they make the pipeline then theres a risk of our health safety and the water creatures safety because it could spill in the water, also there will be large amounts of green house gasses.

A) The video, I thought was biased because it didn't show any of the cons. Only the pros. It was made by enbridge pipelines itself. Which means they aren't going to tell us all of the problems because they are only trying to promote the pipeline.
B) I think I am against the pipeline . Because after seeing the surfing video and all of the trees and streams and animals and all of that could be gone if there was an oil spill and it could never be the same. So even though it will bring in millions of dollars it could not replace all of the wildlife that was put in centuries ago.

What an interesting conversation you have going on! I would have to agree with the posters here about the nature of the video. It is biased. I believe there are other videos out there that show the other side of the story too.

I think the video was biased, it didn't show anything that could go wrong for example, the pipes could leak or break. Oil is very useful but someday, we will find a better fuel source. In my opinion, we should be doing this because we cant rely on other things for constant or at least long lasting energy like solar energy, they are environmentally good but they don't work so well in the night. Generators are a start but really, we still are using oil to generate power most of the time and when we don't, we don't produce as much.

I think that an environmentally friendly power source could be some sort of mill that reacts to rain when raining or maybe using the gravity from the moon itself kind of like using ocean waves.

b.) After still watching that video, in my opinion, the pipeline is a bad choice. Why? Well there are a lot more cons than pros. Firstly, if the pipeline spills, it will cost BILLIONS of dollars in repair. Not to mention the ocean will become contaminated. Making our food resources from the ocean, not consumable since they have been drenched with oil. That could make some fish like the salmon extinct. Also, since we live in a earthquake hot zone, the pipe could explode from an earthquake. Lastly, it will be very bad for the environment since it will release more green house gasses.

I think that the pipeline is a good idea and at the sometime a bad idea. think it's good because it will bring lots of job opportunities about 1,150 long term jobs and about 3,000 and it will bring about 207 billion which is a lot of money that means better resources for schools, maybe better healthcare and a better economy for Canada.

The bad things about this project is there are a lot of risks from the workers to the pipe it's self. BC is located on the ring of fire which surrounds the pacific ocean and is known for being the cause for a lot of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and due to the length of the pipe if a problem happens it will be hard to reach the problem and also if an oil spill occurs it could really take a toll on the environment.

This is biased, because there must be some sort of video out there that says that there are almost 2,000.000 things to fill the U.S.A cars so there must be others out there. This is made by: EnbridgePipelines also the message is promoting how much oil we use. Yes it tells most about both sides. you can find the information on Google, and my side is not with the oil because after the oil spill in the gulf of mexico there was one and it still is there. I think that there is still 55% of oil still in the ocean but the other 45% is getting better.

The video seems to be one sided; it did not cover any of the impacts on the environment that the extraction and transportation of the oil has on the environment.
No mention was made to the risks of oil spills to plant and animal life.
The video encourages us to stay dependent on easy to get oil as opposed to encouraging the audience to think of alternatives.

I think this is more biased than un biased because they kept talking about how good the oil and pipelines are but they never said any thing about the dangers of oil spills. If an oil spill happened, we would be in a dangerous situation and so would some animals, since some animals can eat fish some times and the fish would probably die from all the dirty water, so the animals that eat the fish will have nothing to eat. Therefore they will die. Pipe lines might make us money, but it is taking a risk because there could be an oil spill any time. :D

I don't want the pipelines, I will explain why in this paragraph.

I think this video is biased because, the Enbridge people kept talking about the "Good" side of the story. They were saying how good the oil and pipelines are but not the dangers of oil spills. If an oil spill happened, we would be in a dangerous situation and so would some animals, since some animals can eat fish some times and the fish would probably die from all the dirty water, so the animals that eat the fish will have nothing to eat. I think that the video is biased because the video only said the good things about the pipeline.i think that we also need that pipeline because we need the pipeline in many different ways like for transportation, medicine, plastic and things that we count on every day the bad things about the pipeline is that it can create maybe another oil spill that can go in oceans or rivers or lakes which can really harm the wild animals. I think that I'm going to go on the pros side of the debate.

B) i support both. i support it not going up because if it breaks or spills the animal habitat will have a lot of problems.i support it going up because it could erase Canada's debt and make more jobs and get money coming in.
C) if we don't we are in debt and we don't get more jobs for canadians and not as much money is coming in. if we do there is a risk that there could be a spill

i want but don't want the pipelines because if we get them it may contaminate the water if it spills but it would make more money for canada

In my opinion I think that the video is 100% biased. The reason why I think it is biased, is because the video only pointed out the positive things about oil, and how it's transported. They had never explained the pro and con, it was just only the pros. Another reason why they were biased was because, they also never stated their opinion on what they think about what the world is doing with the oil. I personally don't support with the idea of the project. There are various reason why though. The main one is the risk. To what I understand, B.C hasn't done anything like this so there could be a natural disaster that may occur. Also, it may ruin our province.

The video made enbridge pipelines was unbiased. the message they are trying to promote is that we should vote to have it made or or not made. I think it's biased, seeing as most of the video they were showing off all of the things that oil can do for us, while they didn't talk about the dangers if the ships tipped, oil lines collapsed and the trains and trucks fell over and spilled, then that would cause major problems with needs, wildlife and the land over al, seeing as it takes sometimes decades for these things to be cleaned up.
I think that we shouldn't make the pipeline, but if it is made, then I want the oil to be refined in Canada, because that would create more jobs and help the economy, because if we ship it over seas, then others are out of work here in our own country. It could also end up with a major oil spill if there was a earthquake, seeing as were in a earthquake zone here in Canada, and the soil will absorb the oil, making plant growth very difficult.

COUNTERPOINT: First off I don't think that WE should have another pipeline flowing through canada, the resin why i think this is because that 1.) what about natural disasters have we completely forgot about what that kind of firepower can do to our pipelines? If something like that where to dig into our pipelines just THINK that could happen to the environment around us. with the other pipeline of the enbridge installed there is a increase of pollution around canada due to OIL spills caused by the pipelines. think about it, do we really want that to happen to our COUNTRY? we could get killed if that kind of damage entered our fresh water that we drink and swim in very single day.

POINT: ON the other hand the pipeline could help a little by shipping oil to places far and wide such as the far east nations for a example another reason that the enbridge pipeline is a good idea is because if its really far in length then it can deliver oil to people who couldn't receive oil that fast. the a normal pipeline can carry and levier about 525,000 berels of bitumen every day from the oil sands to the B.C coast and would normally be about 1,777 kilometres in length and the other would deliver a somewhat amount of 193,000 berels of toxic natural gas mixes in the opposite direction, equaling to bitumen deleting thus making the bitumen flow faster.

Another reason why a pipeline could help is helping to sell oil to the far east nations like china thats good saying the project's soupourts until now. Resources now have flown to canada or the u.s.

Enbridge Pipelines they made this video. It is saying that we should filed these things and that they are good ideas.
