Wednesday: Clues and Predictions

Making predictions is a very important reading strategy. Predicting requires using information from a novel and drawing on personal experiences to predict what one is going to read about. Some things students might use to make predictions includes the title of a novel, the author, backgrounds, pictures, images, diagrams, etc. Making predictions often helps students make connections between prior knowledge and what they are going to read.

1.) FIELD TRIP: You must be in class by 8:10am at the latest. We will leave the school promptly at 8:15am. Be sure to wear winter boots, snow pants, a winter jacket,
gloves, etc.

2.) MATH 6: Scale diagrams are due on Friday.
MATH 7: Any assigned work.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Without opening a page in a book, what are some clues that can tell what a novel is going to be about? List and briefly explain 3 clues.

You can look at the cover of the book, the back of the book where it states the intro and you can learn from the title. On the cover, you can see the picture, on the back there is a paragraph about the book and the title can sometimes give you hint like "Charley and the Chocolate Factory.

One way is to look at the back or the front of the book and read the info. Also you could look at the picture and see the expression on the people's faces to figure out the attitude of the book. Last you can read the title a few times in case it gives you a hint

You can look at the title. Usually the title is just a one word summary of what the book is going to be about. Another way is that normally there is a picture on the front cover of the book that shows you an event that happens in the book or something. Finally you can look at the colours of the book. It may seem like you couldn't learn anything from the colours on the book, but when you think about it, a fairy book would have pink and blue and green. A adventurous book would probably have colours like red, black, brown and other dark colours.

1.) you can look at the cover of the novel, that will help because you can sort of tell what it's about for example the Iqbal book the frame was a carpet/rug so we know it will take place in a carpet/rug place.
2.) You can also look at the title which will tell you some stuff about the book, for example the cover of Iqbal tells us that the novel will be about a boy named Iqbal.
3.) Lastly you can see the back of the book which tells you what is going to happen in the book, for example a book that I am reading is "Stone Heart" (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!) since it is about a boy who is seeing statues move? So the back of the book probably states something about that.

Well one way the book can give you a hint is if you read the summary at the back of the book. You could look at the picture a few times and see the expression in it. You could look to see if it says somewhere a true story because it is mostly a sad story.

Firstly, you can look at the cover and see what kind of design it has on it that might give you some clues. I think this because of the book Iqbal. On the cover of Iqbal it has a pattern on it that means something. Secondly, you can look at the picture on the front cover you might be able to predict what it is going to be about because of the style of the picture. Lastly, you could read the title of the book it means a lot about the book because it is a title.

There are certain clues that can tell you what the book is about like the image if its a picture of a sad small kids you can guess that the book will be sad but if its of a kid playing you could guess that its a happy book. You can also tell about a book by the title if its a title like the lost one its probably a sad book and if its the found one then its most likely a happy book.

3 thing you can see in a book are...

The cover, which tells you what the title. And a image, of what the might the characters look like. And on the back you can tell a brief summarize of what the story is about and what is going to happen.

One way to find information is by looking at the back of the book it will have about a paragraph or more about what the characters names are and what the book is about.

Some clues to tell what is the book is going to be about are: Firstly, you can look at the front cover which might give you some of an idea (because they wouldn't put a cover on the book that's not related) secondly, you could look at the design of the book which might also help you tell. Thirdly one way which will give a lot more away it to read the back cover of the book because it usually give a summary of what the book is going to be about.:)

To figure out what the book is going to be about without reading any of the pages you could look at the front page because it would tell you the title and have a picture that is related to the story, additionally you could look at the sipummary on the back page, last but not least you could look at the detail put into the front and back cover is there a certain design they use? Does the book have a certain colours?

You can predict what a book will be about by first of all, reading the title. When you read the title most of the time it gives away some information about the book. Next, you can look at the image on the cover. The picture usually shows the main event of the book or the characters. Finally, you an read the back of the book. Reading the back of the book is the easiest way of finding out what the book will be about. By reding the back of the boo, it will make you more interested about the topic and what the book is about (then you will want to read it).

You can see that the child is around 11-44 and he seems like he is making rugs by the frame of the picture. Also, you can read the back and it gives a summary of the book.

1.) I think that he is going to sow some thing because, he is runing his fingers though the thread.
2.) I think that he is in child labor or poverty because, he looked sad and had taterd and dirty cloths on him.
3.) I think that he is making rugs or carpets in a factory because, it the back round of the picture there is a rug or carpet.

You can look at if any of the charaters are in danger if so see what kind of danger. You could also can look at the area where does it look like the book is taking place. You look at th title and see if it means anything powerfull. Lastly you can be logic remember what you are learning about in class and maybe that is the book you will be reading.

You can look at the cover and write some stuff down. Also, you can look at what the Title is.Or you could even read the back of the book and get an idea.

To start off, you can tell the book Iqbal, is going to be about a boy named Iqbal. You can tell because on the top of the book is says " Based on the life of Iqbal Masth. " Secondly, you can tell the book is going to be about child labour. You can tell because the picture on the cover looks like a sad boy in a factory. Also, we are learning about child labour so what else would we read about? Lastly, you can tell the book is going to be about carpets/rugs. I know this because the border of the picture of Iqbal is a rug.

You can make a loose prediction on a novel by looking at the cover, reading the back of the book, and thinking about the title. When you see a cover of a book, the cover must be a symbol or something relevant to the books so you know that things on the cover will probably be in the book somewhere. The back of the book has some details, normally clips of the novel but they give idea. The title is most pf the time a really big clue, some cases are that they are completely mischief and don't reveal anything, but when they are meaning something, the meaning is within the book.

The main strategy I use to predict what will the book be about is a title. Most of the time, that will help a lot. For example, Iqbal. You know who the book be about, however you wont know the story. Next, I usually like to read the books summary on the back of the novel. It sums up what the story will be about, and usually you see whether it will be a book you would like. I also look at the cover of the book if there are pictures, subtext, etc.
Those are a few reading strategies I use to predict what the book will be about.
